Nigerian Coronavirus Survivor, Osowobi Opens Up On How Fear Of Death Ran Wild In Her Mind Before Her Recovery

Nigerian Coronavirus Survivor

Coronavirus Survivor, Oluwaseun Osowobi, has shared her experience after spending 2 weeks in isolation for testing positive for the disease.

The Executive Director of Stand to End Rape Initiative, is one of the survivors of COVID-19. Osowobi, who stayed in a Lagos State isolation centre for two weeks before testing negative, talks about how she came down with the virus, her stay in the isolation ward, her experience with medics and others with SIMON UTEBOR

You are a survivor of the deadly COVID-19, how did you come down with the virus?

I was in the United Kingdom for couple of activities and I must have contracted it during one of the events, during transportation or from someone I was in close contact with. It is very difficult to tell. But I contracted it in the UK; that is how I came down with the virus.

How did you know you had it?

I didn’t know until I got tested. I had to get tested to know that I had it.

What symptoms did you have that made you go for testing?

I had symptoms like fever, cough, dizziness, loss of appetite, and a couple of others. I knew that those were symptoms for COVID-19 but I wasn’t too sure and I needed to get tested to know if I was down with the virus or not, so I went for the testing. I was tested here in Nigeria.

From your experience in isolation centre, what do you think should or can be improved on by the government, medical teams and others involved in the management of patients?

I think one thing that can definitely be improved upon is communication between the management team and patients because we were kept in the dark about our results. Tests were done almost every two days but we were not being carried along regarding the results – if we were getting better or getting worse. People were very anxious to know what their situation was. I think sharing information with the people involved in the situation is itself actually very good because it will encourage them to fight harder and if the situation is not getting better, they can know how to fight or be encouraged to want to fight the virus. I think that is one thing that could be improved upon by the Ministry of Health and the entire health care system. Communication is very helpful, especially for the mental health of the patient at that time. Patients want to know what is going on and that is important.

What was your psychology like when it was confirmed that you were positive?

The first thing that came to mind was: ‘Am I going to die?’ I was scared and worried. I was hopeful, but seriously filled with fear because looking at the data and statistics of those who had died from the virus, it wouldn’t take long to put two and two together and begin to question one’s own capability to pull through the experience. So, I was a bit concerned and worried about if the Ministry of Health was ready and able to handle the situation. I had so many thoughts running through my mind on our readiness to handle such cases – if we were ready to handle such cases or if my case was going to be like that of a guinea pig to carry out a test. I just had a lot going through my mind at that time.

Around the time you were in the isolation centre, a video of a man whose daughter was in an isolation centre in the country went viral. He said she was not being attended to by health workers or even fed. Did you experience selective treatment or suffer stigma in the hands of health workers?

I will not be able to speak about that because I was in a ward and my knowledge of what was going on in other parts was limited. But I can speak for my own ward: we were well fed and taken care of. Were there lapses? Of course, they were, because every system was also learning through its own. So, I won’t be able to speak about the man’s situation because I don’t know the isolation centre his daughter was taken to. I am not aware of the situation because at that time, no one was checking to know what was happening outside one’s ward. For instance, everybody in my ward was just fighting to test negative and beat the virus. So it is difficult for me to say that the treatment was selective because I didn’t experience that and I did not see it in my ward.

What about stigma?

I won’t call it stigmatisation, I will call it unfair treatment because the way I was received did not show care or support and understanding. I felt very bad when I was taken to the isolation centre and how the health care workers received me. I really can’t speak for anyone; I can only speak based on my experience. Some might have experienced stigmatisation, I really can’t tell, but from my own experience, there were times when nurses would come and yell at you, “Wear your mask, wear your mask.”

I understand that they were also trying to protect themselves so that they would not contract the virus. I will not call it stigmatisation; maybe it was not the best approach or the best way to pass their messages across sometimes but I wouldn’t say it was outright stigmatisation.

How did the health workers treat you?

It was good. As I said, there were lapses at the beginning but it was good in the long run. The majority of them cared for me and were supportive, but you know, nobody is perfect. It was good to the best of my knowledge.

Did you experience any kind of unfair treatment that can dissuade people from wanting to go to the isolation centre?

