Evans was yesterday arraigned before an Ikeja High Court where he pleaded guilty to the two count charges of conspiracy and kidnapping.

His lawyer, Olukoya Ogungbeje, has however alleged that Evans was forced to plead guilty by the police. According to him, Evans told him the police asked him to plead guilty otherwise they would kill him.

In a statement released to newsmen, Ogungbeje said Evans who has been in police detention since his arrest on June 10th, was denied access to his lawyers.

He said himself and his other legal team heard of his arraignment via social media as no letter was sent to them notifying them of their client’s arraignment.

“It must be noted that our client had been in police custody since 10th of June 2017 till date and his lawyer and family members have been denied access to him. His arraignment was brought to our attention through the social media platform.

We rushed to court in a bid to confer with our client before the commencement of proceedings but the Police denied us access to him.

We sought for an adjournment to enable us to confer with our client in line with the provisions of Section 36(6) (2) of the Constitution but same was turned down by the court. Moreso, the information/charge sheet was served on us in open court on the same day of arraignment.

After the purported guilty plea of our client and the court rose, our client told us clearly that the police told him to plead guilty failing which the police will kill him.

This is definitely unconstitutional and we intend to challenge this unconstitutional procedure of hoodwinking, unduly influencing, brainwashing and coercing an accused into entering a guilty plea against his wish and freewill.

Our client pointedly told us that being informed now, he will change his ‘police motivated guilty plea’ to ‘not guilty’ at the next adjourned date.

It is settled law that plea of guilty must be made voluntarily and devoid of any influence, coercion, and manipulation. We have a responsibility to assist the cause of justice in accordance with the law,” the statement read

Police operatives attached to Isiala-Ngwa North Division, during a raid of suspected criminal hideouts at Mbubo Nsulu Isiala-Ngwa North, arrested four teenagers belonging to the notorious ABC cult group.

The cultists, whose names are David Adieze aged 18yrs, Chinemere Isaac aged 14yrs, Chimezie Moses Francis 17yrs and Okon Effiong Samuel aged 19yrs were arrested with one locally made Revolver pistol, its 2 rounds of live ammunition and charms. Investigation is in progress.

Also, policemen attached to Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (F-SARS) Obehie arrested the trio of Chigozie Akpara, Ndubuisi Nwoko both of Umuokwo village Asa and Nnamdi Kanu of Umukalu village both in Ukwa-West LGA who broke into Oza Secondary School Asa sometime last year and carted away eight (8) Desktop Computer sets supplied to the School by NDDC.

The suspects confessed to the crime and the stolen computer sets have been recovered.

The same operatives while on patrol along Aba/Port-Harcourt Express way arrested the duo of Agu Sunday and Chinagorom Nwaogwugwu both males of Obigbor village Asa, Ukwa-West in possession of three trailer batteries of 200AMPS each, Battery wire and charger.

The items were stolen from Obimobio Nigeria Limited Obuaku City Aba/Port-Harcourt Express way.

The suspects confessed to the crime and the items were recovered.

A 31-year-old Nigerian Uber Driver who has been identified as, Hammed Olojo, has been saved by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad on patrol of Third Mainland Bridge as he attempted jumping into the Lagoon.

The driver who reportedly drove himself to the famous Lagos Bridge in a Uber Toyota Corolla saloon car, belonging to Kalejaiye Oluwaseyi, had written a short note and left it in the car before he was stopped by the officers who monitored him a while before walking up to him.

Confessing to almost committing the said act, Olojo, an ex-convict disclosed he was owing N10,000 in Court 3, Ikeja High Court and also owing the owner of the vehicle N80,000. Further being questioned by RRS Commander, ACP Tunji Disu he revealed that though his wife persuaded him from going ahead with his plan, but his mind was made up and was fed up of everything as he had tried all possible means to survive with no success.

His short note in Yoruba, which was translated into English in the car before leaping into the Lagos Lagoon, reads in part; “I killed myself because of the challenges I have been facing in life. I tried my best and everything has come to nothing”.

However on his own part, the car owner, Kalejaiye who was at RRS office in company of his wife noted that for two weeks, he had not remitted N40,000 per week lease to him yet and he Kalejaiye, has been paying for the service of the car. He noted that although, he told him to hand over the car last Thursday, at no time did he force him not to drive the car. He noted that he was aware that he had a court case, at no time did he put him under pressure about the car.

In the note which was dated 27th August, 2017 and signed by him, Olojo indicated his phone number and the car owner’s number. Confirming the development, Police PRO stated that the case had been transferred to State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.

A suspected cannibal and member of a kidnap gang, Roland Peter, has been arrested by the police in Rivers State for killing, beheading and using liver and intestines of his victim to prepare pepper soup.

The suspect was said to be among the kidnappers that abducted, killed and beheaded one Pastor Samuel Okpara from Edoha in the Ahoada East Local Government Area of the state on August 15, 2017.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Zaki Ahmed, who paraded Peter and 22 other suspects at the state police command headquarters in Port Harcourt on Monday, explained that guns used by the gang were also in the suspect’s possession.

He stated that the kidnap gang, including its leader, identified simply as Justus aka High Tension, had been terrorising some parts of the Ahoada East LGA.

“The command, in continuation of its onslaught against kidnapping, arrested one Roland Peter, a member of a notorious gang that kidnapped Pastor Samuel Okpara from the Edoha Ahoada East LGA in Rivers State,” Ahmed told Punchng.com.

“Pastor Okpara was kidnapped, killed and beheaded. His liver and intestines were used to prepare pepper soup and plantain pottage. The suspect was arrested while preparing the meal for his gang. He is helping the police in their investigation.”
