“I have houses in at least 188 countries in the world, so I am richer than Bill Gates.” (Adeboye).
Recently, a friend took me to the jewel-in-the-crown of the Redeemed Christian Church of God; a glitzy parish called “City of David” in Victoria Island, Lagos.
Displayed resplendently on a wall in the church-office is a design of their current building project; a 14 storey architectural extravaganza titled “Trinity Towers.”
Is Redeemed still a church or is it now essentially a business concern? The Trinity Towers project shows the lines are now totally blurred. Jesus warns: “No one can serve two masters. You cannot serve both God and Money.” (Matthew 6:24).
Nevertheless, this Tower of Babylon being built with church funds is designed both for the worship of God and for the worship of money.
The project is an appeal to crass commercialism; a blatant celebration of wealth. In this poverty-stricken Nigeria, the foundation of the building alone is expected to cost over 2 billion naira. Side-by-side with a 5,000 seat auditorium for church services are high-brow restaurants, cafeterias, indoor swimming pools, cinema halls, gymnasiums, retail shops, games arcades, lawn tennis courts, relaxation spots, and a helipad as the crowning glory. Of what relevance is all this “supermarket” in a church?
Anointing for carnality
A church-member, overwhelmed by the grandeur of it all, buttonholed me in the hallway. I did not know him from Adam, nevertheless, he held me hostage as he waxed lyrical about how the Redeemed Church was, to use his words: “taking over.” “We have already got the vice-presidency,” he said. (The vice-president of Nigeria is now a Redeemed pastor). “Next we will get the presidency,” he continued; “and then we will get DSTV;” (a South African satellite television network).
The anointing for this pride of life flows right from the top. The General Overseer of the Redeemed Church is Pastor Adeboye. A few years ago, he decided he needed a billion naira without which his “work of God” could not be done. So he confounded the Christian faith by establishing a “millionaire’s club.” To be a member, you had to hand over a million naira to him in Jesus’ name.
Thereafter, he upped the ante by calling for a “billionaire’s club.” He announced that he would be building an auditorium that can only be described as “fantabulous.” It would be a ginormous three kilometers in length and three kilometers in breadth. This project is clearly more designed to get Adeboye into the Guinness Book of World Records than it is to get the members of Redeemed into the kingdom of God.
Declared Adeboye on that occasion: “We need 1 billion naira from ten people. If you are one of them, please see my personal Secretary after we finish today.” Who are those likely to have this kind of money to give in the Nigeria of today except those who have cornered public funds? Thereafter, an announcer sought to know the members of the church who were “willing to join hands with our Father in the Lord to build a new auditorium to God’s glory.”
Vanity upon vanity
The proposed auditorium is not to the glory of God. The proposed auditorium is to the glory of Adeboye. Adeboye’s project is reminiscent of Saul’s, who built a monument to himself. (1 Samuel 15:12). Nowhere in the entire New Testament was money ever collected for putting up a building. Money was only collected for the poor. The temple of God is no longer a physical building. The temple of God is now Jesus Christ.
Pastor Adeboye is getting increasingly carried away by vanity. I have a tape of a question-and-answer session he had with his church-workers a number of years ago in which he boasted that the time would soon come when, before anybody could aspire to be president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, he would first have to talk to Redeemed Church. Nothing in the scriptures can be construed as suggesting this as one of the stated objectives of Jesus Christ.
A Redeemed church-member told me of another meeting he attended captioned: “A Day Out with the G.O.” It was a dinner for financial sponsors of one of the annual “Holy Ghost Festivals.” Pastor Adeboye boasted tongue-in-cheek on that occasion that the time would soon come when the Queen of England would plead to join Redeemed in order to work as an usherette. The audience reportedly responded with wild applause and shouts of “Amen.”
Richer than Bill Gates
At the just-concluded 63rd Annual Convention of the Redeemed Church, Adeboye declared that he is now richer than Bill Gates; widely acknowledged as the richest man in the world. He said: “I have houses in at least 188 countries in the world, where we have our churches, so I am richer than Bill Gates. Each time I visit these countries, my children would be struggling and saying daddy, come and stay with me.”
These “houses” don’t belong to Adeboye; they belong to Redeemed church. Knowingly or unknowingly, Adeboye distorts the gospel. Jesus says: “All who have given up home or brothers and sisters or father and mother or children or land for me will be given a hundred times as much. They will also have eternal life.” (Matthew 19:29).
However, Jesus words are spirit. (John 6:63). Therefore, his “houses” are entirely spiritual, while Adeboye’s are physical. Jesus does not make his disciples richer than Bill Gates. Instead, he says: “God will bless you people who are poor. His kingdom belongs to you! But you rich people are in for trouble. You have already had an easy life!” (Luke 6:20/24).
Adeboye continued: “If I announce here that tomorrow morning, I need a car to travel to the new auditorium, how many cars do you think would be made available to me by you my children? Those of you that do not have a car of your own, very soon, God will give you your own cars. So, I am appealing to you to become an incurable soul winner before you leave this convention ground and your cup will overflow.”
Anathema to Christ
This is nothing but the enticing word of man’s wisdom. Believers don’t preach the gospel in order to receive cars. We do because God commands that we do so.
Jesus had neither chariots nor horses. He had no lands and houses. Indeed, he warned a prospective disciple who wanted to follow him they would not be staying at the “Sheraton Hotel:” “The foxes have holes, and the birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” (Matthew 8:20).
Jesus does not speak like Adeboye. He says: “A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. It is enough for a disciple that he be like his teacher, and a servant like his master.” (Matthew 10:24-25). Jesus’ example is anathema to Adeboye’s declaration that he is now the richest man in the world.
This is the word of Jesus the Adeboyes of this age choose to ignore: “It’s terribly hard for rich people to get into the kingdom of heaven! In fact, it’s easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to get into God’s kingdom.” (Matthew 19:23-24).