Again, I won’t be able to speak for anyone else, because I wouldn’t know. I will only be able to speak about my own experience and what I saw so that I won’t give an inaccurate account of the situation outside of my knowledge. I wouldn’t say their attitude would dissuade anyone because at the end of the day, your health is the most important thing. The attitude of the health care workers may not be the best in someone’s judgment book but the important thing is for people to come forward to get help. That is the most important thing right now; the attitude of the health care workers is quite different from helping people who come forward. But I think the conversation should actually be for people to come forward regardless of the situation.

How long did you stay at the isolation centre before you were given a clean bill of health?

I was there for two weeks.

Did the doctors appear well trained to handle COVID-19?

I am not a doctor so I do not think I can answer the question of whether they are well trained to handle the situation. I don’t know what a doctor that is well trained to handle COVID-19 should look like. It is a bit difficult to answer that. But for my situation, I have no doubt that they are well trained because through them, I got well and healed.

There are conspiracy theorists who say COVID-19 has created the fear needed for everyone to accept vaccines that will be encoded to fulfil the coming of the Antichrist as predicted in the Book of Revelations in the Bible, what do you think about that?

I have no comment. I just know that we have a virus that is killing people, causing so much damage and we all need to come together to stop it.

Some people also say coronavirus is a scam, while some others say the symptoms associated with it are caused by 5G technology and not the coronavirus, what do you think about that?

Well, I am not familiar with (any) 5G technology causing coronavirus, I don’t have data to back that up. I haven’t done any research in that regard and I don’t have any facts regarding that. So, I won’t say anything about that. But for those who say that COVID-19 does not exist, well I had the experience and I have narrated my story.

Given the donations from different organisations and individuals, would you say those materials or funds helped in facilitating your treatment in any way?

I was isolated so I didn’t have as much information as I should or would have intended to have. All I can say is that the Lagos State Government helped me and others in my ward to survive by giving us adequate care and services. It may not have been perfect as I said earlier but it was enough to help us get better. That is what I can say in that regard.

Did they collect money from you for treatment?

They did not collect a dime from me. It was absolutely free.

‘Coronavirus Pandemic Period Is A Blessing’ – BBNaija’s Ceec Reveals Why She Loves The Outbreak

Reality TV star star Naija, Cee-C, has revealed why she loves the coronavirus pandemic period, which according to her, is a blessing.

The first runner-up at the third edition of Big Brother, stated this recently in an Instagram live session with record label boss, Ubi Franklin.

She said, “I like this coronavirus period. Though there has been a lot of crisis, it has given me time to spend on myself. A lot of people can’t even look at themselves in the mirror; they don’t like who they have become. This is the time for everybody to look within and ask themselves important questions such as — ‘Who am I becoming’? This is a time for everybody to try to level up. It’s a time to become better. It is a curse on one hand because people are dying, but it’s also a blessing on the other hand.

Cee-C, who is a lawyer, also revealed why she dumped law to pursue her passion in the entertainment industry.

She added, “When I went for Big Brother Naija, I wasn’t so sure of what I wanted to do in the entertainment industry. But being in the house, it became clearer by the day. While in the house, I made up my mind that I wasn’t going to practise law that rather, I would find my niche in the entertainment industry.”

On how she has been able to maintain her focus despite being a celebrity, Nwadiora said, “It is very easy for people in my position to want the fanciful life, glamour and adventure. It is very easy for me to do that. But I try to remain focused because if I want to achieve my goals, I need to make certain sacrifices.”

Cee-C also noted that her fans started loving her from the Big Brother house when she was still a mess.

“I haven’t figured out how to reward my fans. Every day, I think about this people. They didn’t just start loving me now. They started loving me right from the Big Brother house when I was still a mess. I think about them every day and I’m still yet to figure out what exactly I want to do for them because most times, they are not doing what they do because of what they stand to gain from me; they do it because they genuinely love and support me. Right now, I am trying to always give them reasons to be proud of me. I’m doing my best to make them proud,” she said.

“I’m a pastor and I’m saddened by this”- Bishop Feb Idahosa blast Rivers State government for suspending the lockdown order for Easter celebration

Popular Nigerian Cleric, Bishop Feb Idahosa has frowned at the Rivers State government decision to relax the lockdown order so residents can partake in Easter festivities.

Idahosa said relaxing the lockdown order for Easter will render the sit-at-home done so far ineffective.

In his words ;

“The Gov of #RiversState has allowed all churches & mosques there to meet in full force this wkend. If there was a Kingdom of Bad Ideas, this one would be king. The only worse idea is for you to attend one of these services knowing what you know about #covid_19. Yes, I’m a Pastor.

