A 26-year-old Kenyan woman, Ruth Gakii, who was severely brutalised by her husband who works with the United nations, has called on the world body to make sure she gets justice, reports Capital News.

Speaking from a hospital bed at the Nairobi Women’s Hospital in Hurlingham, Gakii called for the world body to ‘come out and condemn’ the violence she alleges was meted out by her Papua New Guinea partner and father of her three-year-old son.

Gakii accused the man, identified as Alphonse, of having repeatedly assaulted her even when she was pregnant, complicating it and forcing her to undergo a caesarean section.

She claims that the man, with whom she’s embroiled is a custody battle, kicked and punched her without provocation, when he dropped her son off at her Jacaranda Gardens residence.

“He accused me of being disrespectful when I moved to change my son out of his wet clothes.
I reported the incident to the Kiambiu Police the same day but as far as I know, he remains a free man with my son in his custody.

He once slapped me in front of my mother because he didn’t find the meat the house help had cooked tender enough.
When the neighbours came to my aid on the day he beat me, he said he paid the rent and so could do as he pleased in his house. That’s not a man who’s afraid of the law.

I am not going to give up my son. I gave birth to him. Alphonse once even offered me Sh2 million for him and I refused,” Gakii narrated.

A commercial motorcyclist simply identified as Ishaya slumped and died while on a queue at the NNPC petrol station in Kubwa, Abuja yesterday December 17th.

Eyewitnesses say the father of two had been standing for hours and it was almost about to get to his turn to buy fuel when he slumped.

It is believed he slumped due to exhaustion. He was rushed to the Kubwa General Hospital where he was confirmed dead.

The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Court sitting in Ogba on Friday convicted six traffic offenders arrested by the convoy of the State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode in Ijora-Olopa area of the State on December 16, 2015, while driving against traffic.

Those arrested and convicted include Mrs. Adejoke Elemoro, Mr. Ogunlana Olatunji, Mr. Ganiyu Ayokuleyin, Mr. Ogunade Segun, Mr. Akinlabi Ahmed and Mr. Sunday Uzebor.

Trial Magistrate, Mobolaji Tanimola of Court 16 in Ogba, convicted the motorists after they pleaded guilty to a one-count charge bordering on the offence filed against them by the government. Magistrate Tanimola specifically ordered the traffic offenders to forfeit their vehicles which included four cars, one motorcycle and a tricycle to the government.

The convicts had pleaded guilty to the one-count charge accusing them of driving against traffic contrary to and punishable under Section 7 (b) of the Lagos State Traffic Laws of 2012.

In her judgment, Magistrate Tanimola ordered the forfeiture of the vehicles to government and a payment of N50, 000 each as an option of fine to a six-month imprisonment for driving against on-coming traffic, contrary to the laws of the State.

Both motorcyclists and a tricyclist arrested along with the motorists were ordered to forfeit their motorcycles and a tricycle to government together with the payment of N5, 000 and N30, 000 respectively as an option of fine to a one-month imprisonment each according to the laws of the State.

The Magistrate held that the decision of the Court would go a long way to serve as a deterrent to other motorists who have cultivated the bad habit of contravening the Lagos State Traffic Laws, 2012.

Against all odds Slyvester Mwendwa and Elijah Kimani of Mombasa County in Kenya have decided to marry the love their lives, Joyce Wambui.

When Mwendwa, 26 and Kimani discovered they were in love with the same woman, they struck an unusual deal that allows both men to live with Joyce and raise all the children she bears together.

David Okwembah of BBC reports that the marriage will only be accepted if they can prove polyandry is an accepted cultural practice in Kenya. Sadly, no tribe in Kenya accepts polyandry.

When contacted by BBC Focus on Africa, Mwendwa stated that he understands that his marriage might not be legal, but because he loves Joyce he would rather go into a contract with Kimani so as to avoid any conflict.

Daily Nation reports that a community police officer, Adhalah Abdulrahman confirmed that he saw the two men fighting over the woman in Mombasa county.

Joyce is reportedly a widow with twins who didn’t want to leave any of the two men.

“We discussed everything and they agreed that even if the woman gives birth they will raise the child as their own since they have been taking care of the woman’s children together and paying her rent equally,” Abdulrahman said.

An 18-year-old man, Joshua Ugbodu, has been sentenced to four years imprisonment by an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court sitting in Lagos State, for allegedly stealing N28,000 from one Amaka Nwosu.

The convict, a resident of Ikotun, a suburb of the state, had pleaded guilty to the charge and begged the court for leniency, saying hunger and poverty led him into the crime and that he would never go into crime again, but the Magistrate, Sule Amzat, declined granting him any mercy, and convicted him to ‘serve as a deterrent to others.’

After handing down the sentence, the Magistrate advised the convict to learn a trade in one of the training centres in the prisons to be self-reliant and contribute to the development of the society when he is released.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Sergeant Ihiehie Lucky, had told the court that the convict committed the offence on December 14, at No. 406, Ikorodu Road, Ojota in Lagos State.

He alleged that Joshua, a pick-pocket, was always loitering around Ojota area before he was apprehended.

A 55-year-old man, Elder Moses Ajuwa, has told a divorce court that his wife’s body odour has made it impossible for him to continue sleeping with her and wanted the court to dissolve his three-year-old marriage to his 30-year-old wife, Hauwa, on that account.

Apart from the smelly body odour, Elder Ajuwa also told the Grade A Customary Court sitting in Lagos State that his wife is also lazy and has failed to fulfil her obligations as a married woman and a disgrace to womanhood.

“I do not know why I must continue with this marriage. My so called wife can’t cook or keep the home.

She’s so lazy and dirty I can’t even sleep with her; the only thing she knows is to dress up and go to parties. I want a divorce.

I can’t continue with this marriage; it is better to be a bachelor than stay married to this excuse of a woman. She has failed at being a woman. I married her so she could take care of me after my first wife died; this is the worst mistake I ever made.

She can’t keep the home or cook. Every corner of our house stinks and unless I sweep, she doesn’t. Our rooms are filled with dirty laundry and I had to take my two children from my late wife to her family for proper care because I don’t want them in her care because she will turn them to slaves.

She is so dirty that I can’t even sleep with her; I buy food because our kitchen is too dirty to cook. Anytime I clean it up, she messes the house up again.

She never stays at home, once she gets one clean cloth and can dig her makeup out of the dung-hill she created in the room and a corner of the sitting room, she’s off. She rarely takes her bath. I have tried my best to make her change without success. Please separate us,” Elder Ajuwa told the court.

His wife, however, all the allegations levelled against her. In her defence, she told the court that her husband does not like her going out and is too autocratic.

“I am a small girl and he wants me to dress like an old woman. That I’m married doesn’t mean I should act like a dead woman. I want my marriage to work but my husband needs to relax his stance.

His other allegation is in bad faith because I have told him that the house is too big for me alone to maintain.”

The court has given the couple two months to see if they can resolve their issues and adjourned the case.
