Popular Nigerian singer, Banky W, has reacted as a court declared marriages conducted at the Ikoyi Marriage Registry as illegal and invalid.
According to reports, there’s an ongoing legal dispute between the Local government Areas of Nigeria against the Federal government for the determination of who have the power to operate marriage registries, conduct marriages and issue marriage certificates.
However, recently the federal High court sitting in Ikoyi held in the favor of the Eti Osa local government granted their prayers while stating that it is statutorily the job of the local governments as provided by the law and only the local governments have the power to do such and the acts of the federal government through the ministry of interior operating marriage registries is clearly beyond their powers, which makes all marriages conducted by federal marriage registries or through their agents illegal and invalid.
Reacting to this report, Banky, who legally tied the knot with his actress wife, Adesua, at the Ikoyi registry in 2017, teased his wife, calling her Baby Mama.
See his post below,
UPDATE: FG DISMISSES REPORTS THAT MARRIAGES CONDUCTED AT IKOYI REGISTRY ARE VOID
The federal government has debunked reports making the rounds that the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has voided all marriages conducted by the Ikoyi marriage registry.
In a statement on Tuesday evening, the Permanent Secretary and Principal Registrar of Marriages, Ministry Of Interior, described the reports as “false, misleading and a deliberate distortion of the decision of the Court in Suit No: FHC/L/CS/816/18 between Eti-Osa Local Government Council & 3 others”.
Read the full statement below.
The attention of the Ministry of Interior has been drawn to news making the rounds on social media claiming that the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has declared all Marriages conducted by Ikoyi marriage registry to be illegal and invalid.
We would like to state that this statement is false, misleading and a deliberate distortion of the decision of the Court in Suit No: FHC/L/CS/816/18 between Eti-Osa Local Government Council & 3 others… where the Honourable Court held that only the Local Government councils can conduct valid marriages in Nigeria.
It is noteworthy that, the same Federal High Court situated in Ikoyi, Lagos in Suit No. FHC/L/870/2002 between Prince Haastrup and Eti Osa Local Government held that the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Interior is constitutionally empowered to conduct marriages in Nigeria and held that the Local Governments were delegated by the Federal Government to conduct marriages, by virtue of Legal Notices issued pursuant to the Marriage Act.
In that case, the learned trial judge held that nothing in the role of local governments, as defined in the Constitution, suggests that local governments can conduct or contract marriages as alleged in their pleadings. The Court affirmed that powers of the local governments to contract statutory marriages is derived from the Legal Notices issued by the President.
The Court also confirmed that the role of local governments, as enshrined in the Constitution is limited to registration of all forms of marriages (including Islamic and customary marriages).
Rather than appeal this decision, the same claimants instituted another action in 2016 Suit no. FHC/L/CS/1760/16 Egor Local Government, EtiOsa Local Government and 2 others V Hon, Minister of Interior and 2 Others.
The Court held that the Suit was an abuse of court process, as it could not be invited to make another pronouncement on the same point, which would lead to conflicting decisions coming from the same court and struck out the case.
The same issue was adjudicated in the case of Olumide Babalola vs Ikeja Local Government and the Registered Trustees of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) in Suit No. LD/1343/GCM/2016 delivered on 15th May, 2017.
The Court held that while registration of marriages are regulated by local governments, being under the concurrent list, formation of marriage is under the Exclusive Legislative List, within the jurisdiction of the Federal Government, regulated by the Ministry of Interior.
It is further worthy of note that the issue of formation, annulment and other matrimonial causes are by virtue of item 61 of the 1st Schedule of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria exclusively reserved for the Federal Government. The General Public is invited to note that these judgments are all still subsisting, competent and have not been appealed against till date.
Further to the above, the current decision of the Federal High Court delivered by Hon. Justice D. E. Osiagor of Court 6, cannot set aside a previous decision of the same Court, which is of coordinate jurisdiction, as that would amount to the court sitting on appeal over its own judgment.. In the circumstances, the Federal Government through the Ministry of Interior, has applied for a certified true copy of the judgement and will take appropriate further action including but not limited to filing of an appeal in respect of this conflicting and confusing decision, in line with the provisions of the Constitution.
We would like to appeal to the general public, the international community, to couples who had hitherto had their marriages solemnized at Federal Marriage Registries by duly licensed places of worship and to all intending couples to be calm and continue transacting their normal businesses at all Federal Marriage Registries subsisting throughout the federation in line with statutory and constitutional provisions.
The general public is to please note the foregoing and maintain status quo ante. Dr. Shuaib Belgore Permanent Secretary/Principal Registrar of Marriages

