The Nigerian Senate, on Thursday May 23rd, 2019 passed the bill that Yabatech be upgraded to the City University of Technology (Est, etc) Yaba Bill, 2018 for second reading.
Senator Gbenga Ashafa (APC-Lagos) moved the motion at the plenary presided over by Senate President, Bukola Saraki in Abuja. The bill was sought to transform the Yaba College Technology (YabaTech) in Lagos State to the City University of Technology Yaba, NAN reported.
Leading the debate, Ashafa, who represents Lagos east senatorial district, argued that if the bill is considered, it would enhance the capability of the institution to achieve its objectives.
“Nigeria’s steady march towards education for all in the shortest possible time has taken a giant leap with the introduction of this bill.
“I am personally excited by the prospect of transforming this polytechnic to a university of technology because it will motivate both students and academic staff. It will also upgrade the facilities and enhance it capability to achieve its objectives.
Similarly, the new university of technology will encourage the advancement of learning and hold out to all persons without distinction of race, creed or political conviction the opportunity of acquiring a higher and liberal education,” he said.
Citing instances, the lawmaker noted that in similar circumstances in the United Kingdom, most of the polytechnics were upgraded to universities.
”If Nigeria has plan to become one of the world’s leading economies as currently being pursued by government, we must be ready to adjust and position our educational institutions so that its products are geared for the technological challenges inherent in such projections,” he said.
When the motion was put on a voice vote, it was unanimously adopted by the legislators. Saraki, therefore, referred the bill to Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND for further legislative action and report back within a week.
Also, the Senate also passed a Bill for the Establishment of Federal Polytechnic Iwerekun, Ibeju-Lekki Lagos, sponsored by Ashafa for second reading.
Nigerian rapper, Zlatan Ibile has finally opened up about his friend, Naira Marley who currently is in Ikoyi Prison after their arrest by the EFCC.
Zlatan was arrested same day as Naira Marley but was days later, let go on bail but evidences against Naira Marley were overwhelming, which led him to be charged to court.

Controversial Nigerian Instagram vlogger, Oyemykke has waded in on the ongoing Naira Marley vs EFCC saga and according to his post on his Instagram, he’s in support of the singer.
Oyemykke credits Daddy Showkey’s stance on the saga and gives his own opinion. According to him, the singer is being treated unfairly by the EFCC officials.
He says the claims by the EFCC on Naira Marley are laughable given that the lifestyle of the singer doesn’t necessarily commensurate what he’s being arraigned for.

Triple MG music executive, Ubi Franklin has been alleged to be expecting his fourth child with a businesswoman, Sandra Iheuwa – the latter is the one who claims this.
According to Sandra, the 33-year-old music executive has been in a secret relationship with her, a single mum of two for a while.
Sandra says she was actually expecting a set of twins for him but she lost one of them in early March. She also claimed she had been living in Ubi’s house and will be jetting out of the country anytime from now to the US where she is expected to welcome their child.
If Sandra’s claim is true then this will be Ubi’s fourth child. He has a girl, Zaneta from a US-based woman, his second, Jayden is from actress, Lilian Esoro.
His third is from his former worker, a South African lady named Nicola Siyo and now another child with Sandra.
After Ubi was contacted to affirm the claims, he denied he’s responsible.
Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, on Wednesday, thanked head of states, President Muhammadu Buhari for not converting him to Islam and for disappointing those who thought he had an agenda to Islamise the country.
The Minister stated this at the valedictory session of the Federal Executive Council. In Amaechi’s words,

A new video that’s now circulating the internet shows the moment the “Come Closer” singer came in contact with music icon, 2Baba and what transpired in the footage has caused a stir on Twitter.
According to most people, it appears that Wizkid didn’t properly greet the icon after the latter extended a gesture towards him at the event – in the footage, Wizkid is initially seen greeting 2Baba before he then heads on to acknowledge the man of the moment, Patoranking.
Seconds later, 2Baba is then seen extending his hands to shake Wizkid and it seems as though Wizkid neglected the hand shake for about two seconds before he then responded.

