To get international passports, Nigerians to start showing evidence of tax payment

The Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, on Monday said soon, Nigerians might begin to show evidence of tax payment before obtaining their passports.

Tunde Fowler said this at the 136th meeting of the Joint Tax Board which had the theme: “Increased Inter-Agency Co-operation to Enhance Tax Compliance and Optimise Revenue Collection” in Abuja.

He said: “We did take a position and I believe it would be implemented in the very near future that before you get any services from the immigration department: renewal of passports etc, you’d have to show that you are a tax payer.

These things are normal all over the world, In an effort to serve Nigerians and Nigeria better. People believe that payment of tax is a burden and I’ll repeat that you only pay tax on income and profits.

So if you reside in Nigeria and you are benefiting from being a Nigerian resident, it is only fair that you contribute to the system that makes you enjoy that standard of living.”

Popular Fuji musician, Adewale Ayuba, has opened up on his initial fear after he got converted to Christianity.Ayuba, now commonly known as Mr. Johnson, was born and bred in a Muslim family.

According to the ex-staunch Muslim, he had been a Christian since 2010, but hasn’t been practicing it for fear of being killed.

The ‘Ijo Fuji’ songster made this known in an open confession in the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, weekend.

While admitting that he is now proudly a full Christian, he said, “I have been a Christian for so long, even my family members especially my kids are all going to church but I make sure I go every December 31st. If I don’t, I will presume the New Year would be filled with dangers that will lead to my death.

“I was always scared of admitting to the world that I’m Christian, for fear of being killed, but now I have the courage to say it boldly, I’m a born-again Christian. I’m no more a Muslim,” Ayuba added.

1. She got an STD from him

According to her, “He had given me an STI in the past. He’d returned from a trip once and we had sex, and a few days later I was itching.

I went to the doctors and they prescribed medication, but when I asked Maje about the infection he denied knowing anything about it. I went through his phone and saw a conversation with Anita where she complained that she had been itching.

This wasn’t news to Maje, more like an update that she was giving him on a situation that he already knew about.
He asked her what the doctor’s report said and what was prescribed.

I knew I would be putting myself at risk if I closed my eyes to whatever he chose to do on the side. So I went back to putting all my attention into my work.”

2. She also admitted to bleaching because of him

“I had been with Maje from when I was an immature teenager, through my twenties, and for most of those years, Anita had been the standard I had to live up to. I had lightened my skin at some point – Anita was half Lebanese and half Ibibio, and Maje made me feel like he preferred her lighter skin.”

3. He wanted a sex tape

“At some point while we were dating, Maje had asked if he could tape us having sex. This was a new one for me but I would do anything to keep my man, or so I thought, and so I obliged.

But I was nervous afterwards because I didn’t want the tape to get into the wrong hands…. I dragged the file back to his desktop, and I could tell from the stilled image in the video that the person in it was not me…. I clicked play and watched horrified as Maje had sex with Anita.”

4. He called off their wedding several times

It happened to this female corp member named Dumbira Efe Bukola, serving in Akure and she is still in shocks.

This was me yesterday morning, hale and hearty, full of life before I stepped out to work not knowing of the danger that lies ahead……?

As I closed from work, took a bike to a supermarket called NAO along cathedral Akure, after picking few stuffs i needed, I crossed to the other side to board a taxi to my estate called Ijapo here in Akure, then I waved this taxi and the driver stopped, I moved closer and told him ijapo then he asked me to get in.

Inside the car I met two already seated at the back, then one at the front seats with the driver making 4, we became 5 plus me but after a few second of driving a guy from the back alighted, leaving two of us at the back sit, then the guy with me at the back sit told the driver to pack that he wants to drop too and the driver asked, “bro! Are you the owner of the Ghana must go filled with dollars at the booth, the guy replied yes and the driver said il drive you to our chairman at the garage, you want to put me in trouble abi? You entered my taxi with such big amount of money without telling me.”

