Dreams Do Come True In Nigeria With The TECNO Light Up Your Dream Project.

Having hopes and dreams comes easy, giving life to them is the difficult part. A lot of research, planning and spending is involved, all of which takes a lot of time and effort.

Still, many people will gladly do all this in order to make their business dreams a reality. But very often, they complain about the problem of finance and how it prevents them from bringing their business ideas to life.

As Africa’s most preferred smartphone brand, TECNO Nigeria understands this. Which is why, since 2017, the brand has brought light to the hopes and dreams of young people by empowering 8 Nigerians and counting with one million naira each to establish their various businesses through the #LightUpYourDream campaign (LUYD).

Take for instance, Emeka Nnamani a poultry farmer with over one thousand chickens. Since emerging as one of the winners during 2018 edition of the competition, he and his mother are doing really great and have continued to grow their poultry business, supplying businesses and other small-scale poultry farmers in his community.

Another winner, Jeremiah Okon, who is a ginger farmer, wanted to be one of the biggest farmers in Africa. To do this, he needed to grow his business. After winning 1 million naira through the #LightUpYourDream project, he has been able to increase his farmland to 5 acres and his yearly yield of ginger to 1,500 bags a year.

There is also a fish farmer named Abiola Adesina who had difficulties maintaining his fish business. With the 1-million-naira prize money, he was able to increase his fresh fish output and sustain his business.

Yet another winner, Basiru Bolatito was a seamstress in the South West. Winning the 1-million-naira prize money made it possible for her to move to a bigger city and buy modern sewing equipment which has increased her ability to service bigger clients, employ others and invest.

TECNO is however not stopping at this. The 2019 edition will see even more Nigerian youths given the opportunity to make their dreams come true because 7 people will emerge winners by going home with 1 million naira each. Little wonder they say TECNO is for Nigerians. This year’s edition will be the third of its kind courtesy TECNO Nigeria.

This year, over 17,000 entries were received at the end of the competition. Top 5 entries were selected every week for 5 weeks where the best two were picked weekly via vote by the audience. In all 10 people were selected for the grand finale where they are required to pitch their dreams to a live audience. 2 winners will emerge, going home with 1 million naira each. There will be 5 additional winners who bought the TECNO Spark 3 in retail stores and received a raffle ticket that qualified them for draws across the regions.

The #LightUpYourDream3 (LUYD 3) grand finale will hold on the 31st of May 2019 and will be streamed live on Facebook.

For more information on how to be a part of the #LightUpYourDream3 or to view the Facebook live event, feel free to follow all of TECNO Nigeria’s social media handles. On Facebook the handle is @TECNOMobileNigeria while on Instagram and Twitter it is @TECNOMobileNG.

“When I woke up, I realized my kidney was gone” – Human Trafficking survivor, 23, shares her horrific experience in Lebanon

Fatou Badjie and Amie are two Gambian Human Trafficking survivors, and they both shared their horrific experiences in Lebanon and Egpyt respectively.

Immediately after she graduated from university, Badjie, 23, was approached by a close friend about employment prospects in Lebanon. The friend told her that there were job opportunities and if she decided to go there she’d earn a decent salary. She felt strongly that the friend would wish her nothing but success. She agreed to go to Lebanon.

In an interview with the Chronicles, Badije said;

“So I just jumped into it without asking questions. He came with a document and I signed it without hesitation,” she explains.

In the signed document, Fatou agreed to pay D3,000 as deposit before her friend would process her travel documents. To her, this was an opportunity to get her family out of poverty. I paid the money and the next day he brought my passport and visa. Everything was intact. The following week, I left for Senegal.”

Excited and hopeful, Fatou boarded a plane in the early hours of 26th June 2014, and flew more than 3500 miles to Beirut in Lebanon.

“I met an immigration officer who immediately took my documents and asked me to follow him. He took me to a small room where I found over 100 girls of different nationalities.”

One of the girls told Fatou that she was sold by human traffickers. Fatou became scared and confused. She stayed awake the whole night wondering what would happen to her the next day. In the morning, she confirmed she was in trouble.

