Nigerian man returns from Libya to discover his wife has married his friend and his only son is dead

A heartbreaking video showcasing a young Nigerian’s truly harrowing life experiences has been uploaded to YouTube.

In the clip, a Nigerian named Harrison solemnly narrates how he barely escaped death after an ill-fated attempt to illegally travel to Italy from Libya. Out of 142 on board his makeshift boat, only three survived.

The Nigerian was taken to a Libyan prison where he languished for almost five years. After ‘miraculously’ securing release, his return to Nigeria was to prove an even bigger shock. His wife, thinking him dead, had married one of his closest friends. His only son was dead. Here is his story:

142 people set out on the intrepid voyage that night. 142 naïve men, women and children on a journey to the unknown. 142 recklessly risking their lives in the pursuit of a ‘better future’ in Europe. But 142 never arrived. 139 descended to a watery grave that night. 139 families cruelly robbed of their loved one.

139 destinies battered by the howling winds of the Mediterranean Seas. Harrison was one of the only three survivors, clinging desperately onto an empty oil can. Unbeknown to him, the life he stubbornly clung to was a reality far worse than death…

A better life lay waiting for him, they said. A land flowing with proverbial ‘milk and honey’. An ‘easy job’ with ‘easy money’ abroad. Desperation easily fell for the tactics of deception and Harrison agreed.

The married dock-worker who had recently lost his job was lulled into the false belief that travelling abroad to Europe ‘no matter the cost’ was the best option. What began with hope ended up in a journey of perilous danger and bitter despair.

Harrison set out five years ago, bidding his wife and young son a tearful farewell and promising he would speak with them as soon as he reached ‘Italy’. He never did. A tumultuous passage through the desert finally led the young Nigerian to the North African nation of Libya.

Alongside 141 others, hustled into a small ‘rubber dinghy’, Harrison was pushed into the sea by those heading an intricate network of human trafficking. Mid-journey, the makeshift boat hit a rock and began leaking. Chaos ensued.

As water began filling up the boat amidst the screams and cries of its occupants, Harrison beheld a shocking sight that seared his conscience. A mother held her crying baby aloft as the frail boat began to sink. Before his eyes, he witnessed the ocean swallow mother and son. Gone.

Life snuffed out in one foul watery swoop. As the boat capsized, Harrison grabbed onto an empty can that once contained oil.

To his left and right, those he travelled with submerged into the abyss. With his strength failing, a ship of Libyan coast guards emerged from the shadows. Hauled aboard, his ‘rescuers’ brutally beat him to a stupor. The following morning, he painfully awoke – not in hospital – but in a dingy prison cell.

The horrors Harrison witnessed in a Libyan underground dungeon go far beyond the meager description mere words can provide. It was almost five years of ‘hell on earth’.

Life became cheap to the startling degree that Harrison witnessed dead bodies carried out of the cell on a daily basis. With hopes of a release barely minimal and scores of new inmates pouring into the dungeons daily, the young Nigerian had an unusual dream one night. He saw himself in a large church receiving prayer from a ‘man of God’.

He woke in a cold sweat. Shortly afterwards, Harrison was among the over 600 Nigerians in Libya who were deported with the intervention of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), a branch of the United Nations.

However, freedom came along with a heartbreaking reality. Returning to his home in Ejigbo, Lagos State, the first residents who saw the ‘prodigal son’ disbelievingly threw sand on him, thinking he was a ghost. Rumours had spread like wildfire that Harrison had died since his departure five years earlier.

Assuring them he was a real person, he was led solemnly to his former house. There, the shock of his life awaited. His wife had remarried – to his best friend. His only son had died. Five years wasted. Five years lost. Five years that changed everything.

Forlorn and malnourished, Harrison recalled the dream he had in the Libyan prison and headed to The Synagogue, Church Of All Nations (SCOAN). He was not alone. In May 2017, more than N15m was provided to deportees by the church’s humanitarian arm, alongside two bags of rice each.

This show of compassion touched him to the core as he realised that what he sought for abroad was actually available in his own country. Harrison called on the youth of Nigeria to never undergo such a journey and be content with what they have. After hearing his sordid experiences, T.B. Joshua gave Harrison the sum of N120,000 to help him start a new life.

Another Virgin Mary miracle of the sun happened in Lagos

Virgin Mary miracle

Nigerian Catholic Devotees of the Virgin Mary witnessed yet another Awe Inspiring Miracle Of The Sun.

The event which happened yesterday 28th Oct 2017 at the National Stadium in Lagos, saw thousands of Christian Devotees of the Virgin Mary in attendance.

