This lovely Nigerian lady, named Toluse Akinlabi speaks about her experience living as the only black person in her community in Ireland.
Some people who had the misconception that Africans live on trees were often shocked to find out she could speak English fluently.
She says,
Hi there! My name is Toluse, and I’m 22 years old. I was born in Nigeria and lived there till the age of six. We then moved to Lesotho, then moved on to Cavan, Ireland, where I’ve been since the age of nine—that makes it 13 years that I’ve called the Emerald Isle home.
Despite this fact, though, it can still feel like I’m a stranger here.
When I first moved here in 2003, I couldn’t understand why people kept being surprised that I spoke English fluently, that my parents both worked in the medical sector, and that I loved Kylie Minogue as much as the next person. The fact that we were middle-class Africans, and not refugees or asylum seekers, seemed like a shock to the system for many of the people in the small town we lived in.
To their merit, some people did try to make a conscious effort to be sensitive and normalise the fact that my siblings and I were the first and only black people in our school. I remember doing some colouring with classmates in my first month at school. Amanda said “pass me the skin colour” (what I would call peach), and Gillian replied, “you can’t say skin colour, because that’s not everyone’s skin colour.” Gillian will never understand how touched I was by her defence of my reality.
I can’t say I’ve ever encountered aggressive racism, but I’ve certainly experienced a number of microaggressions because of my skin colour. From guys asking if I taste like chocolate and declaring that they can “handle” me, to people asking where I’m REALLY from after I state that I’m from County Cavan. It’s like they don’t understand how it cuts at a person when you question their identity with no other basis except for the fact that their skin has got more melanin in it.
I am Nigerian and I’m Irish; I can’t twerk, but I love Nicki Minaj; I braid my hair and I play field hockey; I speak Irish, Mandarin, and Yoruba. I am not just “that black girl”; I’m Toluse Akinlabi—phenomenal woman, that’s me.

The carcass of a gigantic whale has been found on a beach in Akwa Ibom State, south south of Nigeria, off the Atlantic Ocean, but it was already being eaten by the villagers before conservationists arrived.
Villagers in Okpo Ita, Ibeno local government area of the state, said they saw the dead whale in the morning of September 15, according to Edem Eniang, a biodiversity conservationist from the University of Uyo.
Some of the villagers had started cutting off the body parts for meat before Mr. Eniang and his team of researchers, and the local authorities got to the scene, several days after it was found.
Mr. Eniang said the carcass is about 16 metres in length.
“I observed that something close to four metres was missing,” Mr. Eniang told PREMIUM TIMES, Wednesday. “That is a part of what was cut off by the villagers.”
A handful of tourists have been attracted to the scene since the news broke out.
Mother of six, Mrs. Titilayo Abdul-Hammed’s 17-year-old marriage has crashed after she made her husband a laughing stock in the neighborhood by giving the neighbours a free show with her ‘nakedness‘
An Igando Customary Court in Lagos on Wednesday granted the request of her estranged husband, Minkail Abdul-Hammed.
Abdul-Hammed, a cleric, 57, had approached the court seeking to end his 17-year-old marriage with Titilayo, because her nakedness was seen by spectators free of charge.
In his testimony, Abdul-Hammed said that his wife was always disgracing him in public as she was fond of tying only wrapper to watch television in the neighborhood.
“I bought my wife clothes, but she will never wear them; she prefers to tie wrapper on her chest.
“There was a day I came home from the mosque and was looking for my wife because she did not come for the Jumat prayer.
“I was told she was in the third house, so I went there and met her in front of the TV with residents of that house despite the fact that I bought T.V in all our rooms.
“I queried her for preferring TV to mosque and ordered her to follow me home.
“She refused and as I was trying to push her from the room, her wrapper dropped, and behold my wife was neither wearing a pant nor a brassier.
“The residents in the room saw my wife’s nakedness live and direct and were making jest of us. I was embarrassed and ashamed.
The petitioner also accused his wife who was absent from court of being fetish.
“Of recent, I noticed that my wife always lock her room and keep the key to herself whenever she wants to take her bath or do anything within the premises.
“One day, she went to buy something and locked her room as usual. I searched for the duplicate key because I was curious and opened the door.
“I sighted a paper in which a long incantation was written on it and my name was mentioned.
“I was to search her closet when I heard her footstep coming, I quickly locked the room, I took the paper to show her family members,” he said.
Abdu-Hammed also described his wife as being wasteful with food as she was in the habit of cooking far in excess of what they could eat.
“I have always told her to measure food before cooking and that she can always give out the remnant to the poor, but she prefers throwing them away.
“She has stopped cooking for me since 2012 and told me to be doing the cooking which I am still doing,” he said.
The Court President, Mr Adegboyega Omilola, in his judgment said that it was obvious from available testimony and the respondent’s refusal to appear in court that the marriage had “hit the rock”.
“Throughout the duration of this case, the respondent refused to honor court processes.Therefore, the court has no other choice than to dissolve the marriage.
“The marriage between, Minkail Abdul-Hammed and Titilayo Abdul-Hammed is hereby dissolved. “Both parties are no longer husband and wife; they are free to marry any partner of their choice without any hindrances and molestation,” he said.

