How Did Nigeria Do In This Year’s Africa Cup Of Nations?

The Africa Cup Of Nations is a fantastic tournament that took place this year in Egypt. The tournament lasted throughout June and some of July and has now come to an end with Algeria winning the cup.

Of course, our home nation Nigeria put on a really great performance throughout the tournament and are expected to do even better in the future. Here, we are going to look at how Nigeria performed in the 2019 Cup of Nations tournament. Keep reading to find out more about how this tournament went for Nigeria.

Group Stages

At the start of the competition, Nigeria were placed in Group, along with Madagascar, Guinea and Burundi. Of course, they did manage to come second in their group with 6 points just under Madagascar with 7 points.

Round Of 16

Once the Nigerian national team managed to make it through to the round of 16 knockouts, they shone brightly again. Beating Cameroon 3-2 in this stage helped to show just how impressive this squad is. The goals in this match were scored by Ighalo who scored two and Iwobi with one goal.

Quarter-Finals

Doing this country proud, Nigeria managed to make it through to the quarter finals stage of the tournament and came up against South Africa on 10^th July 2019. Two goals coming from Chukwueze and Troost-Ekong meant that Nigeria were able to beat South Africa and progress in the competition. This was very exciting for the nation as the team were doing us proud during the Africa Cup Of Nations.

Semi-Finals

Sadly, the semi-finals saw the downfall of Nigeria and led them to finish their time in the competition. This happened when they came up against Algeria on 14^th July and lost 2-1. This was a very close result with Igahlo scoring once again with a penalty.

Luckily, in the third-place playoff round, Nigeria managed to beat Tunisia who had lost to Senegal with 1-0 and took the third-place spot. This is a massive achievement for Nigeria who lost out on the top two spots to great teams Alergia and Senegal.

Final Verdict

As you can see, the Nigerian national team done incredibly well in the recent Africa Cup Of Nations tournament. This tournament has seen many great teams fall in the past and Nigeria have managed to come in third place which shows just how hard they have worked in training for this competition.

We are hoping that in the next Africa Cup Of Nations, we see Nigeria progress right through to the final and walk away with the title. For now, we look towards other matches on the world stage and hope that the Nigerian national football team can continue to progress as they have been over the past few years.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arrested 12 suspected Internet fraudsters in Lagos.

The suspects-Oluwaseun Ogunbunmi, Haruna Yusuf , Olubori Hassan, Wasiu Idowu, Basit Adeniran, Aina Olajuwon, Okafor Joseph, David Ado, Olamide Ogunseye, Opeyemi Ahmed , Monsuru Amao, Taiwo Rasak- were arrested on Thursday, August 29, 2019 in a rented three-bedroom apartment in the Ikotun area of Lagos, where they used as a Yahoo Yahoo school.

The arrest followed intelligence reports received from concerned members of the public about their alleged criminal activities.

During the raid, some of the suspects attempted to flee by hiding on the roof of their apartment.

Items recovered from the suspects include laptops and mobile phones.
The suspect will soon be charged to court.

An Italian car crash victim has died after being looked after by his parents for 31 years while he was in a coma.

Ignazio ‘Cito’ Okamoto from Brescia, was involved in a collision on March 19, 1988, and suffered a brain haemorrhage at the age of 22. His friend was killed in the crash but he survived the incident. Ignazio spent two years in a clinic, but his parents decided to take him home to try to bring him back to health.

He has now died at the age of 54 after suffering cardiac arrest. Ignazio’s mother Marina told La Stampa: ‘for 31 years we lived cut off from the world. The doctors had told us that he wouldn’t wake up but we cared for him every day, hoping that maybe…’

His father Hector, a 77-year old Mexican with Japanese roots, added: ‘now life has changed. I woke up this morning at 5am and I didn’t know what to do. I went to the garden to water the flowers. The last few nights I slept in Ignazio’s room, even though he is gone, to be near him.’

He said he had left his job in 1990 to look after his son, with Marina working to support the family. Mr Okomoto said he had never thought about euthanasia for his Ignazio.

A Dangote truck carrying a full load of cement lost control and crashed into a BRT Bus at Ogolonto area of Ikorodu, Lagos.

The BRT bus driver is currently in a critical state and at least ten passengers were injured and have been taken to the hospital by the Lagos state rapid response team.

The driver of the Truck eloped immediately after the incident which has caused heavy traffic on both sides of the road.

According to a statement from LASEMA, recovery operation is still ongoing

“On getting to the scene of the incident, a Dangote truck fully loaded with cement had a brake failure and had a head-on collision with a Primero blue Mass Transit bus with registration number LSR-228XS conveying 40 seated and 20 standing passengers.

“All passengers on board suffered various degrees of injuries with one female passenger losing her life and the driver suffered severe life-threatening injuries with his leg totally decapitated.

“The combined efforts of the Agency’s Assets (Medical Unit, Tiger unit, Papa Eagle and Cobra unit) are on ground working alongside LNSC, Nigeria Police, FRSC and LASTMA to ease vehicular movement and ensure a swift recovery of the accidented truck.

“Recovery operation ongoing”.
