Today, Fillippo Amato, Counsellor, Head of Trade and Economics Section of EU, explained that recession could not be addressed with traditional development tools.
He said the recession was a recent development which was due to a number of factors, including the fall in oil prices and resurgence of militancy in the Niger Delta.
He said,
“To come out of recession, the country has to take brave decisions, regardless of how unpopular they may be such as fully and effectively devaluing the Naira.
Devaluing the Naira is a measure, which will finally reassure investors and attract new capitals to the country. At the same time, it will further reduce imports, thereby removing artificial forex restrictions, and removing any potential waste of scarce resources such as the fuel subsidy.”
A Hluhluwe man has said he will not be able to forgive the three (the third one held the camera) women who raped him.
A video of the incident appeared on social media and has since gone viral.
The man, whose name is known to the Daily News, said he was at home when a woman whom he knows called him over, saying she needed help with an electrical problem at her home.
“I went into her house and when I got there, I saw another girl in the room. I did not pay any attention to her. Then another girl who was hiding behind the door closed it, that’s when I realised that something was wrong.”
He said after they closed the door behind him, they told him they wanted to sleep with him.
“I initially thought they were joking,” he said.
However, he soon realised they were serious when he was attacked. He said he tried to defend himself but his arm was weak since he had injured it in an accident years ago.
He said he was let go and he went home and took a shower. He said the incident had left him feeling confused.
“I told my older sister about what happened but she thought I was joking.”
It was only after a video appeared online that she took what he said seriously and encouraged him to go to the police. He said he feared going to the police because he thought they would not take him seriously.
“When I told them what happened they were shocked. The three women were arrested the same day I reported the matter.”
The alleged rapists were people he knew and grew up with in the area, he said.
“I’m very angry,” he said of the assault. One of the families of the alleged rapists went to the man’s home to try to make amends, he said.
“My brothers and sisters were not having any of it,” he said.
He was looking forward to the trial and wanted the women to be severely punished. “People like that should not be part of society.”
What made it more difficult to move on was that the video was on social media and people had come to ask him what happened.
“It is something I never thought would happen to me. There is not much I can do but try to move on.”
According to Reese Mann, executive director of the South African Male Survivors of Sexual Abuse (Samssa), one out of six males before the age of 18 were sexually abused.
Mann said 19.3% of all sexual violations reported to police involved male victims.
“Male victims of sexual abuse are less likely than their female counterparts to report incidents of sexual abuse, because police and the judiciary don’t take it seriously,” Mann said.
Mann said a widely held myth was that if males got an erection and/or, ejaculated during the sexual abuse, they must have enjoyed it.
“A man being raped can still get an erection because it is in the physiological make-up of males that if they are caressed long enough they end up getting an erection,” said Mann.
He said there was also the myth that men should be capable of protecting themselves against sexual abuse.
“There are three stages that any victim of sexual abuse goes through, and they are called the three Fs.
“They can fight back, they can flee or they are just overcome by fear and the force exerted by the perpetrator, in which case they just freeze,” said Mann.
Police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane, confirmed the incident and said the women had appeared in the Hluhluwe Magistrate’s Court last Thursday and were expected to appear again on Tuesday for a bail application.

The reality TV star has fled the French capital on a private jet after she was robbed at gunpoint at a Paris apartment early on Monday morning.
Kim Kardashian, 35, had millions of dollars worth of jewellery stolen by five armed masked men dressed as police officers. The men stole a jewelry box worth €6 million ($6.7 million) and a ring worth €4 million ($4.5 million), prompting fears that the valuables were personal ones, and not just jewellery Ms Kardashian was borrowing for fashion week.
An insider said the total worth could be as high as $16 million. Kim also lost two of her prized smart phones – ones that are likely to contain a great deal of personal information.
At around 2.30am, the robbers entered the building after the concierge let them in. Handcuffed and at gunpoint, he then led them to the starlet’s flat. They entered Kim’s room, threatened her with a weapon, tied her up and locked her in the bathroom.
The mother-of-two, who is in the city for Paris Fashion Week, is ‘badly shaken but physically unharmed’, a spokeswoman told DailyMail.com.

