Kingsway International Christian Centre, KICC, a 12,000-member megachurch in Britain headed by Nigeria’s Pastor Mathew Ashimolowo, lost $4.8 million to a Ponzi scheme after trustees carelessly invested money in it.
According to Premium Times, the scam was the brainchild of former Premier League soccer player, Richard Rufus, who used to be a defender for Charlton Athletic. He promised investors along with the church a return as high as 55%.
The Christian Post reporting the findings of an inquiry published 14 December by the Charity Commission for England and Wales revealed that KICC suffered a net loss of about $4.8m after its trustees invested over $6.1m between June 2009 and June 2010.
Rufus was a member and former trustee of the church. Rufus had guaranteed that the investments would earn a sizeable return totalling about 55% in a year. He was last year found guilty of defrauding about 100 investors out of a total of £8.7m in the £16-million investing scheme.
Kingsway International Christian Centre was the single largest investor in the scheme. The Charity Commission said in the report that the church’s trustees did not “exercise sufficient care when making the decisions to invest £5 million of the charity’s funds through the ex-trustee’s investment scheme“.
They did not follow all the principles expected of trustees to ensure they comply with their trustee duties under charity law when making those decisions,” the report said.
After the church entered into an Individual voluntary agreement with the ex-trustee in hopes he could pay back the money lost, the ex-trustee filed for bankruptcy and was declared bankrupt in 2013.

Some appointees of President Muhammadu Buhari would be relieved of their jobs in 2017, Daily Sun has gathered.
A top source in the Presidency specifically said appointees indicted or tainted with allegations of graft “would be shown the door and it will be sooner than later.”
But Presidency sources said such plan was not in the offing.
The sack, it was learnt, may be before the end of the first quarter of 2017.
The top official insisted “Buhari will shock Nigerians who think he cannot act on graft allegations against some of his appointees. He is only being fair since some of them are being investigated on those allegations and reports are being awaited…But, the President will drop some next year; that’s for sure.”
Meanwhile, Daily Sun also gathered that Buhari may not re-present Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Mustafa Magu, to the Senate for confirmation, after his rejection.
His replacement is a former Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), who was in charge of Operations (B) Department
Senate rejected Magu’s nomination on December 20, 2016, after lawmakers met in an Executive Session to consider a security report by the Department of State Services (DSS), which indicted the EFCC boss.
Thereafter, Senate spokesman, Abdullahi Sabi, said Magu’s rejection was based on a ‘worrisome’ security report, made available to the lawmakers by the DSS
Sabi said: “Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria wishes to inform the general public that based on security reports available to the lawmakers, we could not proceed and confirm the nomination of Ibrahim Magu as the executive chairman of EFCC.
“Accordingly, Senate, hereby, rejects the said nomination and has returned the said nomination to Mr. President for further action. There is no confusion here. We have said it is based on security reports.
“Please, all public officers go for security screening and we are saying based on security reports, we cannot proceed and confirm. We are rejecting it and returning it to Mr. President for further actions. That is just the statement. It is as simple as that. That is exactly what Senate has said and I do not have any other explanation more than this,” he said.
A status report from the DSS indicted Magu.
The report showed that Magu was allegedly involved in the disposal of seized assets from convicted corrupt public officials when immediate-past chairman of EFCC, Mr. Ibrahim Lamorde, held sway.
The report also questioned Magu’s integrity to lead President Buhari’s anti-corruption war. Also, the report said the EFCC, under Magu’s watch, is involved in human rights abuses.
However, a source hinted yesterday that a rejig was likely in order to smoothen alleged cold relationship between Buhari and All Progressives Congress (APC) national leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The source said the former Lagos State governor may be given some appointments to compensate him.
Sources from the APC disclosed that Buhari began the moves last Friday as a way of ending the internal crisis between him and Tinubu, to prevent it from affecting him (The President) and his party in 2019 general elections.
Reacting to this development, however, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, told Daily Sun yesterday that he was not aware of any cabinet shake-up, “If any cabinet reshuffle is to be carried out, it will be made public.”
But our source said the President will reshuffle his cabinet next year which will affect Ondo, Kogi and Lagos whereby Tinubu ‘s loyalists will be appointed as the new ministers in the affected states.
According to the source, “It was part of the plans designed by the President to pacify Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu so that the chances of the President in winning the election in 2019 will be high.