“Some women came and started touching me and the other girls. One of them touched me and asked me to follow her. She told me that she had bought me and that I was her slave. I started laughing because I thought it was a joke.”

There was no joke and Fatou was actually trafficked to be bought for modern day slavery. The woman took her to Hamra, a neighborhood in Beirut where she laid down the house rules.

“She told me that my job was to take care of her husband who had cancer.”
Bathing the sick man, changing his clothes, carrying him on her back and feeding him became Fatou’s daily routine. I’d wake up at 6am and I would not stop working or go to bed unless the old man managed to sleep. I was so frustrated. I never thought I could go through this kind of trauma in my life.”

When Fatou got fed up, she approached her boss and told her she wanted to leave. “I told her that the contract I signed in The Gambia said I was coming to Lebanon to work in a restaurant and earn a living. She told me she spent a lot of money on me and I’d have to pay the money back before I could leave.”

Fatou was compelled to stay on even though she never received any salary for her work. But her conditions worsened after that conversation with her boss. She’d put a hot place of rice on Fatou’s back and eat from there. Other times she’d face more severe punishment than that.

One day she accompanied the boss to the hospital not knowing there was a plan to do an operation on her.

“When we went to the operations room I was scared. She told me to sit and wait. As I was waiting, I dozed off and I didn’t remember anything. When I woke up I realised that I was operated and my left kidney was removed, without my consent,” Fatou says.

It would later emerge that the boss’ sick husband was in need of a kidney and Fatou’s kidney was given to him.

Even with one kidney removed, Fatou’s nightmares continued. She was arrested and jailed after cutting her boss with a knife in self-defense. In jail, she was regularly beaten and the guards made several attempts to sexually assault her.

After 18 months in jail, she escaped and ran away to a sea side. Through the help of a fisherman she met, Fatou processed her documents and returned to The Gambia in April 2018.

Amie’s story:

Amie Jobe was trafficked to Egypt in December 2014 by a friend who worked for the immigration department. He told her that there were lot of job opportunities in Egypt and she’d earn up to $450 a month.

Once Amie accepted the offer, the officer processed her passport and introduced her to a group of Sierra Leoneans based in The Gambia. They took her to Dakar and handed her over to another agent who helped her to get an Egyptian visa.

“When I arrived at the airport in Cairo, my luggage was taken from me by two men who put me in their car and drove away. It was a 12-hour journey,” she tells The Chronicle. “When we arrived at our destination, they put me in a room and locked me in for about an hour.”

The men later confiscated her passport and told her that she was sold into slavery. For the next two weeks, she was locked inside the room. At the end of the two weeks, an Egyptian woman picked her from the agents’ house.

“The woman bought me. When I got to her house, she told me that my task was to take care of her three kids. From that day, the kids became my responsibility. She forced me to wake up as early as 5am to look after the kids.”

Three months later, Amie fell out with her boss after a heated argument which resulted to the boss hitting her. She wanted Amie gone, at 2am.

“I told her I wasn’t leaving without the salaries she owed me for the three months I worked for her. She ended up giving me $50 instead of $450 a month. $400 went to the Nigerian agents who received me in Egypt.”

Amie had to walk 90 kilometers in the middle of the night. “There was no car and I was imagining all kind of things. I could have been kidnapped, killed or raped.

Amie was indeed tortured by the police and sexually harassed by the Nigerian agents before she was able to return to The Gambia.

Today, both Fatou and Amie dedicate their time to the Network of Girls against Human Trafficking, an organization they set up along with other survivors of human trafficking to sensitize Gambians about the human trafficking and help combat it.

“There are so many issues that can’t be forgotten in this whole situation. I didn’t think that our own brothers and sisters would be so mean that they’d take us from our country and sell us out as slaves just for money. If you go through these things you can’t forget them,” says Amie.

The Gambia is listed by the US State Department as a Tier 2 country, and its 2018 Trafficking in Persons Report, the State Department said the Government of The Gambia did not fully meet the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking, though it was making significant efforts to do so.

“Gambian women are subjected to forced labor and sex trafficking in the Middle East, including Lebanon and Kuwait. Authorities have identified Gambian trafficking victims in Egypt, UAE, and Finland,” the US State Department said.

