A former pupil of Shalom Academy, Nsukka, Enugu State, Chinecherem Cynthia Ali, whose story went viral after she made A grade in all the subjects she took in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination, shares her success story with TOLUWANI ENIOLA
Please introduce yourself.
I hail from Umuagama community in Enugu State. I am the third of eight children. I am 18 years old. I attended Shalom Academy in Nsukka, Enugu State. My parents are not so rich but they gave me adequate care. My dad is a teacher. He also has a poultry farm. My mother works as a medical lab scientist in a district hospital.
You became the first pupil in your school to earn A grade in all the subjects you sat for in WASSCE. What motivated you to achieve the feat?
While I was in school, my priority was to make a wonderful result. I had clarity of purpose in what I wanted to achieve. My elder brother was the chief motivator. He made six As in his WASSCE last year. He told me I could do better than he did. He planted that goal to surpass his feat in me. Whenever I had a problem with my studies, he was always around to help me out. He practically taught me the techniques to excel in the subjects. He prepared my mind about the syllabus in SS3, who the teachers were and what would enable me to get the best from each of them.
He told me I needed to put in extra efforts in whatever I was doing. On my first day in school, when I got to SS1, my chemistry teacher called me and told me certain things about my goal. He told me no one had ever made nine As in the school. He said he heard an inner voice that I could break the record. I was just laughing when he told me. I had a note which I titled, “My future WASSCE results.”
I wrote down my results on the note, filling As across all the subjects I was to sit for. I prayed to God to help me achieve the goal. My friends who saw the note said I was going crazy. But I told God to help me. Another teacher that helped me a great deal was my biology teacher. She prepared a study timetable for me to follow. She told me to study at least two hours at a stretch. The two teachers (chemistry and biology) told me my goal was achievable.
Have you always had an excellent result like this?
By God grace, I have always excelled in my studies. My results were always among the best.
What did you say when you saw your outstanding result?
I was overwhelmed with joy. It was a record-breaking result because no one had ever made that result in my school. On that day, I was sleeping. My brother came to wake me up and broke the news. When I saw it, I thought I was dreaming.
How many hours did you study daily?
In our school, we were mandated to observe our preparatory classes for day students. From 2.30pm to 4pm, I would go home to cook and do other things I needed to do till around 7pm. From 7pm till 10pm, I was always reading my books daily. Sometimes, I could set aside five or six hours to read.
How did you cope with the distractions from boys in school?
I never had a boyfriend. One thing I learnt along the line was that once one is serious with one’s studies, it will be difficult for boys to approach one for a relationship. When I was in SS1, one day I entered the class. There was this male classmate of mine who was always disturbing me. I was reading my book. We had just finished the computer practical. Others were discussing while I was reading my book. Then the boy said, “What’s the problem with you? Is it that you cannot rest, at least talk to people.”
He said I didn’t need to be reading every time. I was able to overcome the pressures of male pupils because I didn’t entertain any unserious talks. They knew me for that so they avoided me. Also, I was a day student, so I spent most of my time in class. We had preparatory classes by 4pm so I was always at home when I was not in school. This made it impossible for any boy to approach me. Maybe if I was in the boarding school, it would have been a different story. I am a quiet girl. Because I rarely had time to chat with others, they said I was a proud girl. But I taught a few of my classmates in my spare time.
What subject was the most challenging for you and how did you overcome it?
I think physics posed the greatest challenge. I always found it hard comprehending the subject. The situation changed when I got to SS3. Our physics teacher always gave us tests every week. If you failed the test, he would cane you. I was afraid of his cane. I then made up my mind to study hard. Along the line, I realised that physics was not even as difficult as I thought. Mathematics was easy for me. God was just helping me at every stage. I found out that I understood what I was taught quickly. We had five mathematics teachers. While in school, mathematics was divided into five areas. We had separate teachers for arithmetic, algebra, statistics, geometry and vector. Each of these subjects was taught separately. The way mathematics was split into five areas really helped me to have a thorough understanding of the subject. I usually excelled in my mathematics examinations even without studying. I love the subject so much.
