Nigerian-American economist, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been appointed as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

The international development expert has broken two records as she emerges the first woman and first African to take on the leadership rein of the WTO.

The international body took to their official Twitter page to share the latest update. The former Minister of Finance will resume her new appointment in March, 2021.

“BREAKING: Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala from Nigeria is appointed as the next WTO Director-General.
Dr. Okonjo-Iweala makes history as the first woman and the first African to lead the WTO.
Her term starts on the 1st of March 2021.