Immediately I told the driver what right has he got to open a passengers bag, b4 I finished this statement the guy who claimed to own the bag started crying, begging the driver not to expose him , that he works with one Alhaji at Lagos who sells gold and change dollars then Alhaji just died and everyone absconded with what they like, that inside the bag he had 1.5m dollars.

Immediately my guardian angel appear and instructed me to look at the side mirror of both front seat I did, behold the first guy had scar all over his face and the driver’s eyeball covered in blood but already healing. Immediately I shouted with my whole strength “Drop me now!!!

He said “Aunty you need to follow us, today is our lucky day, this guy will settle us”.

Again I yelled “I say Drop me now!!!!”

Then he parked drop me off on motion around oja market and zoomed off.

God saved me! Then people gathered round me and started sharing thier experiences. A woman told me that normally they have jazzed me but it wasn’t effective on me that, as I entered the taxi I am suppose to agree with them the next thing il find myself in a bush!

After raping me turn by turn, they will take my naked pic, give me other concoction to swallow, dispose me off my valuables, drive me at night to an ATM, where il withdraw all my money for them, and if I am from a rich family they will set me free but they’ll be calling me to bring them huge amount of money or threaten to release the pics to social media , and if i am not from a rich family, that’s how they’ll sell to the ritualistic , or do the cutting themselves.

I was in shock, crying and weeping profusely as I thank my father In Heaven for not making my years of suffer go down just like that. If you’re within Akure please be careful, they are roaming the streets freely, I wonder what the force men are doing about this, if you go out and see 20taxis, I assure you 6 to 7 of them are set of this guyz!

Fellow corpers be careful, everyone at Akure open your eyes and don’t let love of money make you fall victim, I heard lots of people are missing , some are found with their hair scraped , while some are dead with many parts missing.

The Point newspaper in an article dated November 25, reports that the camp of President Muhammadu Buhari may be planning to replace VP Yemi Osinbajo with a politician from the South East ahead of the 2019 elections.

The paper reports that the presidency plans to woo a former governor of Abia state, Orji Uzor Kalu, as a possible replacement for Osinbajo in the next general elections so as to pacify the southeast.

According to The Point, the Buhari camp, sensing a potential loss of support and electoral votes from the south west, in the event of the Tinubu forces pulling out, is tinkering with options to win over the south east and perhaps south south blocs.

“With many gladiators, who joined forces to see APC through to victory during the last elections already fingered in the movement to form a new mega party, there is intense calculation being done to get a crowd-puller from the South East geo-political zone. This is to garner substantial votes from the region to shore up what may be lost should the South West go with Tinubu,” one of the sources said.

A radio presenter based in Tarkwa in the Western region of Ghana has allegedly been murdered during a fight over a 15-year-old girl.

The deceased, Kojo Quayson who was an employee of Tarkwa-based Pure FM was said to have been hit on the back of his head with a fufu pestle by the father of the teenager.

The suspect, Ali Mohammed, according to reports, was angered when the late Quayson disregarded his order not to see his teenage daughter again.

Uncle of the deceased in an interview with Adom News said, the late radio presenter on Sunday November 27, 2016 went to look for the girl in the absence of her father.

“His elder daughter called him on phone to inform him about Quayson’s visit and Ali quickly rushed to the house” he added.

The uncle noted that, Ali out of anger confronted the deceased which resulted in a fight and allegedly hit Quayson’s head with a fufu pestle.

The deceased who was also the Safety officer at Goldfields Ghana Limited Tarkwa Mines lost consciousness and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

His uncle indicated that, he is not surprised about the conduct of Ali since he had always threatened to kill his nephew.

Seriously, are our policemen this desperate ?! This is just pure evil… and to think that the man who was to be implicated only tried to help and he was paid back with evil ? Nawa oh…

“Please, be careful to give any Policeman a lift when traveling. My friend gave one a lift on his way to Ibadan recently. The officer sat in front of the car and was also going to Ibadan.

All of a sudden, he changed his mind and came down at Shagamu junction. My friend suspecting something was wrong drove down a bit and decided to check the seat where the officer sat. Lo and behold, he saw 4 bullets carefully tucked under the seat the Policeman sat.

