Nigerian veteran filmmaker and journalist, Zik Zulu Okafor, has narrated how actor Saint Obi’s marriage distanced him from his friends and acting career.
Zik Zulu Okafor, a close friend of the actor who sadly passed away on Saturday, May 13 after a prolonged illness, in an article shared a detailed account of the tragic events leading up to Obi’s death.
According to Okafor, Saint Obi’s marriage to a financially successful woman significantly altered the course of his life.
He revealed that the woman was a high-ranking executive in a telecommunications company, and her siblings always viewed Obi as a “gold digger.”
He said that Saint Obi was constantly harassed by his wife’s siblings, which ultimately led to the dissolution of their marriage.
Okafor further disclosed that the actor’s health deteriorated in the middle of last year before he eventually passed away a few days ago.
The article read,
“His social life was blunted. Perhaps by his reticent disposition. His persona, two dimensional. To a distant public, he was upscale and cool. His manly bearing spoke loud. His onscreen image ironically amplified some idiosyncrasies; heroics, romantic adventures and traits that did not gel with the mortal privacy that eerily define his quiet and lonely life.
“Saint Obi, real name, Obinna Nwafor, was shy, almost bordering on timidity and insecurity. He cherished the pleasantly tranquil interactions among a few friends. He would vanish at any outburst that could upset the poise of such small meetings. As he repeatedly told me, he just wanted to live a cool, quiet and fulfilled life. But, has he lived this cool and fulfilled life he envisioned ? I have my doubts.
“I tell Saint’s story here with painful tears in my eyes; because he was a star, a super star whose life turned out a gleam of irony . Yet, it was this stardom that fetched him his much professed financially strong and powerful wife . And their wedding, that solemn ritual of love, would drastically alter the cause of his life and tragically yank him off the creative community that threw him up for the wife to capture and indeed conquer.
“Their marriage was at best a dramatisation of love. It was quick. He barely told us that he found a wife. Then, the marriage happened. It was something of a mystique, only those involved understood the histrionics that played out . None of us who were his closest pals, who walked with him through the crucible to the crest of his career in Nollywood, was invited. The distance between us and the guy I admirably called Saint of the Storm had begun. This gulf would widen with each year. We saw him perhaps once in a year after this marriage.
“And life actually seemed to have given him a fair shake of the dice. He dressed well, drove big cars and even his skin, in literal lingo, spelt wellness.
“The Saint would be blessed with three beautiful children. But not one occasion were his friends in Nollywood invited for christening or birthday. We were told that his wife was of the topmost hierachy in telecom giant, MTN . But even if their celebrations were designed to be a rendezvous of the elites of the technocracies that his wife chiefly belonged, you expected that Saint would reach out to a few of his fellow creatives, for even if they would herald his small beginnings, there could be no tinge of shame to it because we all have our journeys and our stories. And even at that, the actor or cineaste in Nollywood is by no means poor.
“But more tragic is the fact that his marriage did not only take away Obinna from his friends, it took him away from Nollywood. Saint stopped acting, absconded from his career and perhaps his calling.
“It would seem prognostic now. Yes, because I recall leaving my house in Lagos Mainland for his massive office in Lekki, Victoria Island, Lagos. It was about six years ago. There, I demanded to know why my friend abandoned our industry. He told me with his usual shy expressions that he wanted to focus on some other businesses and also to work behind the camera. Because his visage was unconvincing to me, I told him in stark terms, that whatever his new vision and pursuits, he must not abandon the trade that made him who he was.
“It took another three years for Saint to return to his homies. But when he did, some of the deeply disappointed ones sniggered behind him. This was because the simmering rumours of cracks in his marriage had hit home. And though secretive in his ways, he knew it was time to open up. And he did. “I do not know why my wife’s sibblings see me as a gold digger. They confront me, harass and fight me in my own matrimony. And my wife did nothing to stop them. I work hard, I earn my money. I have never depended on my wife”, he lamented, eyes blurred with tears. You could tell he was in deep pain. By the next visit, the Saint returned with a deep cut from knife on his left eye. His wife’s brothers, he said, scaled the wall fence of their house to attack him. They were captured by hidden closed-circuit television, CCTV, installed for surveillance and security, he revealed.
“He reported them at the police station and subsequently acquired a gun to defend himself. This effectively marked the beginning of the end of his marriage and perhaps Saint Obi’s long walk to a sad end. He moved out of his marital home to a new house to begin the reconstruction of his destiny, alone without his wife and worse still without his three beautiful children.
“Meanwhile, his wife went to the police to defend her siblings using her financial power to manipulate the cause of justice, Saint stated unequivocally. The wife also sued for divorce, not in Lagos, but in Ogun state. As Saint put it, “It was to make the journey difficult for me. But I will not bend neither will I break. I will fight with my last blood to take custody of my children. They love me and they know it will be hard for me to live without them. The divorce is not an issue. My marriage has long been over”, he said with a mix of courage and a quaky heart that betrayed his distress.
“About mid last year, however, Obinna took ill. But he told no one. He simply became scarce. He was in and out of hospital, we would later learn. He sold two of his three big SUVs to take proper care of his health and to acquire six camry cars he’d use for Uber. But his vanishing health continued unabated. He seemed to have a premonition of his own passing as he wept repeatedly about not seeing his children. He emaciated. Life took a grim picture. When I saw him by chance in January 2023, the dude called Saint looked 15 years older than his age. His macho cut had shrunk. His fat wallet was gone. What was left was only his fat will. His eyes seemed lost in their socket. This would be the last time I would see him.
“Saint snuck out of Lagos to hang in with his sister in Jos. He told no one. But a month ago, in April precisely, the once delightful actor who brought joy to many a home broke his icy silence. He called our mutual friend in US to give him a devastating message. He was on a deathbed, he said and wanted our friend to pray for him. “It’s not looking good, pray, pray for me”, he appealed passionately.
“His next call came on May 1, 2023. This time to his mentor, the man who made him a star with his productions, Zeb Ejiro, OON. He told him with a wavering voice that he had had three surgeries but was still in hospital in Jos. He averred again that his situation was not looking good, that he is also in a deep pain, distressed that he could not see his children. But still he begged him not to tell anyone about his ailment. Such was the life of this creative hermit, a lonely trouper. I was the first to hear the news of his death late on Sunday, May 7. Having confirmed it, I called Zeb Ejiro. “I have a very bad news my brother, Zeb”, I began.
“What is it, what is it, Zik Zulu?”, he asked anxiously. “A big star has fallen in Nollywood”. Zeb broke down in tears. I hadn’t said who it was. But sobbing helplessly now, he said, “Don’t tell me it is Saint Obi”. Sadly, Zeb was right. May his soul find peace.”