Nigerian girls reportedly sold at N210,000 as sex slaves in Mali – NAPTIP

The cries of some Nigerian girls sold as as sex slaves in Mali have been heard in the ECOWAS parliament by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP.

NAPTIP Director-General, Julie Okah-Donli, while speaking at a presentation to members of the ECOWAS Parliament, revealed that the Nigerian girls were being sold for between N210,000 and N240,000 to work as prostitutes, Vanguard reports.

NAPTIP is seeking an agreement between Nigeria and neighbouring West African countries to end the practice of Nigerian girls being used as sex slaves in Mali.

Presenting the report of the fact-finding mission to Mali, Okah-Donli said that after being sold, the girls were made to pay back between N1.08 million and N1.2 million, usually within eight months, to their madams.

She said,

“There are more than one million Nigerians residing in Mali. About 20,000 of these Nigerians are girls believed to be victims of trafficking and the number increases by 50 per day.

“Many victims are deceived to leave their livelihoods in Nigeria for greener pastures in ‘Mali”

“Some of the victims are abducted from Nigeria, including those that arrive in school uniforms.”

“On arrival at the border town between Burkina Faso and Mali, many of the girls are sold off for CFA 350,000 to 400,000; their new owners then make them pay back about CFA 1.6 million to CFA 2 million with one CFA being 0.6 Naira,” she said.

Okah-Donli said that as part of efforts to curb the trend, the agency recommended among other things, that Nigeria should develop a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Mali, Burkina Faso, Benin Republic, Guinea and Senegal.

She said,

“There is need for comprehensive sensitisation of rescued victims before repatriation and a comprehensive blueprint worked out for tracing, empowerment and rehabilitation of victims”.

Woman arrested for attempting to smuggle 39 wraps of Indian hemp into Kano prison (Photo)

The Nigerian Prison Service in Kano state has arrested a woman, Rifkatu Anthony, pictured, for trying to smuggle 39 wraps of Indian Hemps into the prison.

The details of the arrest was contained in a statement released by prison authorities.

Read the full statement below,

The Intelligence Unit of the Nigerian Prisons Service (NPS) attached to Kano Central Prison has intercepted a female visitor, Rifkatu Anthony, for attempting to smuggle 39 wraps of Indian Hemps into the prison.

The suspect from Badawa Quarters in Kano metropolis cleverly concealed the hard drug in harmless packs with the intention to deliver them to inmates in the prison.

Upon interrogation, Ms Anthony feigned ignorance of the Illicit substance in her possession claiming that the items were given to her by one ThankGod for delivery to the prison inmates.

The Controller of Prisons, Kano, Magaji Abdullah, had commended the officers and men of the command for their untiring efforts in ridding the service of the menace of trafficking.

Recently, the Controller General of Prisons, Ja’afaru Ahmed, approved the the dismissal of prison personnel for aiding trafficking (smuggling) and illicit drugs into the prison yard for prisoners.

The action of the controller general was part of a concerted effort by the administration to continue to maintain discipline and ensure that inmates in prison custody were only handled by those with the required rectitude to do so.

“There is no gainsaying that exposing inmates to the use of hard drugs is an anathema to the reformation goal of the Prisons Service as it does not only precipitate health complications but also constitutes security risk to innocent lives in and around the prison,,” the statement noted.

Mr. Ja’afaru therefore, warned that any officer caught aiding or failing to apprehend smugglers will be shown the way out of the service as they have no business being in a character reformation agency. He had assured the public that the management of the NPS would remain irrevocably committed to sustain the peace and calm now existing in prisons across the country in order to enhance reformation and rehabilitation of offenders in prisons custody.

Mark my word, I will be president of Nigeria- Governor Rochas Okorocha vows

Imo state governor, Rochas Okorocha, has said that the seizure of his Certificate of Return as the senator-elect of the Imo West senatorial district, is only getting him prepared for his grand political dream which is to become the president of Nigeria.

The governor who accused the elite class of ganging up against him, said that those who want me to go to prison will go to prison before me.

His words ;

“I tell you, I am the most criticised person in Nigeria today. I don’t know why the entire elite hate me with cruelty. My Senate ambition is still a battle. More than 30 people have joined the suit to fight me. All these, I will overcome. They are only preparing me for the glory ahead.”

