Tragedy as grandmother sets her son, daughter-law and grandchildren ablaze in Ondo

A 75-year-old grandmother, identified as Iforiti Oloro, has allegedly set her son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren ablaze in Ondo State.

It was gathered that the grandmother, who resides with her son, Victor Oloro, and his family in the same house, set the house ablaze while the family members were asleep.

While one of the grandchildren survived and is in critical condition at the Federal Medical Center (FMC), Owo, Victor, his wife, Rachel, and their other child died.

The People’s Gazette reports that the tragic incident occurred at Aponmu, a suburb of Akure, Ondo’s capital city, last Saturday, March 18.

A resident in the community, Bayo Adegboyega, who confirmed the incident to The Gazette, said,

“We noticed that the building was on fire around 2:00 a.m., and all the family members were at home. I had to join neighbours close to the building in putting off the fire by breaking the windows to gain entry,” he narrated.

“Sadly, by the time we entered, the man (Victor Oloro), his wife (Racheal), and two children ( Toluwani and Blessing) had been affected by the fire.”

He also mentioned that the victims were taken to a state hospital in Akure but were rejected due to the degrees of burns suffered from the fire incident.

“So, we rushed them to the Federal Medical Centre in Owo, but unfortunately, we lost the last born on arrival while on Sunday night, the man and his wife died. Only the firstborn is alive but in a critical condition,” Mr Adegboyega added

While describing the incident as “bizarre and shocking,” Mr Adegboyega said the residents later learned that the grandmother allegedly set the building on fire.

“It was yesterday (Monday) that we got to know that the old woman got some dry palm fronds and the little petrol her son kept in a gallon, spread it around the house, and set the house on fire. While confessing, the woman said she set the house on fire because her son and his wife were allegedly starving her of food.”

The spokesman of the command, Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, who confirmed the incident on Tuesday morning, said that the divisional police officer in the community was still awaiting the details of the incident.

Her words,

“I’m still awaiting full details of the incident from the DPO in charge of the area. So, I would advise you to give me more time to gather the facts”.

Meanwhile, friends have taken to social media to mourn the couple and their child.

A 60-year-old Nigerian bus driver, Olisofa Popoola, was on Monday March 20 2023 arraigned in a UK court over the death of a pedestrian in London.

Popoola was driving an electric 507 single decker bus when he crashed into another bus outside Victoria Station in London, causing the death of 32-year-old Melissa Burr.

Jurors heard that Popoola was trying to move his vehicle forward when he unintentionally pressed the accelerator instead of brake, and crashed into the back of another 507 bus which was waiting to pick up passengers outside the railway station.

Instead of stopping the bus, he continued driving forward even after hitting the other vehicle. Sadly, Ms. Burr was crossing the road at the time of the crash and was knocked down before getting crushed under the vehicle.

It was gathered that the driver of the second bus, Diana Mathuranayagam, was flung from her vehicle and suffered a badly fractured eye socket.

Following the crash, Popoola told the police, “My foot slipped off the brake and onto the accelerator and I have collided with the bus in front.”

Meanwhile, the trial is still ongoing and no judgement has been given yet.

Lagos musician and friend allegedly k!ll Bureau de change operators after inviting them to their home in Lekki

The police in Lagos State are currently on the trail of a musician identified as Collins Etaredafe, aka Top Boy, for the alleged murder of two Bureau-De-Change operators.

It was gathered that Top Boy, who was with a yet-to-be-identified friend, invited the BDC operators into his house in the Lekki area of Lagos State under the guise of changing some dollars.

After the BDC operators entered the building on Saturday, March 18, they were allegedly killed and their corpses were dumped in a drainage system located at the front of the singer’s residence.

Punch reports that a facility manager in the area, Paul Omotosho, claimed the agent in charge of the building informed him that some neighbors, upon discovering the corpses in the drainage, traced some drops of blood to Toy Boy’s apartment.

“I knew Etaredafe through his girlfriend, Evelyn, about three years ago when she contacted me that he needed an apartment. That was how he got my number. He called me, said he stays in Delta State, and that he wants to book a short-let apartment. That was how he became a regular client. Sometimes he would claim he does not know Lagos and will send money to my account to help him get some items and send them to him. In February 2022, he said he wanted to secure an apartment where his mum would be living in Lagos. he said he wanted to surprise her with the apartment as she has not been to Lagos before.

I had to reach out to a fellow agent who assisted me in getting the apartment. After that, the agent sent me a form to fill in the details of the occupant but when I asked for the details of his mum, he said she did not have any means of identification. Out of the trust I had for him as a regular client, I foolishly provided someone’s details to keep the place for him and since then, my thinking is that his mother had moved in.” Omotosho said.

Omotosho said he was at home when the agent in charge of the apartment where Etaredafe, aka Top Boy, had been living in place of his mother called to inform him that the musician had allegedly killed the BDC operators.

