Three Nigerian scammers who befriended many of their victims on dating sites have been slammed huge prison sentences by a Mississippi court, after making tens of millions of dollars from their schemes.
Oladimeji Seun Ayelotan, 30, was sentenced to 95 years in prison; Rasaq Aderoju Raheem, 31, was given 115 years; and Femi Alexander Mewase, 45, got 25 years behind bars.
A court in the Southern District of Mississippi had, in February, found them all guilty of crimes, including mail fraud, wire fraud, identity theft, credit card fraud and theft of government property.
Ayelotan and Raheem were also found guilty of conspiracies to commit bank fraud and money laundering.
Dating back to at least 2001, the scammers were involved in multiple internet fraud schemes, resulting in losses in the tens of millions, according to the Department of Justice.
It claimed that they would befriend women on dating sites, establish a romantic relationship and then either get them to send money or have them participate in fraud schemes, usually without the victim’s knowledge.
The unsuspecting women would sometimes be required to cash counterfeit checks and money orders; use stolen credit card details to purchase goods; and use stolen personal information to take over victims’ bank accounts.
They were also apparently used to launder money via Western Union and MoneyGram, and re-package and re-ship goods obtained fraudulently.
A whopping 21 defendants have already been charged in this ongoing case, 12 of whom have pleaded guilty to charges involving conspiracy and 11 of whom have been sentenced.
The three Nigerians were among the six extradited from South Africa by US Department of Justice in 2015 to face charges of running a series of scams against gullible Americans over the past 16 years.
Fourteen others resident in the US were also arrested to face trial in Gulfport, Mississippi, on nine federal charges, including conspiracy to commit identity theft, wire fraud, bank fraud, theft of US government funds, and conspiracy to commit money laundering.
The indictment states that since 2001, the accused were part of a string of scams against Americans, facilitated by internet communications.
These include the long-standing 419 scheme, whereby a massive windfall is promised once a small number of payments have been provided, but the Department of Justice claims it went much further than that.
The team was also accused of running romance stings to bilk the lonely of funds, shipping fraud, running fake work-from-home businesses, check fraud, and plain-old hijacking of other people’s bank accounts and credit cards to divert funds.
Global fraud continues to grow, thanks to the internet and an increase in the use of both anonymising technology and robots designed to mimic human behaviour. (NAN)
On Saturday, 20th May, 11-year-old Chika Nkwazema, was allegedly bathed with hot water by her neighbor, Mrs. Promise Obinna at Mbieri in the Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State.
The little girl has asked the Imo State Commissioner of Police, Chris Ezike, the state Governor, Rochas Okorocha, and the Inspector General of Police, Muhammed Idris, to ensure that the woman does not escape justice.
The woman allegedly poured hot water on her, scalding her back, laps, breasts, hands, face and buttocks after her children and Chika’s siblings had finished fighting.
Before the victim’s mother, Mrs Ngozi Nkwazema, who went to the Orie Mbieri police station to report the incident could return to the compound with some policemen, the woman, her husband, Obinna, who is a tricycle driver, and their three children had packed their bags and fled the compound.
Punch Reports;
On Friday morning in her hospital bed in the children ward of the Federal Medical Center, Owerri, Imo State, the girl said that the woman deliberately poured the hot water on her body.
The girl who is in primary six asserted that her neighbour’s act was wicked and stated that if not for God she would have died.
The child said that all her body was paining her, adding that she had lost appetite for food.
Asked what she would want the government to do to the woman, Chika said “I want the police to jail her. I did not do her anything and wasn’t part of the disagreement. I want the number one policeman and the governor to put her in jail”.
The doctor in charge of the girl’s case, Udechukwu Chukwuebuka, told our correspondent that it will take time before Chika will be back to her feet, owing to the degree of injuries she sustained.
Asked why full treatment had yet to be commenced on the girl, the doctor said that the family had yet to pay for the medical diagnosis that was expected to be carried out on her.
The mother of the girl, Ngozi, who is a widow, said that she had used the money given to her by few spirited individuals on the treatment on the girl since the five days they arrived the hospital, hoping that people will come to her aid for other medical expenses.
