Lai Mohammed Lists 5 Recent “Fake News” In Nigeria.
Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has described the phenomenon of fake news as one of the greatest threat to the country.
Speaking in Abuja at the seventh edition of the National Security Seminar, the minister listed five fake news which had been in circulation recently.
According to him,
“Regrettably, fake news is circulated worldwide through the means of the social media and it travels faster.
Only recently, we have to refute the fake news that Nigeria today is the most difficult place for Christians to live (1).
There was also the fake report that the armed forces of Nigeria armed the Fulani herdsmen and instigate them to carry out attacks (2).
All these news are unfounded, fake and has the capacity to set one religion or group against the other,’’ he said.
The minister said the most recent of such disinformation was the news of the alleged killing of some members of a pro-Biafra group, the Indigenous People of Biafra (3).
He also recalled the recent visit by two leaders of All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu and Bisi Akande to President Muhammadu Buhari in London which the champions of disinformation claimed it never happened (4).
He said similarly, it took the intervention of the US government to set the record straight through a release that its President, Donald Trump truly had a telephone conversation with President Buhari (5).
Outrage As Presidency Budgets N60m For Grass Cutting.
Members of the House of Representatives expressed shock on Tuesday that the Presidential Committee on North-East Initiative budgeted N60m to award contracts to cut grasses in communities ravaged by Boko Haram insurgents this year.
The development is coming while the controversy generated by a similar contract worth over N200m awarded by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Babachir David-Lawal, has yet to abate.
The N60m in the 2017 budget of PCNI is to cover contracts to cut “shrubs, grasses and trees” along the Maiduguri-Mama Road alone.
Lawmakers picked out the figure when the PCNI appeared before the House Committee on Internally Displaced Persons to defend its N45bn on humanitarian assistance, rehabilitation and resettlement of displaced villagers.
The Chairman of the committee, Mr. Sani Zoro, and other members were alarmed over the allocation.
“You can’t travel this same way (awarding contracts on grasses) again; it is not acceptable.
“Why can’t you assign this duty to the military to do it for you?
“They can use their personnel to clear the grasses and you can drop this idea of awarding contracts with N60m.”
Members were also worried that most provisions in the N45bn budget were for “security” and procurement of equipment for military services as against providing shelter, food, hospitals and schools for displaced persons.
“Your duty, from what we understand, is to provide succour for the displaced persons. These people are traumatised and they need urgent basic amenities as they return home. Rehabilitation has to do with their survival as human beings first,” Zoro added.
Members said several provisions appeared questionable.
Zoro noted,
“Maybe, you must first give us the mandate of the PCNI. You have N184m for screening programme for humanitarian activities.
What does that mean?
“There is N150m on advocacy and early warning system and N165m for conflict management.
“You are going to deliver security equipment for N200m. What type of security equipment? Then another N2.5bn for security outfits.
“Are you telling us that part of your role is to fund the operations of the military in the North-East? The military have their own budget already.
“Why are you not talking about food, shelter, medical care and schools for these IDPs?

UNN Lecturers Will Be Denied Promotion If Students Are Dissatisfied With Their Lecturers.
A memorandum which has been shared to lecturers of Nigeria’s foremost university, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, states that the lecturers will be denied their promotion if students are dissatisfied with their qualities.
According to the memorandum signed by the Deputy Vice Chancellor of the school, lecturers whose teaching score falls below 50% (to be determined by student’s evaluation), will be denied their promotion, no matter how well he/she performs in other criteria.

Christiano Ronaldo To Act Alongside Angelina Jolie In New TV Series.
Real Madrid forward, Cristiano Ronaldo has been lined up, not on the football pitch this time but to feature in a TV drama series alongside American actress and filmmaker, Angelina Jolie.
The world class footballer is expected to appear in a TV drama series about Syrian refugees, “Hayat Koprusu” trying to escape war.
Director of the series, Eyup Dirlik said Ronaldo will make a cameo appearance. He further added that it will feature actors and actresses from all over the world.
The TV series will be released in April of this year.
He said:
“The series is about the plight of a Syrian refugee family who flees the war-torn country, and what they go through.”
“We will begin filming in the first week of April, the series is about the plight of a refugee family and what they go through.”

