Yesterday, the video of a smart little girl bitterly expressing her anger after the management of her school sent her home over her parents inability to promptly pay her school fees, surfaced online.
While many people applauded the girl for her boldness and wittiness in expressing herself as well as her sheer display of determination to get educated, OAP Toke Makinwa, expressed disgust and anger at the manner in which most school authorities chose to humiliate and shame children over their parents inability to pay their fees.
Posting via her IG
I am so sick to my stomach watching this. No child should be put under pressure, no child should be humiliated and made to suffer for wanting a better life. I’ve often wondered why flogging students who can’t pay or chasing them back home or in some cases publishing their names or calling them out on assembly ground is necessary, what point are you trying to prove? Embarrass their parents? Damage their self esteem, make them a laughing stock amongst their peers??? Of what use is this act exactly? Oh you flog or send them home so their parents can feel bad and embarrassed till they find the money right?
What is the child’s offense? Do they have a source of livelihood? Why do they have to suffer? Did they ask to be born?? It has been happening from time in memorial and I think it’s time we spoke against it. Why dehumanize them? Why embarrass them? Why flog them when they clearly can’t work to afford the school fees? Why??! I understand schools need money, I understand that some of these schools are not government owned and need funding to stay open but this is a shame, we must do something about it.
What happened to dialogue with the parents? What happened to working out a payment plan???? This young princess is the leader of tomorrow and her bravery and enthusiasm broke me, that should encourage them to nurture her and not break her down. Even if we find her confidence funny, her self esteem is being bruised by the school authorities who believe they have to flog her cos her parents can’t pay them to teach her. Sad ? ???
Pls let’s join hands in saving the situation, pls anyone who can connect with her family or any school interested in giving her a scholarship, let’s stop this barbaric act it’s disgusting”.

Do you ever sit and wonder why all your hoe friends are married/in a loving relationship right now and you’re not? Well the answer is because she’s a hoe. Be a hoe today. You’re welcome.

A father of one of the children who was killed in the Ohen Nursery and Primary school building collapse, has narrated how his six year old child, Fawad, asked him to pray for him just before going to school that ill-fated morning.
Mr Abdulfatah Ayoola while fighting back tears, told TheCable that his son had finished eating and was on his way out when he unusually asked him to pray for him. He never knew that as he laid his hand on his child’s head to pray for him that it will be the last he will see him.
“He woke up late for school. After taking his breakfast, he requested for money but I told him there’s no need for money since he has his lunch with him. Then he said, ‘daddy, pray for me before I go’, and I did exactly as he requested. He walked to school which is just few metres from the house.
I don’t think I can sleep tonight. My late son and I did almost everything together; we ate together, prayed together, spent time discussing. I was introducing him to life because he was my eldest child,” Ayoola said.
Mr Ayoola broke down in tears, narrating how he contemplated enrolling Fawad in another school but did not go ahead with the plan because his late son was rounding off his primary education.
“I visited Kings’ College not too long and liked the academic atmosphere. and I was assured that an interview date will be communicated to me soon but now I can’t take him there anymore because Fawad is gone. God gives and take, we cannot question Him. All I need to do now is pray for him, console the mother, I know of a family who lost four of their children in the building, what will be their fate? Praise be to Allah for everything.”the distraught father said
Fawad has been buried at the Ikoyi cemetery in accordance with Islamic rites.
More children were rescued from the rubbles of the school building that collapsed at the Itafuji area of Lagos Island in Lagos state on Wednesday.
The state governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, who also paid a visit to the scene of the incident, commiserated with the families of those who lost their lives in this collapsed building.
“The first observation is that this is an old building and it is only the Pent House and the other floors that we have been able to use to rescue people. So far, from what I have been briefed also, we have rescued about 25 people and some already dead but we were earlier informed that it was a school, the building is not technically a school, it is a residential building that was actually accommodating an illegal school.
“All we are trying to do is to continue this operation. Our response unit are already here; we are getting additional cranes to be able to go deeper than where we are now to rescue more lives. I just want to appeal to people that when we are doing this kind of rescue operation, yes sympathizers will naturally come, but I want to appeal that they should give the rescue workers the chance to save more lives.
“Like we have said, we have been carrying out a lot of integrity tests on the buildings in this neighborhood and as you can see some of them have been marked for demolition but we get resistance from landlords but we must continue to save lives and we would intensify our efforts to see that those that have failed our integrity test, we would ensure that they are quickly evacuated and we bring the structures down,” he said.
Ambode said the Deputy Governor was in the hospital to actually take care of those that had been sent to the hospital most especially the children that had been rescued.