Event was held to conclude the Lagos Diocesan Commemoration of The 1917 Apparition of The Virgin Mary in Fatima which rounded 100years this year.

Just like the one that happened in Benin Nigeria on 13th October , 15 days ago, the sun was seen shifting orientation, enlarging and diminishing its rays.

People could freely look at it because it could no longer hurt the eyes. IMMACULATABLOG caught a mobile phone video of this event as shown in the video link below:

In the video, one could hear the exclamation of one of the attendants who was actually seeing the Virgin Mary within the miracle. Notice the natural background noise and exclamations, coupled with the movement of a bird around the visual.

Virgin Mary miracle

One observer who called himself ‘a former doubting Thomas’ told ImmaculateBlog that the reason he believed this miracle was that when the sun changed colours, enlarged or shrank its rays, all other objects around the visual remained normal colour and size and were not enlarging or shrinking with the sun.

Virgin Mary miracle

According to him, only the sun was doing its own thing at the impulse of the Virgin Mary.

For the many times the sun’s rays enlarged and shrank with changing colours, the witnesses were left in no doubt as to whether a solar miracle had occurred.

“There’s nothing wrong with copying Olamide” — Skales

Skales in a Chat with Sunday Scoop has finally revealed that there’s absolutely nothing wrong if artistes inspired each other.

Skales and Olamide.

Reacting to speculations that his latest music video, Agolo, was a ‘photocopy’ of Olamide’s Wo, he Shake Body crooner said there was nothing bad if artistes inspired each other.

“Because artistes inspire each other, I will never go against anyone who says I copied Olamide. He has always motivated me. I recently told the story of how he paid for my music video. He also told me that I have inspired him in so many ways. But he was not the first person to shoot a street video. Before I even released the video, we had a conversation about it.

“I didn’t try to copy anyone; it was just an inspiration. Next year, I plan to do more music that is relatable to the people on the streets because, at the end of the day, they are the people we do music for,” he added.

Meanwhile, Skales also revealed during the chat that he once used to sleep in a shopping complex with his mother as their father left them when he was very young, he said.

“I was born and brought up on the streets. All I am doing right now is what I learnt on the streets. The streets made me a go-getter because I don’t want to go back to the place I used to be.

“On the streets, I learnt that you should always try your best to be somebody in life. This is the reason I am working hard because life on the streets is not an easy one. Once you’ve managed to sail through, you just want to be more successful,” Skales stated.

He maintained that being on the streets didn’t mean one has no class, nothing that the street also produced top musicians like Olamide, Lil Kesh and 9ice, among others.

Getting married before Don Jazzy not a big deal — D’Prince

Don Jazzy’s younger brother, Charles Enebeli, aka, D’Prince, tells OLUSHOLA RICKETTS of Punch about his career; how Mo’Hit’s collapse affected him; working with his brother and future plans

Why did you take a break from music?
I actually needed a quiet time to work and now, I can attest to its benefit. I know that a lot has happened in the industry. I have actually evaluated the situation and gone back to the studio to record a new album.
From back in the days at Mo’ Hit Records to Mavin Records, we don’t usually put out music at all times. But personally, I don’t think anyone records more music than me.

There is nothing you go through without a reason. I believe all the experience I have had in this industry will help me in the future. I know the future is very bright for me. The future is bigger than the music, Nigeria and all that we see presently.

With the album that I intend to put out soon, I think it will answer questions that many people have been asking me. If I show you my mails, you will see those messages that keep me going.

With the success of your debut album, are you not under pressure to deliver a better sophomore album?

This is always a big question for anyone who plans to drop a sophomore album. People will always want to compare the former and the latter. However, I prefer to leave that to the consumers once the album is in the market.

For me, this album is just about growth and realisation. I feel like I have never put in so much work as I have done in this album. I have the conviction that my music is coming from my heart now and I am in a better place. They say if your dreams don’t scare you, it is not big enough. I know I am better and I know there is a huge improvement in my music.

DPrince

Don’t you think taking a break may have possibly worked against you?
If you read books about life, scarcity also increases demand. In Nigeria too, you cannot be everywhere as an artiste because it may not be wise for people to see and know everything about you.

I am not a solo artiste, and I don’t own a record company yet. Since I am still signed on to Mavin Records and there are protocols, I must always abide by the rules and regulations. If I flout the rules, I would have left the company since. Maybe when I have my record company, I can then begin to make music as everyone expects.

What has changed about you since you became a father two years ago?

My child and the mother are in America, so I travel often to see them. Being a father has been an amazing experience for me. My mother normally says when you get to a bridge, you will cross it. I saw the bridge and it was easy for me to cross over.

Do you plan to marry secretly too, like D’banj did?