I shot his first movie, and he was the first person to discover my acting skills. We have done a lot together, we have fought and settled. I know everything about him.
“We still spoke yesterday, we spoke around 9:30, and he fell around 10 am. I was called immediately, and we drove him to the hospital, but he died before we got there.
“He called me after his birthday and asked me to come and take some of the clothes he used for his birthday shoot. I told him not to worry, but I didn’t know he was passing a message across to me.
“Yesterday, he sent money for a contribution we always have on Sundays. He sent it early, and I questioned his choice to send it early. His response was that we don’t know what will happen the next day or in the next minute. I didn’t know he was bidding me farewell.”
Popular media personality, Nedu, has taken a swipe a ladies who parade themselves as independent but depend on men to foot their bills.
Speaking in the latest episode of his Honest Bunch podcast, Nedu stated that many of these self-proclaimed “independent ladies” are actually mistresses of married men who finance their lavish lifestyles.
He further mentioned that some women receive money from multiple men, which they then use to start their businesses.
However, he acknowledged that there are women who genuinely work hard to achieve success without help from any man.
“Forget all this one that ladies are saying, ‘I’m independent’. My aunty, for you to open that shop, you collected money from five different men. And you are calling yourself independent. You are not.
“You should not be in that category. There are hard working ladies who toil and hustle for contracts. And when people want to disturb them, ‘You’ll have to sleep with me.’ They walk out of the office.” He said.

