Robert Mugabe’s spokesperson has responded to those who accuse the Zimbabwean president of falling asleep at public events.
He claims that the 93-year-old isn’t sleeping, but is only protecting his aged eyes from the bright lights.
George Charamba was quoted by the state-owned Herald newspaper as saying that President Mugabe travels regularly to Singapore to receive specialised treatment for an eye condition.
He said:
“I feel like a failure when there is this reading that the President is sleeping in conferences. No. At 93, there is something that happens to the eyes and the president cannot suffer bright lights. If you look at his poise, he looks down, avoids direct lighting.”
The spokesman made a comparison with Nelson Mandela whose eyes were sensitive to flash photography, saying:
“In the case of Mandela, if you remember, you were not allowed to even use flashes whenever he was in the room. This is what happens at 93 and Mandela, I do not think lived as long as the president.”
Acting President Yemi Osinbajo today gave some glimpses into the personal and official relationships he has shared with President Muhammadu Buhari.
On a visit to Katsina to launch the state’s Micro, Small and Medium Scale Enterprises Clinic, Prof. Osinbajo disclosed that the President had been treating him as a brother and son.
He stated that the responsibilities Buhari gave him are proofs that he seriously believes that we can live as brothers in this country.
The Acting President who earlier paid a visit to the Emir of Katsina, Dr. Abdulmumini Kabir Usman, also spoke about his close relationship with President Muhammadu Buhari at the palace reception.
One of the reasons why I feel very much at home in Katsina State is because this is the State of our President, President Muhammadu Buhari, who has taken me more like a brother; in fact sometimes more like a son than a Vice President.”
He commended the Government and people of Katsina State for being a role model in terms of peaceful co-existence of all ethnic tribes and religions in the State.
At the launch of the Katsina State’s MSMES Clinic, Osinbajo averred that the Federal Government’s newly launched Economic Recovery & Growth Plan (EGRP) places high premium on the nation’s capacity to grow it’s export potentials rather than continue on the unsustainable path of total dependence on import.
He said the focus of the Plan is to develop “the capacity of Nigerians to do everything that we need internally; to become a net exporter of the various things that we are importing today.”
Explaining Federal Government’s reason for the inauguration of the MSMEs Clinics that is now going round major cities in the country, Prof Osinbajo stated that it was designed to give small businesses the opportunity to meet with the industry regulators, to talk to them and to hear their problems.
He explained that the idea of the MSMES clinics which he has personally attended for the fourth time now is the Buhari administration’s effort to close the gap between MSMES and relevant FG regulatory agencies like NAFDAC, CAC, SON, BOI, FIRS and others and ensure that those agencies become facilitators of businesses not obstacles to business development.
Prof Osinbajo who declared the MSMEs Clinic open in absential of the President due to a follow-up on his medicals, was accompanied to Katsina by the Minister of State for Aviation, Hadi Sirika, Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Hajia Aisha Abubakar, Chairman of Federal Inland Revenue Service, Babatunde Fowler and Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Senator Babafemi Ojudu.

Solomon Dalung, Minister of Youth and Sports Development has shown fear and concern that universities in Nigeria may start producing “Imams and Pastors” due to the fact that they offer courses outside what they are commissioned to do.
During the inauguration of the Governing Councils of 23 federal universities in the country, The 53-year-old spoke yesterday saying it was the decision of the Federal Executive Council that the universities should stick to their specialties.
Specialized institutions include universities of agriculture and the universities of technology.
Dalung said:
“I am a member of the Federal Executive Council and I stand with the decision and the wisdom of specialized universities limiting themselves to their core mandate. The laws creating these universities are very clear.
What business does the university of agriculture have in producing lawyers and accountants? If we are not careful, in future they will produce imams and pastors.
We have so many universities of agriculture that abandoned their specialty and they are producing accountants and mechanics, they will soon be producing footballers.
After carefully examining the laws that created these universities, the Federal Executive Council took this decision. We came to the decision that these universities should concentrate on their specialty.
It was not an arbitrary decision. It has broad consultation. The AGF was invited so I think what we did was the best for the country for now.”
Chairman, House Committee on Tertiary Education and TETFund, Suleiman Aminu, also spoke extensively on the decision of the government to ban general courses offered by specialized universities.
He said:
“Some persons must be cut out from our universities of Agriculture and Technology but I don’t believe that decision has received the best of consultations across the country. I said it because we have received serious petitions disagreeing with this decision of the government.
The world over, there are several universities of specialized fields that are actually not restricted to that particular discipline measure. We have met with the public, particularly those that are very informed on this issue.
We have met with the representatives of NUC, JAMB and the vice chancellors and we will invite more for us to benefit from their knowledge.
The laws establishing those institutions must be reviewed. If you go ahead and do it without actually changing the Act, there may be little problem. We are not against this change if it would benefit the system and Nigeria.
We can assure you of our spot as usual but where there are concerns I think particularly are where the laws that established these institutions do not have very clear mandate. I think the Federal Executive Council should make consultations”.

The lady was declared missing On the 28th of April 2017, and has since been unreachable. The Father, Tshepo Mokoena took to Facebook yesterday, to cry for help after his daughter was missing for over 2 weeks..
Now, this Morning, Her father has confirmed that His daughter’s boyfriend has confessed to killing and burning his daughter.
“He killed and burned my daughter,” wrote Tshepo in the post.
His post has elicited condolences messages from his Friends with one stating that he was a criminal lawyer if he needed any help he must call him.

Meeting with the newly released 82 Chibok girls, First lady of the country, Aisha Buhari, on Wednesday, pledged her support in the resettlement of the recently rescued Chibok school girls.

Joy overflowed in Plateau State on Tuesday, May 9th, when a sixty-three-year-old woman said to be the oldest In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) recipient in Africa, gave birth to a healthy baby girl at the Gynaeville Specialist hospital, in Jos, through caesarean section.
The bouncing baby girl delivered at about 36 weeks around 10:51am weighed 135 kilogramme.
The new mother, Margaret Davou, who is a retired civil servant, and lives in Jos South local government area of the state, said she has been married for 38 years without a child, adding that she made an attempt in the past to conceive through assisted-reproductive health but failed.
The surgery was carried out by Jos-based senior Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), Dr. Dalyop Nyango, and Consultant Gynaecologist, Jibrin Suleiman. They said both mother and baby are in stable condition.
One of the members of the team, Dr. Kenneth Egwuda, chairman of Gynaeville, said the “woman is the oldest to achieve pregnancy at the age of 62 in Africa. Based on available records, Mrs. Davou is the oldest woman in Africa to successfully undergo the procedure and give birth”, thereby making history.
Chief Surgeon, Dr. Caleb Miango, noted that the CS was done successfully without any complication, adding that with the new technology, it is possible to achieve pregnancy at old age.
“As you can see, most of our patients have to go abroad, especially India, to achieve pregnancy. But today, we can achieve such in Nigeria and even here on the Plateau,” he said.
Plateau State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Kuden Kamshak, applauded the management of the hospital for recording such feat and achievement in the state. He promised to look at ways in which government could partner with the hospital to subsidise the treatment for women who need such services.
Her husband, Mr. Samson Davou, thanked God and the hospital management for their effort in assisting his wife to deliver safely.
