Nigerian Man Indicted and Wanted for Defrauding New York State Out of More than $30 Million by Posing as Ventilator Seller During Height of the COVID-19 Pandemic
PHILADELPHIA – United States Attorney Jacqueline C. Romero announced that Chidozie Collins Obasi, 29, of Nigeria, was charged by Indictment with one count of conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud, six counts of mail fraud, and 16 counts of wire fraud, all stemming from a complicated, evolving fraud scheme that initially targeted Americans through a spam email campaign offering illegitimate “work from home” jobs, and then during the COVID-19 pandemic shifted to targeting U.S. hospitals and medical systems by offering non-existent ventilators for sale beginning in March 2020, and finally shifted again in June 2020 to using stolen identity information of American citizens to apply for and obtain Economic Injury Disaster Loans (“EID Loans”).
The Indictment alleges that Obasi perpetrated this fraud from Nigeria, with the help of co-conspirators in Canada and elsewhere. The defendant and his co-conspirators are alleged to have obtained more than $31,000,000 through this multi-faceted fraud scheme, with the overwhelming majority of that money – more than $30 million – coming from the State of New York for the intended purchase of ventilators.
The scheme alleged in the Indictment began in September 2018, with a spam email campaign that offered phony “work from home” jobs. When a person responded to the phony job offer, Obasi or a co-conspirator posed as a representative of a legitimate company, often a supposed medical equipment supplier based outside the United States, and offered the person a job as the company’s U.S. representative with responsibilities including collecting on outstanding invoices.
A co-conspirator in Canada then sent the new “employee” counterfeit checks purportedly from customers of the company, and the new “employee” deposited the checks, took a commission, and wired the rest of the money to a foreign bank account ostensibly owned by the fake company. As alleged in the Indictment, Obasi and his co-conspirators obtained more than $1 million in this manner.
The Indictment further alleges that in approximately March 2020, soon after the COVID-19 pandemic hit the United States and ventilators were in high demand, Obasi posed as a representative of an Indonesian-based medical supply company offering ventilators for sale, and claimed to have a large stockpile of ventilators manufactured by a German company whose headquarters was in Telford, PA.
The defendant allegedly convinced a medical equipment broker in the U.S. to broker sales of these non-existent ventilators, and ultimately deceived the State of New York into wiring more than $30 million for the purchase of ventilators that did not exist. Obasi continued to target other potential customers with this same scam, including hospitals.
Later, in approximately June 2020, the Indictment alleges that Obasi and his co-conspirators took advantage of the EID Loan program by using stolen identities of U.S. citizens to apply for and obtain more than $135,000 in EID Loan proceeds.
Obasi is presently a fugitive, and the United States is seeking to locate and arrest him. Anyone with knowledge of his whereabouts should contact their local FBI Office.
If caught and convicted, Obasi faces a maximum sentence of 621 years in prison, a five-year period of supervised release, and a $5,750,000 fine. Obasi also will be required to make full restitution of the more than $31,000,000 that he obtained by fraud.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Michael S. Lowe.
An Indictment, Information, or Criminal Complaint is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

Rachel, who had volunteered to make food for the house, alongside Phyna and Chichi, prepared rice for the entire house last night. However, while she dished the food, Bella seemed not pleased as she insisted she wanted beef while Rachel gave her chicken.
Rachel tried to explain that there were only four beefs in the soup, and people had already told her they wanted it before Bella came.
This ticked off Bella’s lover, Sheggz, who lambasted Rachel and said that by now, Rachel should have known his woman’s likes and dislikes.
Sheggz called Rachel stupid, and she retaliated by calling him and his family unprintable names.
In an attempt to defend her lover, Bella returned the food Rachel dished out for her, shoving it in her face, and the food poured, which threw the house into chaos.

