Nigerian man nabbed

A Nigerian man has been nabbed in India after he was caught trafficking 155.5 grams of cocaine within the country.

On Wednesday, July 25, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), arrested the Nigerian man with 155.5 grams of cocaine which was being transported from Mumbai to the city.

The accused identified as Ozy Chukwudu, 30, was intercepted by the NCB sleuths when he disembarked from a sleeper bus from Mumbai to Bengaluru.

With specific information of cocaine smuggling, the NCB team was waiting for his arrival from Mumbai.

Chukwudu, who did not have a passport and other documents, was carrying a polythene bag with 11 capsules which contained cocaine.

The drug was brought to Mumbai by an unidentified man hiding it in his stomach and was later handed over to Chukwudu to be brought to Bengaluru.

According to a press release by the NCB, Bengaluru, the value of the contraband is said to be around Rs 93 lakh in the international market.

“Based on examination, he was arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act,” said Sunil Kumar Sinha, zonal director, NCB, Bengaluru.

He was produced before the court yesterday, Thursday, July 26.

Twitter shares tumbles 17% as monthly users decline

Twitter shares tumbles

Twitter shares tumbled by 17% after a drop in their monthly users was announced.

The company’s stock declined today as quarterly results showed a drop in users of the messaging platform, overshadowing news of a third straight quarterly profit.

Reports that the monthly active users fell by one million from the past quarter to 335 million in the period amid a purge of fake accounts and a crackdown on “bots” that manipulate the platform, overshadowed a profit of $100 million in the second quarter as revenue rose 24 percent to $711 million.

Shares in Twitter slumped 16 percent in pre-opening trades in a market jittery following a weak outlook from social network leader Facebook.

Chief executive Jack Dorsey said the results reflect investments “in the long-term health” of Twitter, noting efforts to weed out violence and inappropriate behavior. Dorsey said;

“Our second quarter results reflect the work we’re doing to ensure more people get value from Twitter every day,”

“We want people to feel safe freely expressing themselves and have launched new tools to address problem behaviors that distort and distract from the public conversation.”

Twitter in recent weeks has stepped up efforts to weed out accounts that promote violence or hate speech, and some reports suggested this could lower the user base by millions.

The company has said most of the blocked accounts were revoked within the first 30 days, and thus not part of the user base count.

Carl Ikeme retires from football after battle with Cancer

Carl Ikeme retires

Super Eagles’ goalkeeper, Carl Ikeme has announced his retirement from football after months of battling with Acute Leukamia.

The 32-year-old Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper made 274 domestic career appearances in all competitions, with over 200 of them coming for Wolves, the club he joined in 2000 as a 14-year-old.

His retirement was confirmed by Wolves executive chairman Jeff Shi on the Club’s website.

“Having been at the club since the age of 14, Carl is far more than just a player in our eyes – he is our brother and an important part of our family.

“When Carl came to tell us his news, yes there was sadness, but also great happiness to see him so healthy and hungry for the opportunities that lay ahead of him.

“Carl is strong, a fighter, something he has proven in his playing career and also during what has been a very challenging time for him, so I have no doubt he will be a success in whatever he does next.

“We wish Carl all the very best for the future, but remind him he will always remain a part of the Wolves family.”

Wolves managing directorLaurie Dalrymple said:

“While this news will undoubtedly leave the Wolves family feeling sadness for someone they care about deeply, it also gives us the opportunity to celebrate an exceptional career and a true servant of this football club.

“A brilliant goalkeeper who deservedly earned promotions and international caps, Carl’s exemplary application on the pitch was matched off it by tireless hard work and a positive attitude that will continue to be an inspiration for young players coming through our Academy for many years to come.

“I have been in touch with Carl regularly during a very difficult year for him and his family, and I have been constantly in awe of his strength, positivity and heart at a time of great adversity.

“Carl will, without doubt, be a permanent member of the Wolves family, and I am certain he has a very bright future ahead of him in whatever path he chooses to take.”

Wolves sporting director Kevin Thelwell said:

“I have had the honour and privilege to work alongside Carl for the duration of my time at Wolves, and you would be hard pressed to find a more dedicated and hard working professional.

“The outpouring of support and love from our supporters this time last year, and throughout Carl’s treatment has been testament to how we all feel about Carl, and we are delighted that he is now in complete remission.

“However, it is definitely his contribution on the pitch that he will be most remembered for at Wolves, and forever held as inspiration to future generations of our Academy.