The state police Public Relations Officer, Andrew Enwerem, said that the commissioner of police, Chris Ezike, had ordered the immediate arrest of the culprit.

Here’s a beautiful story of how a man, Mr. Koko Dan built a beautiful 3-bedroom flat for his neighbor who has been married for 30 years without a child.
This happened in Calabar. Read below as shared by Ifere Paul.
Mr Ebugwe Obu has been married to Mrs Agnes Obu for the past 30 years. They have been so married since they both fell in love 3 decades ago. These couple has passed through the worst of temptations and trepidations. But the unity in their married vows has kept them going this far.
Mr Ebugwe Obu and Mr Agnes Obu are peasant farmers. They toil to survive. Often, they survive with a meal a day, and sometimes palm kernels, or corn. They have remained faithful to each other. A testament that has kept their 3 decades marriage childless.
They have lived in a hut made of red mud and raffia mats which they constructed with their bare hands for as long as 45 years now recently.
They don’t entertain guest, and had no friends, apart from a few customers who come to their house to buy various farm produce in pennies that can fetch a meal or two.
The luxury of a sofa, bed, radio, television, and other modern technologies are only tales by moonlight to their ears.
Married for 30 years without a child, these two lovebirds clings to each other for survival. Pittance is a way of life for them.
A fence away from their red hut is a magnificent house. Built with the greatest of materials only seen and described by other villagers while on the way to the farms. Mr Ebugwe and wife will only watch in awe as the house is being built.
The house owner’s curiosity led him to visit Mr and Mrs Ebugwe Obu. Where their sad story was told him.
Mr Koko Dan, the new neighbor of Mr and Mrs Ebugwe extended a hand of friendship and good neighbourliness, and has built a three bedroom apartment for Mr & Mrs Ebugwe.
Speaking to Koko Dan, during a visit to my office to invite me to the official handing over of the keys ceremony to Mr & Mrs Ebugwe, Mr Koko Dan told me that “if these couple had a child after 30 years of marriage, he has no doubt that their child would have built a house for them.”
In other to increase their goodwill, Koko Dan has named the house Senator John Owan Enoh Villa. And has invited Sen Owan to present the keys to the couple.
Help me shout a hearty thank you to Engr Koko Dan for his selfless humanitarian service to these people. May God bless you for this awesome gift to these poor people.

Popular comedian and Nigerian Actor, Ayo Makun recently had a bitter banter with one of his Female fans who flew for over 39km to take a selfie with the Comedian.
Apparently, AY is currently in Dubai for the Wedding party 2 movie shoot… and the Female Fan who is also Dubai asked for permission to gate crash the venue of their shoot, so they can take selfies together.
The Comedian agreed, and the female fan flew down to the venue of the shoot only to be met with disappointment.. AY had already left the venue.
The Female fan then took to her instagram to call out the comedian for disappointing her, even after he approved for her to come.
Then AY clapped back. he wrote;
“So in your wildest dream, I am supposed to wait all for selfie and leave the job that brought me to Dubai,” the actor fired back, adding, “Thanks for letting me know that I disappointed myself. Stay blessed.”
The exchange has many people scratching their heads, with many people pondering the rationale behind travelling over 30 kilometres just for a selfie.
“Everything for Nigerians na by force …. How many american celebs dey reply personally with their location … He replied and you still expect him to be waiting for you because it is your money that sponsors 51% of his AY Live event abi … Too many funny people from this our country,” Instagrammer @idreamincolourrs said.
Days later, AY took to Instagram to apologize to the lady, and made it known that his fans are important to him and that he does not take the relationship between him and his fans with levity.
He also revealed that the reason for his absence at the hotel was because he had to be in another location for the shoot of “The Wedding Party 2″.. He further disclosed that he thinks celebrities are easily judged by the public, noting that sometimes they may not be in the mood to be social.
He concluded by giving the Fan a VIP ticket to his new movie, “10 Days in Sun City” to be premiered later in June.
He wrote;
“Who am I not to be readily available for a selfie with you? I only felt bad about you passing judgement on me without knowing that I had to leave Armani Hotel in Dubai to be on another location for ‘The wedding Party 2’ shoot.
