A Nigerian Lady has taken to popular micro-blogging site, twitter to posts screenshots from a conversation she had with a man who insulted and called her names because she refused to visit him.

The lady who was obviously tweeting with anger, shared the screenshots and declared that she was done giving contacts to men.

She wrote:

I’m done giving my contact to guys, just because I don’t want them to follow me around, embarrassing themselves. For God sake I don’t even need or want you, it’s called being considerate.

Just imagine the nonsense.

To those who thought I should’ve ignored him from the very start. Y’all right, but I guess my curiosity got the best of me. I was really angry and I guess I wanted to see how far he would really take things and even have the last word before blocking him.

Nigeria comes first in abortion pill search country in the world

Nigeria comes first

Ghana and Nigeria are the two countries with the highest search interest in Misoprostol, an abortion pill, the BBC reports.

According to the BBC, data of countries who search for abortion pills the most, was sourced from Google.

Google data shows how often exact phrases are searched about a topic.

“Abortion pills” is a top search phrase on abortion in all the countries analysed by the BBC.

“How to abort” is the most commonly asked question in more than two-thirds of countries.

“How to use Misoprostol”, “Misoprostol price”, “buy Misoprostol” and “Misoprostol dosage” are among the most common searches around abortion.

Of the 25 countries with highest search interest in Misoprostol, 11 are in Africa and 14 in are in Latin America.

All but two of the countries–Zambia and Mozambique, either ban abortions altogether or permit them only to save a woman’s life or health.
Countries with stricter abortion laws do the most

The BBC findings also suggest that countries with stricter abortion laws have greater search interest in abortion pills.

By buying pills online and sharing medical advice through WhatsApp groups, women are increasingly turning to technology to sidestep legal barriers to abortion.

Whatsapp groups on abortion pills have become the modern face of the so-called “DIY abortion”, the BBC writes.

Countries with the strictest laws, where abortion is allowed only to save a woman’s life or banned altogether, have over 10 times higher search interest in abortion pill Misoprostol compared to countries with no restrictions, BBC analysis shows.

Abortion is legal in Ghana only in cases of rape, incest, foetal impairment or to preserve a woman’s mental health.

Nigeria’s abortion laws are stricter. Abortion is only allowed in Nigeria in situations where a woman’s life is in danger.

Abortion is induced medically or surgically.
‘Least safe’

The BBC reports that about 14 percent of all abortions were “least safe”, which means they were provided by untrained persons using dangerous methods, such as the introduction of foreign objects and use of herbal concoctions.

When an abortion is incomplete, medical professionals may either advise further medication, or a surgical option, depending on the situation.

At least 22,800 women die each year from complications of unsafe abortion, the Guttmacher Institute reports.

Another bridge built by Gov. Okorocha collapses in Owerri

bridge built

The bridge at the Children’s Amusement Park located at the Ikemba Ojukwu Centre in Owerri, Imo, built by Gov. Rochas Okorocha’s administration has collapsed.

Witnesses at the scene told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Owerri on Wednesday that nobody was killed or injured in the incident.

The incident which caused pandemonium in the area, gave room for criticism by some parents whose children visited the place on May 27 during the 2018 Children’s Day Celebration.

A NAN Correspondent, who visited the scene, reports that the incident occurred after a heavy downpour on Tuesday night.

The bridge, being a major tourism site, has been used to generate funds for the state government.

When contacted, the State Commissioner for Happiness and Purpose Fulfillment, Mrs Ogechi Ololo, told NAN that she had yet to be briefed on the cause of the incident.

Mr Collins Ibe, who witnessed the incident, told NAN that the windstorm that accompanied the downpour might be responsible for the collapsed of the bridge.

Another witness, Mrs Mary Nlemadim, said: “It is unfortunate that this is happening in the state, especially at a place that is supposed to be a recreation centre.

“I thank God that it happened in the night when people were not around; otherwise, there might have been casualties.

“I urge the state government and engineers working on construction projects in the state to be more dedicated and thorough,” she said.

Also, an Engineer, Mr Okechukwu Uba said: “There is need to critically look at all the construction projects going on in the state.

“This is necessary to avoid unnecessary waste of resources, time and human capacity.