Mark it, I will be president of Nigeria. I said this on this altar so that the kingdom of God will rise against those fighting to stop me. Also, those who think they will put me in prison will go to prison before me. They don’t want me to be at the National Assembly, but I will be there. I know I am the last man standing, but I will not give up.”

Dencia blasts RMD over his boobs and Butt lift post.

Cameroonian singer and whitenecious boss, Dencia has slammed Nigerian Actor, Mofe Damijo over his post on women going under the knife to impress society.

RMD had pointed out that seeking validation from others does not guarantee true happiness and he seemingly likened women going under the knife to enhance their looks and body to that statement.

RMD had written;

“Having been there and done that, I can tell you for free that weight loss, weight gain, butt enlargement, boob lift, marriage, buying/building your own house, having kids, wearing expensive clothes and shoes CANNOT make you truly happy.

Mostly, the things we do to show others we are beautiful, made, tough and/or connected are things that magnify our insecurities. A man who is secure in himself has no urge to flaunt wealth, I’m yet to see Alh. Dangote post a picture of his “machines” or of him “chilling in his private jet”.

A woman who is secure in her looks has no urge to go under the knife for enhancement, think Michelle Obama.

True happiness comes from knowing who you are (self discovery) and loving yourself, “even though…” Anyone who can live without caring about the validation of others is the one who has found true happiness.”

While a cross-section of his fans and colleagues in the entertainment industry agreed with his words, Dencia however had her own counter-view and she proceeded to the comment section to slam the veteran actor.

She wrote;

RMD is older than my dad, i mean 10 years older, i will be so embarrased if my dad was on the internet talking like this.

All these folks steady losing cool points cuz of Social media.

Parents need to stop this Social Media bants. Why are you 57 a man commenting about boobs and butt lifts ?

Truth is he ain’t lying, cosmetic surgery does not make you feel better about yourself, that’s why people keep going and doing it over and over, but still i don’t want it to be him talking like this.

‘Butt enlargement, boob lift, cannot make you truly happy’ – Actor, RMD says

Actor RMD says

Nollywood Veteran actor, Richard Mofe-Damijo recently took to his social media page to write on finding true happiness.

In his piece, the famous actor pointed out that having some set goals such as weight loss, marriage, having kids, getting a butt enlargement or a boob lift cannot guarantee true happiness.

@Onaolapofarouq: Thanks for the search. Adewura is dead. “Negligence by the relevant authorities, as usual. An unnecessary death due to an open manhole during a storm. Manhole was left open but fully covered with flood, she and the bike man missed it due to bad visibility. She wasn’t aware.”

BBNaija Nina’s DM leaks again, plans fake Bentley gift for her birthday (Photos)

Former Big Brother Naija housemate, Nina’s Direct Message has leaked again and it reveals how the reality star plans to rent a Bentley and fake buying it for her birthday.

Her DM was leaked and it revealed her chat with a friend where she requested the number of a car hire company so she could rent a Bentley for a month and deceive her followers and the public that she acquired it for her birthday.

This certainly must be an embarrassing situation for the model as the chat details her plan to break the internet with the news that she bought herself a Bentley for her birthday.

Looking at the conversation, the person she was chatting with also encouraged her to package it very well so nobody will find out like Blessing Okoro who got busted recently for allegedly faking purchase of her home.

Funnily, Nina already knew the title of blog posts that would be made once the news hit the internet as she she wrote;

“Nina buys Bentley as birthday gift”.

How a Nigerian Doctor saved a ‘dying man’ on Azman Airline Flight

A Nigerian Doctor by the name of James King is being praised by several people online for saving the life of another passenger who collapsed on board a flight from Kano to Lagos on Saturday, May 25th. Narrating the incident, Dr. King stated;

“Its getting clearer now, …why I was born.

I just saved a life who would have possibly died midair in the aircraft I was a passenger in.

I was on seat 14F of BOEING 737-300 of AZMAN AIR from Kano to Lagos.

Suddenly, his head dropped.

A passenger on seat to my far left on the other side of the aisle.