It is not about having a secret wedding; it is about living a private life. I am who I am today because of my music and talent, not because of my relationship or family. How about if my partner doesn’t want to be in the limelight? So, we need to respect the other person’s decision too. I have seen a situation where the lady got so much attention and she was not prepared for them. I don’t even fancy putting my personal life on social media.

Why have you yet to get married or are you afraid you will lose your female fans?

We all know Kevin Hart is married, yet women still chase him. Diamond Platnumz from Tanzania is married but still impregnated another lady. So, it is not about marriage. The fans love you for your music and they don’t care about your marital status.

Do you think you are a better singer now?

I released my last album, Frenzy, three years ago when we just started Mavin Records. And I think I am a better human being now. I appreciate this moment of my life, but people still make references to those songs I did then.
According to Jay Z, if you love my old works, go buy them in the store. So, if people still love my old materials, they still have them in the store.

I am a better human being now and obviously, my music should be better. I am in a place where I feel that a lot of people will be touched and affected positively by my music, which is very important to me.

Are you working on anything?

I have different projects that I cannot disclose now, but in the near future, I will be unveiling some platforms. Some of these platforms already exist, but we are bringing them back to the forefront so that everyone can benefit from them.

I am born to the world for music and I have always believed that your handwork should speak for you. As a journalist, if you are not doing your work well, it will tell. I want my work to speak for me, rather than speaking about it. That is how we were raised in my family. That’s how my brother, Don Jazzy, is. We are not boastful; we just focus on our work.

Last night, I was in the studio with Tiwa Savage all through. She will be here very soon again and we plan to work all through the night as well.

When we are not in the studio making music, we are at one show or the other. We travel a lot too. So, music is a way of life for us. Come rain or shine, this is what we’ve sacrificed our lives for and we have people who look up to us.

Has there been a time you felt the pressure to exit music?
How can you quit the only thing you know how to do? When we had issues at Mo’Hit Records, it was a trying time for everyone, including me. We were forced to face the whole media turmoil and we all suffered it. But it was not enough to quit music and we came out stronger.

Quitting is not even something you should ever consider as long as you have a passion for what you are doing. Regardless of your humble beginning, you cannot quit. If you hear Dele Momodu’s story, he didn’t have it on a platter of gold as a journalist but he never quit.

The challenges will be there and we cannot run from it. But anyone who neglects your struggle doesn’t know what life is all about.

At the time Mo’Hit Records collapsed, how were you able to stay friendly with D’banj and Wande Coal without betraying Don Jazzy?

The people who had a clash were the two at the top, D’banj and Don Jazzy. I didn’t have any problem with either D’banj or Wande Coal; so, our relationship has never changed a bit till date. And the same goes for other members too. I don’t think it will ever change unless I have personal issues with them. They are still my brothers.

Don Jazzy.

Did you consider starting a record company like D’banj and Wande Coal amid the crisis?

I did not think of leaving Don Jazzy to start my record company. I can’t leave my family; I am with him and I plan to be with him forever. I know the benefits of leaving and starting my own thing, but I don’t think I am prepared for that. I really want to build with my family.

The reason I am still alive today is because of my principles. I don’t interfere in issues that I have nothing to do with. I just want to focus on the only reason people know me for.

How have you managed to stay away from scandals?

My father and mother are very much in touch with what we do. I talk to them every day and they give us parental counsel. And right from the outset, we’ve been God-fearing. We are not just regular artistes who don’t have principles.

I also stay away from negative places, things that are negative and interviews that all they have to say borders on negativity. But I understand that sometimes when you stay away from trouble, it still comes.

Do you think it is ideal to get married before Don Jazzy?
I don’t think it matters; marriage has nothing to do with age. I’ve seen many situations where the last child got married before any other person in the family.

Even if Don Jazzy had been married, people would still not know. We want a private life, but when it comes to music, we like to have fun together. Involving your private life in music sometimes mixes up things, and doing so is setting up oneself to get hurt.

“I have a girlfriend, Bisola is too old for me” — 21 year old Jeff Akoh

21 year old Jeff Akoh, has been in the news of late, over viral reports that the may be linked romantically with ex-BBNaija Housemate, Bisola.

It all started with a tweet by Bisola who said she’s crazy in love with the Project Fame winner, and revealed details of her intimate relationship with the singer. [Read Here]

Although Bisola Aiyeola, has come out to deny being in a romantic relationship with 21-year-old Jeff Akoh, questions are still being asked. People are yet to accept it was just a publicity stunt as she later claimed.

21 year old Jeff Akoh

In a recent interview with Sunday Scoop, Jeff Akoh revealed that there was no way he could have been in a romantic tie with someone who was much older than him.

