Juliana Okoli, a businesswoman, told a Jikoyi Customary Court on Tuesday in Abuja that she was tired of living with her husband because he ‘bed wets’.
The woman made this known when she testified in a divorce petition before the court.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Juliana said, “I am tired of living in the same house with him because he always ‘bed wets’.
“When he wakes up in the middle of the night and is feeling cold because of the urine on the bed, he places my cloths on the urine to protect himself from the cold.”
Juliana also said that her husband was a drunk.
According to her:
“My husband is also a drunk; whenever he drinks, he bed wets even many more times before morning and when I talk to him about it, he starts beating me.
“He sometimes chases me and our children out of the house in the middle of the night. My husband has left all the financial responsibility of the family to me; he does not even know how much the children are paying as school fees.”
She added, “Even the house we are living in, I built it with my money. Whenever he wants to drink and has no money, he would just walk into my shop beat me up, destroy my show glass, take my money and run away.”
The complainant prayed the court to grant the divorce and give her custody of her children.
However, her husband, Okoli, an electrician, denied most of the allegations, but admitted that he urinate on the bed sometimes
He said, “I don’t urinate on the bed all the time, only sometimes. I also give my children money sometimes; just yesterday, I gave them N2,000 for their school fees.”
The President of the court, Labaran Gusau, advised Okoli to settle with his wife, and adjourned report of settlement or hearing in the case till May 16.

Wife of the Governor of Lagos State, Bolanle Ambode, has condemned domestic violence, which of course has continued to rear its ugly head in the state and across the country.
She made the denunciation in Alausa, Ikeja, against the backdrop of Lekan Shonde, who allegedly beat his wife, Ronke, to death at their Egbeda home last week.
Mrs. Ambode lamented that domestic violence in the form of assault on wife, child-battering and other forms of uncivilized behavior against women and children, seemed to have got fresh fancy from some men, who are still living in the primitive times.
She described as totally unacceptable, a situation where a man would callously turn his wife to a punching bag on the flimsy excuse that the helpless woman had either insulted him or refused to carry out his orders. In her words:
“How do you explain a situation where the man you married and one who claims to love you, would descend so heavily on you at the slightest provocation. If he is not complaining about delayed dinner, it is another flimsy excuse that is not tenable anywhere. They do it every now and then even to the extent of killing the helpless woman. For how long will this go on?”
The visibly distraught wife of the governor, advised any woman who found herself in an abusive relationship to retrace her steps when possible, so that she could live to tell her own story.
She rejected the common and well-worn excuse of societal stigmatization of women who abandoned unpleasant marriages, retorting that when the woman dies in such a cruel marriage, what then does the society say? According to her,
“Many victims of domestic violence become victims of their own psychological realities. The world of these women is lonely, isolated and filled with fear, with no emotional outlet whatsoever. Sadly, victims wait until it is too late”.
She advised that, we should cease to treat domestic violence as a case of “family affair” and such do not become involved. The fact that our society is patriarchal and values sanctions by culture is not enough reason for this epidemic called Domestic Violence.
Speaking further, she said domestic abuse should be moved from being viewed as a social problem to being viewed as a criminal justice issue. Mrs Ambode commiserated with all victims of domestic violence, including families of those that died, urging any woman going through such troubled marriages to approach the state’s Office of the Public Defender, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Youth & Social Development or the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation for legal assistance at no cost.

The combination of being a big brother and father came with a price that kept me in Delta State University for 9 years as a student.
Apart from the non-negotiable Christian upbringing from my parents, my dad always drilled me, and made me tough. He taught me how to be a strong independent young man. How to carry my siblings along as a leader of purpose. Though it wasn’t an easy journey for me or any of my younger ones, as we all struggled together. But hope was like the sun, which casts the shadows of our burden behind us.
I never stopped dreaming that one day our story would change and take each and everyone of us towards the direction of success. It has been gathered that late Ronke Shonde’s secret lover has apologised to the killer husband after the ugly incident.
According to The Nation, the alleged secret lover begged for forgiveness.
This was revealed by Sholuki, who’s Executive Director, Campaign against Impunity and Domestic Violence who said:
“Even as we were coming to the police command, he has spoken with his mother-in-law to notify her that he has surrendered.”
The woman told him that he has done very well for her family and that though they were pained, they have forgiven him and he should not think of suicide again.
“He also called his wife’s lover and told him he hoped he was happy now that he has destroyed his home. The man begged for forgiveness.
“When information came to us about what has happened, we told him to come out for the law to take its course. We have known him for a long time and he is not a violent person.
“We want justice. We are demanding a medical examination to ascertain what really happened. He is a family man. He cherishes his wife and says very pleasant things about her. All we want is justice. If scientific evidence proofs he killed his wife, then, he should go in for it. But what we do not like is his being condemned even before autopsy result comes out,” said Sholuki.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Police Commissioner Fatai Owoseni had ordered that alleged wife killer, Lekan Shonde be detained at the homicide unit, State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Panti-Yaba.
Lekan was alleged to have beaten his wife, Ronke Shonde to death on Thursday night, after which he ran away, locking their two kids in the house with the deceased’s corpse on the ground. He later turned himself in.

