Father of seven accused

A father of seven, Azeez Balogun, has been arrested for allegedly beating his wife, Tawa, to death in the Itire area of Ajangbadi, Lagos State.

The deceased was said to be his second wife and they have three children together while his first wife bore four children for him.

According to neighbors of the couple, Balogun physically assaults Tawa at the slightest provocation and this has been going on for years so it was considered to be a normal occurrence.

On the tragic day of the incident on Monday, May 31, Balogun was said to have beaten his wife mercilessly and she was heard crying out for help from people around.

She reportedly collapsed from the beating and passed away, after which Balogun ran away from their house in Lagos to Ogun state where he turned himself into the police.

The spokesperson of the Ogun state police command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, who confirmed the incident, said the suspect denied beating his wife to death and claimed to have knocked her down with his car.

His words,

“According to the testimony of the husband of the victim, he mistakenly knocked down the wife with his car when she helped him to open the gate while he was driving out of the compound.

We have yet to ascertain if the suspect lost control or mistakenly hit the wife as a result of brake failure or had other ulterior motives, but investigation is still ongoing to uncover the true cause of the incident that led to the death of his wife.”