Rising Nollywood Producer and actress, Joy Anyim, has reportedly been arraigned for stealing – according to reports from Akwa Ibom State, the actress was arraigned in Uyo on October 7th, 2016 for theft, in Magistrate court 6.
The mother of one is standing trial on a one count charge of theft of the sum of N460,000 from a friend, Christopher Ibok. She however pleaded not guilty to the charge.
She was thereafter ordered to be remanded in prison till she meets her bail condition of N500,000.
A man has demanded that his wife MUST return his late mother’s gold necklace before she can divorce him – 40-year-old civil servant, Mr Olufemi Ojikutu, has told an Igando Customary Court in Lagos.
He told the court on Wednesday while responding to a suit filed by his wife, Olaide, that if she insisted on divorcing him, she must return his gold because it was his inheritance.
Ojikutu said that his mother gave him and his siblings a gold necklace each to give to their wives when they marry with a condition that the wife must stay with them for life, Vanguard reports.
“When my mother was about to die, she called me and my three brothers, gave us a gold necklace each, telling us to give it to our wives that will be with us for better for worse till death do us apart. She told us the value of each gold– mine was 21 carats valued at N125,000 as at 1995 when she died. “She promised not to forgive anyone who violated her order,’’ he said.
The respondent said that he had kept the gold for about 20 years before his wife came to borrow it in 2014 and refused to give him back.
“My wife borrowed my gold necklace but has not returned it; now that she wants to divorce me, she must return the gold necklace, it is not negotiable,” Ojikutu said.
He expressed the belief that his wife must have sold the jewellery as she used to sell his clothes.
Ojikutu urged the court to grant his wife’s wish for dissolution of the marriage, saying he too was no longer in love and only wanted the return of his gold necklace.
The 28-year-old petitioner, who had approached the court to terminate her five-year-old marriage over infidelity, agreed that she collected the gold necklace from her husband.
“’I collected the gold from my husband when I wanted to go for an event but I can’t just remember where I kept it,’’ Olaide, a clothes trader, told the court.
The mother of two accused her husband of infidelity.
“My husband is having an affair; I once stumbled on some pictures on his whatsapp messages where he and his lover were sending their naked pictures to each other,”
She described her husband as an irresponsible husband and father.
“My husband does not care for me or the children; even during festive periods, he never buys the children clothes or shoes. “ My mother was the one taking care of our children. Whenever I ask him for money, he is always annoyed and often begins keeping malice with me for weeks,” she said.
According to her, she left her matrimonial home on Feb. 7, 2015 after her husband changed the key of the house and locked her out. She begged the court to terminate the five-year-old marriage, saying that she was no longer in love.
The president of the court, Mr Adegboyega Omilola, said that the case would be left on sine die stage until the petitioner returns the respondent’s gold necklace.
“Since the respondent insisted on collecting back his gold necklace, the judgment will not be read just for peace to reign until the gold necklace is produced. “ The case will be on sine-die stage,” Omilola ruled.

World’s most popular transgender Caithlyn Jenner will have no choice but to use the men’s bathroom if she comes to North Carolina according to the state’s governor, Pat McCrory.
McCrory, on Tuesday defended the state’s anti-LGBT law, and blamed “liberals” for “a major change in culture” that has forced Republicans to respond with the legislation forming an anti-LGBT law.
North Carolina’s anti-LGBT law passed in March, removes anti-discrimination protection for LGBTQ people and mandates that people use the public bathrooms that correspond to the sex they were assigned at birth.
“In the private sector in North Carolina, she can go wherever the private sector wants her to,” Governor McCrory said in Tuesday’s debate between McCrory and his Democratic opponent, state Attorney General Roy Cooper.
“If she’s going to a shower facility at [University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill] after running around the track, she’s going to use the men’s shower.”
“If you’re a man, you’re going to go to the man’s locker room, restroom or shower. If you’re a woman, you’re going to go to their appropriate shower,” McCrory said. “No change whatsoever.”
But his opponent Cooper said the law must change.
“It writes discrimination into our law and it has been a disaster for our economy,” Cooper said. “Governor McCrory continues to go across the state telling people that this is not hurting our economy. He attacks businesses who are opposed to it and says that everything is going fine. Governor, what planet are you on?”

An unconfirmed number of civilians have been killed in a latest bomb blast at Muna garage in Maiduguri, Borno state capital earlier today, Wednesday.
Members of the civilian JTF said evacuation is currently ongoing.
According to a JTF member,
“The suspected Boko Haram members were three in number and died in the suicide attack. For quite sometime now, the terrorists have been making frantic effort to attack Maiduguri, but we were always stopping them.
“Just about five days ago another was killed who came through Jiddari polo side, coming from Alidawari village and now the attack today at Muna,” Kabiru Shuibu said.
According to him, Soldiers and Police bomb squad have been detailed to the site of the blast. However, a text have been sent to Major Ibrahim Mustapha of the 7 division Nigerian Army for confirmation but there was no reply as at this time of filing this report.
But hospital sources in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital told Daily Post that 18 people were killed in the attack while 26 others were injured.