He picked them and threw them into the bush. Few kilometres after, he was stopped at a check point and was asked to come down for stop and search.

They searched for more than 30mins. Puzzled, he asked what the matter was? No answer. He noticed one of them was on phone all the while and he kept quoting his plate number on the phone.

After 1hr of search, nothing was found then he was asked to go.

Obviously the officer he gave a lift wanted to implicate him which failed.

GSM Subscribers To Pay More For Data From Dec 1st. (1.5gib Now 3k)

Subscribers of the Global System of Mobile telecommunications across the country would pay more for data with effect from December 1, 2016, The PUNCH learnt on Monday.

Although the telecoms companies declined to speak on the matter, top management workers across the networks confirmed the story to our correspondent, saying that the directive was from the Nigerian Communications Commission.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, a senior management employee of Etisalat Nigeria said,

“The NCC issued the directive late last week on the orders of the Federal Government. We have not announced it yet because most of the major telcos have been meeting the NCC on how to reverse this policy, because it will be too harsh for Nigerians.

“However, we further gathered that the Federal Government took the decision having discovered that data rates are very low-priced in Nigeria, compared to other countries, including nearby African countries.

“The government might have also taken the decision given that Nigerian subscribers have been kicking against the proposed nine per cent Communication Tax, whose bill is currently in the National Assembly.”

Pleading not to be mentioned, an employee of MTN said,

“What this means is that MTN, Airtel, Etisalat And Globacom will increase their data rates as from December 1, 2016. A data plan of N1,000 for 1.5 Gigabytes will now be increased to N3,000 at N1,000 per 500 Megabytes.”

In text messages sent out to its subscribers, MTN, Africa’s mobile telecommunications giant, confirmed that it had agreed to implement the directive of the NCC.

The MTN text read, “Dear customer, please be informed that from 1st of December, some MTN data tariffs will be increased to reflect the new rates set by the NCC for operators. Thank you.”

The PUNCH could not obtain an official response from the NCC at of the time of filing this report.

However, a representative of the commission said that the telecoms regulator was unaware of such plans by the operators, even as she said her bosses had claimed ignorance of the circulated message.

“We are unaware of it. I just asked my bosses; they are unaware. We will forward your query to MTN for appropriate attention,” she said over the telephone.

However, in a letter by the NCC to the operators sighted by our correspondent, the commission stated,

“This rate will subsist pending the finalisation of the study on the determination of cost-based pricing for retail broadband and data services in Nigeria.

“In order to provide a level playing field for all operators in the industry, small operators and new entrants to acquire market share and operate profitably, small operators and new entrants are hereby exempted from the price floor for data services.”

It added, “For the avoidance of doubt a small operator is one that has less than 7.5 per cent market share and a new entrant is an operator that has operated less than three years in the market.

“All operators are to ensure that subscribers are not automatically migrated to pay-as-you-go platform.

“Also, note that effective date for the interim price floor is December 1, 2016.”

Reacting to the development, the President, National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers, Mr. Adeolu Ogunbanjo, said that the NCC representative was being economical with the truth.

He said that for MTN to have sent out millions of text messages to its subscribers “clearly shows that the NCC indeed issued the directive.”

Ogunbanjo, however, said that the association would resist the tariff hike, adding,

“We will challenge it in court. We are going right away to set the machinery in motion. We are also going to do an urgent letter to the NCC Executive Vice Chairman, Prof. Umar Danbatta, which we will drop in his e-mail box.

“Unfortunately, the notice is short; yet the order will take effect from December 1. It is not just good for broadband penetration, whatever the reason may be. It is against telecoms subscribers.”

According to him, data availability means more youth engagement because they use data to develop apps and build software.

“But with what the NCC has done, these boys who develop apps will be slowed down and limited. The cost of doing business will also increase,” he added.

Catholic Priest and Spiritual Director of Adoration Ministry, Emene, Revd Fr. Ejike Mbaka has called for prayers for President Muhammadu Buhari and has absolved him of blame in the country’s economic challenges.