“On the part of government, we would immediately take care of whatever it is that we can do, including the hospital bills. All we are interested in now is to save more lives and also see how those that have been rescued are put in proper place and proper care.
“The General Officer Commanding of 81 Division and the Brigade Commander are here to maintain peace and allow us to save more lives. That is what is important to us and the more lives we save, the better for us.
“This is unfortunate, but we will investigate what has happened and also see the punishment for whoever are the culprits. That is the secondary level but the most important thing right now is to save lives and I just appeal to people that they should give us the chance to save more lives.” he said
Lagos state governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, says the school that collapsed in the Ilafaji area of the state yesterday March 13th, was operating illegally.
While visiting the scene of the incident, the governor said the school and shops in the three-storey building, were not authorized and were operating “illegally” in the building, which is meant solely for residential purposes.
The governor added that many of the structures in the area would be demolished as they are not structurally fit.
“The building is not technically a school, it is a residential building that was actually accommodating an illegal school, so to speak, on the second floor,” he said.
A pregnant woman, the proprietor of the nursery/Primary school and 19 others, including no fewer than 12 pupils died in the collapsed building at Massey Street, Itafaji on Lagos Island on Wednesday, witnesses and hospital sources said.
However, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), said eight persons died, while 34 others were rescued in the wreckage of the building that collapsed at about 10 am.
Lagos State Emergency Management Agency did not give the number of the dead, but said it rescued 10 persons out of the wreckage.
The agency said its rescue team and other agencies brought out 10 people alive, made up of three adult females, one adult male, two teenage boys, ine young boy and three teenage girls.
The South-West Zonal Head of Public Affairs of the Agency, Ibrahim Farinloye said the rescue operation was ongoing as at 8 p.m.
NAN gathered that most of the victims were rescued from the rubble on Wednesday, but died at the General Hospital as doctors failed to save them.
NAN learnt that the pregnant woman was one of the persons rescued from the rubble, immediately after the building collapsed, but she died in the hospital.
Other persons reported dead as at 8 p. m. included the proprietress of the school, Ohen Nursery and Primary School, about 12 pupils and some occupants of the building.
NAN gathered that about 10 different families occupied the first and the ground floors, while the school occupied the second and fourth floors.
‘Marked for demolition’
The building at 63 Massey Street, it was learnt had been marked for demolition by officials of the Lagos State Building Control Agency.
However, the occupants of the building frustrated the demolition.
NAN further learnt that 17 of the rescued students and occupants of the building were taken to Massey Children Hospital, very close to the scene, while others were taken to the Lagos Island General Hospital on Broad Street.
A worker at the Massey Children Hospital, who spoke with NAN on condition of anonymity said that four out of those brought in, died few minutes after.
The medical staff said that six of those who were rushed to the Lagos General Hospital also died.
Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, who visited the scene said the government would ensure that the trapped victims were rescued
The school moved to the collapsed building some years ago.
Grief
Distraught parents of pupils and residents of the building jammed the scene of the rescue operation hoping that their children and relatives would come out alive.
Bukola Salami, a former staff teacher in the school who spoke with NAN, said the proprietress of the school had been told to vacate the building but she balked on account that she had no money to rent another apartment.
”It was because of the situation of the building that forced me to resign from the school in December, because I don’t want to risk my life.
“It is unfortunate that such incident happened. It looks like a dream to me,” she said.
A resident of the collapsed building, who simply gave his name as Akin, said that the building was marked for demolition but “the developer found a way to stop the demolition”.
Mr Akin said he had gone to work, when he received the news of the incident. He also stated that the owner did some renovation two years ago.
‘Bomb explosion’
A neighbour, Adewale Owoso, likened the moment the building collapsed to a bomb explosion.
“We were just sitting down in front of the school, when we heard a loud sound .
“We all ran into different directions but after the dust had settled, we realised that it was the building that collapsed.
“We quickly mobilised and began some rescue operation and we had rescued more than twenty people, before the emergency workers arrived,” he said.
Aishat Onilenla said, three of her sister’s three children were trapped in the collapsed building. ‘My friend has seven children also trapped in the rubble,” she said.
“I don’t know how she is going to survive it. It is too big for her to bear,” she said.
The deputy speaker of the State House of Assembly, Wasiu Esinlokun, who visited the scene of the incident, said a notice for demolition was served on the building on Tuesday, a day before the building collapsed.
Mr Esinlokun, while speaking with journalists said that the Lagos State Government would ensure that victims of the incident are treated free.
As at 8.30pm, NAN gathered that some of the parents whose children died in the hospital had gone to pick up the corpses for burial.