According to her, her social media accounts are primarily for business purposes, and since her husband is not part of her business, she prefers to keep him out of the spotlight.

Nigerian media personality, Daddy Freeze, has opined that any Nigerian who has less than N500,000 in all of their bank accounts combined is living in poverty.
Freeze made this submission during a recent Instagram live session he hosted. He said only those residing in a remote village are exempted from his stats.
According to him, anyone living in the major cities in Nigeria, particularly Lagos, Abuja and Port-Harcourt, with a total balance of N500k across all of their bank accounts is living below the poverty line in Nigeria.
The controversial on-air personality explained that they are poor because 500k cannot afford a good life in those cities.
According to a UK-based Nigerian lawyer @BolanleCole who shared the incident on Twitter, the woman recently informed her husband that she is no longer in love with him.
She also expressed her desire to end the marriage because she does not want to be in a loveless relationship, despite her husband’s support for her and her family.
He tweeted;
“Am No Longer in Love. Nigerian Woman Laments, Loses Interest in Husband after He Sponsored Her to the UK. The lady said she can’t explain why she does not love her husband anymore but would not want to remain in a marriage where there is no love. She appealed to people to advise her on what to do.
“The woman said it was her husband who told her to study nursing in Nigeria and partly sponsored her studies. The nurse added that he also catered for her needs and that of her family and was responsible for doing her travel documents. Things are happening.”
Nollywood actress, Esther Nwachukwu has opined that the 27-year-old Nigerian chef, Hilda Baci, who broke the Guinness World Record for the longest cooking time by an individual, was being overhyped.
Hilda, from Akwa Ibom State, broke the Guinness World Record for the longest cooking time by an individual on Monday, May 15, after she smashed the previous record of 87 hours and 45 minutes set by Indian chef Lata Tondon in 2019.
After four days of cooking non-stop, Hilda set a new Guinness World Record of 100 hours for the longest cooking time by an individual as she ended the cooking marathon on Monday night, May 15.
Her achievement was widely celebrated by Nigerians, including President Muhammadu Buhari and President-elect Bola Tinubu.
However, in a video shared on her Instagram page, actress Nwachukwu expressed her opinion that Hilda was being excessively praised.
According to her, Hilda’s accomplishment was not exceptional, as there are other Nigerians, including herself, who are capable of achieving the same feat.
“So, guys, it’s not only Hilda who knows how to cook. You guys are just praising Hilda. What did she even do? What did Hilda Baci do that you guys are praising her as if she’s the only person who knows how to cook in this world?
“Do you know that we have people in this country who know how to cook even more [than Hilda]? We can stand for 100 hours or even longer and cook nonstop. And that’s me. I can stand for millions of hours and cook non-stop,” she said.