“Is it that we don’t know how to learn from #history or know how to learn from science? History is being created right in front of our eyes in the daily news as we watch the trends of #COVID?19 in other countries & yet, this Governor is insisting we make the same mistakes. Why?

“One way #COVID?19 is spread is when people gather in large numbers in one place. An infected but asymptomatic person can quickly spread the virus to others & they in turn will do the same. Not knowing & making mistakes is one thing; but knowingly making mistakes is ignorance.”

Why I believe coronavirus has been in Nigeria since 2019 – Nigerian Medical Doctor, Urchilla writes.

Coronavirus

A Nigerian Medical Doctor has taken to his twitter page to write on why he believes the novel coronavirus made its way into Nigeria since December, 2019.

The Doctor opined that he handled a lot of patience with bizzare respiratory isues which culminated in himself having his own respiratory issue. He added that the illness disappeared after two weeks.

Read his tweets below ;

I honestly believe covid19 has been with us in Nigeria since December. It’s only natural considering the amount of steady traffic between China & Nigeria. Add to this the fact that I had to handle a lot of patients around mid/late January with bizarre respiratory issues,

Culminating in myself having my own severe respiratory issue from same mid January that disappeared after 2 weeks. Started with a sore throat, then a fever, then severe dry cough that lasted about 10 days before it started to get better. The after effects still leaves me with

Occasional chest muscle spasms & possible costochondritis.
I’ve mulled over this in my mind alone until I had a discussion with a cardiologist some day & he said things that mirrored my thoughts exactly without me having said anything first. Also said he had severe respiratory issues around the same time himself to the point he was scared he had T.B; plus also confirmed he handled numerous of such cases around the same time.

I listened to an interview from the head of NCDC where he said the cases in Nigeria are majorly mild to moderate symptoms and this leads me to strongly believe that the insults our immune systems have had to withstand over time may just be playing a positive role for us in all of this.

only wish there were enough test kits available to randomly test people who categorically had these symptoms around these times & presented at clinics; maybe it’d help shed a bit more light on how long we’ve been dealing with this.

Man arrested for stealing the placenta of his neighbor’s child

Officers of the Ogun state police command have arrested a one Joshua Abraham, 43, for stealing the placenta of his neighbour’s newly born baby boy.

The statement read ;

Mrs. Zakara visited the Ibafo police station where she reported that the suspect who is her neighbor had gone to the hospital where the baby was delivered, and claimed to be the father.

“On getting the placenta, he took it away on the pretext that he was going to bury it. But when the grandmother got to the hospital and was informed that the suspect had taken away the placenta, she quickly confronted him, but he told the grandmother that he had buried the placenta.

When the grandmother insisted that she should be taken to where he buried it, it was discovered that he had hidden the placenta but buried a dead rat.”

Upon the report at the police station, the DPO Ibafo division SP Abiodun Ayinde detailed his detectives to the scene where the suspect was arrested.

“It was discovered that the suspect had once been arrested for defrauding a police officer and a pastor of huge sums of money under the pretext of procuring Canadian visas for them and the case is being prosecuted in court. He took detectives to where he hid the placenta and it was recovered.”

So for the State Governments that have suspended isolation & social distancing for Easter… do they have an agreement with the Corona virus that it will also go on Easter break as well? These our “leaders” sha. Kai.”

Let’s imbibe Christ’s sacrificial spirit to overcome COVID-19 – President Buhari urges Christians as they celebrate Easter

President Buhari

President Buhari has asked Christians to imbibe the Christ-like quality of personal sacrifice for the sake of achieving greater good.

Buhari made the call in his Easter message to Nigerians, encouraging all citizens persevere through the hardship and unusual unpleasantness coming with the measures instated to cut down the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19), in the country.

Read the message below

I rejoice with our Christian brothers and sisters as well as all Nigerians on the occasion of the celebration of this year’s Easter.
This year’s commemoration of Easter comes amid the grip with which Covid-19 has held the entire world.

Unprecedented in living memory, majority of Christians have found themselves marking Easter in a subdued manner, away from the usual congregation in churches. This is unusual and very unfortunate.

However, I wish to enjoin our Christian compatriots to rekindle their faith in Christ who overcame persecution, sufferings and displayed endurance, steadfastness and above all piety.

Jesus Christ represented man’s ability to withstand temporary pains in the hope of everlasting glory.

I urge you to imbibe and live the values of humility, discipline, perseverance, sacrifice and obedience which Jesus Christ demonstrated during His stay on earth.