Recall that Bisola is about 10 years older than Jeff Akoh who is just 21.

The talented Jeff who recently released his debut album revealed that the tweet had been a joke and he was even present when it went out “I was there when she made the post and it was funny. She made the post in the night and when I woke up the next morning, it was everywhere.”

“But the truth is that she put her life on the line for me and I appreciate her for that. I can date someone older than me, but not by a 10-year difference,” he said.

The one-time Project Fame winner, also insisted that his girlfriend was carried along, explaining that she didn’t panic when she read about his romance with Bisola on different news platforms.

“All I ever wanted was for my family to be together, while fans wanted PSquare” — Peter Okoye

In a chat with Vibes Ng, Peter Okoye taled about his new single, “Cool it down”, and also talked about his issue with his brothers, Paul and Peter.

According to him, while he wanted was to keep his family together, all fans wanted was to have Psquare. He further disclosed that the Okoye brothers’ feud has lingered for four years.

“Some individuals decided to separate two individuals by saying this person is better than this person but my motto is, if you steal from Peter to pay Paul, you’re paying P-Square. Oh I hate this Peter. Well if you see two of us onstage with Peter on one side and Paul on the other side, you will watch the show like this (covering one side of his face with his phone).

The reason why I started responding to social media is because there was something that came out one time… My brother is my twin, fine, but you keep telling me blood is thicker than water.

Obviously you think Paul is my blood and my family is the water? You guys better be out of your minds. Being apart is the best solution at the moment. It’s not pride. It’s not ego. It’s respect. We’ve lost it. Last year, nobody knew what was happening.

‘When are you guys releasing a song?’ They did not know we were fighting but we’d still go on stage and perform. All I wanted was to keep the family together but what the fans wanted was to have Psquare.

We gave you guys Psquare even though the family had been fighting for about four years – even as of last year that we claimed we were back.

I cannot even face the shame of making the fans feel that we are okay.

We are not okay. It’s not healthy. I don’t have any problem with their families- the wives, everybody. I am cool with them. I don’t know what’s wrong. I don’t know why it looks as if the hatred is on my family. I’ve tried to ask them what the problem is but nobody is telling me anything.”

Anthony Joshua beats Carlos Takam by TKO to retain world heavyweight titles.

Anthony Joshua beats Carlos Takam

Anthony Joshua defended his Heavyweight title after he defeated Carlos Takam. The fight was stopped albeit controversially by the referee in the 10th round.

Anthony Joshua beats Carlos Takam

He had this to day after the match.

“I have no interest in what’s going on with the officials,” Joshua says during his in-ring interview. “I just worry about my opponent. Unfortunately, the ref stopped it. I think people wanted to see Takam unconscious on the floor, am I right?

“He was getting there. I didn’t have control over the ref’s decision. We get the win and now we look forward to 2018.”

Thank you Cardiff in coming. Not my job to worry about the referee it is my job to break my opponent down round by round. I think people want to see Takam unconscious on the ground, am I right? (Crowd cheers) And that was the point I was trying to get to. But I cannot control the referee.

Anthony Joshua beats Carlos Takam

He comes down and bobs up, like Holyfield. This is a championship, if I had not been able to breathe… then it would have been a massive disaster. But if I had showed any weakness the referee might have stepped in. That’s what the ref did to him, he jumped in early.

It feels broken. My plans now? To get my nose cracked back into place, for starters.

Anthony Joshua beats Carlos Takam

I cannot fight Joe Bloggs from nowhere. I have obligations. Once I have done them I will fight anyone. My door is open to all challengers.

It’s note my decision what happens outside the ring.

16 year old 100 level student of OAU commits suicide over poor grades

16 year old 100 level student

Mercy Olamide Afolaranmi, a student of Microbiology at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has committed suicide.

According to the school’s Chief Security Officer, Babatunde Oyatokun, Miss Afolaranmi, poisoned herself. Students and a neighbour close to the deceased also said she killed herself due to poor grade.

“We got a call that one of our students took poison,” Mr. Oyatokun said. “We got to hospital to realise that she mixed rat poison. She gave us the contact of her parents but before they arrived, she already gave up due to the effect of the poison she took.”

A neighbour, Bimpe Oni, in an interview with PREMIUM TIMES, said Miss Afolaranmi, who lived off-campus at Sabo area of Ile-Ife, died on Thursday, after she took “rat poison mixed with battery extract.”

Mrs. Oni said the late student committed suicide because of “emotional pressure.” A student, Aisha, who was Miss Afolaranmi’s colleague in the Faculty of Science, said the deceased had ‘E’ in CHM101 (Chemistry for first year students), a reportedly dreaded course for year one students in the science and technology related faculties.