“I’m looking forward to seeing more of Carl this season, and seeing him back at Molineux where he belongs.”

“I will return Nigeria to the path of peace & prosperity” – President Buhari

President Buhari has assured Nigerians of his administration’s commitment to return the country to the path of peace and prosperity.

He also said it was wrong to blame leaders alone for the present state of affairs in the country.

The President, who spoke at the graduation ceremony of Senior Course 40 of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, Kaduna State, assured of his administration’s efforts to take Nigeria to higher.

“May I assure you of this administration’s effort to return our country on the path of peace and prosperity,” he said.

Buhari, who recalled his campaign promises during the last general elections, assured of his administration’s commitment to return the country to the path of peace and prosperity.

He said: “I made three key promises to Nigerians. First is to address the various security challenges facing our country; second, to reposition our economy and third to fight the serious challenge of corruption, which had eaten so deep into the very fabric that sustain our nation.

“On the issue of security, we recognize that security challenges abound in all countries of the world, including Nigeria.

I am certain, with the consistent efforts of our security agencies; these challenges shall be considerably mitigated and minimized.”

The President said the citizenry cannot be absolved of the blame as well in the nation’s woes.

His words: “The change we desire in Nigeria actually starts with us as individuals. In Nigeria, there is the tendency to lay the blame for the state of affairs in the country on the doorsteps of leaders alone.

“Yes, leaders have a major role to play in providing direction and the enabling environment. However, the citizens’ role also is vital in attaining meaningful transformation of any society.”

The President hailed the military for their sacrifice, saying:

“Over the years, the Nigerian Armed Forces have provided the appropriate response to the numerous security challenges facing our country.

“Their response to Boko Haram insurgency, militancy, kidnapping, activities of separatists and armed militias, amongst others, have been very commendable.

“The military has also committed huge resources towards stability of the West African sub-region and world peace in general.

“Our efforts in Liberia and Sierra Leone, which stabilized the West African sub-region readily come to mind.

“More recently, our armed forces have also contributed to the peace in The Gambia, Mali and South Sudan.

“It, therefore, goes without saying that a force that is extensively committed to the maintenance of local, national, regional and world peace needs to be adequately prepared to confront security challenges as they emerge.”

Buhari said his administration will give attention to training in the military.

His words: “It is pretty obvious that our dear nation is having its fair share of security challenges.

“However, it is important to reiterate that capacity building remains the bedrock of combat ready, effective and efficient military.

“Incidentally, our tri-service training institutions, especially the Armed Forces Command and Staff College Jaji, have been playing critical roles in this regard.

“These institutions, as well as the single-service training institutions, must continue to be provided with the requisite support to enable them to discharge their obligations.

“To this end, the Federal Government will continue to give priority to the training and welfare of officers and men of our armed forces.

“This is not only because we salute their courage and sacrifice for the safety and stability of our country, but because the armed forces of Nigeria have continued to be the bastion of our unity.”

The President also said he was delighted to observe that amongst the graduating students are 11 international officers from various African countries. He, therefore, called for partnership among African countries to tackle security challenges facing the continent.

Benin prince arrested for scamming job seekers out of $54k

A Nigerian prince from the ancient city of Benin, and his accomplice have been accused of bamboozling hundreds of job seekers out of thousands of dollars by promising them high-paying gigs in New York.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office said Osmond Eweka, 31, a prince from the Royal Family of Ogiesoba Eweka of the Great Benin Kingdom and his friend Kamel McKay, 27, pretended to run two consulting firms in Manhattan telling clients that if they paid a fee they would be placed at various jobs across New York City.

Eweka, 31, appeared in a Manhattan court on Thursday where he pleaded guiltyto charges of larceny and scheme to defraud.

Prosecutors said they would invite their victims to their office for an interview and then have them pay a fee, ranging between $300 and $700, the Post reports.

But in reality, there was no such job,’ she said at Eweka’s arraignment on Thursday in Manhattan Supreme Court.

After collecting the money, the men would send the job seekers to different businesses, where they were turned away by employers who weren’t expecting them.

The victims then found that they could no longer get in contact with the alleged fraudsters or the consulting firm. According to authorities, Eweka and McKay duped 250 people. .

They ran the alleged scam from January to June 2018. Both men were indicted on charges of larceny and scheme to defraud. McKay was arraigned last week and released on $200,000 bail, theNew York Times reports.

