Hackers remotely install surveillance software on phones using a major vulnerability in WhatsApp

Hackers remotely install

Hackers were able to remotely install surveillance software on phones and other devices using a major vulnerability in messaging app WhatsApp.

WhatsApp, which is owned by Facebook, confirms that the attack targeted a “select number” of users and was orchestrated by “an advanced cyber-actor”. WhatsApp has urged all of its 1.5 billion users to update their apps as an added precaution.

The surveillance software involved was developed by Israeli firm NSO Group, according to a report in the Financial Times. Facebook first discovered the flaw in WhatsApp earlier in May.

However, the surveillance software would have let an attacker read the messages on the target’s device. Some users of the app have questioned why the app store notes associated with the latest update are not explicit about the fix.

How was the security flaw used?
It involved attackers using WhatsApp’s voice calling function to ring a target’s device. Even if the call was not picked up, the surveillance software could be installed. According to the FT report, the call would often disappear from the device’s call log.

WhatsApp told the BBC its security team was the first to identify the flaw. It shared that information with human rights groups, selected security vendors and the US Department of Justice earlier this month.

“The attack has all the hallmarks of a private company reportedly that works with governments to deliver spyware that takes over the functions of mobile phone operating systems,” the company said on Monday in a briefing document note for journalists.

Two Nigerians charged with ‘Yahoo Yahoo’ in Singapore

In new reports, two Nigerian men who are said to be members of an internet love scam syndicate, have been charged in Singapore with recruiting local women to collect money for them.

According the police, such scams where victims part with cash after a fraudster feigns romantic interest in them are a growing concern in the city-state with police reporting 660 cases last year.

The Nigerians have been identified in local news reports as Oladayo Opeyemi Awolola, 34, and Gbolahan Ayobami Awolola, 37 – they were apprehended by Malaysian authorities in Kuala Lumpur last month and sent to Singapore on Monday.

The men allegedly recruited two Singaporean women “as money mules to receive criminal proceeds linked to internet love scams in Singapore” between 2017 and 2018, according to a police statement.

The women received Sg$85,700 ($63,000) during that period and turned the money over to syndicate members in Malaysia, police said.

The Nigerians could be jailed for up to five years each and fined if convicted. It is the first time that suspects based overseas are involved in internet love scams have been arrested and sent to Singapore for prosecution, police said.

Most of the internet love scams reported last year in the city-state involved fraudsters claiming to have sent parcels containing luxury items or money.

Their local accomplices would call the “recipients” and claim the parcels were being held by the authorities for inspection, and would only be released if they transferred money to a bank account.

My life is in danger over EFCC’s arrest of Naira Marley, Zlatan Ibile – Ruggedman

Nigerian rapper, Ruggedman, has said he has been receiving threat messages after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) announced that rising artistes, Naira Marley, real name Afeez Fashola and Omoniyi Temidayo Raphael aka Zlatan Ibile, will soon be arraigned.

Others are Tiamiu Abdulrahman Kayode, aka Rahman Jago, Adewunmi Adeyanju Moses and Abubakar Musa.

Tony Orilade, EFCC Head of Media, said the suspects were still in detention.

“They are still with us and expectedly will be arraigned in court this week. No date has been fixed yet but as soon as I confirm, I’ll let you know”, the spokesman said.

However Ruggedman, in a statement said despite the disrespect to his person, he has nothing against Naira Marley and hopes he will be discerning and utilise his position of influence appropriately.

He said:

“I have read and heard all sorts of comments pertaining to the Naira Marley case and seen the misinformation making the rounds which is quite unfortunate to say the least.

I do not know Naira Marley personally, the same way I do not know the over 300 Nigerians I have gotten justice for against police brutality. I do it because it is who I am.

All I did was caution a young artist, who has influence, against making utterances about an issue that by global standard is considered a crime. I believe correcting this was the way to go as an elder, but got insulted for this even by those being misled.

I never responded to Naira Marley’s invective nor those of his fans, same way I have not responded to any of the negative comments from social media.

I note that saying I was “happy in a way” about his arrest has evidently frayed some nerves and for that, I apologise. It was in hope that it would serve as deterrent for persons who might consider the said ills or need to make a u-turn.

It by no means was intended to wish for his downfall. It perhaps was not a good choice of word in hindsight. I do not look forward to anyone’s downfall but rather hope we all learn from the situation.

I hereby state categorically that I had nothing to do with his arrest. We all must recall that he glorified fraud on a public platform where security agencies like the Police, NDLEA and EFCC are also on.

I am sure they saw his posts and captions the same way we all did. I, however, was the one that cautioned him. I guess this was what led all the darts and arrows my way as a literal mortal retribution to my person.”