There is no better opportunity than now for all Christians in particular, and Nigerians in general, to remain faithful and hopeful that with intensified prayers backed by personal and collective responsibility, the nation shall pull through this most difficult trial.

I have no doubt that if all stakeholders – individuals and groups – play their part to the fullest as advised by our scientists and medical experts in confronting Covid-19, the inherent resilience and determination of our people will enable us to pull through.

As I stated in my national broadcast on Sunday, March 29, 2020, since there is currently no known vaccine against the virus, “the best and most efficient way to avoid getting infected is through regular hygiene and sanitary practices as well as social distancing.”

May I use this opportunity to commend the encouraging containment and ameliorating strategies put in place by members of the Presidential Task Force on Covid-19.

I am very much aware of the personal and collective inconveniences suffered by our people due to measures such as restriction of movements and closure of business premises. Being “a matter of life and death,” these sacrifices are in everybody’s interest to save our country from calamity.

The welfare of our people is paramount. Accordingly, the most economically vulnerable in our communities will continue to be uppermost in our plans, and efforts will be made to supply them with basic means of survival.

While we see the Covid-19 pandemic as a global challenge, this administration is not oblivious of the constant threat posed to our national security by terrorists and insurgents. They may take this opportunity to perpetrate attacks. But our armed forces and other security and intelligence services will remain vigilant and continue to contain these threats and consolidate efforts to eradicate them completely.

As we mark this year’s Easter, whatever the circumstances, I encourage you to make the most of the situation, and to keep safe.

I wish you all a Happy Easter.

I never knew Nigeria’s healthcare infrastructure was in such bad state – Boss Mustapha (Video)

Boss Mustapha

Secretary to the government of the federation, Boss Mustapha, revealed that he never knew Nigeria’s healthcare infrastructure was in such a bad state.

Boss Mustapha, who is also the chairman of the Presidential Taskforce (PTF) on COVID-19, said he realised how bad Nigeria’s healthcare infrastructure was, after he was appointed to head the team. He made this known during a meeting with the leadership of the national assembly on Thursday.

“I can tell you for sure, I never knew that our entire healthcare infrastructure was in the state in which it is. Until I was appointed to do this work,” he said.

He also noted that the pandemic has provided the opportunity to examine the state of the national health care systems which is in dire need of reforms and funding, he said the weaknesses in Nigeria’s health systems became more glaring given the way more established health systems in Europe and America collapsed under pressure.

He however assured that there are plans to lay a legacy foundation for the immediate, medium and long-term development of the health system in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic across the country.

To this end, he said, the taskforce has proposed to utilise the resources being mobilised in a “strategic manner.” This includes:

Direct development and delivery of critical infrastructure to states by donors; direct procurement and delivery of personal protective equipment and other critical equipment by donors; deployment of rapid response teams to states for capacity building and support; and expansion of the testing capacity in the country.

Mr Mustapha added that for transparency and accountability, the taskforce will not be directly involved in the collection and disbursement of the cash donations for COVID-19.

“The Accountant General of the Federation has already published the account details for collection through some commercial banks and also provided the modalities for its utilisation. All the main COVID-19 accounts shall be domiciled in the Central Bank of Nigeria.

“However, all non-cash donations shall be duly received by the PTF, acknowledged, documented and appropriately deployed,” he said

Rihanna’s father has revealed how the singer came through for him after he tested positive for Coronavirus.

Ronald Fenty, 66, who has had a rocky relationship with his daughter said he feared for his life after battling coronavirus.

He disclosed that Rihanna did everything possible to make sure he beat the virus and even had to send a ventilator for him to have on hand at his Caribbean home after she received the news.

Speaking in an interview with The Sun, the 66-year-old Barbados-native said: “My daughter, Robyn, was checking in on me every day. I feared the worst. I thought I was going to die, honestly,” he admitted to the UK publication.

Discussing his symptoms, he said: “I got a fever up inside of my nose. I had a fever across my lips. It was just a lot of fever,” he recalled. It resulted in him being quarantined at an isolation center where he says he was able to make a full recovery just after 14 days.

Ronald then praised his daughter for sending him a ventilator once she learned of the news.

“I have to say, ‘I love you so much, Robyn,’” he added. “She did so much for me. I appreciate everything she has done.”

The 66-year-old who has been declared “virus-free” cautioned “everybody to stay home” as the number of cases continues to spike up.

“This is a serious situation. More serious than people realize. Please stay home,” he warned.