Another source, who confirmed the new development said, ‘’Baba (Buhari) knows Tinubu is an asset and he cannot toy with him politically especially now that 2019 is running nearer.

It is common to fail in relationships. There is nothing wrong in failing. It is important to learn from your mistakes in order to move further in your life.
But at the same time, it is good to realise why we fail in relationships. When you look back, if you see any corrections to be made to your behaviour, go ahead and do so.
This will help you avoid future relationship failures. Pain, hurt and depression are common reactions after a breakup. But soon after that small stage is over, it is better to rejoice. Here are some reasons why to be happy after a breakup.
Reasons why to be happy after a breakup are:
1. You Can Start Life Afresh: Remember that a breakup is a good chance to start everything again from scratch with a new person. This means that you can commit less mistakes this time as you have some experience.
2. You Can Learn From Your Mistakes: Treat it as an opportunity to learn what you have done wrong. In your future relationship, ensure that you don’t repeat mistakes.
Sa’ad Abubakar lll, the sultan of Sokoto, has asked the upper chamber of the national assembly to reject the bill seeking equality for male and female children in the sharing of inherited family wealth or property.
The bill also proposes that a widow should be entitled to the custody of her children unless it is contrary to the interests and welfare of the children.
It also says a widow should have the right to remarry any man of her choice and should have the right to a fair share in the inheritance of her late husband’s property, and the right to live in her matrimonial home.
But speaking at the closing ceremony of the 20th Zamfara State Annual Qur’anic Recitation Competition, Abubakar said the bill was against Islamic religion and, therefore, unacceptable to Muslims.
“Our religion is our total way of life; therefore, we will not accept any move to change what Allah permitted us to do,” he said.
“Islam is a peaceful religion; we have been living peacefully with Christians and followers of other religions in this country. Therefore, we should be allowed to perform our religion effectively.”
The monarch appealed to the red chamber not to consider the bill because of its religious implications.
He also hailed the federal government and Nigerian army for the capture of Sambisa forest from Boko Haram insurgents, describing it as historic.
“We are happy to hear this good news; we are, therefore, calling on the Nigerian army not to relent in its efforts in fighting the activities of Boko Haram,” he said.
He called on Muslims to continue to pray for peaceful coexistence in the country, advising them to cooperate with all the tiers of government to move the country forward.
Triple MG boss Ubi Franklin and Nollywood actress Lilian Esoro got married in November 2015 but in the past months, their marriage has been rocky for all to see.
It started with rumours they were having problems and then Lilian un-followed him on Instagram and did not post about their wedding anniversary and this only fueled rumours. Now, she has taken an even more drastic measure and taken down his name from her Instagram account.
Ubi himself might have just confirmed the divorce after the Triple MG CEO shared a photo of his wrist showing off a timepiece given to him by Alibaba and we noticed he has stopped wearing his wedding ring.
Or perhaps, he intentionally shared the photo to let us all know he’s done with his wedding?

The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi, has urged monarchs in Yoruba land to throw away the various idols in their palaces, saying God hates idolatry.
Speaking to Punch in a telephone interview with their correspondent in Osogbo, on Tuesday, Oba Akanbi said he believed that the palaces of monarchs must be without idols, warning traditional rulers to shun idolatry, saying God would not help any town whose monarch worshipped other gods.
The Iwo monarch explained that people should be able to come to palaces and pray to God, saying this would not be until the monarchs rid their palaces of strange gods, which he said could not help them.
The Oluwo stated,
“Our palaces must be clean and devoid of any idol. There is authority in the mouth of any monarch who is clean and who shuns idol worshiping. Our palaces must be devoid of idols.
“I removed the ‘Ogun Odela’ in front of my palace and asked them to take it to Ogundigba (far from the palace) because of this. This happened about two weeks ago.
“Oba must not kneel down before anybody to pray. This is a message or a warning to all the kings and let me tell them that their palaces are the habitation of God on earth. God was dwelling with us before churches and mosques were built.”
Oba Akanbi said the era of monarchs sitting back in their palaces and expecting their subjects to bring tributes to them was long over.
According to him, service to the people is necessary for any monarch to be loved by his subject.
He said Oduduwa became the greatest king in Yoruba land because of his love and service to the people, stressing that there had not been any leader like Oduduwa because kings had not been serving their people the way Oduduwa did.