17 year old Stella Kambi (Pictured Left) Died while trying to Drag 14 year old Bonheur Musungay from a flooded pit at Thorpe Marshes on the outskirts of Norfolk, UK. The incident happened on Wednesday, August 13th.
Stella’s effort was a waste as Bonheur also died. Stella’s sister Claudine, 16, who was part of the attempted rescue, luckily survived.
Stella’s parents, who arrived in the UK as refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2008, are completely devastated at the loss of their daughter.
“We will miss her so much and hope our faith will get us through. But we are very proud of her”
Engele and Daniel Aketo also revealed their daughter had successfully rescued another boy a year ago. They said Stella and Claudine had not been swimming but sunbathing on the beach next to the boy.
When Bonheur got into trouble, both girls, who were strong swimmers, dived in to save him. Claudine survived but Stella was dragged under.
Stella attended City College Norwich after leaving Thorpe St Andrew High School and was studying nursing at college and wanted to be a pediatrician.
Emergency services launched a major search and rescue operation to find the pair but were unable to save them. Police and firefighters are now investigating what happened.
Detective Sergeant Sarah Knights said people should take care around open water. “Without wanting to prejudge what has happened here, I would urge people to take the utmost care around water and to be aware of hidden dangers such as fast flowing currents and underwater obstacles and weeds,” she added.

The leader of Nigeria’s Boko Haram Sect has denied being killed or ousted as chief of the jihadist group in an audio recording released Sunday attributed to him by security experts.
In the eight-minute Hausa recording, Shekau denies claims by president of Chad, Idriss Deby who claimed that Shekau had been replaced as Shekau proceeds to call the president a “hypocrite” and a “tyrant”.
“It is indeed all over the global media of infidels that I am dead or that I am sick and incapacitated and have lost influence in the affairs of religion,” he said in the recording released on social media.
“It should be understood that this is false. This is indeed a lie. If it were true, my voice wouldn’t have been heard, now that I am speaking.”
Chad President, Deby declared on August 12 that efforts to combat neighbouring Nigeria’s Boko Haram jihadists had succeeded in “decapitating” the group and would be wrapped up “by the end of the year”.
“Gratitude be to Allah and with his help, I have not disappeared. I am still alive and I am not dead. And I will not die until my time appointed by Allah is up,” Shekau said in the message.
The SITE Intelligence Group verified the authenticity of the message, and an AFP correspondent with extensive experience of reporting Boko Haram said it exactly resembled Shekau’s voice in previous recordings.