“Mercy often isolated herself in class and looked depressed,” said Aisha. “She told me she had ‘E’ in CHM101 and has been going around unhappy before this incident.” Another student in the Faculty of Student, Opeyemi, said “she took poison because of result.”

The school’s Dean of Students’ Affairs, Isiaka Aransi, also confirmed the news. “Although the reason and cause of her death is yet to be known, the division is aware of the death of Mercy,” she said.

Before her death, on October 10, she posted on Facebook that: “Above all other things, I just wanna see God, see what He looks like, speak with Him face to face. I don’t wanna miss heaven. LORD HELP ME.”

Finally, you can now unsend WhatsApp messages…

How many times have you fired off a WhatsApp message only to be hit by that sudden, terrifying thought – ‘I really shouldn’t have sent that’. Well at last there’s a solution.

After months of development WhatsApp have started rolling out the Delete for Everyone feature, which allows you to recall messages after you’ve sent them. This applies to text messages, gifs, video, pictures… pretty much anything you can send on WhatsApp, however it must be done within seven minutes of sending the message.

How to recall messages on WhatsApp The much anticipated feature is easy to use. Simply highlight the message you wish you didn’t send, select Delete from the menu and then hit Delete for Eveyone. It’s only available to certain users at the moment and only on the latest version of WhatsApp, so head over to the App Store and download all those updates you’ve been continually putting off.

WhatsApp say the feature will be useful if your message ‘contains a mistake’, but we all know the new feature will really have three functions:

1. Damage control when you accidentally post a message to the group chat slagging someone off.
2. Letting you backtrack from a risky message to someone you’re flirting with.
3. The last line of defence when you accidentally send a message about last weekend’s illicit behaviour to your mother.

However, the people you are messaging can still see the message before you delete it (WhatsApp can’t delete things from people’s brains, after all), and even if you manage to recall a message before the other person returns to their phone, they will still be able to see ‘This message was deleted’.

WhatsApp will also let you know if the recall wasn’t successful, just so you know if you need to send a grovelling apology message or not.

When Rachel’s husband later returned from work and looked for the money, he did not find it. He asked around and Chioma then confessed taking it, claiming that she did not know what came over her to steal the money.

She was handed over to the police at Ago Division and she was charged before Isolo Magistrates court for stealing. She pleaded not guilty.

Babcock University spends N20 million on Electricity monthly – Vice Chancellor

Vice Chancellor of Babcock University, Prof Ademola S. Tayo has stressed the importance of quality in the running of the institution.

He said the university was not-for-profit, hence its provision for work study programme, endowment funds, among other initiatives, to assist indigent students’ access to quality education.

Prof Tayo, who spoke during a visit to Matori, Lagos State Head Office of The Nation newspaper said: “One of our core values is excellence and we would not compromise. But at the same time, because of the philosophy of quality education, we introduced the work-study programme whereby the indigent but diligent students would use their hands to work so that they can augment part of the fees needed to fund their education.

“They work in the cafeteria, library, etc. They get paid and that has helped many of them. We also have parents’ consultative forum where parents partner with management, so that we have a pool of funds that children who lose their parents while in school can have access to, in order to fulfill their dreams.

“We also have the ‘adopt a child scholarship’ where we reach out to our host community. Also, we serve as guarantor for parents to access loans for their children’s education. But most importantly, we believe in frugality. Our university is not-for-profit. Nobody shares one naira. It is ploughed back to make the system work better.”

The vice chancellor, who was accompanied by the institution’s management team noted that the institution was being funded solely with earnings from its bakery, Guest House, water factory and other industries, with only two per cent subsidy from its proprietor, The Seventh Day Adventist Church. He added that the university spent about N20 million monthly on electricity.

Prof Tayo noted that the university’s fees were not too high for the services provided, “as it runs 24-hour power supply and the fees also cover tuition, accommodation, laboratory, among other expenses.”

He said the institution will be graduating its pioneer medical students in December, informing that the students have completed their various degrees.

The Medical School, according to him, was establised in 2012.

He said: “One of the areas of excellence that we want to carve a niche in this country is in the area of medicine, which we started in 2012. We have our accreditations from the Medical and Dental Practitioners Council of Nigeria (MDCN) and National Universities Commission (NUC), International Board of Education, National Postgraduate College and the West African College of Physicians. This December, we will turn out our first graduates in the medical school. They have completed their clinical rotation in India.”

Managing Director of The Nation, Mr Victor Ifijeh pledged the organisation’s support for the educational development of the nation, while stressing the organisation’s dedication to objectivity, fairness, integrity and balanced reports.

