Ace Nigerian comedian, Bright Okpocha, popularly known as Basketmouth, has replied to a follower who accused him of neglecting his civic duties.
It all started when Basketmouth, who is currently in Europe ahead of his tour and will remain there until after the general elections in Nigeria, took to his Instagram page to share photos of himself and his colleague Buchi.
“The Man in Manchester. #BasketmouthUnprovokedTour”, he captioned the post.
Reacting to the post, a follower pointed out that both of their votes would be lost because of their decision to leave the country at this time.
“We have lost two votes like this”, the follower wrote.
Basketmouth simply responded to the attack by asking the follower to focus on the real issue that Nigeria is facing while highlighting the estimated number of Nigerians who have relocated abroad in search of greener pastures.
“Have you counted the Nigerians that Japa’d. They’re in millions. So, my brother focus on the real problem. I came here for work.” He wrote.
See their exchange below,
This comes after Basketmouth was dragged to filth on social media for fixing his UK tour on election day, February 25.
Basketmouth posted the schedule of his upcoming UK tour on his social media page recently, and the date for his appearance in Hamburg clashes with the presidential election.
This didn’t sit well with a lot of people who didn’t hesitate to lambaste him for fixing his show on a day that would decide the future of Nigeria.
A Twitter user also dug out his old tweet where he criticized his colleagues who were outside the country during the 2015 presidential election, and called out his hypocrisy.
Basketmouth, who was unfazed by the backlash, explained that he has been hosting his UK tour in February for years, and it’s only logical for him to host 2023’s tour in February as well.
He added that the electoral body, INEC, should have consulted him first before fixing the election in February because he picked the month first.
In his response that seemed like satire, Basketmouth wrote,
“I’ve been hosting my UK tour every February for the past 12yrs. Interestingly, there have been times when the elections coincided with my shows.
Unfortunately, INEC has never deemed it fit to check with me before fixing the date for the elections. Since I picked February to host my tour first, I think it’s only fair for me to go ahead with the dates. Thank you. Please don’t forget to buy tickets “

US-based Nigerian rapper, Speed Darlington, has revealed why some male celebrities would rather have a babymama than marry.
Speaking in a recent interview, Speed stated that there is a high chance of celebrities losing their fame and relevance after getting married and having kids.
He attributed their failed careers to the amount of time, energy, and effort they put in to maintain their home and raise good children.
According to Speed, after settling down, those celebrities tend to slack off and lose focus which makes their careers naturally fade off.
He added that if we carefully examine the lives of married Nigerian celebrities, we will discover that their decline started after they got married.
He stated that some people urged him to switch from being a singer to doing comedy because his music career will never take off.

A 51-year-old man, Frederick Olorunfemi, has tragically passed away while he was fighting with his daughter’s school bus driver, whom she accused of molesting her.
According to Vanguard, the 7-year-old pupil of Luyol Schools, who will turn 8 in May, had reported the molestation incident to her mother.
She said after the driver dropped the other students at their destinations on February 1st, he drove her to his house to have canal knowledge of her.

The driver allegedly pushed Mr Femi, who fell down and was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead.
Speaking to Vanguard, the deceased’s wife, Mrs Mabel Olorunfemi, said,
“Last Wednesday, my daughter came back from school and told me that after her school bus driver had dropped everyone at their houses, he took her to his house, told her to lift her school uniform and sit on his lap to kiss him, and was calling her his wife.
Since my husband does not always come home, I waited till his return before informing him all that she had told me.
When he heard, with anger, he picked up his phone and contacted the school director and explained to him that he would proceed to the police station to report everything, but he was calmed by the proprietor of the school and summoned him to school the next day, which was on the 7th, Tuesday.
Myself and my daughter followed him there. At the proprietor office, the bus driver who goes by the name of Jacob was also present. Having asked Sarah to narrate all that happened, the proprietor asked the driver why he brought back the school bus late on that fateful day to which he responded that he had to drop something after dropping the kids.
Out of anger, my husband slapped him, then he hit my husband on the neck and a fight started right there in the office. As everyone was trying to separate them, my husband was seriously angry holding the driver and this led to a push by the driver. My husband fell down and went unconscious. Before we could get to the hospital he passed on.”
The Lagos State Police spokesman, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed the incident, said the bus driver is yet to be arrested as he is on the run.