A woman has allegedly been caught after she walked into a shop in Lekki posing to be a customer but ended up stealing another woman’s bag.
According to a post by Stylebyimagine on Instagram, the woman claimed that the devil pushed her to steal the bag. This is what Stylebyimagine wrote on it:
“This lady going by the name ‘Jennifer Ameh Collins” came into our lekki branch today posing as a customer wanting to buy maternity wear, after a few tries she picked a dress and attempted to pay via pos knowing the card was empty.
“Eventually she left the store carrying another customers handbag along with her. Thank God one of our sales girls noticed on time and went after her,brought her back to the shop for questioning but she denied it. Not knowing she had dropped the bag on the floor before following our girl back to the shop. eventually we found the bag and she has been arrested by the ikota police.

Parents could face prison for putting embarrassing photos of their children on Facebook, French authorities have warned.
Mums and dads who overshare pictures of their kids could be embroiled in legal action once their little one grows up.
This is according to the French government, whose infamously strict privacy laws dictate that parents could be slapped with thousands of pounds in fines or jail time for posting intimate snapshots without their children’s permission.
Parents face fines of up to €45,000 if found guilty of breaching their right to privacy when they are young.We all know the mum who posts more than 10 pictures of her baby a day, or the dad who overshares details of his kid’s toilet habits.
But these parents might want to reconsider their approach on social media. Because a professor of education and social research has warned that mums and dads will one day face “backlash” for it.
Professor Nicola Whitton from Manchester Metropolitan University told The Guardian:
“I think we’re going to get a backlash in years to come from young people coming to realise that they’ve had their whole lives, from the day they were born, available to social media.Parents have to work out what’s right for them, but be aware that this is another person, another human being, who may not thank them for it in 15 years to come.

Beleaguered husband, Lekan Shonde – accused of killing his wife in a story that has captivated the nation – yesterday surrendered himself to the police, after insisting that he wouldn’t.
Lekan has been accused of beating his wife, Ronke to death in a domestic fight in his Egbeda residence.
According to Encomium, the suspect decided to turn himself in because friends pleaded with him to report himself to the police and face the full proceeding of the law in proving his innocence.
The efforts to get Lekan to surrender by his friends was initiated when they reached out to a certain Chris Kehinde Nwandu, a blogger who has stayed on the story.
A delegation met Lekan at a hotel in GRA Ikeja around 11:30 am before they subsequently went on to meet the commander of the Rapid Reponse Squad, Tunji Disu who in turn took them to the office of the Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni.
The Commissioner referred the case to the homicide section in Panti police station, Yaba.

Yesterday, Lekan Shonde who was alleged to have beaten wife, Ronke to death on Thursday night and fled, turned himself in. However, his close friends claim he did not kill his wife, Ronke.
Since leaving home, the suspect was said to have move from Cotonou, Benin Republic to Badagry and Ondo State.
The Nation reports that he was convinced to come back to Lagos from Ondo State on Sunday night. According to a police source, Shonde, who is from Ogun State, eventually listened to the advice of his friends and relatives and returned to Lagos, but stayed in a hotel at Ikeja GRA.
It was gathered that undercover detectives from RRS were already in the hotel before his friends took him to Disu’s office at about 1pm.
Shonde, it was gathered wept, claiming that he did not kill his wife.
Although the police shielded Shonde from reporters, his friends, Sunday Nwobi and Gbenga Sholuki, who claimed to have known him for over 30 years, said he is not violent.
They claimed that he loved his wife so much that he allowed her to keep the family’s account.
“At the moment he has nothing because even the money he makes was kept in an account the wife has access to. Even the ATM card is with her. Everything was under her. That’s how much he loved her,” they claimed.
According to Nwobi, the suspect’s friend for 33 years, they both attended Ikeja High School, but he was a class ahead of Shonde.
“He has never been violent. I have known him for the past 33 years and I can tell you that he is a gentleman. He was in the same class with my immediate younger brother who has just returned from the United States because of this matter.
“He attended Ikeja High School. I have been in touch with him since the ugly incident and he sent me over 70 messages threatening to commit suicide.
“He told me he had quarrelled with his wife on alleged infidelity. He said his wife confessed she has a man friend in her work place.
“Lekan told me that he caught his wife talking to the man on phone and that she went to Abuja with her lover and they spent five days together.
“As the wife was confessing and begging him, he said he pushed her aside and went into the room to sleep. That he didn’t talk to her nor touch her because he was angry.
“Since he usually left the house early (5am) for work every day and returns around 8pm, he said he left that day as usual and that their eight-year-old son was the one who bolted the door, while he used his own key to lock the gate as usual.
“Lekan told me that he never knew anything has happened to his wife until he was called by his landlady on phone. That his landlady told him his wife had died and that he was a suspect. He said his landlady’s daughter also called him.
“He was on his way to the house but different people called and told him to run because police were in his house and they were looking for him as the suspect. That was why he fled.
“But as soon as he contacted me that same day, I kept telling him to come out. His aged father also told him to turn himself in and allow the law to run its course,” he said.
Some of the text messages the suspect sent to Nwobi on May 7 read:
“I want to die. Please help me, I can’t face the police or cell. They will kill me.”
Other messages sent to Nwobi, including that of May 9, thanked him for being a true friend.
“Morning Senior Sunday, thanks for everything. I want to go to Alausa. You are the only one that advised me not to kill myself. I will respect you till I die,” he said.
Sholuki, Executive Director, Campaign against Impunity and Domestic Violence, said he came out for Shonde because he believes in him.
He said:

“He has turned himself in. I confirm he is in our custody. We will ensure we get to the root of the matter. He shall be interrogated and investigation is ongoing. We cannot say for sure what happened but autopsy report will prove the cause of death,” he said.