A passenger plane has reportedly gone missing in bad weather over the remote eastern region of Papua, with 54 persons on board.

I had never heard of the fellow called Skiibii before the news of his ‘death’ trended on Friday 14th August 2015. With such a horrible moniker for a real name, one could not care really what his name was, truth be told.
But within a couple of hours, the name Skiibii became the most popular name on cybersphere in Nigeria, giving the artiste a desired ‘Five Star’ Fifteen Minutes of Fame.
It was first reported by blogger Linda Ikeji on Friday morning that Skiibii had passed on; news she said she confirmed from the Five Star Music spokesperson, Soso Soberekon.
Since it was supposedly a valid confirmation by Linda Ikeji, Nigeria’s top blogger, it was only a matter of seconds before a sympathetic buzz started about the artiste’s ‘death’.
I read about it like everyone else and since I did not know who the guy was, I mumbled a sympathetic prayer for his soul and moved on with my business. But the initial picture released of the dude on the floor had me a bit disturbed then as to why someone who just died, with the blood barely cold in his body, would have that kind of bizarre picture immediately posted on social media.
It didn’t make sense to me and I told a friend next to me that whoever released that picture deserved to be flogged. To me, it was in bad taste and would also be the last picture anyone would remember of the artiste in years to come; that is if anyone would bother to.
Perhaps being a slow news day, many people started putting up profile pics of the dead Skiibii, as is wont with such trends. But Linda Ikeji came back a a few minutes later to report that Skiibii was not dead, with barely contained disdain in her write up. She suggested that it was a publicity stunt and that was when people began to really look at the case with ‘another eye’.
The press statement from Five Star Music, refuting the death of the lad did not help matters. The damage had been done.
98% of the people believe it was all a publicity stunt. And that notion will be hard to dispel. I have my suspicions too that it is a publicity stunt, engineered to shore up the buzz of a new artiste trying to blow. And why should I not think so?
First, the initial picture of the ‘dead’lad on the floor, at close inspection, gives away the stupidity of those who were around the artiste when he was thought to be dead. So, in their village, when a person slumps and dies, the first thing they do would be to snap pictures? There was no one smart enough to attempt to resuscitate the lad, by tearing off his shirt, removing his shoes, even stripping him to his boxers just to ensure that he had a fighting chance of resuscitation? The only thing the dense persons near him could do was to snap a picture and even ‘conveniently’ have the head of the ‘dead’ artiste away from the centre table? The dude was even half-laid on the rug!
Secondly, the coincidence of the artiste having a new single released just a couple of days before his ‘death’ and even being on a top radio station in Lagos the day before to promote his single, was just too close. Haba! Of course, one can safely say this because he didn’t really die as reported and this leaves room for such conjecture which points to a gradual summation of a publicity stunt ill-executed.
Thirdly, the other clue Linda has already pointed out in her blog, the coincidence of Skiibii wearing the same gear he had on two weeks before in a picture and still having the same gear on on the day of his death to the last thread and belt! Haba! Well, I guess we now know that he likes to re-rock clothes?
The Five Star Music statement did not say which hospital Skiibii is admitted presently. For the public to believe that this was not a ruse, we need to know the hospital, the name of the doctor who is treating him, the nature of his illness and how it happened. That is how such is done elsewhere. This is a matter of a huge credibility problem for the artiste and even Five Star Music as a company and treating this with kids gloves has the potential of destroying careers on that label.
For now, this smacks of a publicity stunt gone awry. While I do not wish the artiste any ill luck but the best of his health, if indeed my doubts and those of millions of people are dispelled, it is instructive to note that it is not in anyway wrong to ask these nagging questions. There are lessons to be learned from all of this.
Celebrities, especially those in the music sector in Nigeria, have degraded the art of PR to the most asinine of stunts and stories over the past couple of years. They throw lies out to those gullible enough to believe them and laugh in glee when such lies trend. Na una all wey dey believe come be mugu!
It’s time we begin to question these stories and shame such persons behind such when they are found to be fake.
Going back to this Skiibii in question, it would be safe to say that something really may well die in his world, with the negative angst this story of his has generated. His career. It’s Dead On Arrival.
It’s his brief now to get a life.