In 2016, Prince Eweka married attorney Imade Igbinedion in an elaborate wedding ceremony in Nigeria.

Oyo Lawmaker dumps APC for PDP

Oyo lawmaker dumps

An Oyo lawmaker, Olusegun Olaleye, on Thursday, defected from the All Progressives Congress to the Peoples Democratic Party.

The member of the Oyo State House of Assembly, who said his decision was not triggered by the exodus of federal lawmakers from the APC to the PDP on Tuesday, noted that earlier before Thursday, he had made consultation with people before arriving at his decision.

The Oyo lawmaker representing Ibadan North II state constituency in the legislative house, said he left the APC because the ideals of the party had been eroded. Olaleye who spoke to news men while being received at Ward 11, Ibadan North Local Government by the PDP chairman in the area, Seun Adelore, said:

“I went astray in the APC but I am back to the party that will form the next government in the state. The PDP is a moving train which boasted of huge followers and good leaders like former governor Rashidi Ladoja, Sarafadeen Alli and Senator Femi Lanlehin.

“I urge all Nigerians who love democracy to go and get their Permanent Voter Cards so as to determine who rules them. They should be fully involved in the democratic process come 2019.”

Recall that  the All Progressives Congress (APC) had reacted to the defection of about 51 lawmakers from the ruling party. The party said that its leaders had worked hard to prevent further members from leaving the party.

In a statement by its spokesman, Bolaji Abdullahi, says, “In the last couple of weeks, our party leaders have worked to stave off this situation as responsible Party leaders would do.

“It would appear however that the individuals involved have different considerations beyond the grievances that they were willing to discuss and our leaders were willing to address.

“As a truly democratic party, we respect the right of every citizen to political association.

“APC remains in firm control of 25 states of the 36 states of the federation and maintains a clear majority in the federal House of Representatives and state assemblies.

“We assure members and supporters that our great Party will continue to consolidate on our majority status in the leadup to the 2019 General Elections, even as our government continues to work hard to deliver on our promises to Nigerians”, he added.

“My mama’s gon’ call me for rocking this outfit” — Simi

Simi yesterday, stepped out in a daring ankara ensemble that showed of a little bit of her chest area, adding that the outfit was going to elicit a call from her mum.

She captioned the photo: “My mama’s gon’ call me in 5…4…3…2…?.. Outfit Designed/Styled by @kie_kie__ ?”

Meanwhile, Simi recently expressed her disapproval over a comment by popular fashion designer, Toyin Lawani where she said men were entitled to 10 women and must not be castigated for cheating.

Toyin had in her controversial Fathers Day post shared on Instagram that men are natural cheats and are thus entitled to 10 women, a statement which has not gone down well with many ladies on social media.

She also lambasted other women for insulting their baby daddies on social media and also claiming to be both the father and mother in their children’s lives.

However, Simi countering Toyin said if a man cheats constantly, he is an animal.

She went further to caution Nigerians against normalizing infidelity in an African man.

On her Instagram page, she wrote, “This narrative that all men are cheats get on my nerves because it’s really bullshit, but you see, that’s not even my problem with this.

“If you don’t hold a man that is with you to a standard, then why should he hold himself to one and vice versa. There are good men and women that choose to do the right thing unless your partner is an animal, he or she cannot do the right thing.

“Stop normalising infidelity, especially for men if you continuously allow anyone to disrespect you when you accept it as the norm, they will continue to disrespect you.

“Value is not a foreign thing, we need to quit it with the bullshit mentality that African men must cheat. Value yourself.”

Davido’s girlfriend, Chioma dumping University over love sparks outrage

Davido Frog Voice

Since Vanguard reported that trouble may be looming for Chioma Rowland, Davido’s girlfriend, as her family is not pleased with her dumping school for Davido, mixed reactions have continued to greet the report that went viral on social media.

But the love-struck economics undergraduate of Babcock University seems unruffled with the news for obvious reasons, Davido’s assurance. Davido and Chioma Refusing to react, Davido has since kept mum on the matter. According to him, he is quietly observing things.

“I just dey observe”, Davido wrote on his twitter page, to which Chioma responded,

“Let them talk bae, I’m looking at them and laughing.”

There are speculations that the ‘Assurance’ crooner may have decided not to get involved in Chioma’s family issues because he is yet to become a bonafide member of the family.

