The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Sunday branded the University of Ilorin (Unilorin) as a “terrorist organization” as far as the industrial relation is concerned.

The union made it know in a statement after the institution reportedly sacked the ASUU chairman in the school, Dr. Kayode Afolayan, for allegedly ‘exposing the impunity, lawlessness and disregard for due process’ in the University.

In the statement sighted on the Vanguard which was signed by Dr Ade Adejumo and Dr. Deji Omole, the Zonal Coordinator of the Ibadan Zone of ASUU and Chairman, University of Ibadan Chapter, they claimed that the outgoing Vice-Chancellor at Unilorin, Prof. Abdulganiyu Ambali, who is allegedly behind the termination of the ASUU chairman in the school, illegally handed a temporal appointment to his wife Dr (Mrs) Taiwo Toyin Ambali.

“The outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdulganiyu Ambali took all these to an unprecedented height when in 2015, he smuggled his wife, Dr (Mrs) Taiwo Toyin Ambali, into the University through the temporary appointment route as Lecturer 1. By 2016, less than one year later, she had been promoted to the rank of Senior Lecturer, when the Regulation specifies at least three years before such a promotion could take place.

“Our branch Chairperson, Dr. Kayode Afolayan, on behalf of the union, signed a letter addressed to the Council to look into the infringement against the University Rules and Regulations committed by Prof Ambali. However, rather that retrace his steps, the outgoing vice-chancellor issued a query to the branch chairperson, Dr. Kayode Afolayan, alleging that they circulated an unspecified “leaflet” against the vice-chancellor.

“The union promptly alerted members of the public to the evil plans of Prof Ambali to sack our officers in Unilorin. Just yesterday, 21st September 2017, the University Administration completed another cycle of impunity, lawlessness, and disregard for due process with the termination of appointments of the branch Chairperson. Gentlemen of the press, this very unfortunate development has again exposed the evil going on in the University of Ilorin.

“The University has devised all means to suppress legitimate industrial activities in order to avoid exposure of its misdeeds. Indeed, the University prides itself in its ability to “kill off” staff and students that are connected in any way to ASUU leadership. This hate crime on the part of the University is usually carried out under the guise of the uninterrupted academic calendar.

“Yet, many Universities have also maintained a stable academic calendar without destroying union members or their careers. To all intents and purposes, UNILORIN has become a terrorist organization as far as the industrial relation is concerned. Equally worrisome is the seeming connivance of relevant authorities with Unilorin in its dastardly pursuit. For example, our union, since December 2016, had submitted petitions to the EFCC, ICPC and the CCB but until now results of ongoing investigations have not been made known to the public.

“Our union also wrote petitions to the Ministry of Education and the Visitor to the School but no concrete step has been taken. The silence by these relevant agencies and authorities casts serious doubt on the commitment of the government in the anti-graft war especially in the University of Ilorin where there are glaring manifestations of corruption.

“This has emboldened UNILORIN to embark on the victimization of the whistleblowers in the University. Our union wishes to reiterate that it will not sit by and watch the continuous victimization of its members in the University of Ilorin. We warn that the crisis of the University of Ilorin is once again on the verge of ballooning into a national crisis reminiscent of 2001 when the same University sacked 49 academics in one fell swoop.

“The Union calls on all well-meaning Nigerians and the appropriate authorities to intervene urgently to restore justice in the University and stave off a needless crisis. Members of the public and the press are also to take note that, in line with the Union’s constitution and code of practice, the purportedly sacked Chairman of the branch remains the bonafide Chairman of the Union in UNILORIN.

“The University of Ilorin had on the 19th September, 2017 in a letter titled Termination of appointment signed by the Registrar and Secretary to the Council of the University E. D Obafemi stated that Council at its 155th meeting held on Monday 28th August 2017 considered the report from the 41st meeting of staff disciplinary committee held on Wednesday 7th June 2017, 8th June 2017 and Thursday, June 2017 and approved that your services are no longer required. Consequently, it directed that you should be relieved of your appointment. Accordingly, your appointment is hereby terminated with effect from the date of this letter.’

The statement comes days after the Nigerian military branded the pro-Biafra separatist group, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), as a militant “terrorist organization.”