Viewers were treated to quite a debate gone sour when a brawl erupted on Egyptian television between two guests who battled over Islamic religious law.
According to Daily News, they physically attacked each other with a studio chair and shoe. The brawl which aired on Egypt’s LTC TV was fueled by the men disagreeing over the use of headscarves.
Sheikh Mustafa Rashed, a Muslim legal expert known for his lax rulings on religious matters, ticked off Egyptian lawyer Nabih Al-Wahsh. He vexed Al-Wahsh, when he said the headscarf was a cultural tradition, not a religious duty.
The guests hurled insults at each other — and Al-Wahsh questioned Rashed’s scholarly credentials.
“You said you were the Mufti of Australia and a scholar in Sydney, but there’s not even a mosque in Sydney,” Al-Wahsh said.
Rashed retorted by accusing Al-Wahsh of being mentally ill. “You belong in a mental hospital,” he shouted. The show’s host cut to a commercial break when the attacks became physical.
He later returned to air the “freestyle wrestling” match that had taken place on the show’s set. Video shows the two men rising from their chairs after the string of verbal attacks.
Rashed hurled a studio chair at Al-Wahsh’s head, while Al-Wahsh removed a shoe, and struck Rashed repeatedly.
Cameramen rushed to the set to separate the two men, whose argument had broken a glass table and trashed the set.
“I did not see this coming. I’ve been working in media for over 20 years, and I’ve never seen a dialogue between two guests deteriorate to the point of physical violence,..” the show’s host Mohamed Al-Ghiety said.
The show’s host was visibly stunned. “I could never have imagined that such a thing could happen on my show,” he said.
He replayed the video twice without sound, because the dialogue was so offensive.
“Words were said that should never have been uttered,” he said

Vice President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo yesterday, October 2, 2016, while speaking at the Olive Tree parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) said that he became the Vice President of Nigeria without.
According to him, his emergence without any personal effort showed that God is involved in the business of changing Nigeria.
“This country has gone forward and it is going to keep moving forward. The reason why I, Yemi Osinbajo, without asking for a position, was given the vice-presidency of this nation is because God’s hand is in this business.
And so, I am completely confident that despite where we are today, it is the dawn of a new beginning. It has begun to show and surely there is a very bright light at the end of the tunnel. God knows that this country has a plan and purpose in Africa and in the world; the plan and purpose will never diminish or be cut short”he said

In an exclusive interview with Punch newspaper, a 61-year-old grandmother, Helen Odeba, who recently enrolled in secondary school because she wants to “learn new things” and use her education for business, says she’s performs better in Mathematics and English.
Below are excerpts from the chat;
Which state are you from?
I am from Kogi State.
How many children do you have?
I have nine children; four girls and five boys. Some of them have married. I have seven grandchildren.
Have you ever attended any school?
Yes, I finished primary education before I got married. When I got married, I stopped my education but I always wanted to return to school.
Why did you decide to return to secondary school at your age?
I want to learn new things. I miss my years in primary school as a child when I learnt many things. I felt that I could learn more now that I have given birth to children.
I am now able to concentrate on the future. This made me enrol at the Government Secondary School, Gonin Gora, Kaduna State. I started from the junior class.
What class are you?
I am in senior secondary two; commercial class.
Did your husband and children support your decision to return to school?
They did when I told them it was what I desired to do.
How do you relate with your classmates?
We relate well. We joke, chat and study together. I have a seat mate, Justina, who I disturb a lot to explain topics that I do not understand to me.
Which subjects do you like most?
I like Mathematics and English. I always perform better in the two subjects than I do in others.
How do you feel learning with younger classmates?
I always feel happy. It is fun learning with them. There is no shame since I know why I returned to school.
How do you combine taking care of your home and studying?
I try to plan everything well. I cook and take care of the home on time. I also find time to read what I learn in school daily. There is no day I do not revise what I was taught in school.
What do you intend to do with the secondary school result?
I want to open a shop after I finish with secondary school. I will know how to calculate money, talk to customers and give them their change.
Do you intend to go to university after your secondary education?
I am not sure that I want to do that.
What do your friends tell you?
Many of them do not support me. They keep telling me that I am wasting my time going to school at my age. I do not think I am wasting my time. I think I am doing what is right because no one is too old to learn. I wish they could join me to learn.
How do your classmates address you?
Everyone in the school calls me, ‘mama’ including my teacher. I only smile because I know it is a way of showing me respect. I respect all of them too.
What are some of the challenges you are facing as an adult pupil?
I take care of the home apart from going to school. Most times, I find it hard to cope. Also, I attend school regularly but sometimes, I may not have transport fare to go to school. There are also times that I do not understand some of the things that a teacher is teaching. I always try to meet my mates to teach me or meet the teacher to explain. The teachers are nice. They give me attention whenever I ask questions.

