Ace actor, Yemi Solade who recently celebrated his 60th birthday, opens up in a chat with City People about his experience in the industry.
The popular actor who does not take ‘nonsense’ from anybody revealed why some of his fellow actors don’t like him.
How did you get used to the existing tradition in the Yoruba movie industry?
I have had to adjust a bit. I met a whole lot of traditional ways they do their thing when I joined.
There is this particular practice in the Yoruba movie industry, it is called: I do for you, you do for me. It works for some people but not for me because I didn’t run a clique. They will invite stars to location, and end up giving them money just for fuel, and end up running round society men and women for the bigger survival. So, I chose to remain the consummate actor that I am. To Just be different, to do my craft and collect good fees and live a normal life.
How were you able to break into the Yoruba movie industry considering the long list of stars there already?
Yes. The likes of Taiwo Hassan. He was the Denzel Washington of the industry. Let’s give it to him. He’s got everything. He is tall, handsome and all that, and you know that I am not tall, but I have a mouth. I saw what these guys were trying to do, coming from their own backgrounds. The Alarijo thing. Though, we experienced it in Wole Soyinka’s theatre. Their Alarijo Theatre was from Ogunde Theatre, and that was what produced stars like Adebayo Salami, Jide Kosoko and others and they refer to them as “Oga Mi”. But I won’t use that term. If you ask me who trained me, I will just tell you, Wole Soyinka. He was a lecturer in the University of Ife, a Civil Servant that was paid. He did not employ or write any Jamb for me. He only influenced my studying Theatre and becoming a drama student in his department. But in the Yoruba arm, you must have an Oga. They have master and apprenticeship scheme. Somebody must train you and you cannot erode that, it has come to stay. Here I was, coming from Wole Soyinka’s line, where things like that were not applicable. I could give him all the respect that he taught me, but not to the extent of being subservient to him. That was the structure I met, and I was doing my thing differently and I had issues, because they saw me like someone that was arrogant and doing something they were not used to. They concluded I was just one guy that just came to have a feel of the industry.
I can remember when Mama Rainbow met me on the set of “Oju Inu”. She said “Doctor, if I invite you will you work for me? I played the role of Medical Doctor in the movie back then and everything was well structured. I began to point out certain things that I felt were missing such as calling someone Mrs. Tayo in a Corporate environment. Once you use the prefix, the surname has to follow. So they began to frown at my ideas, that Baba Ogunde already said it that some English people will come and hijack this theatre work. But despite everything I was focused because I already made up my mind to come and make impact. And don’t forget this is what I was trained to do. It is my job. It’s my life and I was not doing it for money. I was so excited that the Marketers who saw the flicks were interested in my job.
So I began to be their bride at that point. Many major roles were coming to me and I was enjoying myself. I had clashes with a few of them who were not ready to embrace my style and I was telling them I wasn’t shifting grounds. I had reasons to drop some bombshell in the media. Till tomorrow I will keep saying it that, lack of education, professional training, formal training is the problem of that sector, but I give it to them, they are a bunch of raw talents, that no one can take from them. If you see their crafts, you will fall in love with their skills, but the technical know-how and power of articulation we don’t have.
Also, the fear of Voodoo but I didn’t see all of that, I was cautioned to be extremely careful, but here I am today. I have contributed in my own little way and I’m still doing that now. And I think, we have more understanding now because those critics thought I was out to destroy the structure.
But I was only trying to let them know that I was not coming from their background and orientations but we can marry the two together. I even told them to their faces that either they like it or not, we must marry the two together and what was coming out from this small body was beautiful to lots of people. I represented a class of actors in the industry and with that, we began to increase, I mean Actors who have gone to school, not necessarily studying Theatre Arts, but those who have degrees in different fields. They could express themselves before the press and everybody speaks English fluently I began to see them and started feeling at ease with myself. And I was like, this is what I really want to see. So apart from exhibiting their skills, they can relate with people of other professions with confidence.

You are NOT for everyone, and that’s not just okay, that’s AMAZING!
■
There’s a close friend of mine (we go way back) whose Expatriate husband can’t STAND the very sight of me. Considering the fact that we have mutual alliances, we run into each other occasionally. And she’s in the strategic Media industry so that’s even more than often.
