“Religion is number one problem for Nigerians” – Soyinka

Nigerian Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has opined that religion is Nigerians’ number one problem.

According to him, religion is the number one problem hindering Nigerians from being liberated as rational beings.

He made this assertion in a chat with a professor of African Literature, Dr. Louisa Egbunike, while emphasizing that religion has got to be put in its place in order for people to be liberated as rational beings.

In his words,

“All over the place, I find that religion has been cosseted too much. And liberty has been taken by religionists, which would not be considered to other movements which are considered secularists.

“If you put on a garb of a religious leader, you can close up the expressway between Lagos and the rest of the nation, simply because you are having a religious celebration. You are just a fraction of the rest of the nation. And you should be accorded no special privileges. So, until that is done, people will always find something extra by belonging and manifesting, even to an extreme extent, your religious adhesions.

“Religion has become the number one problem for Nigerians. Hope is all very well; but hope itself can become putrid. Especially if it is hope for unearned advantages in society. If religion becomes an excuse for flouting the law, then that religion has got to be tackled head-on.

“If for instance a legislator, later a Governor, can claim the right to be a pedophile and indulge in cross-border child trafficking, celebrating child marriage, consummating that event, which is against the law of a nation, and he says he has a right to do it because his religion permits it; then both he and that religion should just be shown the way to the law courts and treated like other phenomena of society.

“If you can use religion to excuse building a church which collapses on the head of humanity, many of them not from Nigeria, several from South Africa. And then you say it was caused by supernatural forces when you know very well that you flouted the conditions for increasing the floors of your building.

“So this is what has become the daily reality of Nigerians. So religion has got to be put in its place in order for people to be liberated as rational beings, beings of volition, who can tackle the problems of existence in a rational, collective way, rather than by insisting that it is only along one route that society can be transformed.

“Take a religion, practice it at home, collect around you anybody you want for collective celebration or religious seasons, nobody quarrels with that. But when you use religion to subvert the rights of others, to the extent of primordial rights, to kill, not just singling, but collectively, to burn down the places of worship of others; then it is about time we treated religion as a crime against humanity; it’s reached that level in societies like Nigeria.”

“As a man, you are the sacrificial lamb of your wife; she must eat before you eat” – Prophetess Obi (Video)

Controversial Nigerian preacher, Prophetess Patience Obi, has advised men on the responsibility that is expected from them as head of their household.

According to the clergywoman, she stated categorically that a couple of men don’t deserve to have a wife in their homes because of their nonchalant attitude towards the responsibility of caring for a woman.

Giving some examples of good manly responsibilities, the prophetess affirmed that the wife is supposed to have first hand privileges before her husband; like making sure she eats before her husband does, letting her use the car if the household has only one, and so on.

Casting aspersions on great men of God like Pastor Adeboye is unwise and very very dangerous – Doyin Okupe warns Femi Falana

Former Presidential aide, Doyin Okupe, has warned human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, against casting aspersions on great men of God like the general overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor E. A . Adeboye.

Okupe took to his facebook page to this morning to reveal that he recently read a story online where Falana was quoted as saying Adeboye was building business centers and not churches.

His post reads;

”FEMI FALANA AND THE DRUNKENNESS OF PUBLIC ADVOCACY.

A few days ago I read a news report credited to Femi Falana S.A.N.

He was reported to have said ” Pastor Adeboye, you are building business centres not churches”

I have waited for 72hrs hoping that the highly acclaimed human rights lawyer and public advocate will deny the story. But this never happened.

Femi Falana is a personal friend and i could have taken this up with him privately. But i choose to comment publicly because of the public image of femi Falana who i recognise that he has a large following in the country especially among the youths and the civil society family both in Nigeria and abroad. It is imperative to publicly correct his falsehood lest he mislead many whi believe in him.

I write these comments not because i want to defend pastor Adeboye. I am by far too inconsequential to take up such a role.i know for a fact that those who defend pastor adeboye operate at such a sublime realm that I cannot even comprehend. And there lies the foolishness of falana’s comments.

Pastor Adeboye and the RCCG are obeying the instructions of our Lord Jesus when he charged his disciples to go into every corner on the surface of the earth and preach the gospel.Mark16:15

This the RCCG complies with by spreading the gospel through the planting of churches erroneously referred to as “business centers “all over the world, by femi Falana.

Secondly Christian’s are mandated by the scriptures to give tithes and offerings.

The more members a church has, the more tithes and offerings it will collect and the richer the churches get. Quite frankly also the richer the pastors and heads of the churches also get. Because they are scripturally allowed to partake in the wealth of the churches. 1 cor vs 13.

Those who work in the temple eat from the temple and those who serve at the alter share what is offered at the alter.

Falana can admonish the church as a christian to use a greater portion of their wealth to support the poor and the needy in the society, even the scriptures are full of such admonitions.

Femi Falana should stay in the areas of his core competence and not dabble into religion where obviously he is so uninformed.

Casting aspersions on great men of God like Pastor Adeboye is unwise and very very dangerous.

These great Generals in the Christiandom are certainly not infallible but because of the Lord’s anointing they carry on their heads, even when they go wrong, they can only be judged by God Himself.

I will enjoin my brother and friend the highly respected silk to repent and ask for forgiveness from God for his reckless statement.

May the Lord forgive us all of our numerous sins in Jesus Name.”

Precious whose 6-years marriage to the politician recently hit the rock claimed he denied her access to see her children ever since.

In an emotional video shared on her Instagram page pleading with mothers to lend their voices in her case, the mother of four burst into tears.

According to her, being away from her children for so long is depressing.

“All of this not for who is wrong or who is right this is for my children… I’m just appealing to mothers, to women, to every good person who has a conscience to help me. I’m tired, why do I have to fight so much to see my kids.

“Till court orders are obeyed, till our voices as mothers are heard, till children are no longer used as bullet shield for failures of two adults, till the emotional state of my sons are put into consideration we shall keep speaking up”. She said.