Just few days ago, Chadian president, Idriss Deby revealed that Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau had been ousted and replaced with a new leader.
According to him:
“There is someone apparently called Mahamat Daoud who is said to have replaced Abubakar Shekau and wants to negotiate with the Nigerian government.”

Everyone knows the game of Peek-A-Boo, I See You! Well, 26 year old domestic worker, Ubong Etu Nbomang wasn’t so lucky to win the game as he was caught peeking at his madam while she was bathing.
In the process of being caught, the devil lead houseboy unfortunately sprained his Spinal Cord due to fright of him being caught red handed by his Madam’s friend.
He has been hospitalised at the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, Delta State, after falling and breaking his spine.
His boss, according to Punch, is a top federal civil servant in one of the neighbouring states. The houseboy was alleged to have made holes around the bathroom door, through which he peeped at his boss whenever she was having a shower.
It was learnt by the publication that Nbomang had climbed on a platform to have a vantage view of his boss who is in her 30s.
A female friend to Nbomang’s boss, was said to have walked in and met nobody in the sitting room.
On hearing the sound of dropping water, she approached her friend’s bathroom out of curiosity, only to find the young man peeping.
The boss’s friend, (name withheld), who spoke to the publication after the incident, said as Nbomang was peeping, he held his private organ.
The guest, who trades in cooking utensils at the Ogbeogonogo Modern Market, said she shouted at him: “Nbomang, are you peeping at your madam?”
Nbomang, jumped off where he was and slipped on the wet tiled floor when he heard the visitor’s voice.
The unsuspecting boss, who was shocked by her worker’s groans, was said to have rushed out of the bathroom half-naked. Her friend, said,
“I said to her: ‘So, you are not aware he has been here watching you as you were busy having your bath? I met him peeping, after asking for who was in the house without any response. I have been here for more than 15 minutes now without him knowing.”’
As she was telling her friend all these, Nbomang, still groaning in pains, asked his boss to forgive him and take him to hospital.
“Out of pity, the madam called her driver to take Nbomang to a hospital, while she later joined them at the hospital,” her friend added.
Speaking at the FMC, the boss, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said she was going to sack him.
She said, “Before now, I used to see him looking at me but I didn’t think otherwise because I saw it as nothing. It was when he was confessing that I got to know that he was the one that bore tiny holes on my door, which until this incident I never knew of.”
Nbomang, who also spoke from his hospital bed, pleaded,
“Help me beg my madam, na devil work. Na my madam beauty deceive me.”
Authorities of the hospital said that the injury could be treated.

The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), Federal Operation Unit Zone C, on Saturday destroyed 600 cartons of smuggled frozen turkey and chicken in Benin, Edo State.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the NCS Comptroller of the zone, Mr Victor Dimka said the items were seized on Friday, Aug. 14, 2015, along the Benin-Ekiadolor road in Edo State.
“The duty paid value (DPV) of the items are N5.76 million and the items were destroyed at customs house destruction site, in compliance with Federal Government policy on importation of frozen products (chicken and turkey),” Dimka was quoted to have said.
The federal government had banned the importation of frozen chicken and turkey in 2003, but with little or no enforcement since then, the products were still available in Nigerian markets. However, the NCS has resumed enforcement in recent months.