How did you feel meeting the Enugu State governor?
I thank God for the privilege to meet the governor at my age. I am grateful to God for making it possible. Thousands of pupils in our state would like to meet the governor. For me, it is one of the most memorable moments of my life as I shook hands with the governor. The governor congratulated me and said the commissioner for education would reach out to me.
Later, I was told that the governor had given me a scholarship to study in any university of my choice in Nigeria and a prize of N1m. I felt overwhelmed. I never believed that I would be a beneficiary of a scholarship. I appreciate the government for this noble gesture.
What role did your parents play in your success?
My dad is an English teacher. He always encouraged us. He taught us English after school hours. He made sure I didn’t use a mobile phone. Once I got to secondary school, I neither used a phone nor had access to any gadget. It was a serious offence at home. It really helped me because if I had a mobile, I would have been distracted. I might have spent less time on my studies. My mum always encouraged me too. She told me that when she was my age, she excelled in her studies too. She emphasised that I could break the record. When I was in primary school, my father supported me with extra lessons at home. He also got part-time teachers for me.
Do you think you are a genius?
I don’t think I am one. I think anyone who studied hard and relied on God can make a similar feat.
What is the next step for you?
I want to study medicine. I chose medicine because I believe it would enable me to save lives. It is also a noble profession.
What did you score in the UTME?
The UTME was out before I took WASSCE. I scored 266. I was discouraged when I saw the result because I felt I should have got above 300 marks. The good thing is that they also use the WASSCE result to select candidates. They grade prospective candidates, using 60 per cent for the UTME and 40 per cent for the WASSCE result. When I saw my UTME results, I was just praying to God to excel in WASSCE result a wonderful one. When our principal saw my UTME result, he didn’t believe that it was my result because he expected more from me. UTME was very easy for me and I was disappointed when I saw the score.
Which schools did you apply to?
I applied to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and Ebonyi State University. The universities have not started issuing admission letters. They have started uploading the results. The cut off mark for medicine is 290 or so in UNN last year. I checked my result and it was 319.6, so I am hopeful I would be admitted.
Why don’t you study abroad instead?
I want to study in Nigeria first. I guess I am too young to study outside the country all alone. But I would like to do postgraduate studies abroad.
Was cramming part of your studying methods?
I am not good at cramming books. I develop many codes to remember what I read.
What are the most remarkable lessons you have learnt from your success?
I think the most important part of my success story is to do one’s best and to trust in God. I always believe that it’s only God that can enable me to fulfill my destiny.

Having a set of twins has been one of the greatest of mankind from God, a distinct natural phenomenon that happens either genetically or miraculously… either ways, it’s a blessing everyone wishes for because of its uniqueness.
And since celebrities are also “everyone”, some of them have blessed with this blessing and really, it’s the cutest thing. Here are six Nigerian celebrities who have set of twins.
The Nollywood actor, producer, turned politician is among the six celebrities who has been blessed with twin children, in fact, Desmond was blessed not once, but twice as the actor and his wife have two set of twins.
Emem Isong.
Nollywood film producer, Emem had a beautiful set of twins last year and these lovelies are a year old already. She has a boy and a girl who are really identical even though they are of different sex!
Harrysong.
Reggae Blues crooner became part of the list of Nigerian baby daddies recently but his is more unique as his Abuja based baby mama gave him not one but two children. A boy and a girl!
Peter Okoye.
Most recent on the list is the rude boy of P-Square who still can’t get over the fact that he’s a father of twins despite the fact that he himself is a twin.
The singer and his wife welcomed their twin children last month in the US, a boy and a girl.
Taiwo Aromokun.
Nollywood actress Taiwo Aromokun who also is a twin delivered a set of her own twins four years ago – we’ve seen these lads in the most fashionable ways possible as their mama bear keeps showering them with love, care and good clothes too!
Alapomeji 9ice.

Looks like “Omo beta” got carried away while performing at an event in Oyo state recently – either he got carried away or he got so much love for his fans, he decided to dash them his chain.