He lauded Babcock University for its achievements in the education sector, and its swift rise to global standards.

Responding, Prof Tayo acknowledged The Nation for her growth in its ten years of existence noting that “The Nation is a force to reckon with. Your newspaper is always at the forefront. We want to thank God for the role you have played in shaping the public opinion by your accuracy and the way your news are reported”

Policeman abducts and rapes 14-year-old girl for 6 days in Anambra state

Policeman abducts

According to reports, a policeman attached to the Anambra State Police Command, has been accused of abducting and raping a 14-year-old for 6 days.

Identified as Barau Garba, the Anambra Policeman reportedly abducted and raped a 14-year-old child sent on an errand by her father, for 6 days.

It was gathered that the girl who lost the money given to her by her father to buy round cotton, was approached by Barau as she tried identifying the car she boarded. Tests carried out at Federal Medical Center, Asaba confirms there was indeed a penetration.

Facebook user, Ismaila Gambo Arabo who shared the story wrote;

“ABDUCTED AND RAPED FOR SIX DAYS BY A ROUGE NIGERIAN POLICE MAN.

Maryam Yusuf was just 14years old, an indigene of Kano state living with her parents in Asaba, Delta state. She does attend Islamic school in cable area known as Hausa quarters in Asaba, Delta state.

Maryam was sent by her father to Onitsha form Asaba on 14th of October 2017 to buy round cotton but unlucky for her she lost the money while on transit.

During her efforts to identify the vehicle she boarded, while standing by the road side, she was approached by one corporal Barau Garba (mopol) with service number 275601 from MOPOL 7 Sokoto state who was on a special duty in Anambra, his team were attached with OKPOKO police divisional headquarters, Onitsha.

The rouge police corporal approached the teenage girl asking her of what happened, as the small girl explained to him how she lost her money on transit and her need to go back home, the police man Barau Garba deceived her by asking her to join him on his motorcycle so that he can take her back home.

Instead of taking the teenage girl back home to her parents safely, this Nigerian police corporal decided to abduct her and took her to a temporary police base and locked her up in his room and maliciously raped her for six (6) good days. This police man raped this teenage girl until her vagina raptured.

For these six agonizing days, innocent Maryam was begging him to take her home but he refused. His waterloo reached its peak when on the 5th day, in the middle of the night the innocent Maryam took his mobile phone and called her father to come to her rescue.

Maryam was taken to hospital on 25th October 2017 (yesterday) by a good samaritan because the police in accord with the DPO of OKPOKO division are not forthcoming with her case. They want to cover up the case, especially as they told the father that the issue have to be forgiven since ‘they’ both the rouge police corporal Barau Garba and them are all of northern origin.

Attached here is the hospital patient card where innocent Maryam was taken and various tests were conducted, and it was ascertained she was raped beyond human imagination and left with a raptured vagina.

The IGP have to use a holistic approach to root out these bad eggs amongst the Nigerian police, just like how a sixty years old woman.

Who died from the police corruption, this Maryam Yusuf was defiled and humiliated by the same Nigerian police man.
Justice must be done here.

“I hope to live to age 125” — Read the story of the 92-yr-old woman with sickle cell disorder

Sickle Cell Disorder is one of the most common chronic yet treatable genetic disorders in Nigeria and several other parts of the world. Millions of those who encounter this disease often have tales of woe and lamentation to tell.

Living with this disorder is the only life that Alhaja Ashiata Aduke Onikoyi-Laguda has ever known since she was born on the 1st of November, 1925.

Widely acknowledged as the oldest person with Sickle Cell Disease in the world, Madam Onikoyi-Laguda has had a fulfilled life regardless of the chronic disorder.

Alhaja Asiata Aduke Onikoyi-Laguda With antecedents in the famous Onikoyi family of Isale Eko, in the heart of Lagos, Mama Ashiata (the righteous one) is a celebrity of international repute. Unarguably one of the oldest persons living with Sickle Cell Disorder, her home is a Mecca of sorts, people coming from all over the world to pay obeisance.

As she turns 92 in a few days, the matriarch is as full of life as ever even as she remains a relentless fighter against the enervating illness. A recent encounter with the nonagenarian was a pleasant surprise. Mama Onikoyi-Laguda, as she is fondly called, was having a late morning nap when Saturday Vanguard called at her residence, a story building in the heart of Ilasamaja, a Mushin suburb on Lagos Mainland.

She sat up in the double bed that was placed at one end of the spacious living room of the 3-bedroom apartment on the 1st floor of the modestly adorned building. Unhurried, she spoke: “You are welcome to my home.”

