Miracle can best describe the outcome of a multiple accident yesterday in the heart of Awka, the capital city of Anambra State when a luxury bus crushed over 15 vehicles and pulled down many electric poles without any casualty.

The accident which occurred along the Ziks Avenue Awka involved a luxury bus marked: HAL 276YG, and about 15 other vehicles including many tricycles.

The luxury bus which was said to have been in distress shortly after off-loading some tubers of yam and other items at Nkwo Amenyi market, started what could be described as mass destruction from St. John of God junction to the front of the Post office opposite where it finally crushed a Toyota Corolla car belonging to one of the Federal institution in the state. Driver of the luxury bus was said to have disappeared immediately.

Confirming the accident, the state Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC), Mr. Sunday Ajayi stated that no death was recorded but that “nine persons, two females and seven males were rushed to the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku” by his men.

An eye witness, Mr. Oguejiofo Emeka, whose shop at number 241 Ziks Avenue was badly affected by the accident, said:

“The vehicle was said to have failed break at Nkwo Amenyi market after off loading some tubers of yam and other items at the market.

“Since the Enugu-Onitsha express way became deplorable, most of the heavy duty vehicles have been plying this old road which is not good. Now look at what it has resulted to. This accident, I am sure must have damaged items worth more than N100 million.”

Another victim, 24-year-old driver of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University shuttle bus, Odoh Gift, whose vehicle was squeezed beyond repair simply described what happened to him as “miraculous.

“I’m still in shock. I still cannot believe that I am still alive seeing this vehicle in this condition. What it means is that God is always with me.”

The Lagos State Association Of Master Bakers and Caterers Of Nigeria says it will on Wednesday increase the price of bread by 20 per cent.

The Chairman of the association, Prince Jacob Adejorin, who spoke at a press briefing in Lagos, lamented over the cost of producing bread and called on the Federal Government to look into the increased price hike of baking ingredients.

According to Adejorin, the price of baking ingredients has tripled without any corresponding relief to reduce the hardship on bakers.

He explained that a few months ago, a bag of flour was sold for N6,000 while sugar was sold for N7,000 but as at the time of the press briefing, a bag of Flour was N11,000 and Sugar was being sold for N15,000.

“Bakers can no longer cope with this situation hence the decision to increase the prices by about 20 percent,” he said.

Adding that:

“The present economic situation in the country has affected the baking industry as the second largest employer of labour in the country and bread being the most stable and easiest food to lay hands on anytime anywhere.”

“After serious consideration of the high prices of flour, sugar, diesel, salt, yeast, kerosine, nylon and series of Local Government levies, that the association are compelled to increase the bread prices as done to other consumer goods.”

He however, appealed to their customers and consumers to bear with them, as they promise to continue producing good quality bread at affordable prices.

“We also appeal to Federal Government to give some concessions to the flour millers in foreign exchange allocation and waving off some taxes and levies in order to stop this incessant increase in flour prices so as to keep bakers in business to avoid un-employment.

“We urge the flour millers to always have bakers in mind whenever any price increase is being considered as we are the end users of their products. All members and bread vendors must adhere strictly to the new price,” he added.

A 27-year-old pregnant woman suffered burns to 45 per cent of her body after she set herself aflame over her husband’s alleged extra-marital affair.

Cythia Njoki sustained injuries in her hands, abdomen, thighs and face after attempting to commits suicide in her house at Langalanga estate using Kerosene after her husband failed to explain where he spent the Saturday night, August 14.

Ms Njoki said her husband, a mechanic, failed to return home that night and when he came on Sunday evening, he kept on calling a woman she suspected was having an affair with him. In anger, she went into their bedroom, poured kerosene on her body and set herself alight.

“I had an issue with my husband after he failed to report home and on coming, he continued to call a woman he was having a relationship with. I was angry and burnt myself,” said Njoki who was in deep pain at Rift Valley Provincial Hospital.

Nursing officer in charge of the ward, Jenipher Mathenge said the patient was received on Sunday night at around 8pm in a critical condition.

“The patient was received in a very critical condition, with her hands, face, abdomen and thighs burnt. Her fingers are also totally burnt,” Mathenge said.

She said the Ms Njoki, who is six months pregnant also has breathing problems after she inhaled hot air.

They are investigating the status of the unborn baby after they noticed the foetus had irregular heart beat.

“The patient is pregnant and we are conducting further investigations to know the status of the unborn child,” she said.

The patient’s mother Mary Wangui said she rushed to the hospital immediately after she was informed about the incident but could not communicate with Njoki because she had breathing difficulties.

Ms Wangui said prior to the incident, Njoki had shared with her the problems she was going through due to the alleged promiscuity. She asked the husband what happened but he did not give a clear explanation, claiming to have received a phone call from a woman whom Njoki suspected was his lover.

Armed robbers have attacked a convoy of bullion vans belonging to the Central Bank of Nigeria in the early hours of Tuesday at Hawan Kibo along Jos – Abuja road.

Up to about two mobile police officers were killed in the operation.

According to The Punch, it was gathered that the bullion vans and their retinue of armed mobile policemen escorts had left Jos in the early hours of Tuesday enroute Abuja.

But somewhere along Hawan Kibo, immediately after a military check point, the armed robbers, wearing military uniforms, emerged from a bush and attacked a patrol team belonging to the Plateau State security outfit, “Operation Rainbow”, attached to Riyom local government, killing a mobile policeman on the spot.

It was further gathered that it was at this point that the CBN convoy also ran into the armed robbers who opened fire on it. The incident was said to happened at about 8.30 am.

The robbers engaged the escort in a shootout, leading to the death of the second mobile policeman, who was in the CBN convoy. The policeman was identified as Sgt. Anthony Jawa, from Mobile Police Squad (MOPOL) 8, Jos.

Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Tyopev Terna, who confirmed the incident said he was yet to receive the full report from Riyom divisional police. He said that some policemen were killed, but did not know the number.

According to multiple reports, this elderly woman pictured above and below was caught on Sunday Afternoon with a Dead “Month Old Baby” at Oshodi, Lagos.

An Eyewitness, Kadiri Ismaila made unverifiable claims about the baby being kidnapped before the woman was caught.

The Lagos state police command recently arrested a certain Fatima Williams, and her neighbour, Waliu Yusuf for allegedly brutalising a 16-year-old housemaid with a hot iron and electric cables.

According to PUNCH, the victim identified as Kemi was brought from Cotonou to work with Fatima Williams as a housemaid.

She was allegedly tortured last week Thursday by the suspect for not sweeping her compound located on Allen avenue, Lagos.

Kemi recounted the incident to PUNCH, read her below:

“On that day, Alhaja instructed me to sweep the compound. She also asked me to clean the windows and wash some clothes. I started with the washing and she went out. When she returned, she was angry that I had not swept the compound. Then she called the man (Waliu Yusuf) to beat me up.”

The suspect and mother of four admitted that she told Yusuf to beat the victim, adding that the housemaid’s stubbornness had increased her blood pressure. She also accused the girl of stealing from her and stated that she couldn’t handle her rudeness and behaviour anymore.

Meanwhile, Waliu Yusuf stated that he only wanted to scare the victim with the iron when it injured her.

The suspects were arrested and paraded at the Ikeja Police Division. Meanwhile the victim was taken to the Police Cottage Hospital, Ikeja, for treatment.

The state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni confirmed the arrest and said the suspects would be charged to court at the end of investigations.