Horrifying Moment Plane Crashes In Melbourne Shopping Centre, Leaving Five People Dead. (Photos)
A light aircraft on Tuesday, exploded in a “massive fireball” with police disclosing none of the five people aboard survived as it smashed into a shopping centre near the Australian city of Melbourne.
The Beechcraft plane veered just after take-off into the shopping centre, that was still closed, next to Essendon Fields airport.
The light aircraft crashed just after 9am local time today moments after taking off from Essendon Airport.
Pilot Max Quartermain, 63, reported a “catastrophic engine failure” moments before the plane crashed into a storage area at the rear of the shopping centre, police said.
The West Australian’s aviation editor, Geoffrey Thomas told the channel the plane appeared to have lost power in its left-hand engine, causing it to stall.
He said it was not fully loaded – carrying five people and golf buggies – and had enough fuel for its journey.
The four passengers were a group of American golfers playing their way around the world on the trip of a lifetime, news.com.au reports.

Lagos Housemaid Disappears With Ghanaian Family’s Daughter. (Photo)
A 12-year-old girl identified as Mary, jilted with her boss’ daughter, Faith Ayeh, last week Friday – the incident reportedly occured at the Kudirat Abiola Estate, Akute Road, Iju Ishaga area of Lagos State.
According to PUNCH Metro, Mary had been employed by the family through an agent about five months ago. She was said to be working directly with the woman of the house, Mrs. Glory Ayeh, who had a frozen foods shop on the street.
However, the suspect reportedly went out with the victim last Thursday, and their whereabouts had remained unknown.
Faith’s father, Paul, told Punch that his family had been shattered by the incident, saying efforts to locate them had been abortive.
He said:
“My family needed a house help and one of my wife’s friends arranged one for us. She brought Mary to my family about five months ago. She is the same age with my daughter.
“I was told that last Thursday, Mary disappeared from the house with my daughter. Our driver said he saw them with a bag.
“He said when he queried them, Mary answered that my wife asked them to take the bag to her shop. Since then, we have not heard anything.”
He said the matter, which was reported at the Iju Ishaga Police Division, had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba.
Paul said the agent who brought the suspect to the family had been arrested, adding that she was assisting the police with investigations.
The suspect, who hails from Benue State, was staying with her parents in Ibadan, Oyo State, before she was brought to live with the Ghanaian family. The victim’s mother, Glory Ayeh, said the agent was a relative of the suspect.
“I never sent them on any errand. She lied to take my daughter away,” she added.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confrimed the incident, saying it had been transferred to the SCIID.

“Buhari Deserves Rest And Should Be Allowed” – Gov Fayose Says.
Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has said politicians should allow President Muhammadu Buhari to enjoy his rest and stop disturbing him with needless visits.
The governor spoke on a live programme tagged, ‘Meet Your Governor’ aired on the state-owned Ekiti Television and Radio Stations on Saturday.
Fayose, while praying for sound health for the president, said his desire for a better Nigeria accounted for why he had been criticising the Federal Government when things were not done the right way.
He explained that he had stopped criticising the president since he travelled abroad for medical attention because anyone could fall sick and the president should be allowed to enjoy his rest.
“I don’t have any problem with the president; the only problem I have is with his handlers. They will say something today and say another tomorrow. Anybody can fall sick.
“I have not been criticising the president because he is sick. When he comes back and he is not doing the right thing, we will continue to criticise him,” he said.
Describing the visits by some All Progressives Congress chieftains to the president as a make-belief and too much of eye service, Fayose said it would not have been necessary if the people knew the truth from the onset.
“It is God that gives power to whoever He wills. As humans, we can fall sick. But people should allow him to rest.
“Some people are visiting him to convince people that he is well; that is a make-belief and too much of eye-service.”