Her voice was soft but firm and steady. A bit wrinkled but not for the worse, Mama Onikoyi-Laguda exuded an aura of resoluteness, courage and determination. “Sit by my side,” she gestured, smiling to reveal a complete set of healthy dentures. Scattered on the bed are various items including a rechargeable fluorescent lamp, clothes, a walking stick and different volumes of the Holy Koran and the Holy Bible.

In the midst of the exchange of pleasantries, a young man in dreadlocks entered the room bearing a tray with a steaming hot plate of rice and spaghetti. He announces it’s lunch time and Mama requests to be excused to take her lunch. She introduced the young man as Bolaji Alakija, one of her grandsons. “Bolaji takes care of me. He cooks, washes and cares for me. “ After eating up half of the contents of the plate, Mama requested for an orange-flavoured bottle of soft drink. “I eat and drink whatever I want. I’m allowed to indulge as long as it is edible,” she announced to her guests.

Lunch over, she sat back and settled down to chat. Her memory is not as good as it used to be about a couple of decades ago, but she has enough agility to move around the apartment unaided. “I do not feel 92. I actually feel younger,” she said excitedly. “Even when I turned 90, I felt the same. But it is obvious age is telling on the energetic nonagenarian.

Even she confesses she is no longer able to cook her meals, wash her own clothes and do many of the things she used to do on her own. That is now the responsibility of Bolaji, her grandson who is now her guardian and full time housekeeper. Day she fell down “One thing I must admit however is that I cannot run again, not since I had a fall.” Relieving the incident, Mama admitted that she probably over did things. “It was not long after my 90th birthday.

On the day in question, I washed my clothes, spread them outside and then went out. But the weather changed and it appeared it was going to rain. I did not want my clothes to be ruined by rain and so I was rushing back home to gather the clothes when I tripped and fell face down.” She injured her right hand and for a whole year couldn’t use it properly. She couldn’t even eat with the hand.

Prior to her 90th birthday, Mama was still going out on her own “Now I have overcome the illness. There is nothing I don’t eat so long as it is edible. I do not like to worry my grandson, so since I fell, I can only walk in this living room and at times I walk downstairs. Going down memory lane, for Mama, in many perspectives, the pains of the Sickle Cell Disorder are a distant memory, confined into the past. For her, the worst is over.

No more pain, no more strain but a lot of gain. Early years “When I was born, they said I was Ogbanje (evil child) because no one understood the illness. My late mother had had a child that died previously and she was quite advanced in age when she had me. “My early years were full of pain,” she recounted with a glimmer in her eyes. “It was one crisis after another. My mother said the crises began when I was three years old and I had an attack of measles. The outcome was pain all through and till the end. “I was having pain in my hands and legs. The pain was so bad I was unable to eat using my hands.

Walking was also very difficult because of the pain in my legs.” Mama recalled that because of the persistent pain, she developed a habit of sitting or standing by the fireside. “Sometimes, my clothes got scorched because I was staying too close to the fire, but I thank God that now I can sleep under the fan and with the air-conditioner switched on.” On 30th of September 1960, the eve of Nigeria’s independence, Mama left the shores of Nigeria for the United Kingdom. She recounted the event. “In 1960 when I was to travel to England for further studies there were fears that I might not survive the cold weather over there. My mother in particular worried so much about this, but I was able to reassure her that the God that was keeping me alive in Nigeria would also keep me alive in England. So I travelled to England and even gave birth to a child in 1962 while I was there. That child is Mrs Mosun Adeniji.”

As she spoke, Mama pointed to a framed photograph on her bedside stool. “That is Mosun’s child, my grandchild – Ore. One of her sons, Funbi is now over 30. We live here together. School days “I was admitted into Queens College in 1948 at age 13 and was quite an intelligent student. I remember being in the examination hall, and being asked to stand up. Initially I thought I did something wrong, but I was moved into Form 3 instead of Form 1. I could not start school earlier because of this disorder and largely because of my father. Everybody knew I had Sickle Cell Disorder. It was not hidden the way it is hidden now. “In fact, chances were that if my father hadn’t died at the time he did, I might not have been educated because he over-pampered me to the extent of preparing eba with sugar for me. “My father cared for me so much he spoiled me.

His sympathy for me was beyond measure. Unfortunately he died young and I had to go and stay with my mother on who the onus now fell to ensure I was educated.” As a kid, it was a big challenge for her late mother who had to strive to no end to send her beloved daughter to school. Life in England “But my mother summoned the courage, strength and knowledge to see me through. I went to England on the eve of Nigeria’s Independence on the same plane that brought Princess Alexandria that came to declare Nigeria an independent nation on 1st of October 1960. Our independence was celebrated all over the world.

