Popular Nigerian singer, Davido has credited himself and his colleague, Wizkid, with paving the way for the global rise of Afrobeats music.
The ‘Timeless’ crooner made this submission in a recent interview with Brut, sparking a huge controversy among music lovers in Nigeria and overseas.
He stated that he and Wizkid were the pioneer artists that paved the way for the global recognition and popularity of Afrobeat music before other artists he referred to as “new cats” got onboard.
According to Davido, Grammy-award winning singer, Burna Boy, and other new-school artistes including Rema, Fireboy, Asake, and Mayorkun, are beneficiaries of the foundation he and Wizkid laid earlier.
He, however, noted that he is happy that the future of Afrobeat music is in safe hands, owing to the quality music being churned out by the ‘new cats’.
“Everybody knows that I was one of the first, me and Wizkid to blow up. It feels good also seeing that the news cats coming up; like Burna Boy, Rema, Fireboy, Rema, Asake, and Mayorkun,” he said.