Fr. Mbaka, however, reassured Nigerians that the current economic condition in the country will soon be over.

In a sermon to mark the opening of the 2016/2017 Legal Year, organized by Enugu State Judiciary, Mbaka who prophesied Buhari’s victory in the 2015 presidential election recalled that, in 2012, he prophesied that doom time would follow the oil boom, if there was no good planning of the country’s resources.

“But, the past administration was one of ‘LOOT AS MUCH AS YOU CAN.’ Look at a place like the Niger Delta and one of them became president and did nothing for his people and now, you want Buhari to perform magic. But, we are a mono economy and every country depending on oil is suffering the same fate with Nigeria today.

“Buhari is not the cause of hunger in the country; not the cause of starvation in Nigeria.

“The tap root of Nigeria’s economy has been cut; Buhari is just trying to hold a rolling vehicle; a vehicle that the brakes have been destroyed.

“So, Buhari is not the cause. If (former President Goodluck) Jonathan was the president today, the situation would have been worse.[/color]

“Economic recession will not last long; the solution will come in a super natural way.

“Just like Ebola, we thought everybody would die; where is it now? Recession will go as Ebola has gone.

So, all we have to do is to pray for Buhari; he has good agenda but, many around him are planning to pull him down.”

On the recent arrest of judges by the Department of State Services (DSS), Mbaka said Nigerians are beginning to lose hope in the Judiciary,

“but with Buhari’s revolutionary experience going on, I am not saying that all who are accused are guilty but, I am saying that judges ought to remain incorruptible.

“If they are corrupt, they should be arrested and whoever arrests them should be praised.

“So, if president Buhari has that courage, that lion heart, to touch the tiger’s tail, he is a hero.”

Mbaka lauded the performance of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State and described it as “an exemplary display of visionary leadership which has enthroned peace, uniting diverse political interests.”

He called on the people of the state to continue to support his government which he said has been anointed by God.

“It was 4:30 am last Saturday and I was still battling from the stress of the week, slept like someone who trekked from V.I to Aguda Surulere all through Monday to Friday.

I was still enjoying my dream of an imaginary girlfriend preparing a seemingly spicy ‘Ogbono’ soup for me when a loud knock on my door jolted me out of the beautiful dream.

Who? I asked still rubbing the sleep out of my eyes and struggling with visibility in the darkness.

Femi, Na me! I recognised the voice immediately; Frank’s.

I yawned as I sauntered to open the front door. There he was, laughing heartily in the darkness.

You dey fear? Na me nah! He said jokingly.

I just looked at him again, not seeing clearly obviously, still battling the sleep and grogginess.

Beside him was a thick girl, I did not bother to check out who she was as I only wanted to open the door and get back to sleep!

What was going through my head was, Where is Frank coming from with his girlfriend early in the morning. My thoughts quickly filtered off when I found the answer to my question by myself!

They may have probably gone clubbing at Adeniran Ogunsanya and they could not make it home.

The other room was free, so I allowed them in, to sleep till the morning when they leave, I went back to my room hoping to continue my dream.

I woke again at 9 am to find Frank in the bathroom, having his bath!

He greeted me and I replied, and I went back to TV to keep up with the latest on Sports Blitz.

15 minutes later, Frank all dressed up, told me he wanted to buy stuffs down the street that he would soon be back!

Oh! Boy, make I quickly arrange something down the road, I go quick come back now!

I responded by saying I have a bridal shower shoot by 12pm, and he should return on time so that I can lock the house and leave for the job.

He said No wahala!

1 hour turned to 2 hours, I waited for Frank to return from where he went. Called his line only to find it switched off.

I was already running late, and I needed to be out of the house, Frank’s number was not going through as well.

I thought and thought, and guess what I did!!!!

I knocked on the door of the room and the babe told me to enter. Hmmmn… See No evil- Hear no evil.

I entered the room quietly and the first thing that hit me was the strange face of the girl lying on the bed. She was very hairy and had all sorts of tattoo on her right arm.

