Yahoo-yahoo is responsible for low rate of cultism, robberies in Nigeria – BBNaija graduate, Seyi Awolowo

Big brother Naija 2019 housemate, Seyi Awolowo, has credited the presence of cyber fraud in Nigeria for the low rate of crimes like cultism, robbery, and kidnapping in the country.

Seyi made the controversial statement during a recent chat with GoldMyneTV.

In his words ;

“I don’t stand for the yahoo-yahoo thing. But do you know that yahoo is the reason we don’t have really high amount of cultism?”

“And this is just my perspective ‘cause when I was in university, I was always harassed by cultists. But then the next thing, there was a flow of yahoo and they all just disappeared.

“People that used to slap and want to obtain would now rather give. It is something bad, so overtime we abused it.

“Leaders who are supposed to make us see bad in it are doing worse things, stealing more money, and getting away with it. So yahoo boys are like, ‘if he can steal and get away, why can’t I? And I’m not even stealing from Nigeria’.”

ncdc warns

According to him, the curfew imposed in different states in a bid to curb the looting of warehouses and destruction of property have slowed down COVID-19 testing.

During a media briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 in Abuja on Monday, October 26, Ihekweazu said the nation must be careful of the expected increase in COVID-19 cases, as a result of the nationwide protests.

In his words:

“Forty to 60 per cent of our testing cases are reported from Lagos. Our labs in Lagos have not been able to perform as they normally would for the past two to three weeks.

“As we move into the next two weeks, it will not take a rocket scientist to know that we have to watch the numbers very carefully.

“The reasons are obvious; we have gathered in our masses for whatever reason and for now, we have to keep our eyes open for the potential consequences. Those consequences are not inevitable; we can still do our part to prevent them.”

ICPC to investigate hoarded COVID19 palliatives discovered in different states

The Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has revealed that the commission will investigate the storage of COVID-19 palliatives meant for distribution in warehouses across the country.

In a statement released by ICPC on Monday, October 27th the commission stated it will investigate the sources of goods looted from palliatives warehouses, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and private houses to unravel whether or not the properties looted were personally acquired, government procured, CACOVID donated, or are empowerment materials which are part of the constituency projects initiative of the Federal Government.

The statement reads,

“In the aftermath of the looting spree that ensued as a result of the protests across the country, the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) is set to commence the investigation of the sources of looted items.

“This is in response to increasing public demands on the Commission to investigate and uncover the rationale behind the storage of palliative materials meant for the suffering masses in warehouses across the country which were supposed to be distributed to the people.

“It should be recalled that in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Commission had earlier in the year taken proactive measures to prevent corruption in the administration of the COVID-19 funds by setting up a monitoring team that was charged with the responsibility of preventing possible abuse.

“In addition to the above, the Commission drew up “Guidelines for PTF Management of COVID-19 Relief Funds” and issued an advisory on the management of the COVID-19 relief funds. The scope of the monitoring activities of ICPC did not cover CACOVID funds which were donated by individuals and private sector organizations as palliatives, but only the Federal Government funds used to procure relief materials and other palliatives.

“In view of the recent looting spree, ICPC will investigate the sources of goods looted from palliatives warehouses, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and private houses to unravel whether or not the properties looted were personally acquired, government procured, CACOVID donated, or are empowerment materials which are part of the constituency projects initiative of the Federal Government.

“ICPC will also scale up the monitoring of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) charged with the acquisition and distribution of COVID-19 palliative relief materials and make public its findings in due course.”

The Federal government in collaboration with The Coalition Against COVID-19 (CACOVID) donated the relief items to the states.

In a related news, CACOVID has finally broken silence on the looting of Coronavirus palliatives from warehouses in different states in Nigeria.

The Coalition, in a statement released by its spokesperson, Mr. Osita Nwanisobi, stated that the looted palliatives were waiting for distribution.

The statement in part reads,

It is very unfortunate that various States, including States that have concluded the distribution of their allocations, are seeing their warehouses and other premises being raided. It must also be noted that not every warehouse in Nigeria that contains palliatives is affliated with the CACOVID donation, given that the States themselves, the Federal Government and other organisations have also made donations.

“In light of these unsavoury developments, we would like to appeal for calm, and for States to be allowed to proceed with their palliatives distribution peacefully, even as each State will undoubtedly keep its citizens abreast of the distribution process to ensure transparency, accountability, and equity. We urge all to be law-abiding, to be our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers, and to end the raiding of these warehouses.