Prominent Nigerian gospel singer, Frank Edwards has admonished secular singers who don’t realize that their music could be used to address a nation positively, but unfortunately 90% of it says “shake ur bum bum”.
A woman has reportedly been beheaded by a group of armed men in Afghanistan after she entered a city without her husband.
The horrific act took place in the remote village of Latti in Sar-e-Pul province, which is under Taliban control.
Under Taliban rule, women are prohibited from leaving their homes unless accompanied by a close male relative. They are also banned from working or education and are forced to wear the burqa.
Provincial Governor spokesman Zabiullah Amani told the Nation that the 30-year-old woman was targeted because she went out alone without her husband, who is in Iran. She had gone to the market to shop.
The Taliban have rejected any involvement in this latest incident.
Earlier this month five female Afghan guards working in the airport in southern Kandahar were killed by unknown gunmen as they were on their way to work, the latest in a string of attacks against women in Afghanistan.
From bomb attacks to targeted or honour killings or domestic abuses, Afghan women have borne the brunt of the 15 years of conflicts during the Taliban-led insurgency as security has deteriorated and violence has increased in most parts of the country.
Despite years of pressure by women’s groups and foreign donors, Afghanistan remains one of the most difficult places to be a woman.

Radio and TV Personality, Adenike Oyetunde has penned down an open letter to Olamide over his much talked about Olamide Live In Concert Show – OLIC.
She wrote a bittersweet note to the singer, stating her woes over highly rated concert, people struggled to get tickets for:
“Dear Olamide, what HAPPENED? What!!!
I attended #Olic2 and without a doubt, it was by far my BEST event last year. I talked, and talked about it; everyone around me that didn’t go, knew they had to this year.
Imagine my excitement when I saw these pictures by TyBello, I knew #Olic3 was definitely going to be a hit. I needed to see ‘Olamide Live In Concert’ *coughs. In my life, not even at either Canaanland or Redemption Camp had I EVER been stuck in such traffic.
No clear plans on controlling humans (forget that we are peculiar here). The plan was go with Uber. There was a change, and a friend’s friend took @mayowaekpo and I. What should have taken maybe 30minutes max, turned to two years in traffic.
Nobody deemed it fit to tell us that no cars were going into Eko hotel; we were all just hoping; stuck in traffic. Having to walk so far, isn’t always my first option; for obvious reasons.
Then I got into the hall, Olamide, why?
I came in just as you were done with your first outing and I figured, he’ll be back. You came back ONCE, while I was there and you played CD. Olamide, CD??? I’m still too lost.
CD… Like, ALL that for ‘DJ, track 2’.
Wait first, collect your money from the sound people; BAD, BAD sound. Even Adekunle (God bless his heart) who did LIVE for us, they sha spoilt his sound.
I, Adenike Oyetunde came to see You Olamide, LIVE, (it was a complimentary ticket, FYI), and you hounded me with Comedy. HOW??? How does that even work?
Alibaba’s January 1st Concert is coming, I’ll get comedy there, WHY, did you succumb, Why? I thought you had it all figured out; but, awon aye sold this BAD idea to you.
By the way, were you at Asa’s show? If not, PLEASE, Watch the CD. That’s what LIVE IN CONCERT is on about. I was TOO disappointed and I can’t hide it.
Excellency is KEY. You had ONE year to plan. I honestly didn’t see ANY plan oh; at least, to me. Of course, I still danced, I screamed, I took videos; but, from last year; it could have been WAY better.
I will not comment on that uncle that was jumping arand with you!!! Give us what we ‘paid’ for Nigerian Artiste, PLEASE. People hustled to GET tickets.”
A 400 Level student of Osun State University, Osogbo, Adebisi Rofiat Damilola who was missing 5 days ago has been found dead.

According to Daily Trust, Rofiat who was studying Science Education at the Ipetu-Ijesa campus of UNIOSUN left Ipetu on Thursday to attend a programme of NASFAT society at Ikoyi near Ikire and that her whereabouts was unknown since then.
A source who spoke on a condition of anonymity said
“Rofiat left Ipetu-Ijesha on Thursday. She was supposed to be in a NASFAT programme at Ikoyi, not far from Ikire. We have been looking for her since Thursday. We just received a phone call that Rofiat’s body was found somewhere around Iragbiji”.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Fimihan Adeoye confirmed the incident and assured that the perpetrators would be apprehended and brought to book.