An Australian socialite, Stephenie Rodriguez, has narrated how she underwent 36 surgeries and had both feet amputated after contracting cerebral malaria during a business trip to Lagos, Nigeria.
The 52-year-old single mom visited Lagos in 2019 after being invited to speak at a business gathering for travel executives.
Speaking with the Sydney Morning Herald, she said during the gathering, she was asked to take a photo shoot next to a pool of stagnant water. And it was there that she got bitten three times by a mosquito on her left ankle.
Days later after flying to India, Ms Rodriguez began to feel tired and exhausted – she was later rushed to hospital after str*ggling to eat and drink. An infectious diseases specialist confirmed she had cerebral Malaria.
Doctors gave her a two per cent chance of survival after Artesunate – a dr*g used to treat severe malaria – sent her into septic shock and organ failure. In a last ditch effort to save her life doctors used vasopressor dr*gs to redirect blood flow from her limbs to her vital organs.
“It was the last trick in the bag, and they cautioned my family that if I survived, there would be collateral damage. The vasopressors robbed my feet and hands, the things furthest from my heart, of blood and like frostbite, the areas without blood and oxygen began to die,” she said.
The dr*gs caused her feet and hands to blacken from necrosis and at one point she witnessed her own toe fall off into her hand. After being airlifted back to Australia, doctor’s advised she would have to undergo an above the knee amputation along with several fingers.
Horr!fied by the thought she held off on the procedure, instead undergoing multiple skin grafts and surgeries to see if her condition would improve. But eventually, she had to have her remaining toes amputated.
Wheelchair bound and unable to stand from unbearable pain, Ms Rodriguez underwent drastic surgery to have both feet amputated and replaced with above-ankle bilateral osseointegrated implants and mechanical feet.

Human Rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, Mr Femi Falana, has asked the Lagos State Police Command to invite controversial investigative journalist, Kemi Olunloyo, for questioning over her comment on the death of Sylvester Oromoni.
It can be recalled that the 12-year-old Dowen College student was allegedly beaten to death by his seniors for refusing to join their cult.

In a new development, the minor’s family has filed a petition against her through its lawyer, Falana & Falana’s Chambers, on Monday, December 13.
In the petition addressed to the Deputy Commissioner of Police at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Lagos, the family called for an investigation to be conducted regarding Olunloyo’s claims.
The Chamber said although the students and staff of the college named in the brutal murder of the deceased had made useful statements to the Police, Olunloyo had just introduced a new twist to the case through her reckless allegations against Sylvester.
He added that the viral recording was released on social media to divert the police’s attention from the ongoing investigation.
“Apart from attempting to destroy the name of Sylvester Oromoni, Ms Olunloyo has exacerbated the tragedy of his parents, family members and friends without any justification whatsoever,” he said.
“Even though the reckless statement is a figment of the imagination of Ms Olunloyo, we are of the strong view that she ought to assist the Police in the ongoing investigation into the cause of the death of Sylvester Oromoni.”
He also urged the Police to prosecute Olunloyo, in a competent court, if she can not substantiate her allegations against the deceased minor.

We all like to look good, at the end of the day this body is a shell. I saw my dad, I saw my mom and you just know the person you know and love is gone”.
“They call my dad mobility that’s like his nickname. I said ‘Mobility how could you do this to me’? I just kept thinking what am I going to do? How am I ever going to get back from this?”

“There is almost nothing that someone will do that you won’t forgive if you want to. If you decide you don’t want to forgive, that’s different. But if you want to forgive, there is nothing that someone will do to you that you won’t forgive. We all have to realize first of all that we are all sinners.
“We are all completely flawed. Nobody is perfect so don’t look for perfection in the next person because you are not even perfect yourself. So we decided very earlier on in the marriage, actually before, that divorce is not an option. So no matter what happens, we are in this forever”. She said.

“OMFGGGG I PASSED THE BABY BAR EXAM!!!!
Looking in the mirror, I am really proud of the woman looking back today in the reflection.
For anyone who doesn’t know my law school journey, know this wasn’t easy or handed to me. I failed this exam 3 times in 2 years, but I got back up each time and studied harder and tried again until I did it!!! (I did have COVID on the 3rd try w a 104 fever but I’m not making excuses😉)
In California, the way I’m studying law you need to take 2 bar exams, this was just the first one but with the harder pass rate. I was told by top lawyers that this was a close to impossible journey and harder than the traditional law school route but it was my only option and it feels so so sooooo good to be here and on my way to achieving my goals.
A big thank you to @vanjones68 who talked me into going to law school in the first place before introducing me to @jessicajackson and @edyhaney who have brought me along to watch their every move in the court room. I respect them so much and appreciate you both for letting me tag along and ask all of the little questions along the way.
And Bar Bri Law School bar prep- I couldn’t have done it without you guys! Setting me up with professors @sam.arlen.farkas and @chuckshonholtz changed my life. Thank you guys for putting in the hours and teaching me everything I needed to know! 10 hour days, daily 4 hour zooms, our in person practice tests week after week. We did it!
I know my dad would be so proud and he would actually be so shocked to know that this is my path now but he would have been my best study partner. I am told he was notorious for making fun of people who didn’t pass on their first attempt like he did, but he would have been my biggest cheerleader!
Bottom line is don’t ever give up even when you are holding on by a thread, you can do it!!!!! Set your mind to it and get it done because it feels soooooo good once you get to the other side! ⚖️ 📚”