Ghanaian socialite and social media influencer, Mona Faiz Montrage, also known as Hajia4Reall, has been extradited from the United Kingdom to the United States over her alleged involvement in a $2 million romance scam.
The 30-year-old, who was arrested in the UK on Friday, November 11, appeared in Manhattan federal court on Monday, May 15, for her alleged participation in a series of romance schemes targeting older individuals who lived alone.
Federal prosecutors claim that Montrage, along with a group of con artists from West Africa, carried out a long-running operation spanning from 2013 to 2019. The scammers assumed fake identities and utilized various communication channels, including emails, texts, and social media messages, to deceive their targets into believing they were in relationships with them.
Once trust was established, the victims were coerced into making money transfers under false pretenses, such as assisting with gold transportation, resolving fictitious FBI investigations, or supporting fake US Army officers in Afghanistan.
One specific case highlighted in court documents involved Montrage allegedly persuading a victim to send $89,000 through 82 wire transfers, claiming the funds would support her father’s farm in Ghana. The victim was further deceived with a tribal marriage certificate, leading them to believe they were married after a series of phone conversations conducted using Montrage’s real identity.
Prosecutors also allege that she received money from several other victims who were swindled by scammers within her network.
In total, Montrage amassed $2 million in funds that the group fraudulently obtained from victims, which were deposited into bank accounts she held in the Bronx and elsewhere, including one opened in the name of 4Reall Designs, a purported clothing company. She then allegedly laundered the stolen money to other members of the criminal enterprise, as stated in the indictment.
Manhattan US Attorney Damian Williams emphasized the devastating impact of such romance scams, particularly on older Americans. “These scams can be both financially and emotionally devastating for vulnerable victims.” He said.
Williams praised the efforts of law enforcement partners in apprehending Montrage and ensuring she faces justice in the United States.
Montrage has been charged with wire fraud, money laundering, receipt of stolen money, and conspiracy. If convicted on the top charge, she could face up to 20 years in prison.
During her court appearance, Montrage pleaded not guilty and was expected to be released on home detention to her aunt’s residence in New Jersey in the coming days on a $500,000 bond.
She will be monitored through GPS tracking using an ankle monitor, as confirmed by her lawyer and the prosecutor’s office.

Tonia, in a post shared on Facebook, shared the testimony of how God put her mockers to shame and blessed her with a husband.

She shared lovely photos of herself and her husband, with the caption,
“There are times when I gave up, there are times I felt left out, there are times I smile outside and sober in my closed door. And there are so many times I felt the lord has forsaken me and refuse to turn to my page,” she wrote in a Facebook post on Sunday, May 14, 2023.

“But I’m pregnant and I wanted to share it, it’s not me that ‘pregnant’ by myself. It was a collaboration and he’s alive and we’re not fighting so why not. So when we had the baby and were going to do Thanksgiving, it was a family.
“But before you see him again, it will be a while. Only maybe if we born another child again sha…cause my birthday is MY birthday. I don’t see the need to post him on his birthday because he’s not even on Instagram.
“So the person I want to wish didn’t dey there. So I should now be wishing him for you…why? He’s in my bed. He sleeps there. ‘Sweerie happy birthday to you’. Why do I have to go and tell millions of human beings that he’s doing a birthday?”

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have rearrested popular Nigerian socialite Ismaila Mustapha, better known as Mompha.
The anti-graft agency confirmed the development to Justice Mojisola Dada of the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, on Monday, May 15, 2023.
The EFCC counsel, Suleiman Suleiman, informed the court that the prosecution, in collaboration with its international partners, had secured the arrest of Mompha.
“The prosecution would like to bring to the knowledge of my lord that, in collaboration with our international partners, we have been able to apprehend the defendant. We plan to take him into custody and produce him before the court,” Suleiman said.
Justice Mojisola Dada, thereafter, adjourned the case until July 3 for the continuation of the trial.
In a statement, the commission mentioned that during a hearing on Mompha’s case on June 10, 2022, it informed the court that Mompha possessed another passport, aside from the one submitted to the court as part of his bail conditions.
The commission also informed the court that Mompha had used the same passport to travel from Ghana to Dubai on April 11, 2022, via Emirates Airlines, in violation of the court order.
Consequently, Justice Dada revoked the N25 million bail variation granted to Mompha and issued a bench warrant for his arrest due to his failure to appear in court.
Due to Mompha’s continued absence and the inability of both the prosecution and the defense to produce him in court, Justice Dada ordered on September 22, 2022, that the trial would continue in absentia.
On January 22, 2022, the EFCC had arraigned Mompha and his company, Ismalob Global Investment, on an eight-count charge of N6 billion laundering, to which he pleaded not guilty.