He said the remains of the deceased student have been deposited in the mortuary for autopsy and that her family has been notified.
The father of the deceased student died recently and her family was still mourning when Rofiat was also sent to her early grave by unknown killers.
Mourners have been thronging the residence of the deceased at Ilesa Garage in Osogbo to console Rofiat’s mother.
Meanwhile, the two final year students of the same university, Samuel Eke and Akinduro Robert who were declared missing since September 5 have not been found. The CP said the matter is still under investigation.
Police arrested and arraigned a student of the university, Adedamola Olagoke, before a Magistrate Court sitting in Osogbo for kidnapping saying he was the person that communicated last with the missing students before their disappearance.
A 12-year-old boy has been jailed for six months after robbing two shops and mugging a man at knifepoint in a five-month reign of terror.
Mirror UK reports that the young boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, terrorised his victims from June to November this year. But as he was being handed a six-month detention order, he wept in court alongside his mum as he was led to cells.
The young boy mugged a man for his mobile phone after pulling out a three-inch flick knife on him in Dagenham, Essex, on June 24.
The victim asked the muggers to give him his phone back as the boy waved the blade at him, shouting “or what?” before making off with his Oyster card when the man snatched his phone back, Barkingside magistrates’ court heard.
The out-of-control kid criminal went on to steal sweets from A1 Cash and Carry in Dagenham on October 23 as part of a gang of three.
He returned to the same street on November 11 to rob Londis, where he leapt over the shop counter to snatch cigarettes and alcohol. The nightmare schoolboy was thrown out by shopkeeper Jedanatha Jeyaseelan.
He was captured on CCTV punching him repeatedly in the head as another boy hit him over the head with a bottle. Another street yob threw a shop sign at stunned Mr Jeyaseelan, who suffered an injured head, as he lay helpless on the floor.
The boy was told by magistrate Myrna Gilbert that he had to be put behind bars. Saint Duprie, defending, said the lad was led astray by older kids.
Ms Duprie said the lack of a father figure in his single-parent home and a criminal big brother had helped to compromise his “previous good character“.
She told the court:
“He’s a young man, he’s a vulnerable young man and it’s unfortunate that he’s become involved with peers that are much older than himself. “None of them [the offences] were pre-planned, they all took place on the spur of the moment. “He literally went along with what was taking place.”
Ms Duprie said his mum was “doing her best” to raise her children. She insisted that the boy, who’s now 13, is “remorseful“.
“When he was arrested and interviewed for these offences he fully co-operated with the police,” said Ms Duprie.
“He accepts that these are serious matters.”
The thug admitted three counts of robbery and one of possessing an offensive weapon in a public place. He muttered “I’m not going to do it again” before receiving a six-month detention order for each count, to run concurrently.
Ten weeks after being released by the Boko Haram insurgents, the 21 freed Chibok schoolgirls and a baby returned home this month to celebrate the Yuletide with their families for the first time since they were abducted by the terror group.
They are seen here looking all pretty as they take a selfie with CNN correspondent, Isha Sesay. How lovely!
A couple who wanted children of their own but couldn’t because of cysts in the wife’s ovary, have been arrested for luring a pregnant woman and attempting to cut her baby from her womb, killing both mother and child in the process.
Thaina da Silva Pinto and her husband Fabio Luiz Lima lured 22-year-old Rayanni Christini Costa to their home under the pretence of donating baby items to her.
Thaina who is 21 years old has been married to Fabio for three years, but upon discovering she could not have children she pretended to friends and family that she was pregnant and even went as far as posting photos of her swollen tummy on social media.
She then joined a Whatsapp group for people wanting to donate baby items where she then got access to pregnant women in need.
It is believed that she had contacted other poor pregnant women under the guise of offering them charity, but upon discovering they planned to show up with friends she cancelled the meeting.
Sadly, the victim turned up alone to collect the non-existent items after dropping her daughter off at the crèche, only to meet her end.
CCTV footage showed Rayanni meeting her abductor, Thaina, at the Central do Brasil train station in Rio before Thaina convinced her to follow her back home where her husband was waiting.
The police have disclosed that a knife was found in a room in the couple’s home and there were pools of blood in more than one room. The charred remains of what is believed to be Rayanni’s body and her baby’s was also found in the home of the couple in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