There was no sleep in England on that day. All the hotels were opened all night and everybody enjoyed themselves.

“I went abroad as a student even though I had given birth to four children. I was tiny in appearance, and no one would easily know I had four children. But I opted for that because I wanted to have a cheaper rate of transport. When I went to England my mother was trading in Sierra Leone but I begged her to come back home to help take care of my four children. However, she later regretted the idea of leaving her four children back home in Nigeria as she became lonely in England and soon realized she needed them for companionship. Mama was in England for four years. She went to the Pitman’s College and got employed in the Post and Telecommunications (P&T) as a Teleprinter Operator. “We started the use of the teleprinter at that time and we were taught how to operate it. There was no dull moment all through.”

Her typical day begins quite early. After the morning prayers and a trip to the bathroom, breakfast is next.

“Sometimes I have a late breakfast, but usually take something not too light and not too heavy. I do not sleep much because I’m prayerful and I watch TV a lot. In fact, my TV set is permanently on, I have my Bible and Koran, which I like to read when there is power supply. If there is no power, I know some psalms off hand and recite them.” As if to prove her prowess, she recited Psalm 24 in Yoruba.

Mama recalls that she has been on holy pilgrimage to Mecca 13 times. “I went whenever I had the strength and the money. The first time I went, it was quite challenging. I quickly learned that it is important to have a good heart to go on the pilgrimage. If you don’t have a clean heart you cannot perform Hajj.”

Does Mama have regrets?

Her straight answer is no. “I have no regrets. God has given me a good attitude of prayer, there is no problem one cannot overcome with prayer, just open your mouth. It is a weapon God has given us. He says we should ask of anything and it would be given to us. He always does it. But the law of God, the one about loving your neighbour as you love yourself, and doing no harm must not be flouted. “If we regard ourselves and brothers and sisters, this world would be a better place. I regard you as mine because if you do not love me you would not be here.

I’m grateful for the Genotype Foundation and Doris Gemiloye and what they have done for me. “Sickle cell is not a condemnation, if you learn to manage it, you can live with it. It is because I’m old now that I am not too active.

I used to go to the hospital when I was stronger, and the health providers always looked after me. I used to trek from here (Ilasamaja) to Oshodi, then down to Mushin just to exercise, I washed my clothes the way I wanted. Today, Nigeria is what we are making it, leaders should be more concerned about the people.

Why is there no power supply?

Don’t we have the money to generate the power or what is the problem? We know it is because there is no sincerity, and until we have a change of heart and be concerned about each other. I’m optimistic Nigeria will improve. We will keep praying Secret of longevity

What’s Mama’s secret?

“I have no secret, I know my God and I know that anything I want, I can get from Him. All he demands is that I love my neighbour as I love myself. I have had a fulfilled life. I practice my religion, I love people around me, I do not look for unnecessary things and everyone that comes near me loves me. People love me and that helps a lot. I thank God for that.

“People living with Sickle Cell Disorder should take care of themselves; follow their own dos and don’ts. When it is cold I keep warm, when it is warm I stay warmer, I eat normally, balanced diet. Be prayerful, know your God. He is the greatest strength we have. Future expectations As I am turning 92, my expectation for Nigeria is that we love one another much more than ever before. When we love one another and stop segregation of ethnicity, we would be doing what is right. God has blessed this country so much,

“I am hoping to live up to 125 years. My father did not live long, my mother died at 70, but my grandfather, known as Baba Alawo lived to be over 120 years. He resided in Ibadan and used to fast a lot. When my husband was about to die, his last wish was that I should stay here in this house. That was 25 years ago and I’m still here, marching on. I promised him I would be here till I join him, He died in 1992 “I do not go to the mosque again.

I used to go until I fell. But now they come to see me. Since I was in kindergarten I have been taught that God is a spirit and he sees me all the time. Sickle cell disease is a chronic sickness that doesn’t let go. I have it and have had it since I was born. I don’t know life without sickle cell disease. All the pain, daily aches, and crucial crises that came out of nowhere are gone. Sickle cell is never predictable and has impacted my life beyond words. But I’ve learned to cope with it. I’m fulfilled.”

When asked to speak about his grandmother, Bolaji who was named after his grandfather Abimbolaji Alakija, was not short of words. “I would love to write a whole book. She is my grandmother, beyond that she is my heroine, saviour, mentor, and guardian on earth. “She has been the angel sent to ensure my journey on earth is meaningful. Without her there is no me. I’m the one caring for her now. I owe her a lot and there is nothing I can do to repay her kindness.