“These projects need to get proper approval from professional hands or bodies; they also need to be properly supervised by qualified and experienced personnel.

“Again, they have to be done systematically and not many things at the same time.

“These projects need to be finished up in a tidy manner and subjected to stress tests where necessary, before being opened to the public,’’ he said.

NAN reports that the state Chairman of the Nigeria Society of Engineers, Mr Emeka Ugoanyawu, had earlier warned against substandard engineering work in the state.

Also, the National President of Council for the Regulation of Engineers in Nigeria (COREN) Mr Kashim Ali, had recently faulted the quality of a flyover constructed by the Okorocha administration, located at Orji.

Ali, as a matter of urgency, urged Gov. Okorocha, to stop work on the flyover.

15 things you probably didn’t know you can do with your Whatsapp

15 things

Did you know you could pin your important chats on the top in WhatsApp? Alternatively, that you can read WhatsApp message without informing the sender?

Like these, there are several other nifty features/tricks/tips that can change the way you use the world’s most popular instant messaging app, according to www.gadgetsnow.com, here is a list of the tricks.

Read WhatsApp message without informing the sender

To do this, scroll down to the notification plan and enable the flight mode on the smartphone. Once done, just open the WhatsApp chat and read the message.

After reading the message, make sure that you close the app from the multi window so that it does not run in the background and synchronise you when online.

After the complete process, remove the phone from flight mode.

Share your live location

After rolling our live location sharing on Messenger, Facebook rolled out the feature on WhatsApp too. Once you share your live location with someone, he or she would be able to track wherever you go for the period you select. The three periods that can be selected are 15 minutes, one hour and eight hours.

To share your live location, open WhatsApp, tap on the ‘Attachment’ icon on the typing space bar and select ‘Location.’ Once you do this, you’ll get two options – ‘Share live location,’ and ‘Send your current location.’ Tap on the former option and select the period.

‘Unsend’ messages

Did you just send a wrong message to the wrong person on WhatsApp? You needn’t panic. There is still a way to delete it. Just select the message and press ‘Delete’ on the top bar which has other options like reply, mark star, copy, forward and information. Once you press ‘Delete,’ you’ll get two options – ‘Delete for me’ and ‘Delete for everyone’. Select the second one so that the recipient cannot read the message that you mistakenly sent them. However, you only get seven minutes to delete the message after you have sent it.

Pin your chats

There are times when you want your most important chats on the top of your conversation list. Scrolling down through scores of messages to find that chat can be tedious. Not anymore. In a recent update, WhatsApp added this function. To pin a contact to the top of the list, you have to long press on the chat from that person and then press the ‘pin icon’ that appears right next to delete, mute and archive icons on the top of the page. As of now, only three contacts can be pinned to place them on top of the conversation list.

Create GIFs

You can even create GIFS within WhatsApp and send it to your friends using videos that are saved on your smartphone.

Open the WhatsApp chat of the contact whom you want to send the GIF to. Click on the attach icon > Select Gallery > Go to videos. Select the video you wish to create in a GIF from. As soon as you do this, it will open up in the video editing section of WhatsApp. Here, you have to adjust the length of the video to six seconds or less, as WhatsApp does not support longer GIFS. Once the video length is less than six seconds, the option of converting it to a GIF will appear as a slider on top right. Now all you need to do is take the slider towards GIF, and you’re set.

Editing images

What you can do here is doodle on pictures, and add text and emoticons on them before sending. Select attach > Go to gallery > Select the image you wish to share. Once you do this, the image will open in WhatsApp’s photo editor. On top right, you’ll see options of adding text, emoticons and doodle. You can resize and change colours of all three once you add them to your image.

Format text

You can bold text on WhatsApp by starting it and following it with an asterisk ‘*’. Similarly, for italics, make sure the text is preceded and followed by an underscore sign ‘_’. You can also make your text appear struck off with Strikethrough. For that precede and follow it with tilde ‘~’.

Chat in different languages

English is not the only language in which you can communicate on WhatsApp. If you ever want to type in a different language, open WhatsApp > Go to Settings > Select Chats > Click on App Language. You can then pick the language you wish to type in.

Add conversation shortcuts

Rather than opening WhatsApp and going to the chat of your favourite friend each time you want to talk to them, you can add a conversation shortcut on your home screen. Just long press on the conversation, click on three dot on top of the page and click ‘Add chat shortcut’.

