As expected, the Zazu star performed his hit songs in an energetic way and even climbed a scaffolding set up inside the conference venue, while dancing.

This has sparked mixed reactions on social media, with many questioning the NBA’s choice to invite Portable as their guest musician.

While some applauded the organizers for the choice, others opined that Portable is not suitable for the conference of ‘learned fellows’.

Some others argued that someone like Falz, who is a lawyer himself, would have been a more ideal guest artiste.

“I’m still a church boy despite doing secular music” – Pheelz

Nigerian producer and singer, Phillip Kayode Moses, professionally known as Pheelz, has stated that despite his interest in secular music, he still considers himself to be a church boy.

The Finesse crooner, who was brought up in the Lagos church headed by his father, a pastor, and learned to sing and play the piano as well as other instruments, said he always knew he would transition from producer to musician.

The legendary producer stated in a recent interview with MTV Base Africa that he was surprised when his hit song Finesse became popular on Tik Tok.

Speaking about his journey as a creative, the 29-year-old said,

“That journey is long, bro. I feel like sometime in my life, I would probably make movie out of all these stories because it’s inspirational to me and I think it can be inspirational to a lot of other people.

Grinding from Coded Tunez down to running YBNL; making music with Olamide, Fireboy, Adekunle Gold, Lil Kesh, and other artists outside the label… First of all, I wouldn’t change anything for anything because the journey has been beautiful both the ups and the downs.

But I still see myself as that same kid from my church. That same 10-year-old playing the keys and my dad is doing the sermons. I still see myself as that kid in the choir because it’s still the same passion that drives me and has been driving me all these years.”

Nigerian doctor

A Nigerian doctor, identified simply as Dr Akpoki, has taken to social media to share the crucial ingredient for maintaining a successful marriage.

Addressing both married folks and those planning to get married, the doctor said it would take some level of stupidity for their marriages to work because it entails a lot of forbearance and tolerance.

Dr. Akpoki, who has been married for 38 years, added that it will be difficult for highly logical and intelligent people to sustain a long-lasting marriage.

He cited this as a contributing factor to the end of the marriage of American business man, Bill Gates and his ex-wife, Melinda.

His words,

“If you cannot tolerate the following things, don’t get married. Number one, if you cannot control your temper, do not get married. If you cannot tolerate stupidity, do not get married. If you cannot say sorry even when you are right, do not get married.

I have been married for 38 years. Falling love is ‘common sense leaving your brain’. It takes stupidity and tolerance to remain married. Those who are too smart like Bill Gates and Melinda don’t remain married. Most Nobel prize winners and very intelligent people do not maintain one relationship. It takes some level of stupidity to remain married. I have been stupid for 38 years.”

Peter Okoye to sue two banks for allowing fraudsters impersonate him

Popular Nigerian singer, Peter Okoye of PSquare music group, has threatened banks in Nigeria with legal action for allowing impersonation.

The singer took to social media to voice concern about others exploiting his identity to con innocent victims.

Peter Okoye claimed that Access and Polaris banks failed to do due diligence when the impostor opened accounts under the name “Peter Okoye PSquare” with them.

Online scammers have taken advantage of his lottery scheme, which he has been conducting, to prey on fans who think they are doing business with the musician.

Peter threatened to file a lawsuit against the two aforementioned banks after becoming tired of the continual criticism from those who allege he conned them by requesting money.

He said that he would sue for damages and intended to call out other institutions, asking why banks would allow anyone to create an account in his name without verification.

Peter added that he suspected that the banks were working with some of the fraudsters due to the way they manage impersonation.

Mr P tweeted,

“Enough is enough. It’s either an inside job or otherwise. I have a name to protect here and save some of these innocent victims. So get ready for me and my legal team.

How can @polarisbankltd and @myaccessbank allow someone to open an account in the name of “PETER OKOYE PSQUARE” without valid means of identification, no BVN, no biometrics, no verified address or even utility bill to correspond with the address of the account owner.

Now they are using my name to scam innocent people. I’m suing this bank for damages @officialefcc take note.”

Nigerian woman weds her Romanian man five months after meeting him online

A 37-year-old Nigerian woman, Amaka Roberts, has taken to social media to express her happiness after she got married to her Romanian spouse five months after they met online.