Hello Madam,

Can you see how you can call Frank? I need to be out of this house in 20 minutes and I need him here. Do you know his house? Can you get there?

I spoke in a hurry!

I don’t know his house oh! She responded and she continued:

His phone is even here, charging. He hasn’t even paid me my money!

I was bemused! Frank’s phone was obviously in the room switched off

What money? T-fare? I replied

T-fare?, Money for job done nah. He sha slept with me all through the night and him come commot this morning without dropping my bar for me.

This is not his house or did he tell you he was living here? Biko, I need to be out of this house in 15 minutes! Can you try to find him or something?

Bros! I am not leaving here oh! He needs to get back on time to pay me! She was already raising her voice!

Oh Lord, I am in trouble, I said to myself!

Biko, sha get dressed first, I need to be out of this house, like right now!

I told her again!

She now responded authoritatively.

Oga Calm down, I dey come!

She stood from the bed, walked past me Unclad into the bathroom to have her bath, while I waited.

After she was done bathing, she walked past me in the sitting room with water drooping from her Unclad body.

I asked myself:

What is this babe trying to do? Seduce me? A prostitute? LOL! I was perplexed and angry at the same time. She is just being a prostitute. She needs to be out of here!

10 minutes later, she was all dressed up and thankfully ready to leave!

On her right hand was Frank’s phone, and she told me

Oga, I am leaving!

I asked her, is this not Frank’s phone?

She said Yes! I am taking it with me, tell him to find me where he **picked** me from yesterday.

Picked?

I did not kuku argue!

Don’t worry, he will meet you where he picked you!

……………….That was how I scaled through oh! Imagine if she had raised her voice at me, told me I was the one who slept with her! I would not have been able to deal with it: The embarrassment, insults, arguments!

Men, I heaved a sigh of relief when I finally left the house for my shoot!

As for Frank, I told him I never wanted to see him again, if I do?! Someone will get injured. I was that mad!

Plane Carrying Brazilian Team Crashes In Colombia, Many Feared Dead. (Photos)

A plane carrying more than 80 people, 72 passengers and nine crew including members of the Brazilian football team Chapecoense, has crashed in Colombia.

According to Guardian UK, the plane – a British Aerospace 146 short-haul plane pictured above– started its journey in Sao Paulo, Brazil, at 3.35pm in the afternoon local time. It made a stop in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, a bustling economic hub in eastern Bolivia, later that day before setting off for Colombia.

The José Maria Córdova airport statement said that at 10pm, an aeroplane travelling from Santa Cruz declared an emergency because of electrical failures between the municipalities of la Ceja and la
Unión.

At the moment we know that the disaster happened in Cerro Gordo the municipality of La Unión and that there were 72 passengers and nine crew aboard, including the football team Chapocoense Real. There are reported to be six survivors.”

Local media in Colombia reported that the plane was flying as low as 150 feet before the accident.

According to the local news site mioriente.com, La Unión’s fire chief has said that at least 10 people were being tended to at the accident site. A state of emergency has been declared in the area and two Colombian airforce helicopters have begun searching for more survivors.

Lady Bleeds Continuously After Following Rich Man Into A Hotel.

A young lady has had no other choice than to speak out after experiencing the unexpected after having a blind date with a rich man in a hotel.

According to a Facebook post by one Dian Chelsea, the unnamed young lady was allegedly used as rituals after visiting a rich whose name was given as Mr Emeka Augustine Ozulike(pictured) in his hotel room.

The young lady was not left the same way she came to the hotel…as she kept on bleeding even when certified ‘okay’ medically.

“This goes out to young ladies; beware of the kind of company you keep especially that of strange men you know nothing about. In today’s world, many atrocities are being committed and the most painful part of it is that the culprits keep getting away with their numerous crimes.

“I wouldn’t want to base this on the present situation of the country because these acts has been in existence for as long as I can tell.

Here goes the story of sexually abused young girl and possibly, almost used for ritual by one Mr.Emeka Augustine Ozulike popularly known as (Obele), who hails from Akwa Village in Ifitedunu, Dunukofia LGA, Anambra State.