Customise notifications

WhatsApp can send you customised notifications contacts. Open the contact you wish to customise notifications for, click on the top bar, and select ‘Custom Notifications’.

Suicide hotline numbers

WhatsApp actually has suicide hotline numbers. Just go to Settings > Help > FAQ > Security and Privacy. The second last option in the list that will drop down is ‘Global Suicide Hotline Resources.’

Find out when your message has been read

If you want to know if someone has not read your message or they are simply ignoring you, just long press on the message you have sent and then select information icon ‘i’ on the top bar. You will get to know if your message has been read or not. However, you can only know the exact time your message has been read if the person does not turn read receipts and last seen off.

Turn off read receipts

Chances are you already know about this one. You can turn off read receipts on WhatsApp by going to Settings > Selecting Account > Clicking on Privacy and then deselecting Read receipts.

Turn off last seen

Do you feel that people getting to know when you last opened your WhatsApp is intrusive? You will be happy to know that WhatsApp lets you change that. Just go to Settings > Select Account > Click on Privacy > Choose Last Seen and then select the most suitable option.

Switch off media auto-download

Almost on a daily basis, you perhaps receive a multitude of photos and videos on WhatsApp — half of them are actually not needed. You can manage what is downloaded out of all those “Good Morning, have a nice day” type of pictures and videos that you get on a regular basis.

Open WhatsApp, make sure you are seeing the main window – where all your chats are displayed. Tap the three vertical dots on the top right > Settings.

Now tap Chat settings > Media auto-download. You will see three options: When using cellular data, When connected on Wi-Fi and When roaming. Tap each one and disable auto-downloads by unchecking all three options – Images, Audio and Video.

Tobi explains why reality stars fade away after the show, reveals why ‘Double wahala’ season was better

Second runner-up of BBNaija Double Wahala, Tobi Bakre spoke to Pulse recently, and explained why the reality stars fade away after the shows like Big Brother Naija.

The reality star also spoke about why the Big Brother Naija: Double Wahala show and contestants are still trending on social media, and what makes the edition different from the previous season.

Read interview below:

On why reality stars fade away

Some people are not out there for the social media life. Like naturally, they are not out there for that kind of life. So they go into the reality show for whatever reason and after the show, they sink back into their private life.

But for some others, they want showbiz, they want to act, they want to host, they want to be out there. I think that’s the clear divide. They are some people that have things they want to do that need them to be out there, they need to be seen, they need to remain famous.

But for some people, it’s more like, ‘yea, I have gotten this level of buzz and it’s okay. It was fun while it lasted but I’d rather have my private life.’ So I think it’s a decision thing.

And then for some people, maybe they tried somethings to be in the showbiz world and it doesn’t go as planned. Because when you come out, people have like very high expectations, and if you don’t deliver, you just crawl back in.

On what makes the Double Wahala season different from the Gobe edition

I think the difference is that last year, everybody had a clear favourite. I mean they had people they loved, but then everybody kind of had a clear favourite.

But this time around, the finalists had their own “pushers.” They had people that were like, ‘we die for these people.’ So even when they left the house, they [fans]] take your matter so personal.

Like people in my camp, my Tobination family, the way they take [my] matter, even [I’m] like, “it’s not that serious.’ But it’s all love. They love and believe in the housemates, so they follow through.

It’s no more about the reality show, it’s now about, ‘mehn, we are invested in you.’ Everyone supporting me is like friends and family. Because I know how it is. Last year did I vote? I didn’t vote. For you to take out your phone to vote for someone, that means you want good for the person. So I really appreciate everyone who is pushing and supporting.

The third season of #BBNaija came to an end on April 22, with Miracle as the winner, Cee-C as the first runner-up, and Tobi as the second runner-up.

Falz This is Nigeria Video: Another Muslim group tackles MURIC, says even Christians are not provoked

Muslim group tackles MURIC

Shortly after the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) asked Folarin ‘Falz’ Falana to withdraw his ‘This is Nigeria’ video, a group known as Muslim Against Terror has defended the artiste.

The group says MURIC does not have an understanding of veil usage.

In the video, girls wearing hijab are seen dancing ‘shaku shaku’, hence the controversy.