A Nigerian man has asked popular gospel singer, Chioma Jesus, to advise her colleague Mercy Chinwo to slow down on posting her marriage on social media.
The concerned man, identified as Obieze CIDP, in a Facebook post, alleged that Mercy Chinwo, who recently got married to her husband, Pastor Blessed, has “been all over the place” since her wedding.
This comes after Mercy Chinwo posted a photo of the brand-new SUV her husband gave her for her 31st birthday.
In an apparent reaction, the man in a lengthy post said Mercy is now using her husband’s name, Blessed, in her ministration and that she may soon start giving her husband ‘glory’ instead of God Almighty.
“Dear Chioma Jesus, you’re Mercy Chinwo’s spiritual mother. I want you to advice her to slow down on the social media show off for now. I know she’s still new in the marriage lifestyle so the thing will be shacking her like pamy. She has been almost all over the place ever since she got married I understand that feeling too although I’m still single.
So as a veteran and well experienced woman in the marriage and music lifestyle, Instigate her to slow down as it’s not everybody that is happy for her. Mama the truth is, with the way marriage dey sweet your daughter she fit go sing worldly album o. Hold her o. She’s too happy and it radiates all over her. Judging from her recent ministrations, you could see she’s now infusing her husband’s name. Make she no go share God’s glory with Pastor Blessed o . Na that kind thing dey make God vex o.
I know she has posted the car her husband bought for her but please let her keep other upcoming gifts and blessings on low. The man will buy her house and other stuffs but let her not get too excited with vanity and forget ministry works. The aim is to lead souls to Christ through her singing prowess and grace and not show earthly achievements thereby drawing the attention of many doubters. I hope you understand. To us what she’s doing is good atleast they’re giving us content but then some people are feeling oppressed. If a Davido does what she’s doing it’s okay because he’s a secular artiste but a gospel minister doing it, hmmmm, the narrative will be twisted o. Make dem no say they’re flexing tithe and offering o. A wise is enough for the word”. He wrote.

Popular Nollywood actress, Foluke Daramola, has asserted that she cannot end her marriage over infidelity.
The actress, who is married to Olukayode Salako, said this in response to an Instagram post asking women if they would divorce their husband if they discovered he cheated.
“If your husband slept with a rich woman because of 20m and he transfers 7m to your account and later confessed to you will you divorce him?” The post read.
Reacting, Daramola wrote, “No need for 7 million, 5 million is okay, let’s do 50/50. I’ll forgive and tell you I say it’s well we have another deal like that. He should do it.”
Although her remark came off as a joke, she maintained that she can’t end her marriage due to adultery when a fan pointed out that the internet never forgets.
“Can u ever stop a man or even a woman from being unfaithful? U have to just look away a lot of times to sustain ur relationship or marriage, I have said it several times I can’t leave my marriage due to infidelity, maybe any form of abuse I might not be able to condone but looking for a faithful man???!! Abeg I don grow beyond that.” She replied.
Former Big Brother Naija level-up housemate, Diana Edobor, has said she was surprised when no male housemate approached her on the show.
The Edo-born housemate, who was evicted from the show on Sunday, shared her disappointment in a recent interview on Naija FM.
Speaking in the interview, Diana said she went into the house with the mindset that she’s beautiful, physically attractive, and finding a love interest in the house would be easy.
However, it came as a rude shock to her when no male housemate expressed interest in her despite being well sought after by men outside the house.
The 33-year-old project manager said, at some point, she thought Biggie was pulling a prank on her and told the guys to avoid her.
On her perceived relationship with Giddyfia, Diana said she started sharing a bed with him because of how cold it is in the Big Brother House but didn’t consider being in a relationship with him because ‘ashewo dey e eyes’.
According to her, some of the housemates acted more surprised than Amaka herself and she found it weird because they were the ones that put her on the chopping block in the first place. She further stated that all the housemates are ‘hypocrites’.
Faith Oyedepo, wife of popular clergyman, David Oyedepo, has advised single ladies to dress smartly so they can attract husbands.
The wife of the general overseer of the Living Faith Church Worldwide, who gave this charge during a sermon in a trending clip, urged ladies to maintain appealing appearances to attract eligible suitors.
According to her, dressing well will attract eligible partners to them rather than dressing like an old woman.
The clergywoman said if unmarried ladies are already looking like grandmothers now, how will they look when they marry and start birthing children?
“Young ladies don’t dress like grandmother when you’re believing God for a spouse.” She said.

In other news, Faith Oyedepo has said any woman or women’s organization that attempts to question the position of man in a family should be seen as one under a demonic influence.
Her comments come just few days after her husband said females who want to practice feminism should forget about marriage.
According to Mrs. Oyedepo, women are expected to be in subjection to their husbands in everything.
In her words,
“Any woman or women’s organization that attempts to question the position of the man in the family should be regarded as being under a demonic influence. God expects that just as the Church is subject to Christ in everything, even so, women should be in subjection to their husbands in everything.”
In a rejoinder post, she wrote ;
“Submission by the woman to her husband has to be done in love, not out of fear or threats. When it is rooted in love, it is perfect and brings God’s presence down in the home. Healing For Hurting Marriages”.