Sources have it that he’s a successful business man with his businesses scattered all about the Main Market, Onitsha.

“The abused girl pleaded for utmost anonymity but summed up courage to share her story which she believes is going to serve as an eye opener for young girls in our society.

It all began when a strange call entered her phone from this man, Who consistently claimed that she gave him her number which was a blatant lie.

She later discovered that someone she regarded as friend actually gave her contact to the man. At first, she was very reluctant to speak to this stranger but the pressure became unbearable that she was left with no option than to tell him off which she did but that didn’t help as well.

“The said Emeka continued saying that his intentions were genuine, that he actually want her for a wife. On hearing this, the girl calmed a little and decided to be a little bit more civil with this criminal.

They eventually established a neutral conversation between themselves but the girl was still very skeptical about this Emeka guy. He suggested to her that it will be okay for them to see each other so that she will be more convinced that he’s real which she agreed to but distance seems to be a barrier at that point in time because they both stayed in different locations.

“One faithful day, an important business had to bring Emeka to the city of residence of this girl; he called her as usual and informed her about his visit. She reluctantly went to the hotel where he lodged to see him, on getting there; they met at the hotel restaurant.

They sat for a while and the man suggested they go to his room so the can talk comfortably. She hesitated at first and later obliged. On getting to his room, he offered her a drink (a box juice), unknowingly to her, the juice was drugged.

The last she remembered was taking the drink and possibly waking up naked after several hours of being knocked out by the juice. “She cried and later left in shame because she never planned to give this beast her cookie just yet.

Getting home that evening, she noticed she was bleeding. Being a young girl, she thought it was her monthly flow but the bleeding continued. She tried to reach the bastard on phone, after several missed calls; he neither picked nor returned her calls.

At that point in time, in the midst of the bleeding, it just dawned on her that this man had used and possibly dumped her. “Now her fear is the abnormal bleeding she’s experiencing because after all medical checks and series of tests performed on her, she’s normal with no fracture anywhere inside her system but the blood continues to flow.

She’s very scared and confused having been proven Okay medically. She decided to cry out to the public to help her pass this message across to Emeka Augustine Ozulike ( aka OBELE) to come and undo whatever he did to her while he drugged her in his hotel room.

“Girls please beware of beasts that walk in sheep clothing and try to avoid such a person. They are nothing but RITUALISTS. Even those you think they are your friends are actually back stabbers and devil’s incarnate in human form. Their punishment is still yet unknown because they will never go unpunished.”

Woman flogged 7 times for standing too close to man

A total of five people, including two women and three men, were on Monday, caned outside a mosque in the conservative province of Aceh in Indonesia, which adheres to Sharia law.

A 34-year-old woman (pictured) was flogged with a rattan cane at least seven times for being in close proximity to a man who is not her husband.

The 32-year-old male who was with her was also flogged seven times.

“It hurts so bad,” the woman said, as cited by AFP, raising her arms into the air.

Two university students, both 19, received 100 lashes, after confessing to having sex outside marriage.

A man found guilty of sex outside marriage was also flogged at least 22 times by the person delivering the punishment, who was dressed in long robes and a hood.

His partner, who is two-months pregnant, is still waiting for her fate to be decided.

A jilted bride dumped by her fiancé just days before her dream wedding went ahead with the ceremony anyway – but married her dog instead. Romina Pitton had been due to tie the knot in San Lorenzo, a city in the Santa Fe province of Argentina, before her boyfriend broke things off at the last minute.

According to Daily Mirror, he claimed she had cheated on him but offered no proof of her alleged infidelity, and she suspects he just got cold feet and changed his mind.

But with everything already in place for the wedding , the bride decided not to let the absence of a groom spoil her big day.

Instead she staged a “single wedding” and voiced her commitment to her pet pooch, who she dressed up in a miniature wedding dress.

The celebration took place on Saturday, November 26, at the Hotel Bingas Saurit.