The 20 year old artiste while performing his trending song, “Penalty“, threw his shirtless self to a hungry looking crowd who in ecstasy of beholding their favourite singer, snatched the visible gold chain he was wearing.
The artiste had to push himself away from the thirsty crowd, but his gold chain unfortunately, didn’t push itself too… it went with the crowd and Omo beta, probably not realizing he’d lost his accessory, kept on performing.
Quite a showman that he is! Watch the video as shared by GoldmyneTV below:
Nigerian billionaire businessman and richest man in Africa, Aliko Dangote, says his refinery which is under construction will be completed in the last quarter of 2017.
In a new interview with Bloomberg, the chief executive officer of Dangote Group shared his business ideals and the next step for his business empire… with a little bit about his lifestyle.
The businessman touched on these 10 key topics.
REFINERY IN 2017
Dangote says his refinery, which would refine 650,000 barrels a day, would be among the largest in the world.
“We didn’t really realize that we were going to need almost 70 million cubic meters of sand. But we are catching up, and I’m sure we’ll be able to deliver it by the last quarter of 2017.
“We have actually never failed in delivering any project. We always deliver our projects on time and at cost. If we hadn’t delivered our projects on time, that would be something. We will definitely deliver, by the grace of God.”
LIFETIME PROJECT
To Dangote, the refinery is his lifetime project and he is backing it up with his own life to make sure it is delivered.
“We are using our own money. This is my lifetime project. I have to back it up with my own life to make sure it is delivered. I know that, yes, it’s true, a lot of people have tried to deliver on refineries in the past, mostly governments. They couldn’t.”
HE DOESN’T DO SMALL THINGS
By 2025, Dangote says he would have investments worth $50 billion in the US and Europe.
“Beginning in 2020, 60% of our future investments will be outside Africa, so we can have a balance. We are looking at petrochemicals but can also invest in other companies.
“Let’s say that by 2025, I’m looking at between $20 billion and $50 billion. Mind you, we don’t do small things.”
LEARNT FROM THE MEN WHO BUILT AMERICA
“I never worry about being too bold. In business it’s good to be aggressive, but with a human face.
“I thought at first I was really aggressive until I watched this show, The Men Who Built America. I realized that actually they were much bolder than us. Someone like Vanderbilt, he built 50,000 miles of rail! That is a very bold move. That’s why anything we do, we don’t do it small. If there’s any human being who has done this equally, I am equal to the task to do the same. I actually have a sign on my desk that says, ‘Nothing is impossible’.”
NO INTEREST IN TELECOMS
Aliko Dangote says he has no interest in the telecoms industry, his reason being that he is late to the party.
“When I look at telecom, for instance, I think that would be very tough for us. We are a little late. Some players have been in this market for 17 years already. There’s no way you can go and jump over somebody after 17 years of their hard work. So I think we would pass when it comes to telecom today.”
HE WISHES HE INVESTED IN TECHNOLOGY
Dangote says he’d have loved to invest in tech, especially because companies in that industry get bigger valuations than industries like agribusiness.
“Look at the US, the way the tech companies are getting massive. And it’s still nothing compared to the GEs, yet those don’t get that kind of valuation. I wish that we’d entered tech, but our concentration has always been in Africa.”
ARSENAL ON THE WISH-LIST
Another thing on the wish-list of the 60-year-old businessman is to buy Arsenal football club.
“I don’t want to go after Arsenal until I deliver the refinery. Once I deliver, I will go after Arsenal.
“I don’t change clubs. Even when Arsenal isn’t doing well I still stick by them. It’s a great team, well-run. It could be run better, so I will be there. I will wait. Even if things change I will take it and make the difference going forward.”
NOT INTERESTED IN POLITICS
Dangote says he has no desire to go into politics because he loves his freedom too much to lose it.
“I’m not interested. There’s quite a lot we can do from the business side. I enjoy a lot of what I am doing, and I also love my freedom—and I don’t have too much. The little I have, politics would take away. I am not ready to give that up. There are businessmen who are interested in politics. I’m not one of them.”