The owner of a high-performance custom Range Rover, in Richmond, south London, seems to be a victim of a lover’s heartbreak.
The yet to be identified car owner stepped out of his house to see ‘cheater’, ‘heart-breaker’ and ‘rot in hell’ visibly painted on his £100k Range Rover.
This same brand of car, was used for publicity stunt almost one year ago, outside Harrods in Knightsbridge.
The car also had the words ‘cheater – it’s over’ and ‘hope she was worth it’ gratified on it.
A red paint was also used on the white diesel Range Rover Vogue outside the store in Basil Street, in May last year, with hundreds of people gathering to take pictures of the car, which turned out to be a publicity stunt.
Donald Trump Fires His Senior National Security Council Adviser For Disagreeing With Him.
The White House has confirmed that her president, Donald Trump has fired his senior US National Security Council adviser, Craig Deare.
The reason for this? – Craig dared to criticize Donald Trump administration’s Latin American policies. He has been reassigned to his old job at the National Defense University, an appointed position he’s held since January 2001.
Sarah Sanders, a White House spokeswoman said Craig Deare was removed from his role as a senior adviser at the National Security Council’s Western Hemisphere division Friday and “sent back to his original position“.
Deare had been assigned to the NSC adviser by the Trump administration.
Deare reportedly knocked the Trump administration’s handling of Latin American policies during a speech at The Wilson Center Thursday in Washington. He also criticized overall White House dysfunction.
CNN reports they could not independently confirm the account, and Deare did not respond to a request for comment.
Fielding questions about Deare’s reassignment, Sanders said that people who don’t agree with President Donald Trump should not have a job in his White House.
“I don’t think that any person that is there in order to carry out the President’s agenda should be against the President’s agenda.
It seems pretty silly that you would have someone who is not supportive of what you are trying to accomplish there to carry out that very thing.”

TB Joshua gives new prophecies, says Buhari needs more prayers
Prophet T.B. Joshua released more prophecies to his congregation at The Synagogue Church Of All Nations (SCOAN) on Sunday specifically calling for prayer for President Muhammadu Buhari’s health.
“I have some burning issues which I want to share with you,”
Joshua began before breaking his silence on the tensions currently engulfing Nigeria in the wake of Buhari’s prolonged absence on medical leave in the United Kingdom.
“Your president has good intentions. Good intentions cannot be carried out alone without good followers”.
“The priority of every Nigerian citizen now is the good health of your President because it can be anyone’s turn tomorrow. What you wish for others, God makes happen to you.”
Calling on congregants to rise up in prayer for President Muhammadu Buhari, he prayed specifically for “strength where there is weakness.”
Joshua went further to offer a profound prayer for Nigeria’s democracy.
“More importantly, we also have to rise up and pray that the Lord should give us the grace to sustain democracy. Pray for an uninterrupted democracy,” he said, much to the surprise of the congregation.
The cleric then re-echoed his prophecy in December 2015 about the devaluation of the Nigerian currency and a widespread scarcity of food.
According to him, the Naira would reach a ratio of 650 to one US Dollar on the black market before it stabilises “if the system agrees with Divine will.” Joshua said these issues would continue to plague the country “until June.”

Eight Month Old Baby, Three Other Children Die After Man Sets House On Fire In Oyo.
Police in Oyo state have arrested a man who allegedly set his family house on fire, while the occupants were asleep. Five members of the family, four of them children, including an eight month old baby, died.
The incident happened in Budo Alaka village in Kisi area of Oyo State around 2.35 a.m on Sunday.
SP Adekunle Ajisebutu, the Oyo Police Public Relations Officer said five persons, namely Blessing Samuel Ode (3), Friday Samuel Ode ( 8 months), Mummy Ogbada ‘f’ (10), Daddy Ogbada (6) and
Ogunma Ogbada (46) were burnt to death.
Ajisebutu said that there were two survivors, namely Samuel Daniel Ode (24) and Mariam Samuel Ode (21). They are receiving treatment at Muslim Hospital in Kisi.
He said that the suspect, identified as Monday Daniel, a 26 year-old, escaped from the scene but was later arrested by the police.
The Oyo PPRO said that the suspect upon interrogation confessed to the crime but claimed he did not know what came over him.
Ajisebutu said the case would soon be transferred to the Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Iyaganku in Ibadan for further investigation
According to a witness account, the suspect had on the previous day approached a member of the family for some money to travel to an undisclosed destination. His request was turned down.
The suspect, was said to have been angered by the snub. He allegedly came back in the early hours of Sunday and set the the house on fire.