God willing when next I am in Dubai I will make the same miles you travelled to make it up to you and your friends. Kindly ignore all the negative comments about you being described as ‘jobless’ on the blog. I have come to realise that people will always talk about you, either for good or bad, what is important is the content of your heart.
I am fully committed to loyal and true fans like you. The more fans we have the more popular we become in the business. So I have every reason be as nice as possible to people like you who made us become what we are by attending our shows, seeing our movies and supporting all creative endeavours.
But lets also quit passing quick judgement on celebrities. We must also understand that sometimes celebrities have bad days and don’t feel like being social. Famous people are human too, and they’re not always in the best mood.
However, being congenial is pretty much part of our job, so we’ve got to at least avoid treating our fans terribly.
Trust me to improve on myself…. And if you are in Nigeria on June 17, I do have a VIP Invite for you to be at the premiere of 10 Days In Sun City. (Enough selfie with me and the bigger stars that will make your day). One Love!
Note: Those of you who think my number one fan is jobless… DM her for your Dubai Employment Visa (if una get work like her una go comment less).”

Punch is reporting that the Chaplain of The church under the Lagos State Ministry of Home Affairs was sacked after he refused to “anoint” the wife of the Governor First during their anointing service.
There is anger at the Chapel of Christ the Light, Alausa, Lagos State, after the Presiding Chaplain, Venerable Femi Taiwo, was sacked by the Governing Council allegedly on the order of the state Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode.
PUNCH Metro gathered that Taiwo got the sack on Monday, May 15, without any query or official reason stated in the sack letter.
He was said to have been ordered out of his official quarters where he lived with his wife and two children within 24 hours of receiving the letter.
Despite pleadings from church leaders and other reputable elders in the church, the government was said to have insisted that the cleric must leave the church.
Some church members reportedly contributed money to buy gas cooker, and other household items for the family as they vacated the vicarage.
Investigations by our correspondent showed that Taiwo had angered the Governor’s wife, Bolanle Ambode, who had visited the chapel on Sunday, May 14, when the church held an anointing service.
The church is under the Lagos State Ministry of Home Affairs, while the Office of the Lagos State First Lady supervises church.
Church members were said to have filed out to receive anointing oil during the May 14 service without any preference given to Bolanle, who waited endlessly with her entourage.
She was said to have later moved to be anointed and moments later, stormed out of the church, as some of the women leaders ran after her.
Bolanle, who was reported to be visibly angry, allegedly shunned entreaties from the women, which included the wife of the presiding chaplain.
The cleric got the sack the following day.
The directive was issued in a letter dated, May 15, 2017, and signed by the Chairman, Governing Council of CCTL, Mr. Olugbenga Solomon. The letter also ordered the Assistant Chaplain, Very Rev. Ayo Oyadotun, to take over with immediate effect.
A church member, who witnessed the drama and begged not to be identified, said ,
“The church had declared seven-day fasting after we lost two prominent members.
“The Sunday service, which was declared as anointing service, was supposed to end the fasting.
“The First Lady, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode, was present with her entourage. She comes to the church once in a while.
“When it was time to be anointed, the cleric asked people to come forward, adding that it was optional. Three people stood at the stage to anoint people. They included the chaplain, the presiding chaplain and one other person.
“People started stepping out one after another. The governor’s wife, after some time, also stepped out and was anointed.”
The source said within a few minutes of taking the oil, Bolanle, who felt disrespected, stepped out with her entourage.
Another member of the church said,
“As she stepped out, it was obvious that she was angry.
“The president of the women’s fellowship and the pastor’s wife ran after her. She shunned them, entered her car and zoomed off.
“When we came to the church on Tuesday, we heard that Venerable Taiwo had been sacked. We were told that he was sacked because the the governor’s wife didn’t get the anointing oil first and she felt disrespected.
“The man that signed the letter is also a civil servant,” the source said.
The governing council is said to be made up of members of the church and some appointees of the government.
PUNCH Metro learnt that Taiwo still had two years to spend as the presiding chaplain when he was fired.
The source said some church members quickly bought household items for his family as they vacated the church premises on Thursday.
