Few hours after she was rescued from the collapsed Odunfa, Lagos building on Wednesday, 89-year-old grandmum, Mrs Mistura Amodu, died at the General Hospital, Lagos at around 05:00pm on Wednesday
According to The Nation, a family member, who was with her when she breathe her last, said Maami, as she was fondly called, was hale and hearty after she was rescued from the debris of the building.
“Despite the fact she was covered in dust, her voice was still audible. She was very fine and I never thought she was going to die. She still asked if we were able to save some things but I pleaded with her to relax instead of talking. I really can’t remember the last thing she said but it is a painful exit. Even my brother had bought the medicine for her as prescribed by the doctor but she is no more to use any of it. I will miss maami. She was strong till the end,” she said.
Her daughter, Mrs Fatimah Ishola, who walked out of the collapsed building, said she was having her bath when the incident happened.
She said:
“I live on the first floor with my family and mother. I served my mother breakfast and went to the bathroom when I heard a part of the building cracking. As I stepped out of the bathroom, the building collapsed. Sincerely, I don’t know how I came out. It was God.
“It was after I came out I realised my mother was still trapped inside. I really wished she survived. But, what can I do? I don’t have anything even the money I managed to bring from our house has been stolen from me.
The cloth on me is not mine. A friend gave me yesterday after coming out of the building almost naked. I was my mother’s first and last. While I grew up, she was my sister. I was her confidant. It is so unfortunate.
The only time she stepped out of the house was Wednesdays when she visits my father in our family house. The only reason I moved into the building five years ago was because they just renovated it,” she said.
Some residents are counting their losses in the incident.
Alhaja Nimotallah Garuba, who operates a restaurant on the ground floor, said she was in debt. She said she had spent N1 million for her daughter’s wedding Aso Ebi coming up next Saturday.
“I went to the market last week for the cloth and told people to come for their attire on Tuesday. I have not given up to five people. How will I repay them? I have been operating my restaurant for over 20 years and I have never witnessed this incident. Myself and 11 of my caterers slept on a pavement. We were like vigilantes throughout the night. I need help. Everything is gone,” Alhaja Garuba cried.
Fatimah Usman, who is squatting in a friend’s place with her family, said it wasn’t going to last for long. She said:
”The last time I squatted with a friend was when I was young. My friend is a married woman. How long will I continue to do that? The government should please help us. My husband also slept with a friend. We don’t have a kobo to get another apartment.”
Another occupant, Habib Kareem, just moved in last Sunday with his wife.Habib said he had paid N350, 000 of the N360,000 rent.
He said:
“As I finished praying on Sunday night, Mr Ahmed, who rented the flat to me asked for the N10,000 balance but I ignored him. I have spent N150, 000 on the apartment before I moved in. I thought I was already capable of taking responsibilities now I am back squatting with my brother while my wife went to her mother’s place.”
Mr Bayo Adedoyin spent only two days in the two-bedroom flat he rented. He said his family had gone to church before the incident happened.
For Shukurat Ishola, her hope of furthering her education is dim.
“Our house collapsed; my grandmother died. We have nothing. I just gained admission to study Medicine and Surgery at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) and I don’t know if that can be possible now. We don’t have the money to take our grandmother’s body from the mortuary. We are that poor now. We need help. The government should treat our matter with utmost urgency,”she said.
The burial of 55-year-old Mrs. Ayoka Buhari, who had died after a brief illness, in the Mowe area of Ogun State had to be put on hold after the family approached the management of the TOS Funerals, which manages a morgue in the Gbagada General Hospital, for the corpse around 8am, the body could not be found.
According to PUNCH Metro, the corpse had been mistakenly swapped for another. A relative, Folorunsho Adeoluwa, expressed sadness over the incident, threatening legal action against the owners of the morgue.
Adeoluwa said the mother of four had died on Wednesday, October 14, and was taken to the morgue. He said:
“The family was asked to come for the corpse at 8.30am today (Thursday), but when we got there, we discovered that they were not ready for us. Later, they said the woman’s husband must show up before they release her corpse.
“Her daughter, however, insisted on seeing the corpse. They brought out a corpse and she raised the alarm that it was not her mother.”
The publication was told that after much enquiries, a worker in the morgue, identified as Femi, explained that there was a problem of
mistaken identity.
He was said to have told the family that the corpse was wrongly tagged and given to another man, who lost his wife. It was gathered that the deceased’s husband and a few family members rushed down to Matori, Mushin, to meet the man who was suspected to have taken the corpse.
It was learnt that on getting to the place, the family discovered that the corpse had been buried.
“The man said he had buried his wife and he could not exhume her body unless the family showed him the picture of the corpse they have in the mortuary.
“We all rushed back to the morgue and took a picture of the corpse that the hospital wanted to give us. The woman’s husband has not returned from the place,” Adeoluwa added.
PUNCH Metro was told around 4pm that the first family had identified the photo of the corpse as theirs, but it had not been established if the buried one was that of Mrs. Buhari.
A relative, Deborah Ogunfowora, berated morgue managers for being “careless.” She added that the family had paid all the money for the one week the deceased stayed in the facility.
She said:
“They don’t know their jobs. They are just making excuses. They said the two corpses were brought in at the same time and the mistake happened when they were tagging them.
“Right now I have been getting calls from those at home to know what is going on and I can’t pick their calls. Everybody is apprehensive.”
The spokesperson for the morgue, identified simply as Olumide, said the corpse had been found and the family was going for the burial around 7pm.
An unauthorised new biography of queen bee, Beyonce claims to know the real story behind her sister, Solange and husband, Jay Z’s infamous lift bust-up.
Celebrity journalist, J. Randy Taraborrelli has written about Beyonce and Jay Z‘s marriage in the unauthorised biography, Becoming Beyonce where he alleges Solange attacked Jay Z because he wanted to party with Rihanna and Beyonce said no.
“Why can’t you go home?” Solange is reported to have said, according to the New York Daily News.
That prompted the rapper to tell her to mind her own business, according to Taraborrelli, and Solange flew into a rage and attacked him when the elevator doors closed.
This is what I refer to as the “Irony of life”. They are sworn enemies and they don’t seem like they’d ever be friends in this world and the one to come but yet… they share the same birthday date. How ironical!
Kim Kardashian, who and her family virtually took a lotta things from Amber Rose shares the same birthday date with her. You wondering what kinda things? Well, lemme tell you two obvious ones, Kanye West and Tyga! Hope you catch my drift? Lol.(Tyga was her best friend’s boyfriend though).
Wishing her a happy birthday in the most sarcastic and adorable way, her ex/baby papa, Wiz Khalifa took to twitter and wrote:
On why it has taken her a long time to join the growing ranks of new generation movie producers in the country, Genevieve says:
“I chose to be an actress. Acting was what I had always wanted to do. I don’t think that I ever imagined myself producing a film. I love acting. If the Nigerian movie industry was as stable as it should be, I probably would have been on the set of a movie every day of my life and not be bothered about what goes on behind the camera. So it is a matter of choice and preference.”
On marriage.
Marriage does not seem to be in her agenda yet, asked when she would finally take the plunge, the actress replies that contrary to speculations, she has not ruled out marriage. But that she would make up her mind as soon as she meets the right person.
“I haven’t found the right man yet. When he comes, I’ll get married,” she says.
I think the relationship of the duo shoulda hit a year now and well, they’ve been going strong during this period and they still showing us that they going stronger.