A 10-year-old boy, identified as Chimobi, has been taken into protective custody by the Lagos State Government after his brother’s wife, Gift Igwe, allegedly set him ablaze at their home on Adenugba Street, Agunfoye, Ikorodu.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the offence of the Ishielu, Ebonyi State indigene, was that he misplaced his trousers and could not produce them when Gift demanded them from him.

Residents of the community, who heard the cry of the victim, put out the fire, during which he reportedly passed out.

Chimobi was subsequently rushed to the Ikorodu General Hospital, Ikorodu.

Policemen from the Igbogbo division were said to have arrested the suspect.

Officials of the Office of the Public Defender, who had been monitoring the treatment of Chimobi, took him into custody.

A source told PUNCH Metro that the child was brought to Lagos in 2016 by the brother to start living with his family.

He said since then, Gift had been abusing Chimobi, adding that matter came to a head when she set him ablaze that Wednesday.

He said, “He is the younger brother of the man, who is a security guard in a firm. He was not enrolled in any school after he was brought from the village. The brother wanted him to be assisting the wife, who had a baby about a year ago, with house chores and other things.

“The woman has been abusing him for some time now. There are marks of past floggings on his body. He also has sores.

“People in the community could no longer keep quiet when the last incident happened on Wednesday, September 6. She poured kerosene on the boy and lit him with a matchstick.”

Chimobi, who spoke with Punch on Saturday, said he had some education before he was brought to Lagos from Ebonyi.

He explained that his brother and his wife had refused to enrol him in a school since he started living with them.

“I misplaced my trousers and ‘mummy’ (sister-in-law) poured kerosene on me and used a matchstick to light fire. People came to help me. I have not been going to school since they brought me from the village,” he said.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Olarinde Famous-Cole, confirmed the incident.

He noted that Gift had been granted bail because of her child, saying she was mandated to be reporting at the police station daily.

He said, “We gathered that the boy was accused of misplacing something and because of that, she got kerosene and set him ablaze. Some Good Samaritans put out the fire. The boy is recuperating.

“When our attention was called to the case, we ensured the prompt treatment of the boy at the Ikorodu General Hospital. We also involved other government agencies, including a human right group working with the police in that area. The suspect was arrested and interrogated.

“She is a nursing mother; she has a child that is less than two years old. She has been admitted to bail with instruction to be reporting daily to the Investigating Police Officer and the Office of the Public Defender, pending the conclusion of investigation.”

The Director of the OPD, Mrs. Olubukola Salami, said the victim had been taken into protective custody.

She said, “This is a case of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm and also an abuse of the child. The Government of Lagos state is poised to putting an end to all forms of domestic violence and child abuse. The OPD has been mandated to ensure that justice is done and the perpetrator brought to book for this barbaric act.”

A man was on Sunday arrested inside the kitchen of the Rev. Fr. Francis Effiong, the Parish Priest of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, located at the University of Calabar (Unical), Cross River State.

The suspect was arrested after stealing meat from the refrigerator of the priest, who had the left his house by 9 a.m for a mass. The suspect, who claims to be a prison warden, was apprehended just as he was leaving the kitchen with bags of meat in both hands.

According to a source: “Before today’s incident, many other items such as washing machines, television sets, cookers, and so on have been missing from the house. He lives in the boys’ quarters just directly behind the priest’s kitchen”, he said.

Christian numerologist, David Meade, predicted that the world would end on Saturday, September 23, 2017.

Today is Sunday, September 24th, meaning the world is still going on, sorry Meade. Now that his prediction has proven wrong, the researcher has a new date for rapture.

According to Daily Mail, Meade says that we should still prepare for the end of the world which has just been delayed but will now happen in October.

Basically, what he is saying is that this Saturday is only the beginning of the end times. Thus, we should be looking out for deadly events, that will eventually lead to the end of the world as we know it.

Yahoo 7 News reports that September is the“sign month”, that will “get the ball rolling” and trigger the apocalyptic events (a “tribulation period”) that will lead to the end of the world.

Meade’s prediction is based on the Bible and Planet X, also known as Planet 9 or Nibiru, which he says will pass the Earth on September 23rd in his book called ‘Planet X — The 2017 Arrival.’