He said,
“The children went to school on Thursday without knowing that they would not be staying in the vicarage that evening. Church members bought bed and other household items for them because they did not have their own property.
“The members said their pastor did not offend them, and protested the sacking. The governing council members, however, said they should forget it because whatever came from Alausa was final. Most of the church members are civil servants who can’t talk too much.”
Our correspondent reached out to leaders of the church, including Oyadotun, who refused to comment.
However, one of those that confirmed the incident, begged not to be named.
He said the reason Taiwo got the sack was not stated in the letter, adding that the action was not unconnected from the visit of the wife of the governor.
He said, “Let me be straight with you, in the letter there was no reason for the sack. Whatever you are hearing are what members of the church believed could have happened. And there was indeed a protest by the church and the governing council assuaged them on the sacking.
“There was nothing official in that sacking. No investigation, no query, nothing. We had an anointing service on that Sunday. The following day, the venerable was served the sack letter.”
When PUNCH Metro reached out to Taiwo, he said he did not want to comment.
He said, “If you have any enquiry, direct it to the church. But one thing I can say is that I have tried as a pastor to live above board. It will not be right engaging the church or the government on the pages of a newspaper.”
The state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Steve Ayorinde, said, “The former chaplain had been queried a number of times in the past for conducts unbecoming of his office. The culmination of various indiscretions led to the Governing Council of the church issuing yet another query that led to his being relieved of his post.
“This has got nothing to do with the First Lady. The Chaplain is looking for an excuse to cover his insouciance. It’s nothing but cheap blackmail.”
The second daughter of Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, Uju Okorocha-Onwuka was recently appointed as a member of the board of the Federal College of Education, (Tech), Omoku, Rivers State (See picture below).
But her father, the governor, Rejected the appointment, claiming he wasn’t aware of the appointment. He called on whoever is behind the appointment to withdraw it because his daughter does not need the appointment.
Uju is married to Dr. Uzoma Awuka, the son of Nigeria Minister of Education State, exVC of IMSU and former Secretary to Imo State government under Okorocha, Prof. Anthony Anwuka.
Find Below a statement signed by Sam Onwuemeodo, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor.
GOVERNMENT OF IMO STATE
PRESS RELEASE
RE: THE APPOINTMENT OF MRS UJU ROCHAS ANWUKA INTO THE BOARD OF FEDERAL COLLEGE OF EDUCATION (TECH) OMOKU
-His Excellency Governor Rochas Okorocha Rejects the Appointment.
The attention of the Governor of Imo State, Owelle Rochas Okorocha has been drawn to the publication listing one of the daughters, Mrs. Uju Rochas Anwuka as a member of the Board of the Federal College of Education (Tech), Omoku.
And it is important to swiftly state, with every sense of concern, that the governor had read about the appointment like every other Nigerian because he was never consulted or briefed on the appointment and that is why the whole thing looks suspicious.
To the governor, the appointment was obviously not done in good faith. Whoever was the brain behind the appointment did so out of unbridled mischief. Otherwise, the person behind the appointment would have had the courtesy of either informing the father or the mother.
The truth of the matter is that the governor’s daughter does not need the appointment. The governor has therefore asked whoever was behind the appointment to withdraw it since the daughter would not have needed the appointment, even if he had not become governor.
Indeed, the governor has the feeling that whoever was behind the appointment did it with something else at the back of his or her mind, otherwise the person would have acted well his or her part by informing him or the mother or even the daughter herself.
The daughter and the entire family reject the appointment.

Addressing newsmen, Mustapha Maihaja, the Director-General of NEMA, said the agency in collaboration with IOM was working to ensure that Nigerians stranded in Libya were brought back home.
“We are here to ensure that they are well received. We feed and give them money to enable them get back to their respective destinations,” Maihaja said.
The director-general, represented by Suleiman Yakubu, the Zonal Coordinator, South West, NEMA, however advised Nigerian youths to develop the mentality of staying back home and helping to build the country.
“Those of them who have gone and come back will testify that it is better here, especially now that we are in the era of the change mantra. A lot of initiatives have been put in place by the present administration to ensure that life is better in Nigeria,’’ he said.