Meanwhile, critics have continued to condemn Chioma for dumping her education for a celebrated love affair with Davido.

“Yoruba demon has charmed Chioma. Igbo girls can die for Yoruba boys”, a social media user simply identified as Outraged wrote.

Grand Maze said,

“Let she not abandon her education. If she desires these things so much, she can go ahead but still complete her education while married. I will not advise her to throw away her Davido opportunity neither relegate her education.”

John Okolie described her with unprintable words;

“If this is true she must be the most stupid girl ever to bear an Igbo name.”

Patriot wrote, “Wow! This life!! How can someone abandon education, your future, for fame and money. Can you predict what tomorrow will be? Even Davido’s mum was a lecturer at Babcock University before she passed on. His father is a geologist with PhD, David himself is a graduate of music from Babcock University. Now Chioma wants to be without education because of flashy things that are temporary. What is painful is that the Igbos are very quick at blaming others especially the Yorubas for whatever happens to them. Soon they will begin to say it is because their daughter married Yoruba that’s why she’s having problem (that’s what they said with P-Square’s wife and Tonto Dike), they won’t remember now that greed is making their daughter abandon school because she has seen money and cars. God help her to listen to her parent’s advice.”

“Some people have simple problems in this life. Her problem is laziness to read”, Lade wrote.

I get bored dating one man for long – Ghanaian Lady

Little or nothing is known about a certain girl named Maame Afiba Bessa, who says she’s an aspiring cardiologist and a humanitarian until she tweeted a daring summation on her wall concerning relationship. As soon as her tweet came up, torrents of comments began to flood in with varying reactions and most were not so friendly.

“The way I get bored dating one man for long. I really can’t even see myself getting with a man who doesn’t keep me intrigued and makes me laugh till I cry. That’s how soon the way you breathe will even start pissing me off,” she had tweeted.

Most, in a fit of anger, said she would never get married. Others called her grim names not fit for publication. However, Potpourri decided to dig into her background and found out that she has a medical condition that may be interfering with her show of affection, love and trust.

“A couple of years ago I was diagnosed with GAD. For those of you who don’t know, GAD is Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Upon speaking to someone, I found out my childhood memories of constant fear plays a massive part in it,” she had posted October of last year on her wall.

She continued :

“I did not have an easy childhood growing up and for people closest to me I have always opened up about that and also enduring sexual abuse as a child. I’ve always had this fear factor in life , so much so that when things were going right in my life, I was ready for bad things to happen because I always have this mental picture that whatever was going right in my life won’t last. I will worry daily about something I thought will happen, beat myself about it and cry over it.

“I will isolate myself from people who loved me sometimes and get angry at the least thing because behind closed doors, I was battling this thing that I knew existed but was too ashamed to admit or talk about. For many years, it had such a negative impact over my livelihood,” she added.

It is often said that a book should not be judged by its cover. This Ghanaian girl who lives in Barcelona, Spain, is a classic case.

PDP raises alarm over plot to impeach Fayose

PDP raises alarm

PDP says the impeachment plot, which is being arranged in connivance with the Police, is a recipe for crisis in the peaceful state.

The PDP is aware that the plot is a desperate bid by the APC to rush into the Ekiti Government House to remove and tamper with documents and evidence confirming the rigging of the July 14 governorship election, ahead of the sitting of the election tribunal.

Having realized that there is no way their daylight robbery at the poll can stand in the court, the APC is now employing all desperate means to subvert the course of Justice.

This explains why a detachment of the Police can be hurriedly deployed to besiege the Ekiti State Assembly Complex last night without a formal request by the Speaker, the Clerk or the Sergeant-at-Arms, who is the chief security officer of the complex.

The PDP states that any resort to underhand measures to impeach Fayose, without the constitutionally required 2/3 of the members of the House, particularly at this time, when the lawmakers are currently on their annual recess, will surely be resisted by our members.

Accusing the APC of plotting crisis all over the nation and resorting to the use of harassment, intimidation and brute force against the people and our democratic institutions, PDP warns that these dispositions of APC and its Federal Government portend grave danger for our nation.

Now that the political and parliamentary establishment of the Ekiti House of Assembly has loudly declared that they do not require the services of the detachment of policemen, PDP charges the APC to immediately withdraw their armed agents from the premises of the House of Assembly.

Finally, the PDP urges the judiciary to be firm in standing by the truth on the Ekiti election and not be cowed or intimidated by the threats and pressure coming from the APC.