Singing sensation, Simi has finally broken her silence over the arrest of rapper, Naira Marley.
The conception of the rapper’s road to jail can easily be traced to his beef with the songstress few weeks back after she condemned internet fraud and anyone supporting it.
Marley at the time, rose in defense of ‘Yahoo Yahoo’ which ultimately led him to record the ‘Am I a Yahoo Boy‘ song before days later, he got arrested.
Last night, Simi gave her followers the chance to ask her questions on Instagram and a particular user asked if she is happy with Naira’s current predicament and she replied with an affirmative “no.”

Tonto Dikeh made the news headlines yet again yesterday after she announced she’d gotten into a new relationship and then proceeded to call out most of her colleagues in the entertainment industry to desist contacting her new man.

A suspected Malaysian fraudster, Tan Ah Chai Richard, has been arrested and arraigned alongside his company, Coastal Asia Investments Limited in Lagos
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, arraigned Tan Ah Chai Richard alongside his company, Coastal Asia Investments Limited, before Justice Mojisola Dada of the Special Offences Court sitting in lkeja, Lagos on a five-count charge bordering on forgery, use of false document, conspiracy to forge and an attempt to obtain money by false pretence to the tune of €250,000,000.00.
One of the counts reads: “That you, Tan Ah Chai Richard, Coastal Asia Investments Limited and Dr. Sawang Jana (still at large), on or about the 27th September, 2018 at Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, with intent to defraud, conspired to commit felony to wit: forgery of Swift Telex Advice dated 27th September, 2018, indicating transfer of the sum of €250,000,000 to Coastal Asia Investments Limited account with Polaris Bank Plc (formerly Skye Bank Plc) from HSBC Bank Plc, London, United Kingdom.”
Another count reads: “That you, Tan Ah Chai Richard, Coastal Asia Investments Limited and Dr. Sawang Jana (still at large), on or about the 27th September, 2018 at Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, with intent to defraud, fraudulently used a false document to wit: a Swift Telex Advice dated 27th September, 2018, indicating transfer of the sum of €250,000,000.00 to Coastal Asia Investments Limited account with Polaris Bank Plc (formerly Skye Bank Plc), which you purported to be from HSBC Bank, London, United Kingdom by submitting the Swift Telex Advice to Chioma Omamegbe of Polaris Bank Plc (formerly Skye Bank Plc).”
The defendant, a Malaysian, pleaded “not guilty” to the charge preferred against him by the Commission.
In view of his plea, the prosecuting counsel, Bashir M. Kamil, asked for a trial date and also urged the court to remand the defendant in prison.
Counsel to the defendant, A. B. Onifade, told the court that he was served with the charge by the prosecution only on Tuesday, May 21, 2019 and that he would apply for the defendant’s bail after the proceedings.
He, therefore, urged the court to remand the defendant in the EFCC custody pending the determination of the case.
However, Kamil, objected to the prayer of Onifade, stressing that the Commission’s detention facilities were already overstretched.
Consequently, Justice Dada adjourned the case to June 28, July 2 and 8, 2019 for commencement of trial, and ordered that the defendant be remanded in Ikoyi Prison.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on May 22, 2019 arraigned one Abubakar Isiyaku before Justice Sa’adatu Ibrahim of the Federal High Court sitting in Kano, Kano State on a one-count charge of obtaining money by false pretence.
Isiyaku was arrested by EFCC operatives following a petition by the nominal complainant Mohammad Adamu Babandaji, who alleged that sometimes in April 2017, he received a friend request on FaceBook from the defendant who posed as a former class mate whom he went to school with.
Babandaji innocently accepted the friend request thinking that it was his lady friend.
Subsequently, Isiyaku started making financial requests from the complainant up to the point that he asked to borrow N3,260,000 which Babandaji graciously transferred to him via his First Bank account.
Isiyaku claimed that his sister was ill and that he needed some money for treatment. After making the payment, Babandji realised that he had been duped.
The charge reads: “That you, Abubakar Isiyaku, sometimes in March 2017, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court with intent to defraud, misrepresented yourself on Facebook as a female colleague to one Mohammed Babandaji and obtained the sum of ₦3,260,000.00 (Three Million Two Hundred and Sixty Thousand Naira only) from him through the First Bank of Nigeria belonging to Aisha Mohammed under the pretence that you had family health challenges, which pretence you knew to be false, and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 1(1)(a) of Advance Fee Fraud and other Fraud Related Offences Act. 2006 and punishable under section 1(3) of the same Act.”
He pleaded “not guilty” when the charge was read to him.
Prosecuting counsel, Micheal Ojo requested a date for hearing in view of the plea of the defendant.
Defence counsel, T. M. Edema, moved an application for the bail of his client.
Ojo, however, opposed the application in a seven-paragraph counter-affidavit duly deposed to by an operative of the EFCC dated May 21, 2019 praying the court to refuse the application.
After listening to the arguments, Justice Ibrahim, adjourned the case to June 13, 2019 for ruling on bail application and ordered that Isiyaku should be remanded in EFCC custody.