Maihaja added that various state governments, particularly Edo State had initiated skills acquisition schemes to help rehabilitate and reintegrate the returnees into the society.
According to him, a similar scheme which is being put in place by the IOM will take off in July, as the organisation has already informed other stakeholders about the development.
Two of the returnees who simply gave their names as Owen and Ehis, told NAN that they spent more than seven months in detention in Libya after they were sold into slavery by militias.
They thanked the Federal Government for facilitating their return to Nigeria and pleaded with the government to assist them in getting their lives back.
NAN reports that the returnees who were given a stipend of N17,100 each were later transported to the Jibowu Park to find their way to their respective destinations.
NAN recalls that two batches of 258 Nigerians voluntarily returned from the North African country on May 11 and May 16 respectively.
Yesterday, we brought you reports about the UNIBEN student who stabbed her colleague in the head 5 times and then left her to die..
This photo is of two undergraduate students of University of Benin in the Ekewan campus of the University. Becky is said to have stabbed Heritage in the head and Heritage is at the moment battling for her life. While some say it is over a boy, others say it is over a wrapper.
Now, we have got photos.. Heritage is currently hospitalized after she was stabbed in the head by Becky, her friend. Heritage’s sister is claiming the argument started over a wrapper actually, before it escalate quickly into a brutal fight, and then stabbing.
Narrating what went down, she wrote;
“God is Faithful but justice must be served Watch the kind of friends you keep oh! My sister was stabbed in her head five times by Becky Isoken Oseye – 200 level Mass communication student
“After the stabbing she began to shout ‘die die die: and Uniben security was doing nothing about it. Instead of carrying the culprit out immediately, they allowed her brush her teeth, eat, bath and then catwalk to the security office.
“On arrival, she was given a seat and sat majestically instead of being locked up. Can you imagine no friend went with Becky except myself, Osas and my sister when she was admitted for appendicitis and she could do something like this?
“I even talked with her (after the incident) and she said abeg leave me alone, what she had done was just ice cream. It was stated that she has done something similar in her secondary school ‘presco girls school’. That she tore the girls body with knife.
“Justice has to be served! If Becky should be rusticated it would be lovely but her mum who her father left would feel it so much. The poor woman has high blood pressure all because of her and the girl doesn’t care about school so she won’t feel it.
She should be beaten she and rusticated.. Stab someone five times over wrapper? Jesus Christ. and she was let go this afternoon without a scratch. While my sister was in the hospital, she was sleeping peacefully at home.”

Days after the tragic death of Chisom Anekwe at the Magodo Specialist Hospital, Folks have called on the Government to investigate the issue to ensure that incident like hers doesn’t occur again.
Chisom died during childbirth in the hospital, and the Hospital has finally responded.
The hospital has said that it couldn’t comment on the matter at the time it occurred because the case was under investigation.
Read the statement signed by Samuel O Isong on behalf of the hospital:
We are deeply saddened by the death of Mrs Chisom Anekwe. We wish to express our sympathy to the family and friends on this unfortunate and tragic incident. We pray that God will comfort them and grant them the fortitude to bear this great loss. We are however compelled to address the postings on the social media which are untrue. The facts have been markedly falsified and distorted.
It would appear that deliberate attempts were made to damage the image of the hospital and the integrity of the attending doctors and nurses based on false premises. It has become necessary to state the hospital’s account within the limits of professional ethics in order to give members of the public a balanced perspective.
We wish to state that the case is presently under investigation by statutory bodies such as the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) and the Lagos State Health Facilities Accreditation and Monitoring Authority (HEFAMA) and as such, the hospital would not want to do anything that would prejudice such investigations. It is also hoped that a post mortem examination would help to unravel the cause of this unfortunate incident.
Mrs Chisom Anekwe was a pleasant and gracious lady who was well liked by staff and other patients. We were delighted when she registered for antenatal care in Magodo Specialist Hospital for her third baby.
