A 43 year old fake nurse, Uju Okonkwo, now in police net in Asaba, Delta State, has reportedly sold a three month old baby to a Lagos-based businessman for N500,000.

Also a fake lawyer, Ezurum Joseph, who claimed to have graduated from the Nnamdi Azikwe University (NAU ), Anambra State, in 2011 with registration number 39017, was arrested along with Okonkwo.

Over the years, Joseph has provided the hideouts where Okonkwo was using to harbour her victims and has stood as the woman’s solicitor.

The said fake lawyer confessed that he dropped out of school after he could not pass four courses, which prevented him from attending Law School. However, Joseph has since been defrauding unsuspecting members of the public.

Three female human trafficking victims, Chinyere Ude (19 ), Happiness Igwe (20 ) and Esther Frank (17 ), who were respectively in their advanced stages of pregnancy, were rescued from the traffickers’ den.

The girls disclosed that they were brought to the hideout by Okonkwo, a widow, who claimed to have worked at Chinonso Hospital, Nkpor in Anambra State, for the purpose of selling their babies after delivery.

Men of the Special Anti- Kidnapping Squad (SAKS) raided the hideout on Okpanam Road in Oshimili North Local Government Area of the state, after a tipoff that the three girls had been kept there and would soon deliver while their babies would be sold to the highest bidders.

The state Commissioner of Police, Zanna Ibrahim, who paraded the suspects with the pregnant girls in Asaba, said Okonkwo was nabbed after an intensive surveillance by his men. Gnashing her teeth on the parade ground, Okonkwo, who said she had no registered name for her organisation and had been in the game with the lawyer for over one year, confessed that she sold a baby for N500,000 to a Lagos – based businessman.

Ibrahim described the suspects as human traffickers. He said: “The matter before us is a complete case of human trafficking and other related offences. Only God knows how many innocent children they have sold into slavery, to unknown persons for money rituals.

“The suspects have started helping us in our investigations. ” The commissioner said the war against crimes must be won “to stop careless wastage of lives and property ”. Appealing to parents and guardians to be alive to their responsibilities in providing proper guidance to their children and wards, Ibrahim said the suspects would soon be arraigned.

A former speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Umar Na’Abba, yesterday fired back at former President Olusegun Obasanjo on his allegation that members of the National Assembly are corrupt.

Na’Abba, while fielding questions from newsmen in Kano said Obasanjo was one of the most corrupt Nigerians. He said the former president should explain to Nigerians how he became one of the richest Nigerians after leaving office, when he had virtually nothing before he assumed office.

Na’Abba said as speaker of the House of Representatives, he had cause to take Obasanjo on various expenditure offences he committed that the former president could not defend.

He said:

“Well, I don’t think there is anybody that is more corrupt in this country than the former president. I believe you are talking about former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

“As the Speaker, I took Obasanjo on various expenditure offences which he committed, which he could not defend and didn’t show any remorse. In fact, that is why sometime in 2002, the National Assembly tried to impeach him.

“So, he has not got the integrity to call anybody corrupt. This is a man who became the president with nothing, today he is one of the richest Nigerians. Let him explain to Nigerians how he acquired all the wealth,” Na’Abba alleged.

“I am aware that, during the tenure elongation attempt of Obasanjo, money was shared to the members of the National Assembly. It was alleged that the senators collected N50 million, House of Representatives members collected N40 million. But, I also know that it was not all the members that collected this money. Some of them collected, some of them did not. But, I am aware that money was shared,” he also alleged.

A 48-year-old man is in police custody after he was arrested for physically assaulting his teenage daughter.

Kamau Nyaga from Mwea, Kirinyaga county, Kenya is currently being held at Wang’uru police station following the accusation.

Kamau reportedly assaulted his 15-year-old daughter with a panga seriously injuring her after he saw her talking to a teenage boy.

Kamau, who is a farmer allegedly wounded his daughter three times using a panga after he saw her
speaking to a neighbor’s boy, her schoolmate.

The suspect was allegedly disciplining his daughter following the incident.

A neighbor alerted the police after hearing screams coming from Kamau’s home.

Mwea East OCPD, Kizito Mutoro, confirmed the incident saying Kamau was arrested on Saturday evening following a tip-off from a village elder.

The teenage girl suffered injuries on her right leg and hands with major cuts on her head.

Kizito said the girl was stable after receiving treatment at a local hospital and discharged.

“The girl was treated and released to go home after the doctors confirmed that she was in a stable condition,” said Kizito.

A man identified by his neighbours as a policeman, and his lover, suspected to be a member of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Anambra State has been reported dead.

The name of the policeman could not be ascertained but his lover’s name was given as Ifeoma, Punch Metro reports.

Ifeoma, a mother of five and the policeman, a father of three, were found dead on Sunday, in an apartment at Ezinifite Okpuno, Awka-South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

It was gathered that the policeman’s family lived in Lagos, while his lover’s family stayed in Awka.

It was also learnt that Ifeoma told her husband that she was going to attend a church vigil, but ended up at her lover’s house, which was nearby.

A source said, “The woman spent the night with her police lover until a labourer, who was to work for the policeman, came in the morning and discovered their dead bodies.

“The labourer then rushed out and alerted neighbours.

“The neighbours followed him to confirm the incident, before a relative intervened and locked the gate, preventing people from further going inside the apartment.”

Some neighbours interviewed by our correspondent said the victims might have been killed by generator fumes.

One of them said, “There was the sound of a small generator throughout the night in his apartment. But at about 4am, it went dead; maybe the fuel got finished.

“The policeman lived on the third floor of the house. As a policeman, he hardly stayed around, but each time he was around, everybody would know, because he would run his generator all through the night. Everybody called him ‘Officer’, but I think he was an inspector.”

Throughout, yesterday sympathisers gathered in clusters at the gate of the three-storeyed building, discussing the incident.

The building, it was gathered, belonged to the younger brother of the deceased policeman.

After a long wait by residents, who wanted to catch a glimpse of the dead bodies, security men, comprising local vigilantes, the police and men of the NSCDC, arrived at the scene and dispersed the crowd.

The security operatives later took away the corpses in an ambulance.

When contacted on the development, the state Police Public Relations Office, ASP Nkeiru Nwode, said, “With due respect, the man in question is not a member of the Nigeria Police Force and the woman’s identity is yet to be ascertained.

“I have not yet been fully briefed on the story. As soon as I get the details, I will communicate with you, please.”