Detectives of the Department of State Services (DSS), yesterday found a Rolls Royce in the fleet of about 15 cars of one of the seven judges under investigation.
The judge was said to have hired a notable construction firm to build his palatial home and imported furniture from Brazil, Argentina and Spain. The judge, said a source close to the investigation, once conducted his “poor colleagues” around his mansion.
Another judge told the DSS that he did not know how N18million was paid into his account and he did not get alert to enable him complain to his bankers.
One of the judges also said the money found in his account was his accumulated medical allowances. Another judge was found to have submitted three assets declaration forms to the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB).
The asset forms of the seven judges, who were arrested last weekend in a controversial sting operation, were being analyzed by the DSS yesterday.
The Federal Government has foreclosed the return of all the seven judges to the bench. The government believes the judges cannot be in the dock and be adjudicating at the same time.
Those arrested are: Justices Sylvester Ngwuta and Inyang Okoro – the suspended Presiding Justice of the Court of Appeal, Ilorin Division, Justice Mohammed Ladan Tsamiya, who was picked up in Sokoto; Justice Adeniyi Ademola (Federal High Court); the Chief Judge of Enugu State, Justice I. A. Umezulike; Justice Kabiru Auta of Kano State High Court; and Justice Muazu Pindiga (Gombe State High Court).
Of the seven Justices, Tsamiya, Umezulike and Auta have been recommended for sanctions by the National Judicial Council (NJC).
Detectives have uncovered more corrupt practices traced to some of the judges undergoing probe, the source said, pleading not to be named because he is not permitted to talk to the media.
The source said:
“Operatives have discovered that one of the judges owns a mansion which was contracted to a construction firm at a huge cost. In fact, the judge imported furniture from Brazil, Argentina and Spain.
“At a stage, he conducted his ‘poor colleagues’ round the mansion in an open display of affluence. The judge has about 15 cars, including a Rolls Royce. This Rolls Royce was imported.
”During interrogation, another judge told DSS team that he did not know how and when N18million was lodged in his account because he was not getting alert from his bank. But we have evidence of withdrawals from the account.”
Responding to a question, the source added:
“We have retrieved the assets declaration forms of these judges. It was shocking that one of them has three asset declaration forms with different dates of birth.”
He said instead, the government had asked the NJC to suspend them, pending the conclusion of their trial. Those who may not be allowed back to the bench are Justice Ngwuta, Justice Okoro, Justice Ademola and Justice Pindiga.
The source said the judges could be retired.
He said however that the judges will still go through trial to enable Nigerians know that “they were actually caught in the act”.
“The position of the government is that none of these judges will be allowed back to the bench in the interest of the nation’s Judiciary. They cannot be arraigned in the dock and at the same time be adjudicating or attending to cases.
“It is left to the NJC to allow the affected judges to keep off the bench until their fate is determined. But certainly, they will face trial and the outcome will determine whether or not they will be retired or dismissed.
“We are expecting the NJC to do the needful by suspending the judges.”
It was gathered that President Muhammadu Buhari and Chief Justice Mahmud Mohammed had actually met on the arrest of seven judges.
A source said:
“The CJN sought for audience and met with the President on Saturday on the arrest of the judges. I think they compared notes but no one can give you the details.
“I think the President must have briefed the CJN on the security reports at his disposal.”

One Nigerian man named Andrew, has cried out after he was dismissed from his job yesterday over claims that he is gay – Andrew who has been working for over two years as a cook in a Nigerian hotel based in Port Harcourt, said that the whole thing came as a shocking surprise to him when he was summoned to a panel by the hotel management who inquisitively pressed to know if he is a gay and suspended him over the issue.
Speaking to NoStrings, he said;
“I was called into the managers officers, were they started asking me about if I have a girlfriend and how come they have never seen her visit me at work, but yet I have been
seen to have romantic conversations on the phone, I was shocked and surprised that what they were asking me about my own private life, something that had nothing to do with work.
Andrew said that he became very irritated and couldn’t stomach the embarrassment and therefore unconsciously raised his voice in anger to defend himself, but this further provoked the management who said that they were suspending him for further investigations.
He said;
“They have given me three weeks suspension, and I am just ashamed and embarrassed. I can’t believe that an organization that I have been loyal to for two years, will do this to me. They have even reduced my salary, and things are very difficult for me right now.
So far the hotel has placed a notice outside its front, seeking for a cook, whether or not they are replacing Andrew, no one knows yet. But Andrew said that one of the managers has called him to come for further questioning. He said;
“One of my managers, who at the meeting promised to investigate the issue, called me on the phone and asked that I come to see her for talks. But since the event, I have been very ill, and could not go, I just hope that I get a new job because I can’t imagine how I would be treated if just in case my position is retained at that hotel. But right now, I do not know if i am still suspended or sacked” He said with tears.
Andrew is a professional and excellent cook with a diploma. He has been very loyal and respectful to his employers.