INTEGRITY IS HARD TO COME BY
When asked of the human flaw that frustrates him the most in business, Dangote says it’s integrity.
“In Africa, you normally need to know who you’re dealing with. You have to make sure you’re dealing with very honest people who have integrity—that’s why we have so few partnerships. Dangote itself has plenty of headaches to take care of.”
PREFERS MAKING MONEY TO SPENDING IT
In Dangote’s words, he doesn’t like to throw away money and has no home outside Nigeria. He likes a simple and quiet life.
“I’m not a person who just likes to throw away money. I spend more money on charitable things than myself. I actually don’t have any home outside Nigeria. I stay in hotels. Quiet. Simple. My life is not very lavish, and I actually get very embarrassed if I try to show that I have money.
“In Lagos, I drive myself around on weekends. I ask my driver to go rest, and then I drive myself around. I still visit my normal friends I grew up with. My house is open 24 hours a day for them. I mingle with everybody. That’s the only way to get to know what’s going on.”
Following the reports that singer, Dammy Krane who was arrested and arraigned in court over credit card fraud, has been freed of the charges, Tapjets the airline company which sued the singer has claimed that the singer is not free as no court acquitted him.
A statement obtained from Mr. Konstantin, Tapjets’ Head of flight safety and security, reads:
“There is a 180-day delay in bringing full charges. Information from our attorney indicated that his accomplice, Chukwuebuka Ilochonwu, is giving police full cooperation.
This was why they asked for 180 days to bring big charges. So he is not free. Court record says “no action” it does not say “not guilty.”
A Nigerian slay king, known simply as Frank, has taken to his social media page to give an insight to his fellow guys, telling them to stop spending on women but should start taking care of themselves, they should work on looking “beautiful”.
He uploaded a video on Instagram, where he stated that once a guy starts taking care of himself, taking care of his skin, looking handsome and all, women will flock in and will spend money on you.
He says some may even go as far as spending their school fees on you…. What do you think guys?! Let’s start budgeting for cosmetics yeah?!

President Muhammed Buhari, has been appearing in lots of photos recently, over the past two weeks now, he’s taken snaps with media teams, ex-president, archbishop and even more recently, spiritual leaders.
The president is photoed here with one of his daughters, Safina and her husband, the duo paid the president a visit in his London home yesterday, according to reports, he has since left the UK back to the country.
The couple look like they’re having a whale of a time as they continue their family vacation in Spain – Zahra and her hubby, Ahmed look every shade of adorable in this picture as they go fishing.
With the beauty looking like a country girl in her hat and sunglasses, and her hubby, casual in his jeans and Polo t-shirt, the couple’s style game proves that they’re are definitely one for each other and we can’t help but love their union!
Nollywood actor Emeka Ike still finds it difficult to believe that he’s no longer married to his wife, Suzanne Emma.
The unexpected happened earlier this year, when his 14-year-old marriage to Emma was dissolved by a Lagos Island Customary Court.
Read below;
Despite the pain she has caused you, you still declare your undying love for her?
Emeka: Love never dies. Real love doesn’t die, forget what we are talking about. The Bible says that “love covers multitude of sin.” She’s the mother of my children. She was nobody when I met her, she never knew her father. I built a house for her family in Lagos and also in Isoko. I trained her up to the master’s degree level. I gave her the exposure she needed in life. There are thousands of pretty girls who would want to marry me the first week we got divorced. But I am a gentleman, it is not about marriage for me now, it’s about doing the right thing. What is wrong with my woman? If it’s something we can redeem her from, we will still redeem her. Forget about marrying her again. I don’t need to marry again, but I need to know what was wrong with my wife. I need to know why she started blackmailing me.
Can you welcome her back into your life if she returns to you?
Emeka: Accepting her back is not the problem, but let her confess and get herself back. I believe she’s under the influence of something.
How did you feel watching her walk out of her marriage?
Emeka: It’s the most painful part of my life. I cried for 24 hours every day for three to four years. I was just asking myself what is happening to me. You know, in blackmail, you will not know what is going on because somebody is playing the game. It was much later that I knew what was happening to me. I need to know the strength of these blackmailers because we have law in this country. And with the law, we will look at the issues pro-actively.
