Singer, Burna Boy was recently featured in the popular GQ Magazine where he spoke about his career, being compared to Fela, and more.
Burna sings primarily in pidgin English and Yoruba and this means that many outside Nigeria don’t always grasp the totality of his art. But Burna told GQ that he has made peace with that.
He said he’d actually prefers the response to his work be rooted in something deeper than streams, sales, and fluctuating chart positions.
“I don’t really have a high regard for numbers, because numbers have no feelings, they have no soul, whereas I do,” he explains. “My ‘numbers’ is the people who have actually felt the feeling that the music is supposed to carry across and in the process received the message.”
When asked about being compared to Fela, Burna says: “I don’t think anybody in their right mind would compare me to Fela.”
He added: “Fela is my inspiration and my childhood hero, so if you think comparing me to Fela is honorable, it’s actually not. It actually makes me feel weird. Fela was Fela, and if it wasn’t for Fela, there probably wouldn’t be any me, so I don’t understand the comparison.”
Burna’s grandfather managed Fela early in the singer’s career and helped form his first band.
When asked if he talks to his grandfather about Fela, he replied: “Every time. Almost every other day.”
Asked about his career and the lessons he’s learned on his journey, Burna said: “Unlike a lot of other people, I’ve had to go through never-ending steps to get here, whereas other people have taken the elevator up.”
He added: “I’ve always been too heavy for that kind of elevator, so I had to take the stairs. Now I know every floor and everything on every floor.”

A 44-year-old tailor, Rebecca Adeniyi, has asked an Igando Customary Court in Lagos, to dissolve her 15 year old marriage on grounds that she caught her Islamic cleric hubby, Yusuf Adeniyi, having sex with a married woman.
At the hearing of her petition on Wednesday March 4th, Rebecca said her hubby with whom she had four children, built a mosque and started sleeping with his female members both single and married.
“I caught him having sexual intercourse with one of our members’ wives. I grabbed the woman and tore her clothes. I raised alarm; he started begging me not to expose the woman because her husband may divorce her.
“Members stopped coming to our mosque because of his atrocities and he is now accusing me of chasing members away. My husband’s behaviour towards me changed after the incident. He no longer gives me money nor care for me.”
The aggrieved wife told the court that she believes she was under a spell throughout their marriage.
“I was under the influence of charm throughout my marriage with Yusuf but the wool was later lifted off my eyes five years ago. I decided to remain in the marriage because of my children,” the petitioner said.
When the charges were read to him, the 47-year-old cleric admitted sleeping with his mosque member but blamed it on the devil. He denied being fetish.
“Yes, I made love with my member but it was the devil that pushed me. I begged my wife to forgive me and that it would never repeat itself but she refused and raised the alarm.
It is my wife that is fetish. She frequently visited herbalists and came home with different substances,” he said.
He accused his wife of having an affair with the husband of the married woman he had sex with.
“My wife is now living with the husband of the woman I had sexual intercourse with,” he said.
The Court President, Mr Adeniyi Koledoye, adjourned the case until March 20 for judgement.

Nicki Minaj’s husband Kenneth Petty was reportedly arrested for failing to register as a sex offender in California.
Kenneth Petty was convicted of attempted rape in 1995. He was 16 years old at the time of the crime and served time in prison for the offense.
According to the felony complaint, Petty moved to California in July 2019 but did not register as a sex offender within five working days of moving.
Guidelines from New York State’s Sex Offender Registry indicate that an offender must notify the Division of Criminal Justice Services within 10 days of any change of address. However, Petty didn’t do that when he moved to California.
Petty was reportedly pulled over in Beverly Hills in November 2019, at which point officials became aware that he had not registered as a sex offender in California.
According to TMZ, he was thereafter arrested and released on $20,000 bond. However, the L.A. County D.A. charged him for failing to register as a sex offender initially or after an address change.
But he didn’t follow up on that arrest, which is reportedly the reason he was arrested on March 4, 2020. TMZ reports that he turned himself in to the Marshals.
On Wednesday, the 41-year-old made his initial court appearance at 2 p.m., which included his bond hearing and arraignment.
Petty pleaded not guilty. He has since been released on a $100,000 bond.
“He is required to submit to electronic monitoring and his travel was restricted to Southern California,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office stated.
Acoording to TMZ, he is also reportedly required to adhere to a curfew, surrender his passport and is restricted from using drugs including marijuana from legal dispensaries in Los Angeles.
Petty will have a status conference on March 23 to determine the next steps in the trial, which will take place on April 28.