His theory was initially aided when a new planet was discovered by NASA in the solar system.

Still, NASA is dismissing Meade’s claims with an updated post titled: ‘Beyond 2012: Why the World Didn’t End.’ It was originally posted in 2012.

It said: “Various people are “predicting” that world will end Sept. 23 when another planet collides with Earth. The planet in question, Niburu, doesn’t exist, so there will be no collision.

Tragedy struck at No. 50 Wright Street Adekunle, Yaba, Lagos on September 6, after a man identified as Okiki Arisekola, reportedly killed his pregnant lover, Islamat Bolaji.

The commercial bus driver has been declared wanted by the police for beating the estranged mother of his child, who got pregnant for another man to death.

The suspect had a quarrel with her over the custody of their 11-month-old daughter named Kemi before beating her to death, according to the deceased’s 64-year-old grandmother, Mrs Gbemisola Agbola who said she had lost Ismalat’s mother, Aishat at just exactly the same age.

Saturday Sun learnt that Arisekola was said to have been dating the victim since 2015 and the union produced the baby girl. However, he showed no move to marry her, apparently because he was still trying to find his feet. But he took responsibility for his daughter.

The deceased’s father, Isiaka Bolaji, was also inconsolable. Islamat was his first daughter and was nursing a little child she already had with her killer.

“He has not been visiting my daughter, but recently he just started coming and my daughter grew suspicious of his visits,” said Isiaka Bolaji

“On the fateful day, when he came, they were together at first, then he left, on his return they started quarreling nobody paid them attention, because that was how they always fought. But, this time, it led to a physical fight and Okiki beat my daughter into a coma. After some minutes that he had left, my daughter fell and became motionless. We rushed her to the hospital and it was there she died,” Bolaji recalled of the incident.

Pointing to a spot on the floor, Mrs Agbola said:

“This is where I stood when I saw my granddaughter faint right before me just as her mother gave up the ghost,”

“She was just recovering from a fever attack. She had not done any work for close to a week. On that day, she decided to treat herself with some medication. She asked me to hold on to the child, an 11-month-old baby, I took the child and placed him on my lap. Not long after, Islamat’s sister, Kemi came in and asked me to give her the baby, I did and Kemi caressed the baby. She stepped out with her only to meet Okiki standing outside. He demanded to take the girl away and Kemi gave him the baby. But when Islamat saw Okiki with the child, she rushed to take the baby from him.

“They dragged the baby between them, while Kemi stood looking at them. Okiki tried to leave with the baby, but Islamat didn’t allow him, because she feared that he was going to use the child for rituals. It was a passerby that called my attention to Okiki merciless beating of my granddaughter, I almost had high blood pressure, I rushed out and called my granddaughter. As I was leading her back into the house, she fell and fainted. The first hospital we took her to didn’t have doctors on call, but before we could get to the health center she died. It was confirmed by the doctors there,” the grandmother said.

Though Mrs. Agbola could not confirm speculation that the deceased was pregnant, however she said;

“There had been rumours about her being pregnant, but she said that she was not, so I didn’t ask her who the father was.”

It was also gathered that after Islamat got regnant again probably for another man, the suspect stepped up visits and demands to have his daughter back.

The immediate past General Evangelist of The Christ Apostolic Church, Prophet Samuel Abiara, in a recent interview with PUNCH said, ‘there is no way corruption will end in Nigeria before Jesus Christ comes’.

My advice to the greedy ones among us is that they should strive to do work that will speak well for them after death’.

A drunk man who tried to impress a woman he met at a bar raced after her in a rented Lamborghini – but then crashed into a tree.

In a bid to win over the woman, the driver chased her in the Lamborghini and tried to impress by overtaking her on the street, she told police.

Traffic camera footage shows the Lamborghini Gallardo, rented for £648 per day, swerving right and then left on a highway.

The driver then veers into the other lane, losing control, before slamming into a tree.

The 22-year-old driver, whose surnamed is Teng, was found guilty of drink-driving and has been detained for further questioning in Jinhua City, China.

To add salt to the wounds, the woman then drove by the crash site and recorded a video mocking the man trying to win her affection.

But then she was also arrested for driving without a licence.
