The Enugu state Magistrate court on Monday, July 6, remanded a couple, Mr. Jude Ozougwu, and his wife, Ifeoma in prison for allegedly brutalizing their 10-year-old maid, Nneoma Nnadi.

The couple made news over the weekend after photos of the battered body of Nneoma surfaced online.

The state police command today arraigned the couple before Chief Magistrate Agu of Enugu North Court 1 sitting in the Enugu North Magistrate District on three-count charge bothering on attempted murder. The charge marked No MEN/298c/2020 is between the Commissioner of Police vis Mr Jude Ozougwu ‘m’ age 40 years and Ifeoma Ozougwu ‘f’ age 24 years.

At the hearing of the case, the Police Prosecutor, CSP Paschal Nwachukwu, argued that the magistrate court lacked the jurisdiction to hear such a case. He added that the issue of bail for the couple as raised during court proceedings was premature, uncalled for, and against the dictates of the law.

“The evidence of this matter is grievous and weighty. How can one explain nailing a child as it was done to Jesus Christ, using hot pressing iron, sharp and dangerous objects on her even to her private parts,” he told the court

However, counsel to the couple, Emeka Orji, argued that the court should put aside the public sentiment attached to the case and grant the couple bail. Orji said the couple has two little children to also look after.

The presiding Magistrate, Agu, refused to admit the couple on bail and ordered that they be remand in the Nsukka correctional facility pending further advice by the state’s Director of Public Prosecution. The case was then adjourned till August 10 for a report of DPP’s advice.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC has arraigned social media influencer and comedian, Adedamola Adewale Rukayat (a.k.a Adeherself) before Justice Sherifat Solebo of the Special Offence Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos on a one-count charge of possession of fraudulent documents.

The defendant was arrested last month following intelligence received by the Commission on the activities of some young men allegedly involved in internet fraud in the Lekki axis of Lagos State.

During interrogation, Adewale AKA “Adeherself” reportedly confessed to being a picker” in cybercrimes.

The count read: “That you, Adewale Adedamola Rukayat, on or about the 15th day of June 2020 in Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, with intent to defraud, had in your possession documents titled “WhatsAPP”, which representations you knew or ought to have known, was false and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 6 (8) (b) and 1 (3) (d) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act No. 14 of 2006.

She pleaded not guilty to the charge.

In view of her plea, prosecution counsel, S.O. Daji, asked the court for a trial date and also prayed that she be remanded in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service, NCS.

The defence counsel informed the court of a bail application for his client and also prayed for a short date to enable its hearing.

Justice Solebo adjourned the matter to July 13, 2020, for the hearing of the bail application and also ordered the defendant to be remanded in the EFCC custody

Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, has said refreshments will no longer be served aboard domestic flights.

The minister gave the reason for the decision is to avoid risk of contamination.

An excited Nigerian lady has taken to social media to announce the arrival of her first child after 12 years of marriage.

In a Facebook post she shared, Queen Ogbonna revealed that she welcomed a baby girl.

She wrote;

A Twitter user with the handle @sama_on_point has cried out on behalf of a nursing mother who was allegedly battered by her husband at their home in the Ogba area of Lagos state today July 6.

In the video, a female neighbor could be heard asking the woman to pack her things and leave the house as being married isn’t by force.

The Twitter user who posted a video to backup his claim, gave the name of the nursing mother’s Mrs. Ngozi and her husband, Mr. Henry.

He wrote:

”This is Mrs Ngozi after she was battered by her husband, Mr Henry today. This is a recurring battering as reported by neighbours. She lives with her husband at 3 Mafo Close, Yaya Abatan off Abeokuta Street, Ogba, Lagos. Rescue this lady please!”

The Lagos state Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team DSVRT and the National Human Rights Commission NHRC have both reacted to the video.

According to a new disturbing report, a teenager who was gang-raped by 4 men after she moved to Lagos in search of greener pastures has tested positive for COVID-19.

16-year-old Aishat, an Oyo state indigene, became pregnant after she was gang-raped by four men when she took shelter in a bus at a motor park in Ijesha, Surulere.

Aishat was brought to Lagos by a guardian who took her from her parents in Saki, Oyo state – the guardian, a woman, promised to hand her over to the person she would be working with. However, the woman abandoned her at the motor park in Lagos, claiming she was coming back. She never did.

As she knew no one in Lagos, Aisha kept roaming in motor parks leading to her being gang-raped by 4 men she says she knows.

Pregnant and homeless, Aishat continued roaming in the park where she kept seeing her rapists. She passed her nights in shops until she was heavily pregnant and she was referred to welfare workers.

Aishat was directed to the Mother and Child Care Centre in Gbaja, through the Ministry of Women Affairs, where her case was first reported. There, she had her baby girl via caesarean section. Unfortunately, Aishat wasn’t producing breast milk after the birth of her child.

After the birth of her child, the plan was to take her to one of the government shelters in the state but the management of the centre insisted that a COVID-19 test be conducted on her first.

The COVID-19 test result came out positive and she was transferred to the Gbagada Isolation Centre instead.

Those who came in contact with Aishat were asked to undergo Coronavirus test. 8 of the hospital staff allegedly tested positive and have been asked to go to the isolation centre.

A 70-year-old man has reportedly been arrested for allegedly raping an eight-year-old girl in the Chanchaga area of Minna, Niger State.

The suspect, identified as Mohammed Sani Umar (Tela) allegedly raped the girl twice before giving her N80 to stay quiet about the incident. But the young girl later revealed that the septuagenarian defiled her when her mom noticed her strange behavior and examined her.

Narrating the ordeal, the girl’s uncle, Abubakar told Sahara Reporters:   Abubakar narrated.

He also said Umar confessed to the crime after he was beaten by angry members in the community before they handed over to the police for further investigation and prosecution.

“The woman started crying and shouted for help. People came around, dragged him to the family house, where he was beaten, and confessed that he had sex with her twice.

“He said that he gave her N50 once and another N30 the second time. We took him to the police custody and handed him to the police to charge him to court,” Abubakar added.

The family also appealed to the police to ensure justice is served right in this case as they fear that the matter could be swept under the carpet because Umar is influential in the community.

“The Divisional Police Officer said the case would be forwarded to the state command on Monday.

“We want the police to do the right thing because the man is very influential and has some people who usually bail criminals arrested by the police.

“He knows the rich people in the community and there is a possibility they would conspire with the police to release the man and sweep the matter under the carpet.

“The police should ensure justice is served right in this case,” the family urged.