She had had 2 previous successful deliveries in this hospital in 2012 and 2015 respectively. During the index pregnancy, she developed hypertension at a time when the baby was not yet matured for delivery. Hypertensive diseases (pre-eclampsia) are the leading cause of death associated with pregnancy worldwide. She was offered admission to control and monitor the blood pressure on 26 April 2017 but declined and went home.
She later returned on 27 April 2017 because of headache and inability to sleep. She was placed on BP lowering drugs and was regularly seen by doctors and nurses including gynaecologists. At least 3 gynaecologists attended to her individually or jointly during her admission.
She remained stable until the early hours of 30 April 2017 when she complained of sudden severe abdominal pain. It emerged that she did not take the medication prescribed to reduce her blood pressure the previous evening. The nurses and doctors including a gynaecologist came to see and made a diagnosis of placental abruption, a condition in which the placenta is detached from the womb before the onset of labour.
Placental abruption is a known complication of hypertension in pregnancy and in this condition, the patient would lose a lot of blood and the baby would suffer from nutrient and oxygen lack and is usually born dead. On assessment, the patient was in shock.
Immediate steps were taken to resuscitate her with intravenous drips and oxygen while attempts were made to obtain blood for transfusion. The staff then prepared for emergency caesarean section to try and save the baby. The team including gynaecologist, anaesthetist and paediatrician were called and they attended. But before starting the operation, the doctors needed to confirm that the baby was still alive by listening to the heartbeat. Unfortunately, the baby’s heartbeat was not heard.
This necessitated a change of plan. They decided not to proceed with the operation because the baby was already dead and the operation could be dangerous for the mother in that situation. A further complication of placental abruption is disseminated intravascular coagulopathy (DIC) a condition where the blood fails to clot.
This could lead to excessive and uncontrollable bleeding during a caesarean operation. This was explained to the husband who gave consent for labour to be induced. Labour was induced and she was monitored throughout. She then had a normal delivery of the baby and placenta following labour induction.
Resuscitation of the patient continued and she was given drips and blood transfusion to replace what she had lost. She was continually monitored by nurses, doctors and gynaecologists. She was never left on her own contrary to the postings on social media. There was initial improvement in her condition, which appeared to be stabilizing. But when it unexpectedly started to deteriorate, it was decided after consultation with the husband to transfer her to another hospital.
The story on social media suggested that the patient fell into labour, called for help and nobody came. This is not true. The claim that the patient fell into labour was contradicted by the same social media post which alleged that labour was induced without the husband’s consent.
The patient never fell into labour and when she developed placenta abruption, the doctors and nurses including the gynaecologist attended promptly. For most of the time, 2 gynaecologists jointly attended to her along with other doctors and nurses. The patient was monitored continually during the management of this severe emergency.
The decision not to proceed with caesarean section was taken in the patient’s overall best interest and according to standard medical practice. The theatre was prepared and the team of gynaecologist, anaesthetist, paediatrician and others assembled ready to do the operation. They did not proceed because of consideration of the patient’s overall best interest. Ironically, it would be financially more rewarding for the hospital to do caesarean section rather than offer vaginal delivery. We placed our patient’s interest above any potential financial gain.
The story also claimed that the “doctor sneaked out of the hospital”. This is untrue. Two gynaecologists were jointly attending to the patient and when her condition appeared to be stabilizing, one of them left with a plan to return after a short while. And when he was contacted that the patient’s condition was deteriorating, he immediately made his way back to the hospital and later proceeded to the hospital where the patient was referred to support the family.
He left the referral hospital after he was physically assaulted by the patient’s husband.
We care very passionately about the health and lives of our patients.
The hospital is well equipped and adequately staffed. The hospital is fully accredited by the relevant statutory authorities. We are very sorrowful about losing this patient.
The death of any young person is regrettable and must be guarded against. We have handled many difficult cases successfully in the past and did our best in this situation. But we also are humble to recognize that doctors and nurses may care, it is God that heals and that despite human best effort, death may still occur.
We are greatly distressed and saddened by the death of this young woman who had been our patient for over 5 years and had her 2 babies successfully under our care. Our hearts and prayers are with the family.
We pray that God in His infinite mercy will comfort them and grant them the grace and strength to bear this great loss. We pray that the almighty God will take care of the children and the family she has left behind.