Abuja hospital abandons accident victim for hours over inability to pay N3,500

An accident victim, James Omase, was reportedly refused medical attention for three hours on Saturday by the Kubwa General Hospital, Abuja over his inability to pay a N3, 500 bill, reports Punchng.

Omase, 20, was taken to the hospital around 6pm but the medical personnel refused to attend to him until around 9pm, when his employer showed up and paid the bill. He was riding a motorcycle along Arab Road, Kubwa, when another rider rammed into him, causing him to fall and sustain injuries.

The victim, who worked as a security guard in a residential building, lost two teeth and also sustained an injury on his upper lips, had bruises on his head, right upper arm and on both hands.

Omase said, “I was on the ground in pains and people were passing by, nobody volunteered to take me to the hospital. It was a friend who saw me lying along the road, that took me to the hospital. But when I got there, the nurses said they won’t attend to me until I paid N3,500 for treatment. .

I told them I had N2,500 but they refused to accept it or attend to me. I was lying on a bench in pains for many hours. It was a neighbour, who learnt that I was involved in an accident, that went to inform my employers, who came to the hospital around 9pm and paid the money before I was treated.”

The acting Secretary, FCT Hospital Management Board, Mrs. Alice Odey-Achu, expressed disappointment over the conduct of the nurses, saying their action was unacceptable.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC, on Monday November 28, 2016, docked one Okwara Victory before Justice I.B Gafai of the Federal High Court Awka in Anambra State, for charges bothering on obtaining by false pretense to the tune of $8,674USD.

When the charge was read to the accused, he pleaded not guilty on all counts of the three count charge preferred against him by the EFCC.

In view of his plea, the Defense Counsel Barr. Emma Onyibor applied for the bail of his client adding that his client had been on administrative bail granted him by the EFCC, and had not defaulted but reported regularly to the EFCC whenever he was needed.

But the Prosecuting Counsel Barr. Habila Jonathan informed the court that he was served the motion for bail, shortly before court proceeding and needed time to study and respond.

The court upheld the argument of the EFCC counsel as the Judge was yet to study the bail application which the defense also served the court shortly before proceedings. The court then ordered that the accused be remanded in prison custody, while the case was adjourned to December 6, 2016, for hearing and consideration of bail.

One of the charge against the accused person reads: That you Okwara Victory sometime in the month of April 2016 at Onitsha within Awka Jurisdiction of the Federal High Court of Nigeria, with intent to defraud did obtained the sum of N1,332,420 (one million three hundred and thirty two thousand four and twenty naira) being the naira equivalent of $4,190 (Four Thousand One Hundred and Ninety US Dollars) from one Ekweaba Oyemechi when you falsely represented yourself to him that your girlfriend who lives in America will send you $4,190 (Four Thousand One Hundred Ninety US Dollars ) meant for your return ticket to America, a pretence you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to section1(1)(a) of the Advanced Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act of 2006 and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act.

MMM one of the most popular acronym and biggest scams in the 90’s will never be forgotten by Nigerians in a hurry.

The Ponzi scheme has taken Nigeria by storm with many putting huge sums into the it despite clear warnings from the Central Bank of Nigeria, House of Representatives and a threat from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to desist from it.

According to Wikipedia, МММ was a Russian company that perpetrated one of the world’s largest Ponzi schemes of all time, in the 1990s.

By different estimates from 5 to 40 million people lost up to $10 billion. The exact figures are not known even to the founders. It is also vital to note that 50 investors in MMM committed suicide in 1994 after it crashed.

The police closed the offices of MMM for tax evasion on July 22, 1994. The company tried to continue the scheme but the business shut down.

Below are 7 reasons why neither the federal government, CBN or EFCC can’t do anything about shutting down:

1. Nobody has raised valid allegation against it

Another major reason is the fact that no one has complained yet of losing money or getting swindled by the scheme. Proponents of this theory believe this is probably why security agents are yet to swing into action.

Typically, criminal cases (which this would have fallen into assuming it’s established as a ponzi) are typically investigated after a complaint has been laid by the accuser.

If this holds true, then it will be a while before authorities even touch this scheme.