“The agent called me that Etaredafe had killed two people in his apartment. He also said he dumped their corpses outside the gate and ran away. The agent said the blood of the deceased victims was traced to his apartment and later discovered that the people the musician killed were Bureau-De-Change operators. I was told he invited them to his apartment because he wanted to change dollars before killing them.” he said

In a bid to locate Etaredafe’s whereabouts, Omotosho said he contacted his girlfriend who said she did not know any address of his relatives. She later called me on Monday and asked if I heard that Etaredafe killed two people in his house and ran away. She said they only met on social media and she does not know where he or his family lives.” he said

The spokesperson of the state police command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed the incident to newsmen, said,

“The main suspects are on the run. No part of the deceased victims’ bodies was cut off. The case is at the SCID and is progressing. The security man is in custody and is assisting with the investigation.”

Lagos businessman, IVD arraigned for death of his wife, Bimbo

Nigerian businessman, Ikechukwu Ogbonna, popularly known as IVD, has been arraigned before the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja over the alleged manslaughter of his late wife, Abimbola.

IVD was arraigned on Monday, March 20, before Justice Nicole-Clay on one count of involuntary manslaughter in suit No. LD/21055C/23, which was preferred against him by the Lagos State Government.

Recall that Abimbola died on October 12, 2022, in a fire incident at their residence in the Lekki area of the state.

At the resumed hearing of the case on Monday March 20, the prosecuting counsel, Adeshola Bello, told the court that there was a mix-up in the date the alleged offence was committed.

“We have on record October 10 but the date was October 12,” Bello said.

Bello urged the court to grant the prosecution permission to enable them to make an amendment, which the court granted.

Bello said the alleged offence committed contravened Section 229 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Ogbonna, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge against him.

The defence counsel, Mr Victor Ogunde, SAN, sought bail for the defendant.

While seeking bail for the defendant, the judge asked why he was bringing a bail application despite the fact that the defendant was on bail since March 1.

The defence counsel replied that the suit against his client was with a different charge number.

Consequently, Justice Nicole-Clay adjourned the case till March 30, May 24 and 25, 2023, for the commencement of trial.

The singer took to the microblogging platform, Twitter to address the issues of rigging and violence, voters experienced nationwide.

According to her, INEC should have pointed out who they wanted to elect and used the budget to repair schools and hospitals instead.

Simi also called out religious leaders who refused to condemn the acts but always opt to pray for the country.

She wrote;

“300 billion naira budget for this joke of an election. @inecnigeria you might have as well given them back the money to fix some hospitals and schools and just used finger to point at the people you wanted to select.
Anybody that saw the disenfranchisement and didn’t condemn it better keep their prayers for Nigeria. She doesn’t need prayers from people like you.
The blatant rigging and nobody in power addressed it. Lol. Giant problem of Africa.”

According to Olasumbo, when she walked out of her marriage in 2017, she was mentally, emotionally, and financially drained.

She said she was clueless about the next thing to do, but she knew she had to run for her life and protect her kids at all costs.

Read her full story below,

“This is what I looked like when I walked out of my marriage in 2017 with two toddlers. I just clocked 30, I was mentally, emotionally and financially drained. I was tired and i knew i had to walk away. Did i know what i was going to do next? No but i walked,” she wrote.

“Okay let me tell you why it looks all shitty, I left my marriage clueless about the next thing to do but knew I had to run for my life yet I has no family support. I was not lucky to come from a stable family background, my ex saw this and capitalised on it.

“The marriage was 4 years old as at when it officially ended but it was dead from the beginning. I know the judginas will ask if I didn’t see the red flag…well story for another day but well the deed has been done and now I have two kids who had no fault.

“My entire desire was to protect my kids. I mean they know nothing about the folly and stupidity of the parents that brought them to this world. I saved up and got my own apartment. I remember crying so much the first night I moved into my new home. I was scared.

“I had never gone on this kind of journey before and i don’t know how to walk this path. I was totally confused and clueless. I was more afraid for my kids, scared they would suffer which i do not want, what if they fall sick and I can’t take care of them? So many what ifs.

“All these was in 2017….this is 2023 and yes it has not been a smooth journey…my life has taken a pause because I was not opportune to have a family support and I had to learn, unlearn and relearn on my own. My career has suffered so much. Yes.

“My wants, desires has all been pushed to the base because I can’t afford all at once so my kids come first..it has not been an easy ride doing this alone, no single financial support from the man who bore them even though he has 100% access to these kids.

“I look back today and ask myself if it is all worth it and Yes I am happy I made that decision. I am proud of the pains, the tears, the laughter. I am proud for holding myself strong despite the stigma and backlash that comes with being a single mom. HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY TO ME.”