While addressing the reactions that trailed the video, Falz had explained that the girls were a representation of the abducted Chibok girls still in Boko Haram captivity.

In a statement countering that of MURIC, Muslim Against Terror asked if Ishaq Akintola, director of MURIC, would “prefer watching the ladies in the video dressed in body-hugging mini skirts and shaking their bountiful parts??

It read: “In clear contradiction to what MURIC’s Professor Ishaq Akintola claimed, Islam or Muslim was NEVER mentioned in the video and the veil is not owned by Islam but worn by anyone who so feels, hopefully to the pleasure of Muslims and worn by nuns and sometimes forcibly doused by terrorists on their captors as happened in the Chibok case.

“Where did Ishaq see Islam or Muslim in this video?

“Was this subvert threat of a possible repeat of radical and meaningless, unjustified violence by misguided Islamists in the past, a means of merely defending the Buhari administration possibly negatively affected by the viral video and defending Fulani herder-related terrorism by attempting to present the video as religiously provocative? The video was not.

“If at all the video provoked any religion it was the Christian faith, by ridiculing pastors casting out demons via grabbing female breasts, and also laying direct attacks at pastors involved in the establishment of universities which their congregations cannot attend.”

Instead of threatening Falz with legal action, the group urged MURIC to focus on the issues raised in the video.

“As regards truths of value in the video, there were very many that seemed not to be digested by Professor Ishaq, including: that the people are extremely poor, medical facilities are poor, that we operate a predatory neocolonial-capitalist system fueled on fraud and exploitation, bedeviled with institutionalized corruption, that criminal cases are settled in police stations and not courts, police station closing by six, no electricity, youth work multiple jobs and yet are called lazy by the president.”

The group urged that MURIC be careful of the propagation of sensitive messages.

At the stadium, several Biafra flags were spotted chanting support for the Super Eagles..

Here are some pictures from the match… Followed by some reactions:

“We have no plans to take down the video” — Falz

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has issued Falz a seven-day ultimatum to take down his video for “This is Nigeria” or face legal actions by the organization.

This is because the singer used Girls in Hijab to dance “secular” moves.

According to The Cable, the request was made in a press release by the group’s director, Ishaq Akintola.

The statement reads:

“MURIC rejects Falz’ explanation that the girls in hijab in his ‘Shaku Shaku’ dance symbolize the Chibok girls because nothing in the video indicates that the girls represent the Chibok girls.

At least none of the Chibok girls have been seen dancing like a drunkard. They are always in pensive mood. Do they have any cause to be dancing? Are they happy?

The video manifests ethnic bias against Fulanis while it ignored the criminal activities of ethnic militia of the Middle Belt who have also massacred Fulanis and rustled their cattle in their thousands.

It is a hate video. This video has the potential of causing religious crisis of unprecedented dimension.

It is an assault on the self-dignity of every Muslim. It is freedom of expression gone haywire.

We therefore demand its withdrawal and an apology to Nigerian Muslims within seven days or the authors and their agents will face legal action if they fail to comply.

Only the scenes portraying police brutality and the money-swallowing snake in the video are near the truth.

We call the attention of security agencies to this hate action.

We remind Nigerians of the outcome of similar provocative actions in the past and their unpalatable outcomes.

The National Film And Video Censors Board (NFVCB), a regulatory agency set up by Act No. 85 of 1993 to regulate films and the video industry has a case to answer. ‘Shaku Shaku’ video was shot and released under its watch.

Instead of going violent, Nigerian Muslims should take those behind the ‘Shaku Shaku’ video to court in order to serve as a deterrent to others.

We, therefore, give notice of impending legal action against the artist behind the ‘Shaku Shaku’ video unless the latter is withdrawn and an apology is widely published within seven days”.

Pulse immediately reached out to Falz’s manager, Femisoro Ajayi, who confirmed that he was aware of the statement by the Muslim group, but they have no plans to take down the video.

‘Yes, I have seen the statement online, but we have no official response yet, the video is out there and we have no plans to take it down, we will only respond when we get an official letter directly sent to us”, he says.

Released barely over a week ago, the video which has gathered over 3.9 Million YouTube views generated a frenzy online and continues to attract reactions, both from home and abroad.