First time he sighted me at a dinner party for one of my close buddies (and just so you know, my sensory organs are exceedingly sharp), I heard him whisper to his wife (my friend), “I HATE THE VERY SIGHT OF THAT GUY.
FUCKING HOMOSEXUAL.
I HOPE HE’S NOT YOUR FRIEND”. And I knowingly walked up to them with the biggest welcoming smile plastered all over my face, hugged my friend, shook his hand in a limp shake which he withdrew quickly like I had the Coronavirus and moved away.
I thought to myself, “White man? That’s a first!”
They usually find me intriguing and assume I’m some sort of RockStar!
The other day, we were at a Champagne oriented event and forgetting my resolve, I ran up to her.
Hugged her. Told her how I had missed her (very true) and and moment I tried to greet her husband, she laughed and said to all our other friends around us,
“MY HUSBAND DOESN’T LIKE DENRELE..”
I decided to break the ice again. Tried to say hi. This time he backed hurriedly away from me with an irritated demeanor and moved further down the patio muttering
“I’LL KILL SOMEONE…” and something else I didn’t quite catch!
Everyone noticed this but it still fell down to this look; MY WIDE CLEVER FOOL LAUGH! And wholeheartedly too!
Suddenly, a group of friends sighed me, screamed my name and whirled me away to meet their foreign friends who were enthusiastically THRILLED to meet me!
■
You are not for everyone, and that’s okay. The world is full of people who, no matter what you do, will point blank NOT like you.
Being disliked by some is simply a byproduct of being authentic to who you truly are.
But it is also filled with people who will LOVE YOU FIERCELY!
You are not for everyone, and that’s okay!
Nollywood actress Uche Nnanna has called out her colleagues in the movie industry for not celebrating with fellow actress, Ibiwari Etuk as she escaped from the dreaded hands of kidnappers.

Ibiwari stated that she was kidnapped in January, but thankfully regained her freedom.
In her words;
”On the 6th, 7th and 8th of January 2020, I walked through the valley of the shadow of death but God didn’t abandon me, he came through for me. That I came out alive and unhurt is a testimony. All I could do in those most terrifying days was plead for my life to those 4 boys of the underworld while praying to God to confuse them enough not to cause me bodily harm.
“I lost all my money since my 3 ATMs were in my car when I was taken with the car but I didn’t care my life was most important. I was dehydrated and starved even though they offered me food and water I refused for fear of passing out. I couldn’t sleep because of the terrifying sounds I hear right inside the bush both at night and in the day time notwithstanding the constant threat of being killed if the ransom they asked for wasn’t paid.
“I cried until my eyes dried out, why are some HUMANS wicked? Why?
I still freak out a little when it’s dark but I am fighting it with the help of the people around me. I am a strong woman not because I am literally strong but because I am still here and pushing on.
“So many went through this process and never came out alive to tell the tale.
Thank you, lord for everything indeed it ENDED IN PRAISE to your glory
I will forever worship and be grateful to you…”

A Nigerian woman, Miss Seigha Atia has had her leg amputated after her ex-lover of Victor Oba, a cousin to a former First Lady, Patience Jonathan, allegedly rammed into her with his car.
Oba, who is the Manager of the First Lady’s hotel, Aridolf Hotels and Spars, reportedly hit 23-year-old Atia with his Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV), damaging her left leg beyond treatment.
He was said to have left her for dead and sped off afterwards. He was subsequently arrested but was later freed by the police. The victim’s lawyer, Aluzu Ebikebuna, confirmed the amputation of his client’s leg.
Narrating the incident, the victim said: “On the day of the incident, we had an argument and he called me and asked me to come outside of our gate to get the rest of my things in his car.
The next thing, he drove his car into me with speed. He hit me against our gate, held me there and did not reverse his car despite the fact that I was screaming in pains.
He later reversed and I fell to the ground and he zoomed off. My neighbors, who watched what happened screamed for help and came to my rescue. This relationship lasted for four months.