Sleeping is one of the most important things we do every night. Getting the right amount of sleep has an untold number of health benefits and not getting enough sleep is a serious problem in many countries around the world.
Did you know that you can get additional benefits by sleeping naked? Here are some benefits of sleeping in the nude:
1. It is easier.
When you don’t have to worry about sleeping in clothes, things start to get easier. You don’t have to buy pajamas, which can save you money. You have less clothes to wash and less clothes to put away.
You may have to clean your bed sheets more often, but not nearly as often as you’d have to wash your pajamas when you run out.
2. It forces you to be ready to go more often
Some people get off of work, change into their pajamas, and use this as an excuse to stay home the rest of the evening.
This can lead to a moresedentary lifestyle, which has been attributed to things like weight gain. When you keep your regular clothes on, you tend to go out more often and that’s a good thing.

Popular Ghanaian actor Majid Michel says the way Ghana’s system of education has been skewed to focus on teaching students how to find a job is wrong.
He wished students are made to also exploit potentials they can identify with. The status quo is the reason why Ghana’s unemployment rate is skyrocketing, he noted.
The actor was delivering a motivational speech to about 2000 students from tertiary and second cycle institutions in and around the Central Region at ‘Success Africa 2016’ organised by the LEC Group at the University of Cape Coast.
The multiple award-winning movie star mentioned that self-discovery plays important role in choosing a career, and therefore urged students to find and exploit their gifts to reduce unemployment.
According to a World Bank report on Ghana, about 48 percent of youth between 15 and 24 years do not have jobs. The report recommended to government to work towards equipping the youth with relevant skills through the educational system.
In an interview with TV3, Majid Michel noted how many students are deceived by a popular catchphrase on campus that there is ‘Life After School’. “…that’s why we have people with PhDs who have jobs but haven’t found and discovered their gifts, the system doesn’t teach you how to find your gift but teaches you how to find a job which is wrong…”
He, therefore, advised students who think acting is their passion to pursue it for a successful career.
Majid, known for his romantic roles in movies, also preached about the love of God, which he said is the source of knowledge based on which he charged his audience to love God with their strength by being morally ethical. “Love God by doing what he teaches you to do…” he said.
Station Manager for 3FM92.7, Mrs Petra Aba Asamoah, also charged undergraduates to add value and confidence to their personality to enable them stand out among their peers.
“Students come out with a first class and feel that immediately they should be placed in a very high position, forgetting that formal education doesn’t necessarily link to a job,” she observed.

Uriemu Onome got pregnant while in primary school at the age of 11. She was rejected by her parents for the shame she has brought the family. She moved in with her grandma who was not working in the village.
She realized her mistake and took the bull by the horn. How did she survived the shame and what happened to the son. Onome shared her amazing story on Facebook.
Read below:
“My story goes thus, sometime 20 years ago, I was naïve and influenced by peer pressure. My dad was and is still a strict disciplinarian; mum on the other hand was a bit soft on us and let us has our way. She practically covered for and took sides with me especially (being her only daughter amongst 3 sons).
I got out of hand and starting moving with the wrong set of friends, got pregnant at age 11 (primary 5) and then my whole world crumbled. The harsh reality of life began to unfold as I had to drop out of school, I couldn’t sit for my First School Leaving Certificate Examination (FSLC).” Narrating what she went through during the agonizing moment Onome went further:
“People in my neighbourhood made mockery of me, my dad couldn’t bare it, so he sent me out of the house and I had to go to the village to live with my grandma. In order to survive and fend for myself (as grandma isn’t working) I had to summon courage and face my own devil. I knew I was the cause of my predicaments and didn’t put the blame on my mum or anyone. I started street hawking selling all sorts ranging from tapioca (kpokpo garri), roasted pork meat, roasted maggots, Madiga bread, sachet water etc.”
Like the prodigal son In the bible, Onome knew she put herself in her situation and tried to make it up:
“Few months later I had my baby, saved some cash (through hawking) which I used to re-enroll for my FSLC, I passed with a “merit”. Still in the street hawking business, I saw myself through secondary school; I was determined to show my folks that I truly regretted my actions and is now a serious child.
Enrolled for WAEC cleared all my papers likewise my JAMB and then gained admission into the university.” When my dad saw how focused I had become, they took my child and I back, sent me off to the university and took care of my baby…..
With determination she made it in life: To cut the long story short, I’m now a M.Ed holder from the University of Lagos state Akoka, a successful teacher and happily married by His grace. My son is currently a 200 Level Law student. Strangers think he’s my younger brother because the age gap between us is so close, and he’s growing taller by the day.
My son is my life, he’s the reason I am where I am today as his presence into this world made me a responsible individual. He’s my victory story; he knows what I went through and is determined to make me a proud mum #TeamUnion #Unstoppable”

For those who have been watching TV since the days of the Village Headmaster, the name Tunde Alabi, will certainly ring a bell, as he was one of the regular characters in the now rested TV series.