“Devil is using the movie series Lucifer to win souls” – Joshua Bamiloye says

Joshua Bamiloye, son of Christian movie producer and evangelist, Mike Bamiloye, has criticized the series, Lucifer which he says the devil is using to win souls.

Joshua Bamiloye says

According to Joshua, series are very captivating and Satan has found it as a tool he can smartly use to win hearts to himself.

He tweeted:

There’s a show

Called LUCIFER

Azin the devil o lol

And you,

Knowing how captivating foreign series can be,

You still watch.

Now you LOVE the character; Lucifer,

Like Jack Bauer.

And somehow you think,

the devil isn’t winning your soul over…

He continued,

This tweet really exposes how bad things have gotten. Satan is far more smarter than we think. It’s not just sitting around waiting for rapture to happen. He’s turning as many hearts as he can to himself using MOSTLY the media. It’s the easiest most subtle way for him.

He added,

That being said, this isn’t to scare us, but to remind us to stay vigilant, wise, keeping our hearts and spirit on what glorify God. We are more than conquerors in Christ Jesus.

His post was buttressed by @Sucrexx1 who shared:

Totally agree…. The media is basically the root that stems into other branches of evil… the devil knows that through the eyes, he can capture a persons mind, heart and soul… and therefore what most people see drives their next action.

King of Swaziland orders men to marry more than 2 wives or face Jail

The King of Swaziliand, King Mswati III has made a declaration in the country that starting from June 2019, men will be required to marry at least two or more wives, if not, they’ll face jail.

The king believes taking more wives will help women get husbands. Women are still regarded as sex objects meant only for procreation in many cultures and getting married is the ultimate for social acceptance.

The king, who has 15 wives and 25 children, while his father and predecessor has more than 70 wives and 150+ children, noted that there are more women than men in Swaziland which he says is a very serious problem for a country, which is known to be full of virgins.

According to IHarare, men from Swaziland are therefore required and expected to take more wives so that every woman gets a husband.

In a statement, King Mswati called for all men in the country to marry at least five wives and the government assured the men that it would pay for the marriage ceremonies and buy houses for them.

The country which is known to be full of virgins, is also said to have more women than men.

“Here’s the deal, marry at least five wives and you’re assured that the government will pay for the marriage ceremonies and buy houses for them” a palace source reveals

King Mswati warned that any man or woman who opposes the decision “will face a life sentence”.

Polygamy has caused considerable amount of instability in many homes where it is being practiced. Strife, violence, rejection and poverty and depriving the young ones education have backgrounded its function of communal fraternity.

‘Saving up enough money to exit the country has now become the Nigerian dream’ – Singer, Runtown writes

Singer Runtown writes

Nigerian singer, Runtown, has penned a lengthy note mirroring his thoughts on the evil of police brutality and the experiences of the masses both rich and poor.

In his words, Runtown in an article published on Guardian said  saving up enough money to exit the country has now become the Nigerian dream’.

Read the full piece below…

It’s been over two months since Nigeria’s general elections and the tension that is borne out of vigorous political campaigns and a tussle for power has died down. Depending on who you ask, one vote at a time, the people have determined the fate of every candidate that vied for office and in a couple of weeks, newly-elected leaders will be sworn into office across the 36 states of Nigeria.

Imperative for incoming leaders, both elected and appointed, to note is that there is a hanging duty to deflate the rising tension that stems from police brutality and an urgent need to make Nigeria livable for the youth. As it appears, saving up enough money to exit the country has now become the Nigerian dream. It has been said that the country loses a worrisome number of doctors to the UK, US and Canada every year and what’s worse is that the Nigerian healthcare system is in dire need of doctors.

This harrowing loss of bright thinkers and skilled individuals transcends the medical world. I think about Tanitoluwa Adewunmi, the 10-year-old Nigerian boy who recently became a chess champion in the US after fleeing Nigeria with his parents over terrorist attacks by Boko Haram in the north. What would have been his fate had his parents not sought asylum in the US?

My heart has recently been replete with rumblings as a result of fear. Fear for my safety and perhaps more intense, the fear of losing a loved one to what has now become an unceasing demonstration of negligence by some officers of the Nigerian Police Force.

As a young Nigerian who very well fits the description of what members of the now controversial anti-cultism/robbery unit of the police force, SARS (known for perpetuating this menace) consider a target, I occasionally feel uneasy. I am a player in the country’s entertainment sector and the nature of my job causes me to appear “unconventional”. My hair is sometimes braided and sometimes blown out. Many times, I move around with a laptop, ride in a fancy car and yes, I own an iPhone which according to several victim/witness reports, makes me an instant suspect to the police.