Woman Catches Her Husband Cheating, Burns His Car While He’s Having S.ex With Mistress.
A Zimbabwean woman, the spouse of a prison guard, who had had enough of her husband’s infidelity, last Saturday night took matters into her hands as she burnt his car that was parked at a friend’s house while her man was bedding his girlfriend.
The Zimbabwe Prison and Correctional Services officer was identified as Edmore Mafuya.
Mafuya’s wife is alleged to have ‘set surveillance mechanisms’ on her skirt chasing husband whom she had been having marital disputes with for years.
Zim News reports that the wife finally found out where her husband was regularly parking his car before pouncing on it. Their report continues below:
This is not the first time for Mafuya and his wife to take their marital dispute into the public arena as last year in November, Mafuya and his girlfriend identified as Linda were caught while merrymaking at Vengere Shopping Centre and a big boxing match erupted.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, says Nigeria has achieved the status of second largest producer of rice in the world.
The presidential media aide, who spoke on the efforts being made by Pres. Buhari to restructure the economy, called for more patience.
He said the government met a situation in which the economy had been ravaged, while the people had been used to lifestyles that could no longer be sustained.
He said:
“No country will develop when you have to import virtually everything, including tooth pick and tissue paper. All the food we eat in this country was being imported.
So, all of the money earned was just going to buy food. But as I speak to you now, Nigeria just achieved the record of the second largest producer of rice in the world. The rice revolution just started a year ago. .
Some of you from Nasarawa know the kind of things going on there. A newspaper did an investigation in Kebbi and they found out that there were 48,000 new millionaires in Kebbi state alone last year for growing rice.
This over reliance on oil has killed this country and we cannot continue like this. So, the diversification of the economy means more money will be in the hands of ordinary Nigerians. And there will be widespread prosperity all over the country.”
He expressed happiness that “the economy is getting better, oil price is going up and the policies of government in the Niger Delta are beginning to calm things down”. Malam Garba added that “exploration and exportation of oil is growing, gas is coming back and power is getting better”.
“So, all we require of you is to be patient, Pres. Buhari is a long distance runner. He is not looking for short-term gain that people will just clap at him and those advantages just disappear. He wants to build a future of prosperity, a future that will be everlasting-something that will stay for generation upon generation.”

Angelina Jolie has for the first time, opened up in public about the ‘difficult‘ breakup of her marriage to Brad Pitt and the effect it has had on their six children.
The Hollywood icon is in Cambodia with the kids promoting her new film and appeared to tear up when asked about her personal life during an interview with BBC News.
According to Daily Mail the 41 year old actress, visibly emotional, said:
‘I don’t want to say very much about that, except to say it was a very difficult time and we are a family, and we will always be a family.
‘It was very difficult. Many people find themselves in this situation. My whole family have all been through a difficult time.’
A bitter custody battle initially played out in the media after Jolie filed for divorce from Pitt last September and sought full custody of their children following an alleged incident on board a private jet as the family returned to Los Angeles from France.
But the celebrity couple eventually reached an agreement in early January to seal the custody documents as they endeavor to resolve their issues and reach a divorce settlement.
‘My focus is my children, our children,’ she explained to the BBC.
‘We are and forever will be a family and so that is how I am coping. I am coping with finding a way through to make sure that this somehow makes us stronger and closer,’ she said.