Well, it’s being reported newly that the Presidency has denied the reports that President Muhammed Buhari promised to declare his assets if he resumed office 100 days after.
The special adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on media and publicity, Femi Adesina spoke in an interview with Kayode Ogundamisi, revealing that the All Progressives Congress not the President promised to declare his assets publicly if elected.
According to him:

“You need to get his words right, go and check all that the president said during the campaign, in no place would you see it attributed to him as a person,”
“But then there is a document by his party, the All Progressives Congress, saying he would declare publicly, so we need to set that right, it’s a declaration by his party.
“Now what does the law require?
The law requires public officers to declare their assets; he has done that. But his party has a document that says he would do it publicly.“There is a procedure for that, and the procedure is that you first declare, code of conduct (bureau) would verify and after that, if you want to make it public, the onus lies on you to say release. The procedure has to be followed.He has declared, and it is deposited with the code of conduct bureau and they need to verify. Let’s come to that time when code of conduct would say we have completed verification.”
Counter to his statement, it will be recalled that during the 2015 electioneering campaign, President Buhari is quoted to have openly promised to declare his assets publicly within the first 100 days of his administration.
“I believe if Nigeria does not kill corruption; corruption will kill Nigeria. I pledge to: Publicly declare my assets and liabilities and encourage my political appointees to also publicly declare their assets and liabilities,”

A distance learning student of the University of Ibadan slumped at the Adebayo Akande e-Centre, Ikeja, Lagos, after waiting for hours to write the examination.
The 100 level student of political science, identified as Pelewura Bolaji, was said to have written the first paper for the day before the incident happened.
An official of the school, who identified himself as Mr. Olayinka Kehinde, said he was the only UI official at the centre to supervise the examination. He said the matter had been reported to the school authorities and he was awaiting further directive concerning the examination.
It was discovered that while the body of the student was lying down in a car within the premises, examination was still going on.
One of the examiners confirmed that there was an instruction that the examination should continue.
A student, who simply identified himself as Tony, said, “The management of the centre had earlier told us that the examination might not hold successfully in Lagos due to some challenges and that they subsequently notified the authorities.”
Some of the students alleged that they were made to pay medical fees, but expressed concern that the management failed to put in place necessary medical facilities in case of emergency.
The victim was later confirmed dead at the Lagoon Hospital, Ikeja.

Tim Young and Paul Hullings (pictured above) from New Jersey are hearty firefighters that live for their work. They once worked tirelessly for 12 hours to clear out a fire.
After which, being completely exhausted, they went to a diner around 6 am to request the strongest cup of coffee the diner could muster.
Their waitress that day was Liz Woodward and she just happened to overhear the two firefighters discussing their tiresome battle. Eventually, when Tim and Paul went to pay, they were quite surprised. Instead of their bill, they were given this message. (Pictured Below):
As Tim and Paul read this message, their eyes fill up with tears. They thank the kind waitress for her warm gesture. Then Tim went on Facebook to recount the event :
“Such a selfless and kind act. I definitely urge my friends to make a trip out and support the business, and if Liz happens to be your waitress, tip big.
But the story doesn’t end there! The firefighter was told by someone on the Facebook post that Liz’s father, Steve, is quadriplegic and has been paralyzed for 5 years and that Liz set up a donation page a few months earlier to fund a wheelchair accessible vehicle so that she can take her father places.
Tim then urged people on Facebook and his colleagues to donate to Liz’s crowd-fund : “Turns out, the young lady who gave us a free meal is really the one that could use the help…”
Then the unbelievable happened: within a few days, she had gathered more than $70,000 – far more than the $17,000 needed for a wheelchair accessible van! Liz and her family couldn’t be more grateful to the two firemen.
“All I did was pay for their breakfast. I didn’t expect anything more than a smile,” says the waitress “It goes to show that you just have to be kind to each other and that even the smallest gesture can change a life.”