Lucky me, I belong in the class of people who can sometimes afford special security. But it is puzzling that these days, we are pushed to sometimes hire men of the force to serve as security and protection against fellow officers. Some of my colleagues have been victims of police intimidation and I can only imagine the blistering degree of brutal treatment that everyday Nigerians are subject to. On days when I can’t afford special security, what becomes my fate? Do I have to commute by public transport, put away the devices that serve as tools for my everyday dealings or cut my hair in a bid to feel safe?

It is true that the country isn’t free of offenders. Agreeably, Internet-based crime is at an all-time high. But very needful to note is that legitimately conducted internet-based businesses are also at an all-time high. Smartphones and laptops have become indispensable tools. As it is in other parts, young Nigerians are using the internet as a tool to amplify their creativity, access boundless meaningful information, champion game-changing ideas, scale up their start-ups and by extension, create jobs.

Given the reality of today’s digital-driven world, law enforcement agencies must begin to deploy intelligence-driven tactics to carry out just and effective policing. Criminal detection should not be conducted solely based on a person’s appearance. Innocent young Nigerians should not be harassed, brutalized or worse, murdered over unimaginable reasons like owning a fancy smartphone or wearing an exotic hair-do.

I have had series of meditations over the recent killings of innocent young Nigerians like Kolade Johnson and the guiltless young lady, Ada Ifeanyi whose lives were cut short by men of the force to the ludicrous term, “accidental discharge”. A number of peaceful protests have been held and an array of anti-police-brutality campaigns have been launched across social media. Promises to restructure the police force have been made – but our reality suggests that no sort of reformation has taken place.

I manage to tell myself every day that the activities around the recently-concluded general elections is perhaps responsible for swaying the attention of the government because her silence amid the outcry of Nigerians has been very loud. The people are being pushed to the wall and choked against it. There is an urgent need to curb this menace before we find ourselves in an avoidable national catastrophe.

Growing up, we were told that the police is our friend but as the years go by, this promise has become more and more far fetched. Although my spirit is enraged, my message isn’t that of outrage, it is one of faith. This is not an easy call, but I admonish everyone to choose hope because I know that the alternative is one that will leave us all in disarray.

In truth, my faith is shaky, but I look forward to a time when the sight of an armed officer will no longer inspire fear. A time when Nigeria will no longer lose its human assets and forward thinkers to other countries as a result of low pay, lack of infrastructure and general neglect. A time when elected leaders will uphold the integrity and deploy empathy.

Young Nigerian poet takes his own life after leaving suicide note on Facebook

Young Nigerian poet takes

A young Nigerian poet has taken his own life hours after he logged in Facebook to write a suicide post that no one paid attention to.

Chukwuemeka Akachi was suffering depression and spoke about it on a Facebook post hours before he committed he act. Sadly, the post barely got any reaction as people thought he was simply seeking attention.

He wrote on Sunday, May 12: “My mental health has been on life support for a while now. Thanks to those who call. Text. Visit. Speak to me. May we always remember. May we never forget. You may have added a few hours, months or days to my time here. But you know life support is expensive right? Thanks for trying. Amen.”

Then, on Monday, May 13, just before he ended his life, he shared a post titled, “suicide note”.

His suicide note reads: “Suicide Note.
Forgive me. In case you are the one who found the body, I am really sorry. It had to be someone, you know. I have chosen Jo Nketaih’s poem as my suicide note: “They said you came looking for me. I didn’t drown; I was the water.” Where do atheists go to when they die? lol. Amen.”

Nigerians have the right to search policemen – Police Force

The Nigeria Police Force says Nigerians have the right to search its men in select circumstances, a report by Punch has revealed.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, said this in a statement on Monday titled, ‘(Part 2) Tips For Safe And Cordial Conduct During An Arrest.’

The Police said if an officer is about to search a citizen or a property, that citizen has the right to first search the policeman in order to ensure that no evidence is planted.

According to the NPF, Nigerians also have the right to demand to know the reason for their arrest whenever an arrest is about to be made.

The Force spokesman further stated that in some instances, Nigerians have the right to demand that an arrest warrant is presented before allowing themselves to be apprehended.

The statement reads in part, “You may politely request that the officer be searched before searching you. Often times, this helps to allay fears that someone may be trying to plant incriminating items on you or implicate you in any other way.

“Demand to see the warrant of arrest where necessary (note, however, that not all invitation/arrest requires a warrant). As a matter of fact, under our laws, the Police have wide powers to arrest without warrant in many circumstances.

“Politely request that the officers allow you inform a trusted friend or a family member or a lawyer soon after your arrest in order to avoid unnecessary apprehension as to your whereabouts or safety.

“If the arrest requires the officer to conduct a search on you, demand to see the Search Warrant and comply with all legitimate instruction during the search (note that there are a lot of instances where a policeman can search you with or without warrant).”