The Indian man sitting besides him screamed and called the attention of the air officials.

The Indian said it seems the man passed out.

We were still several miles above sea level.

Far from Lagos our destination.

As it is with my nature, I was listening to some music with my earpiece on board this flight. I was rocking myself head forward and backward, my hands slightly moving up to the powerful music of SHOW US MERCY by Will Adiks.

The movements to the unconscious passenger got my attention.

I removed my earpiece.

In 5 powerful long strides I got to the dying patient.

To the Air Hostesses, “I am Dr James King. I want to take over. He is deteriorating fast.”

The Air Hostess said, “Ok sir. Go ahead.”

And she gave me way.

I quickly checked his pulse around his radial artery. It was small volume, irregularly irregular rhythm.

I shouted, “Any doctor, nurse or paramedic here?”

No response.

All the other passengers on board were staring at me with a forlorn look.

As if there was an impending danger to all of them.

I turned to the immaculately dressed 3 Air Hostess around me. “We can save this life together. His life depends on us now.”

I turned to one of the hostesses, “Can you please get us all the medical boxes and kits in this aircraft”

She responded, “Ok sir” and walked fast away.

I asked two other male passengers to help me lift the dying man from his seat to the aisle between the airfraft seats, …so I can have more space to start my intervention on him.

We placed him on the ground.

I immediate positioned him supine and also freed his respiratory airways by tilting his head backwards a bit.

I again asked, “please can I have any cloth or anything to support his neck.”

The air hostesses removed their top suits and handed them to me.

I was encouraged.

I folded two of them and placed them under the neck the of dying man.

At this point the dying man was already having rolling up eyes, …all white.

I listened to his apex heart beat.

It was very weak and faint.

I knew in seconds, he would be dead if I don’t do something fast.

I commenced CPR (Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation) on him.

He responded.

Then he began to convulse uncontrollably.

At the top of my voice, I shouted “Can someone get me Diazepam please?”

An air hostess ran somewhere to get it.

It was 30 minutes before landing.

If nothing was done fast he will die in less than 10mimutes.

I repeated CPR again.

And again. And again….

I listened to the heart using my stethoscope.

Some mild activity commenced.

I turned to the chief air Hostess, please call Murtala Mohammed Airport and tell then to arrange an Ambulance before our landing.”

She said, “Right away” and began to rush toward the cockpit to inform the Pilot to do so.

When I was sure the patient’s ventilation improved a bit, I quickly withdraw 5mg of Diazepam and gave him straight intramuscular on his buttocks.

Returned to the supine position again.

Commenced CPR.

Checked his radial pulse.

I then announced to everyone that… “I AM buying time. He will survive.”

I was on the floor of the aircraft kneeling around him.

Monitoring every single thing I can pick from his reflexes.

The chief air hostess came back.

I asked her, “How many minutes do we have more to land?”

She said, “in 5 minutes.”

I again announced to everyone on board, “HE will survive.”

Then there was a loud sudden noise in the aircraft.

Then we landed on the runway.

Three men/passengers carried him.

We evacuated him very fast out of the plane.

At the foot of the plane there was no ambulance waiting.

I was visibly angry and now shouting at the top of my voice to all the airport officials.

That the ambulance is at the other side.

In a rage I said to them, “This is wickedness. We did all our best with God’s help to keep this man alive for 30 minutes and you people could not even get an Ambulance to wait here?”

Someone suggested that he should be taken in one of the Toyota Hilux van.

I said “No, it will kill him before we get anywhere”.

I screamed, “Any clinic in the airport?”

That was when their brains came back to default reset and they chorused, “Yes.”

I said to the good men still carrying him let go.

That was when we rushed him to the clinic you are seeing in the photo of this post.

Its the airport clinic that is close to the Arrivals of the Murtala Mohammmed airport, Lagos.

I explained everything I did and the medications given to the doctor on call.

She took over.

Then I walked out and looked up to heaven and said, “I know You are involved in this. Thank you Lord.”

Addendum:
I actually came to Lagos for a humanitarian programme, an absolutely FREE Medical outreach that is poorly funded meant for the sick and abandoned Prison inmates at Kirikiri Prison.

We are all born to save lives.”