Amaka said in a series of posts on her Instagram page that she had given up on finding true love after waiting for so long and experiencing so many heartbreaks from guys she had previously met.

She claimed to have found her spouse via a dating app in March 2023, and that during the second week of their long-distance relationship, he had requested their “marriage list.”

On August 4, she said, he traveled to Nigeria after five months of dating. They were legally married on August 5 and were married in a regular church ceremony on August 12.

She said before she got married, her father, who is a pastor, felt ashamed as he couldn’t pray for single ladies to get married while his daughter was getting older without being married.

Sharing their love story, Amaka wrote;

“For those asking about how we met…
Our Love story.

March 5, 2023, I met my Romanian but UK based Husband on a dating app.

I had almost given up and was about deleting the app when he liked my profile, we matched and I said ” hello” and that was how it all started.

2 weeks later, he met with my parents virtually…asked for traditional marriage rites lists.

My Dad hesitated at first cos he was still in doubt if he was real or not cos I’ve had lots terrible experiences with men who came to meet my parents for my hand in marriage but later turned out to be either married or Playboys….so my dad was very sceptical about this… but being a pastor he asked for sometime to pray about it which he did….& his mind was at peace.

He sent the list…and My husband ( then my online boyfriend) sent the Money for everything in the list including my bride price, this was done after his parents met with my parents for a virtual introduction.

Fast forward to August 4th 2023, he came down to Nigeria from UK for the very first time… I was very shy to hug him properly cos my parents went with me to the airport to pick him up.

Then August 5th, we had our Court Wedding….and August 12, we did both the Traditional & Church wedding….His parents couldn’t attend physically cos of his Dad’s health but they followed it all through Virtually as it was transmitted Live for them to watch.

It was a very emotional day… God was involved from the beginning to the end, the atmosphere was charged with God’s presence as my Dad led me inside the church down the aisle.

It was the happiest day of my life getting married to the man whom God used to take away all the name calling, mockery & tears I was experiencing as a 37 years old unmarried single lady!
God never comes late, He only has His time table & He follows it duely!

To Him alone be the Glory”

“Burna Boy has not by himself done anything that can be remotely described as great” – Actress Ireti Doyle’s ex-husband, Patrick Doyle

Veteran actress Ireti Doyle’s ex-husband, Patrick Doyle, has shared his opinion on Grammy-award winning singer, Burna Boy following his controversial assertion that Afrobeats music lacks substance.

Taking to his Facebook page, Patrick Doyle stated that Burna Boy has not, by himself, done anything that can be remotely described as great.

Doyle argued that the feats that appear to be puffing the likes of Burna Boy up, have to be properly attributed to great singers like Fela, Sunny Ade, Majek Fasek, and others who created pathways for the likes of Burna Boy and others to walk through effortlessly.

He wrote;

“The credit for the feats that appear to be puffing the likes of Burna Boy up have to be properly ascribed to the greats who cleared the thorny paths that have created pathways for his likes to walk through practically effortlessly.

Burna Boy has not by himself done anything that can be remotely described as great. He and his peers are recipients of the labours of heroes past. They need to be humble and respectful of their diligent and truly pioneering predecessors. Great artistes like SunnyAde, Fela Anikulapo, Majek Fashek , I, k. Dairo and a galaxy of others who paved the way from the 60s, to the 2000s. Greatness and great feats don’t exist in a vacuum. Let us not contribute to the creation of an arrogant and obnoxious monster.”

“Nigerian artistes have a great platform today because of Fela” – 9ice

Legendary Nigerian singer, Alexander Abolore Adegbola Akande, popularly known as 9ice, has noted that the late Fela Anikulapo-Kuti offered Nigerian musicians the chance to succeed.

In a recent interview with Sis Project Studios, the “Gongo Aso” hitmaker said that Fela, the father of Afrobeats, presented a genre that made things simpler for many artists who were trying new things and seeking a method to show the world their abilities.

He added that Afrobeats taught him a lot and he is glad to be alive to emulate what the great people have done.

9ice said,

“Fela Anikulapo-Kuti gave us the platform which is Afrobeat for us to climb on top. We were trying to do Afropop. We were trying to do afrobeats. We were trying to do different names. But Baba [Fela] already has something that the world recognized.