Nigerians know the truth regarding the rigging of the Ekiti guber election by the APC and are now looking up to the judiciary for justice in the matter.

I’ll support any candidate that’ll turn Nigeria’s fortune around – Obasanjo

Obasanjo support candidate

Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has mentioned that he will only give his supports to any Nigerian who will turn the country’s fortune around for good.

According to reports from Punch, he said this on Thursday when he received a former Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta.

Turaki, who is a presidential aspirant, came with a 10-man delegation that included a former governor of Adamawa State, Boni Haruna.

Obasanjo reiterated that he would not rest until the fortunes of Nigeria are “turned around for good.”

He identified the dearth of “qualitative leadership” as one of the major challenges confronting Nigeria, adding that men of goodwill must not keep quiet in the face of misrule.

He then called for concerted efforts from the political class towards providing the country with better leadership.

He said:

“Let me say that what is happening here today or what you’re making to happen with your delegation particularly gladdens my heart.

“You are firming up and stabilising our democracy. Democracy is not a destination but a journey and there is no nation that can claim to have reached the final destination.

“It is good for us as a nation and our democracy. We have said a lot of things that we have identified about what we need to put right as a country. What do we lack? Why are we not where we should be?

“We are so divided today the way we have not been before. People are deprived socially and economically. But you know, I have never lost hope.

While speaking with journalists after the meeting, Turaki said he came to pay respect to the former president and also to intimate him with his presidential ambition in 2019.

He said the indivisibility of the country remained non-negotiable.

He also accused the All Progressives Congress-led administration of “incompetence” due to its “inability to resolve some of Nigeria’s many challenges.”

He said:

“The meeting has been a very fruitful one. We have discussed openly, honestly and frankly about the current situation in this country and like always, Baba was of tremendous guidance to us.

“Baba has spoken in his vintage way of speaking passionately about the situation in Nigeria.

“We believe that our indivisibility as one and united nation is given and it is non-negotiable. We feel that our unity is also non-negotiable.”

That places Zuckerberg, who had been the world’s third-richest person, at Number Six, below billionaires including Berkshire Hathaway’s Warren Buffett, French business magnate Bernard Arnault, and Zara founder Amancio Ortega.

Zuckerberg’s net worth had surpassed Buffett’s in June as shares of Facebook continued to climb and Buffett continued to give much of his wealth away in charitable donations. Today, Buffett is worth roughly about $82.3bn.

Facebook’s founder is the media company’s largest shareholder, with 12.8 percent of its shares outstanding.

Zuckerberg’s paper losses come after Facebook revealed mixed earnings and slowing growth during the second quarter of 2018.

During the quarter, the company added 22 million daily active users, lower than the 41 million it added in the same quarter a year earlier.

Chief financial officer, David Wehner, told analysts in a follow-up call to brace for a possibly deeper slowdown as the company seeks to expand new offerings such as Stories and increase privacy and security for users.

At least 16 brokerages cut their price targets on Facebook after executives said the cost of improving privacy safeguards, as well as slowing usage in the biggest advertising markets, would hit the company’s profit margins for more than two years.

Facebook shares were down 20.4 percent at $173.20 in pre-market trading, a decline that would wipe about $128bn off the company’s value — or nearly four times the entire market capitalisation of Twitter Inc.

Facebook’s second-quarter results were the first sign that a new European privacy law and a string of privacy scandals involving Cambridge Analytica and other app developers are hitting the company’s business.

Facebook also warned that the toll would not be offset by revenue growth from emerging markets and the company’s Instagram app, which has been less affected by privacy concerns.

Describing the announcements as “bombshells,” Baird analysts said the issues were, to a large degree, “self-inflicted” as Facebook sacrifices its core app monetisation to drive usage.

Of 47 analysts covering Facebook, 43 rate the stock as “buy,” two rate it “hold,” and two rate it “sell.” Their median target price is $219.30.

Some analysts said Facebook’s issues would not be easily resolved.

“Unlike Netflix, whose quarterly shortfall we saw as temporary, here we see an evolution of the story, albeit a portion of which we expected,” said Daniel Salmon, analyst at BMO Capital Markets.

Others, however, saw a silver lining in Facebook’s emphasis on more engaging content and its promotion of stories on its News Feed, which would support revenue over the longer term.

“Bears win this quarter … but not the war,” said Brent Thill, an analyst with Jefferies.