The Management of the University of Uyo, Uniuyo has banned the use of wristwatches by its students during examinations.
A statement released on the 20th of May and signed by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) Prof. Enoidem Usoro, states that students are now prohibited from wearing wristwatches to examination halls; and the ban takes effect from the 1st semester 2018/2019 Examinations.

A Nigerian man who recently got married has advised men to stay away from ladies below the age of 25 when looking for a partner to marry.
In a series of tweets he shared, the man identified as Olaseni said the during the age of 25 is a period such ladies usually know what they want in life.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibadan zonal office on Wednesday, May 22, 2019 secured the conviction of four internet fraudsters.
The convicts are: Olatunji Samod Oladimeji (a.k.a Theresa), Stephen Ayoola Ogunmefun (a.k.a Michael Schwarz), Adekanmbi Abdulazeez and Tella Adefemi Ibrahim.
The anti-graft commission had dragged them before Justices Ibrahim Watilat and Mohammed Abubakar respectively sitting in Federal High Court 1 and 2, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Following the plea bargain arrangements between them and the commission, the four of them were re-arraigned on Wednesday to face a one-count amended charge that replaced the initial charges against them.
They were accused of sending pornographic and indecent pictures, and fraudulent representation. The offences are contrary to Section 22 (2) and punishable under Section 22 (2)(b)(iv) of Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention Etc) Act 2015.
They all pleaded “guilty” to their respective charges.
In view of the plea, the prosecuting lawyers, Murtala Usman and Abdulrasheed Lanre Suleman, urged the court to accept the plea bargain and convict them accordingly.
Justice Watilat pronounced Ogunmefun and Abdulazeez guilty and sentenced each to five months in prison.
While Abdulazeez was ordered to refund $200, Ogunmefun will pay back to his victims sums of €800 (Eight Hundred Euros) and $75. All the payments will be made through the Federal Government of Nigeria as restitution to the victims. They are also to forfeit all the items recovered from them by the commission.
Equally, Justice Abubarkar jailed Tella and Olatunji for two and three months, respectively.
He also gave the order that Tella forfeits a sum of N1 million, a Honda Accord car, one HP Laptop, one IPhone 8 and One Samsung X9 recovered from him.
Besides the jail term, Olatunji is to restitute the total sum of $700 and £50 (Fifty British Pounds) and also forfeit his One Infinix Note 4, one black Dell Laptop and One silver HP Laptop.
All the forfeitures are to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has apprised the general public about roadblocks mounted by unscrupulous elements in search of alleged Yahoo boys.
In a series of tweets, the commission dissociated itself from such activities stating that such is not part of their duty.

For the avoidance of doubt, it is not part of the EFCC’s operational practice to mount roadblocks, neither does it engage any agent(s) to do so on its behalf. EFCC operatives stick to standard procedures, which conform with the global best practices.
The commission also warned against a certain DSP who parades himself as acting on orders of the EFCC acting chairman.
The EFCC also warns the public against antics of one DSP Dorcas Bukola, who claims to be acting on behalf of the EFCC Chair, Ibrahim Magu, and sending out invitation letters via [email protected]; Such letters should be dismissed as they didn’t emanate from the Commission.