Critics have strongly pointed to various scenes in the video that they felt failed to properly capture the magnitude of the regions or situations they were supposed to represent.

His representations of the Fulani herdsmen killings and the dancing Chibok girls, a group of students kidnapped from their schools by the dreaded Boko Haram group have earned him his some critcisms.

FG scraps award of HND certificates by Polytechnics in Nigeria

FG scraps HND

The Nigerian Government has scrapped award of HND certificates by Polytechnics.

The decision was reached at the Federal Executive Council, FEC today where the approval of a comprehensive reform of Nigeria’s tertiary education system was made.

In effect, the award of HND will be limited to only the students currently admitted for the programmes.

Also, all the programmes currently being run by polytechnics, which are not technology-based, and which are about 70 per cent, will be scrapped.

Under the new rule, the polytechnics will now become campuses of the proximate universities with the Vice Chancellors of those universities appointing provosts for the polytechnics, subject to the ratification of the Universities Councils.

The polytechnics will now be limited to award of the National Diploma (ND) while those desirous of further education will be awarded the Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech) by the proximate university.

To kick-start the new policy, the nation’s two most prominent polytechnics Yaba College of Technology and Kaduna Polytechnic will henceforth be known as City University of Technology, Yaba and City University of Technology, Kaduna.

And to give legal teeth to these approvals, the FEC approved the submission of two Executive bills to the National Assembly for enactment.

The first bill will concretise the setting up of the two city universities while the second will approve the preparation and consolidation of all federal polytechnics and colleges of education as campuses of proximate universities.

The Ministry of Justice will do the preparation and submission of the two bills to the National Assembly.

Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, told journalists after the weekly meeting of the council that under the reform measures, his ministry would, however, continue to license private polytechnics and colleges of education for the award of qualification at ND and National Certificate in Education (NCE) levels.

He said, “There will be no more award of HND. After we have exhausted the current students under the programme, there will be no more award of HND.

“This means that there will be no fresh admission for HND programmes.

“And in addition, any programme that is not technical will be out of the polytechnics.

“About 70 per cent of polytechnic graduates are in the non-technical courses. It is going to be a rigorous implementation programme.”

A ministerial committee to ensure the smooth implementation of all that is required for the take-off of the reform initiatives is to begin work immediately. Adamu said,

“The HND certificate will remain a legal tender in Nigeria and holders of such certificate will continue to be recognised as the equivalent of first degree holders without discriminatory remunerations and limit to progression in the work place.

“The NCE certificate will be retained as the minimum teaching qualification at the basic level of education.

“Any higher qualifications by these private or state-owned polytechnics will be only affiliation with a university.

“So, HND is no longer in existence, but existing HND will be respected and considered legal tender.”

Nigeria ranked 16th least peaceful Country in the world

Nigeria ranked

The report, released on Wednesday, ranked Nigeria 148 out of the total 163 countries surveyed.

Iceland is the most peaceful country, closely followed by New Zealand and Austria while Syria is ranked least peaceful, coming after Afghanistan and South Sudan respectively.

In Sub-Sahara Africa, Nigeria is ranked 40 out of 44 countries, with Mauritius topping the list, while South Sudan is ranked least.

According to the report produced by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), global level of peace has deteriorated by 0.27 percent in the last year, marking the fourth successive year of deterioration.

It also said the world is “less peaceful today than at any time in the last decade”.

It added that 92 countries deteriorated, while only 71 improved. Nigeria is one such countries, up one place from its 2017 ranking of 149.

In 2016, Nigeria was pegged at 149, while the figure was 151 for both 2015 and 2014.

The report said the global economic impact of violence was $14.76 trillion PPP in 2017, equivalent to 12.4 percent of global GDP, or $1,988 per person.

The report covers 99.7 percent of the world’s population and uses 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators from “highly respected sources” to compile the index. These indicators are grouped into three key domains: ‘ongoing conflict’, ‘safety and security’, and ‘militarisation’.

All three domains deteriorated over the last year.

“There’s been a gradual decline in peacefulness over the last decade,” said Steve Killelea, head of IEP.

“The reason for this slow, gradual decline in peacefulness really comes back to the conflicts in the Middle East and North Africa, and the spillover effects into other areas.”