Mr Alabi, who is said to currently have no home, money or anybody to help him, except for few colleagues like Paul Julius is even on the verge of being evicted from the hospital because he has no money to sustain his stay in the hospital and for further treatment.
According to sources close to him, the veteran actor has been battling diabetes for years with no treatment because of lack of money. All efforts to seek for help from different quarters have proved abortive.
However, in the bid to safe the thespian life, actor and movie director, Paul Julius and a few others have decided to cry out for help.
‘If there’s a better word to use in the place of veteran, then that should come for this old war horse in the world of make believe. Uncle Tunde Alabi has been on the acting scene since the glorious days of television drama in Nigeria and he’s today one of the last remnants of that octopus called The Village Headmaster, a television drama that was the in – thing in its days on National Television. His role in the now rested soap opera ‘PALACE’ produced by Ralph Nwadike was one that viewers will not forget in haste. This thorough breed professional of the old order who is equally at home with the youngsters of today, impacting knowledge and valuable experience into them whenever he has the opportunity is currently down with ailment which has put his right foot in danger to the point of amputation if urgent help is not given. He’s lying helplessly at the General Hospital, Lagos waiting to lose his right leg or even worse. He has done his part by putting smiles on the faces and happiness to the lives of millions home and abroad, it’s our turn to help him. Nothing is too small…HE will appreciate your candid help. Thanks and God bless
These to brothers, Marvellous and Godspower Ebubenwachukwu aged 11 and 14, from the same mother, drowned in a Lagoon at the Ibeshe area in Lagos state hours after they returned from school and went out to play on September 29th.

