The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, on Friday, urged men of the force to protect themselves against attacks.
He said the police officers have the right to defend themselves in case of physical danger.
Adamu gave the charge during an assessment tour of the FCT Police Command.
The IGP who alleged that the #EndSARS protesters were out to demoralise the personnel, also encouraged the operatives who had abandoned the streets over the past few days following the killing of some policemen in the violence that rocked the country.
He disclosed that the government and the Nigeria Police Force would soon roll out packages for the families of the deceased officers.
“The unity of this country lies in the support that is given to police officers because if you are demoralised, the tendency is for criminals to take over the public space and the country is relying on us to make sure that the public space is not taken over by the criminals. So no amount of provocation, no amount of insult would make us shy away from our responsibilities.
“Inasmuch as we are aware that the government is behind us; so, we would encourage you to keep performing your duties. We would encourage you to be professional, to be civic, but if anybody touches you, if anybody comes to assault you, you can also protect yourself.
“When we talk of human rights, the police are human; so, the rights of police officers would also be protected. So, we are sending the message that legally, we have the right to protect ourselves,” the IGP said.

Governor of Plateau state, Simon Lalong, says public and private properties valued at N75 billion were lost to looters in the aftermath of the #EndSARS protest.
Gov. Simon Lalong
Lalong disclosed this on Friday at the government House, Jos, during an interactive session with the youths.
He said the 75 billion naira was arrived at by experts after a preliminary evaluation of the level of destruction and looting done to properties in the state.
“The level of destruction and carnage is unbelievable and unacceptable. We are still trying to carry out a comprehensive evaluation of the total cost of the damage. However, the preliminary report by a team of experts I constituted has estimated the losses to be put at about 75 billion naira for now.
“Since coming into power, my administration has remained committed to pursuing the economic development of the state through youth empowerment and job creation.
“You would agree with me that the enormity of the challenges we face cannot be resolved overnight or with a wave of the hand. It is a process that all of us must collectively work together to achieve,” the governor said.
Sokoto state Governor, Aminu Tambuwal has said for Nigeria to overcome its challenges, the country’s present crop of leaders must address poverty and unemployment amongst the youths.
Tambuwal made the statement at the National inauguration of a project tagged ‘Project 20 million’, on Thursday in Abuja.
The governor, who was represented by his Special Assistant on Small and Medium Scale Enterprises, Akibu Dalhatu, said that for Nigeria to enjoy peace, these challenges must be addressed.
“In our country today, we are faced with banditry, rape cases, corruption, mismanagement of funds, nepotism, insurgency, and so many issues that threaten the unity of this country.
“Posterity will not fail to judge us all for our actions and inactions if we do not speak; it is we the people that will change Nigeria.
“The recent #EndSARS protests that rocked across the country and even beyond is a wake-up call to our leaders.
“The fact that they have pushed us so much to the wall shows that Nigerians are ready to start pushing back.
“We must adopt the participatory approach to budget making; before the budget office of the Presidency, the Ministry of Finance and Budget Planning finalise any budget, they must organise town hall meetings.
”This will gather the inputs of the people and determine priority areas.
“If the people participate in the budget-making process, they will also follow how the appropriated money is being spent and by this they will demand transparency and accountability from government officials.
“The people’s engagement in these processes strengthens and deepens democracy, and this ensures that the process of the rule of law is followed.”
A former leader of the Nigerian Senate, Victor Ndoma-Egba has pleaded with suspected hoodlums who looted his house in Calabar, to return is late father’s judges robe.
Egba revealed that the looting of his house was premeditated, and he notified security agencies of the planned attack on the house he started building in 1991 and moved into in 2009, but “nothing was done to stop it”.
Giving a full account of the incident, he said,
“At about 2 am (local time, as I was abroad) on Saturday 24th. October 2020 I received a text informing me that there were plans by arranged hoodlums to attack my residence in Calabar, that of Senator Gershom Bassey and a hotel owned by Senator John Owan Enor.
“I promptly forwarded the texts to Senators Bassey and Owan Enoh. I also called the security agencies in Calabar to apprise them of the information. Calabar from my information was already tense from the previous day’s break-in into warehouses storing COVID 19 palliatives and the subsequent breaching of shops and other businesses. The impending attack on Senators Bassey, Owan Enoh and I was already public knowledge as later that morning I got many calls to that effect.
“Thereafter I kept calling the security agencies by the hour when in spite of their assurances that they will secure my house there was no evidence of any security personnel in my vicinity. I understand, the times were indeed confounding for everybody.
“At about 2 pm the intruders broke into my house and looted it to the ground leaving only the bare floor. All the toilets, baths, pumps and indeed every imaginable fitting were removed as were items of furniture, clothing, a huge collection of mainly rare, out of print books, documents and historic photographs. They also removed all the windows, railings, family pictures and burglary proofs. Even my private chapel was not spared.
“They set the cars ablaze and parts of the building after more than four hours of interrupted operations in my house. It was methodical. Among the intruders were obviously electricians, plumbers, carpenters, motor mechanics, panel beaters and other tradesmen. Mercifully, no life was lost. I started building the house in 1991 and moved in in January, 2009.
“While not prejudging, and without prejudice to the work of the security agencies, I have forgiven the intruders, and pray fervently for them to find meaning, inner peace, and fulfilment in their lives. I only plead that they return my late father’s judges robes which they certainly would not be needed for anything and is surely incriminating.
“The destruction of my house was clearly premeditated, wanton and unjustifiable but I understand the anger in the land especially amongst our youths. However, if looting and burning my home will better their lives and bring positive change to our land, then it is a sacrifice my family and I gladly make.” He added.

The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has debunked reports by human rights organisation, Amnesty International, that police officer shot at End SARS protesters.
He described Amnesty’s report that police officers shot at peaceful protesters as “untrue, misleading and contrary to all available empirical evidence”.
In a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, the IGP said police officers acted professionally, exercised commendable restraints and some paid the supreme price for peace during the recent protests and ensuing violence in some parts of the country.
The statement, which was published on their official Twitter account reads,
“During the protests, officers of the Force used legitimate means to ensure that the protests were carried out in a peaceful manner and in most cases, physically protected and walked side-by-side with the protesters.
“Even when the protests turned violent in some parts of the country, the officers still maintained utmost restraint and did not use excessive force in managing the situations.
“Available Reports show that 22 police personnel were extra-judicially killed by some rampaging protesters and scores injured during the protests. Many of the injured personnel are in life-threatening conditions at the hospitals.
“205 police stations and formations including other critical private and public infrastructure were also damaged by a section of the protesters.
“Despite these unprovoked attacks, our police officers never resorted to use of unlawful force or shooting at the protesters as alleged in the report.
“It also beggars imagination that Amnesty International failed to mention or pay tribute to Police officers who were gruesomely murdered during the protests while serving their fatherland.
“The Force decries the discriminatory tendencies exhibited by Amnesty International as seen in the report.”

“Nothing wrong with cooking and washing but can school curriculums adjust these roles to portray mothers as doing more than washing and cleaning? Stop causing problems for families where the women want to do more than cooking and washing because these kids have been taught otherwise.
“I had a conversation with his teacher the next day. I was seriously wondering how her role as teacher in a school doesnt count as work and if she wasn’t supporting her family with her salary. Most of her response ended with “it’s true o”

There was a teenage boy who couldn’t be more than 13. A child. I was very young when I started hearing in Nigeria that the youths are the leaders of tomorrow, but it seems that tomorrow never comes. At this point, it’s about respecting the sacrifices of those who’ve gone, and trying to find a way so we don’t lose any more lives”.