Are your children missing their mother?
Emeka: They are not because they feel disappointed in her. She was their heroine. Her son was begging her, saying “mummy please come back because of me.” But she replied him; “I am going to marry another man and have other children.” If you can say that to your first son, it’s either you have a mental problem or you are not okay spiritually. She even said to the judge that she wanted to have other children after having four children. What is wrong with her? Her case beats my imagination. I have been blackmailed, undermined and I have been crushed. She closed down my school on the day I travelled, an investment that a student at St Nicholas was paying N385, 000, per session as school fees amounting to N880,000 every year. She went to the landlord and asked him to come and reclaim his property. Who is behind all these things? You cannot be unfair to me and get away with it, not when I’m still alive and seeking justice. I met her on the street and I saved her from the street. She told me she’s from a poor home and that she never met her father. I promised her that I would be her father and her lover. I gave her too much opportunity to swallow me.
Davido’s daughter, Imade is fast growing and her mum, Sophia Momodu says she can’t catch a breath.
Last night, Sophia revealed some new character traits the toddler is displaying, which she never expected but grudgingly admitted is exactly the kind of person she, Sophia, is.
“I just watched my daughter ignore her aunty like she couldn’t hear her talking to her, then she rolled her eyes as her aunty walked away and smirked,” said the mum of one. “I’m shook. She’s me!
“I scolded her about it but I’m shook, impressed, worried, tickled,” she continued. “I just don’t know how to feel about this mini attitude girl.”

The Nigerian Sex Workers Association has said the ongoing industrial action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, will lead to an increase in the number of female prostitutes.
This disclosure was made by the national coordinator of the association, Amaka Enemo, on Friday.
The National Coordinator noted that even without the strike, many female students had been engaging in ‘runs’.
Enemo said if the strike was not called off soon, students would embrace sex work, she told Punch.
According to Enemo, “Even without the strike, a lot of the students were doing ‘runs’, which is exchanging money for sex. But with the strike, just like a holiday, the rate of sex work will double.
“In this job, strike or holiday period is like a peak period. So, I urge them to stay safe because we cannot kick them off the streets. They should be safe and use condoms.
“The government needs to ensure that the strike is called off because if the students are left idle due to the closure of schools, it means the government is indirectly telling them to go to the streets.”
Ghanaian Reggae musician Ekow Micah quoted the Holy Bible and cited an instance where God smoked marijuana popularly known as weed.
In an interview with Akwasi Aboagye on Peace FM’s Entertainment Review, Ekow Micah said he smokes because the almighty God smoked. He quoted Psalm 18:7-8 to buttress his point.
“The earth trembled and quaked, and the foundations of the mountains shook; they trembled because he was angry. Smoke rose from his nostrils; consuming fire came from his mouth, burning coals blazed out of it”.
This news comes after dancehall artist Samini admitted to also consuming the illegal narcotic in the comfort of his home. Ekow Micah was arrested, charged and put on trial for possessing illegal weed. He was later acquitted and discharged by an Accra Circuit Court.
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has withdrawn its threat to stop the conduct of the November 18 governorship election in Anambra State.
The decision was reached after a meeting organised by a non-governmental organisation, the Ala-Igbo International Foundation with the leader of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu in Owerri, Imo State.
This is coming just days after the FG asked a court to send Kanu back to prison, for violating his bail conditions. Leader of the foundation, Professor Uzodinma Nwala, says after much deliberations which they say is still ongoing, IPOB has assured the Igbo leaders that it won’t disrupt the November 18 governorship election.
People who are eligible to vote have also been told to go out and exercise their franchise without fear of molestation.
The Ala-Igbo Development Foundation is an Igbo group that brings together Igbo academics, elders, clerics, patriotic public figures, women and youth, with the main objective of protecting and ensuring the survival of Ndigbo, their culture and civilisation as well as the development of Igboland.

Recall, Buhari has spent more than 100 days in London having left Nigeria on May 7, transferring power to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.