“Afrobeat taught me a lot. King Sunny Ade, Ebenezer Obey, and Fela Anikulapo-Kuti are our grandfathers. And I’m glad to be in existence to emulate or to follow what they’ve done.”

#BBNaija All Stars: “Tox!city won’t win this season” – Mercy Eke reacts to CeeC’s face-off with Pere

Big Brother Naija All Stars housemate, Mercy Eke, has shared her thoughts on the clash between CeeC and another housemate, Pere.

The disagreement arose due to her absence at a general meeting for their wager task.

Ike had gone to inform Ceec that the housemates were not happy with her decision to snub the meeting, and shared some of the things the housemates said about her.

This enraged Ceec, and she questioned why they singled her out when Angel, Alex, and Mercy were also absent from the meeting.

She specifically attacked Pere, whom Ike had claimed complained about her refusal to show up at the meeting. This degenerated into a serious clash, with Ceec hurling insults at Pere and calling him names.

At some point, Pere stated that he is not Tobi Bakre, CeeC’s romantic interest in the ‘Double Wahala’ edition of the show, whom she fought fiercely with during their season in 2018.

This evidently got her angrier and she lashed out at Pere, claiming he has been in her DMs since 2018, begging for her attention.

A few minutes after their clash, Mercy Eke expressed her opinion and claimed that CeeC was just trying to create issues and unnecessary toxicity.

She said,

“They say they don’t want to do chores so it can cause issues. They pick on it and shout, then create toxicity. Toxicity will not win this season, it’s scratching them to be angry, to be mad and fight the whole universe. It’s not going to work this All Stars.”

Designer of Nigeria’s flag, Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi dies at 87

The designer of the Nigerian flag Pa Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi has passed away at the age of 87.

According to his family, Pa Akinkunmi passed away in the early hours of Tuesday, August 29, after a brief illness.

One of his children took to Facebook to announce his tragic demise.

“Life is indeed transient; I can say boldly that you live a life with a landmark. Continue to rest, my father! Pa Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi (O.F.R.): Great Man has gone.”

The late Pa Akinwunmi, who was born on May 10, 1936, had his primary education at Baptist Day Secondary School in Ibadan and his secondary education at Ibadan Grammar School in Ibadan. He began his career as a civil servant in the Secretariat of Ibadan and then went abroad to Norway Technical College to study agricultural engineering.

While living overseas in 1958, Akinkunmi came across an article in a national newspaper asking for ideas for the Nigerian flag in light of the country’s impending independence from British rule. His entry was selected as the top one out of the about 2,000 others.

A red sun with flowing rays was placed on the white band of the flag’s initial design, which was bordered by two green bands. The oversight committee finally abandoned the sun to create the current design.

The ingenuity and subtlety of Akinkunmi’s design were factors in its selection (the white band symbolizes peace, while the green bands reflect the country’s immense natural resources and forests). On Independence Day (October 1, 1960), the American flag was raised in place of the British Union Jack.

When Akinkunmi’s design was chosen, the government gave him 100 pounds. Additionally, President Goodluck Jonathan bestowed upon him the MON (Member of the Order of the Niger) Award.

May his soul rest in peace. Amen.

Soldiers seize power on live TV after president Ali Bongo’s third term re-election in Gabon (video)

Soldiers seize

A group of top military officers in Gabon appeared on television in the early hours of Wednesday, August 30, to seize power following President Ali Bongo’s re-election.

During a live broadcast on Gabon 24, the officers said they were speaking on behalf of all security and defence forces in their country.

They said they have annulled the election results, closed all borders until further notice and dissolved all state institutions.

“In the name of the Gabonese people … we have decided to defend the peace by putting an end to the current regime,” the officers said.

There was tension in Gabon after the election last Saturday, which saw president Bongo emerge winner, thus extending his family’s 56-year grip on power.

The opposition party, who  had been pushing for change in the poor country despite being rich in oil and cocoa, claim there was multiple electoral malpractices during the election.

A lack of international observers, suspension of some foreign broadcast, and the government’s decision to turn off the internet and impose a night-time curfew after the voting also raised concern about the transparency of the election, prompting the military coup.

This coup makes Gabon the latest country to be taken over by the military after Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger Republic.