Read below:
Could there be a worst tragedy than having to see your grown up children taken away, just when you are so sure you have got them for keeps? At 11 and 14 years of age, parents have started rejoicing and even counting the days on when to start reaping the fruits of their investment on their children. But when the wicked hands of death chose such a time in their lives to snap them away, then there is little condolences can do.
When I spoke with these children’s mother few minutes ago, I didn’t find the right words to express my condolences, nor soothing words to comfort a her for the loss of her children. It would have been easier if these children were sick, but for children who returned from school and went out to play, only to be reported missing and after two days, their corpses were recovered from a lagoon, I do not know of a worst heartbreak.
When I brought the bitter news of the disappearance of these two angels to our notice, yesterday, I didn’t tell us then, how closely connected to the case I am. Marvellous and Godspower were my wife’s first cousins. Theirs is that kind of family, you never get to know whose child is who, as cousins relate so closely more than some siblings.
Nda Chioma, their mother is a fine soul, and the last of my mother-in-law’s siblings. Beautiful like all of them. Young and hardworking, she had the best dreams for all her children, including these boys who have now joined God in Heaven.
We can only imagine the pains of their parents, but we should never pray to come close to such experience in this life. This is the kind of thing that tempt one to question God, but God knows everything and whatever He allows, he knows the reasons for sure.
I am sure these boys are in Heaven with their Creator, my prayer is that God gives the parents, especially their mother the strength to beat this grievous loss”.
Operatives of Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of Lagos State Police Command on Friday apprehended a young lady, her boyfriend and two others for stealing an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card which belonged to one Musa Alli and withdrew over N300, 000.00 from the account.
The lady, Bamigboye Imoleayo, 24, was arrested by the operatives at a club house (name withheld) in Surulere area of Lagos State over the crime, before arresting three other accomplices, including her boyfriend, Adeyinka Ayodele, the same day in Itori, Ogun State.
The victim, who reported the case at the RRS’s office in Alausa, said that he met the suspect at a club in Surulere last week Friday. That the lady had earlier stolen his ATM before memorizing his Personal Identification Number (PIN) during online transfer of funds into his friend’s account.
“I thought I had misplaced the card not knowing that the lady had stolen it and thereafter glimpsed at the PIN for withdrawal”, he noted. He said that he was shocked on Saturday afternoon when he received alerts amounting to N90, 000:00 withdrawals.
“while I was still contemplating on how to deal with the issue, I got another debit alert for buying two Infinix phones totalling N84,000:00. I was confused and shocked. I didn’t know what action to take on a Saturday evening…. On Sunday, there was another debit. I couldn’t pin the crime to the lady I met at the club. I lodged a complaint on Monday morning at my bank and I was told that the withdrawals and shopping were legitimately made by me. I reported the incident at the RRS’s office on Monday after informing my bank. My emphasis to the police was the withdrawals and shopping totalling N300,000:00. It was unbelievable for me when I was face to face with the suspect, the lady I met at the club. And, she explained everything,” he stated.
After the arrest, the lady, Bamigboye Imoleayo, owned up during interrogations that she pocketed the victims ATM card when the owner slept off during their conversation at night at the club.
“I managed to steal the card when Musa (victim) dozed off during our conversations. Initially, I had spied on and crammed his PIN when he was sending money to his colleague via mobile app…. I committed this offence because I was so desperate to re-stock my shop at Wasimi in Ogun State, and also to take care of my only daughter. I never had a rethink while committing the crime. Although, I regretted my action now,” she stated.
She further narrated how she in company of her lover withdrew and expended funds from the ATM.
“After I spied on his PIN during a particular banking transaction on his phone, I intended to only withdraw N20,000.00 out of his bank account and then destroy the card…. However, when I withdrew the money, and checked the account balance, I was shocked to see his balance. Afterwards, I withdrew another N70,000.00 again making N90,000.00 that day. Then, the following day, I called my boyfriend, who instructed me not to destroy the card, but i should come straight to Itori, Ogun State, where he resides. On getting to him, he called two of his friends, Abimbola Akintanna and Owolabi Bamidele, to use the ATM at any nearest bank.”
He added that they took the card to a shopping mall in Abeokuta where they bought phones and clothes.
“The following day, we went straight to Abeokuta to use the card. We thought by going this far nobody could trace us. We bought two android phones for N84,000 at a phone store.… We proceeded to a boutique where four of us bought clothes worth N126,000. I recharged my phone with another N2,500 worth of recharge card. The money spent from the account was over N300, 000.00,” she revealed.
Two Android phones, 8 pairs of trousers and shirts were recovered from the suspects during a thorough search of their residents.
Confirming the arrest, the image maker of Lagos State Police Command, Superintendent of Police, SP Dolapo Badmus, urged members of public to always protect their PIN during banking transaction at any point in time.
The suspect and exhibits recovered have been transferred to State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, for prosecution.
UK scientists and clinicians working on a groundbreaking trial to test a possible cure for HIV infection say they have made remarkable progress after a test patient showed no sign of the virus following treatment.
The research, being carried out by five of Britain’s top universities with NHS support, is combining standard antiretroviral drugs with a drug that reactivates dormant HIV and a vaccine that induces the immune system to destroy the infected cells.
Antiretoviral drugs alone are highly effective at stopping the virus from reproducing but do not eradicate the disease, so must be taken for life.
Fifty patients are taking part in the trial and early tests on the first person to complete the treatment show no signs of the virus in his blood, the Sunday Times reported.
There is still a long way to go before the treatment can be deemed a success as the virus has previously re-emerged in people thought to have been “cured” and the use of antiretroviral drugs means the researchers cannot be sure the HIV has gone. Nevertheless there is optimism over the findings.
Mark Samuels, the managing director of the National Institute for Health Research Office for Clinical Research Infrastructure, told the Sunday Times: “This is one of the first serious attempts at a full cure for HIV. We are exploring the real possibility of curing HIV. This is a huge challenge and it’s still early days but the progress has been remarkable.”
HIV is able to hide itself from the immune system in dormant cells where highly sophisticated modern testing cannot find it and therefore resist therapy. The treatment endeavours to trick the virus into emerging from its hiding places and then trigger the body’s immune system to recognise it and attack it, an approach that has been called “kick and kill”.
There are approximately 37 million people living with HIV worldwide and about 35 million people have died from the virus.
The difficulty of declaring a patient clear of HIV was illustrated by the case of a girl in Mississippi, who was put on a strong course of antiretroviral drugs within 30 hours of her birth in 2010 after her mother was found to be HIV positive.
Treatment continued until the hospital lost contact with the mother 18 months later. When mother and child reappeared five months later the baby had no detectable virus in her blood, raising hopes that early intervention had cured her, but two years the virus had re-emerged.
The only person believed to have been cured was Timothy Ray Brown, an American treated in Germany. He needed a bone marrow transplant to replace his own cancerous cells with stem cells that would remake his immune system and his doctor found him a donor who was naturally resistant to HIV infection due to a genetic mutation that blocks HIV from entering the cells in the human body.
However, stem cell transplants are difficult and potentially dangerous for the recipient and only undertaken where they can save a life.