But I decided to quit when I discovered that he was a violent person. He had hit me once that was when everything started to take a nosedive.“
First off, it’s important to know that for newborns, it’s normal for them to prefer their mom over their dad, this is because aside from spending 9 months inside their mother’s tummy, newborns look to their mothers for their care and nutrition.
Babies also tend to switch from one parent to another, since they’re at the age where their brains are still developing, and they are still getting to know the world as well as the people around them.
That’s why dads also need to spend time with their kids, so that their babies will become familiar with how they look, how they smell, and they’ll slowly become more comfortable in their father’s presence.
What can dad do to be closer to their newborn?
Some dads might feel bad or jealous that their child prefers to be with their mom rather than their dad. But it’s important to know that it’s not a competition between the parents. Both of you are equally loved by your child, it’s just that dads need to make an extra effort to let their child be more comfortable around them.
For dads who want to get closer to their child, they should try to spend more quality time with your child, and make it a point to bond with them everyday. It also helps if they can handle the responsibility of putting their child to sleep, so that not only will their child be comfortable around them, their wife will also have time to rest after a long day of taking care of their newborn.
Letting the child get used to their father taking care of them will help build an emotional connection, and will enable the child to understand that their dad is also someone who they can depend on, and someone who will keep them safe.
Familiarity is important for kids, especially at such a young age, since the bonds that they build while they’re young will last until the rest of their lives. So in order to build a loving relationship with their child, it’s always best to start early.
The president renewed the pledge in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, in Abuja on Monday.
Shehu stated that the Nigerian leader spoke at a High Level Breakfast Dialogue on ‘‘Stop the War on Children Affected by Armed Conflicts, Dividend of Silencing the Guns’’, a side event during the 33rd AU Summit.
The programme was co-sponsored by the Governments of Nigeria, Uganda and Norway, the AU Commission and Save the Children.
Speaking at the occasion, Buhari said: ”A number of school girls from Chibok and Dapchi earlier abducted by Boko Haram have regained their freedom.
”We commend the gallant efforts of the MultiNational Joint Task Force and the partners in supporting the reintegration of the girls.
”Let me categorically reassure you of the steadfast commitment of the Government of Nigeria to ensure the freedom of all kidnapped children from the shackles of Boko Haram.
”We will not relent until every child, boy or girl, every Nigerian adult in custody of Boko Haram, is freed,” Buhari declared.
The president urged African countries and stakeholders on the continent to work fervently towards strengthening the protection of children from the six grave violations during armed conflict.
According to him, the six grave violations are killing and maiming of children, recruitment or use of children as soldiers, sexual violence against children, abduction of children, attacks against schools or hospitals, and denial of humanitarian access for children.
Buhari expressed concern that these grave violations against children have continued unabated.
”It is for this reason that the Nigerian government has severally condemned, and is combating frontally the dreadful activities of terrorist groups like Boko Haram and the so-called Islamic State.
”Of course, the severity of these grave violations varies from country to country.
”The incidence of a single violation of children rights in any country is an indelible dent on the African consciousness and is to be deplored and condemned,” he said.
While reminding AU Member States of their commitments to protecting children affected by armed conflicts in Africa, Buhari reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the protection of children in armed conflict zones.
He also outlined some concrete measures taken by Nigeria towards tackling the root causes of child soldiers and the misfortune of out-of-school children.
”To stem the tide of out-of-school children Nigeria embarked on an all-inclusive reconstruction of schools vandalised by the ravaging terrorist activities of Boko Haram, while returning children are rehabilitated and reintegrated into society.
”Our Nomadic Education policy is also being implemented to reduce the number of out-of-school children.
”We have also prioritised de-radicalisation and demobilisation of ex-combatant children of Boko Haram insurgents,” he said.
The Nigerian leader also called on the AU Peace and Security Council to energetically champion the strategy to stop the war on children and adopt the Child Protection Architecture within the African Peace and Security Architecture and the Roadmap on Silencing the Guns.
”The call to action is now for accountability by all African States to the rights of the children caught up in wars.
”Let us stop the war on children. This is a wake-up call for us all to create the enabling environment for rooting out the impact of armed conflicts against our children across the continent,” he said.