Controversial Nollywood actress, Esther Nwachukwu, has revealed why she prefers dating married men over single men.
Esther, who disclosed that she is currently not dating a married man but would gladly date one if presented with the opportunity, explained in a recent interview that married men take better care of their women than single men.
“I am not dating a married man but if I see one, I will date him. They (married men) are less stressed and they take care of women better than single guys. If a married man has a girlfriend, he would take care of the girl. But, single guys have divided attention; they are always jumping from one woman to the other.”
On if she is not scared of being disgraced or attacked for dating a married men, Esther described the tactics she uses to avoid getting caught by her lover’s wife.
“One just has to respect the boundaries, and don’t interfere in his marriage. As a ‘side chic’, one should not call him when he is at home. As long as he is taking care of one, one does not need to blackmail him with his family. It is when one disrespects the family that it becomes dangerous.
“Whether I date a married man or not, a side chic will date my husband. It is normal. It is the nature of men to cheat. The important thing is for him to respect me.”
The actress further disclosed that she intentionally stirs controversy on social media because she wants to gain popularity.
Her words,
“I am not a prostitute. I just decided to become controversial because I wanted to trend. I have been to so many auditions, but in the end, if one does not have money to produce one’s own movie or pay directors to give one a lead role, one would keep being a ‘handbag’ (being relegated). That is now what I want. I have auditioned for Big Brother Nigeria more than six times. I even got to the final stage but they did not pick me.
“I have also been in Nollywood with nothing to show for it. It is either the director wants to sleep with one in exchange for a role, or one had to pay money, which I considered to be nonsense. That was why I decided to become controversial.”

Narrating her ordeal in an interview with Ghanaian actress Emelia Brobbey on her Okukuseku Show, Nyarko, who juggles three jobs in the UK, revealed she took out a loan to bring her partner and his mother to the UK.
She said their relationship began to go south after they welcomed their second child, only for her to later discover he was having an affair with another woman back in Ghana.
“I had a boyfriend during my teens in Ghana, and we reconnected after several years when I arrived in London. I went to Ghana for our marriage, and I brought him to London. We had two children together. His behaviour started showing after our second child. He was the quiet person, and I was the bubbly person in the marriage. To cut a long story short, I discovered he was having an affair with someone based in Ghana”. She narrated.
She claimed that her husband told her he was going to Ghana for business only to discover that he was there to visit his second family.
“He told me he was travelling to Ghana for business, but rather, he went to cohabit with his lover for five weeks, who gave him two children. Someone called to inform me. As I am speaking to you, he has brought his two children and his baby mama to London. They are living together in a different part of the UK,?” she said.
Nyarko further revealed that her ex-husband’s mother, whom she worked hard to bring to the UK, also supported her son’s decision.
“Not only the man during the marriage, but his mother also visited us three times. She didn’t even have a passport and had never seen one before. I took a loan to be able to bring him and his mother to London. I had to work hard to repay the loan, but in the end, he didn’t officially go to my family to divorce me.” she added.

Popular Nollywood actress, Mercy Johnson, has reacted to the tragic death of a 12-year-old student of Chrisland International School, Opebi, Lagos, Whitney Adeniran.
The 12-year-old died last Thursday during the school’s inter-house sports event at Agege Stadium.
The deceased, according to the school, slumped in “public view” and was rushed to the nearest medical facility for first aid.
However, her bereaved parents accused the school management of an alleged cover-up.
Whitney’s mother, Mrs. Blessing Adeniran, who cried out online, demanding answers to what happened to her daughter in a heartbreaking video, questioned how a healthy teenager with no medical condition could have suffered a cardiac arrest, as the school alleged.
“How does a 12-year-old have a cardiac arrest? No pre-existing heart condition, no pre-existing medical condition. She was hale and hearty, she was not sick in any form. Even if she will die from cardiac arrest why should one arrest kill a healthy teenager? Let me state this, that by the time I got there, my daughter’s lips and tongue had already turned black.” The mother said in part.
Reacting, actress Mercy Johnson, whose children also attend Chrisland School, revealed that she has spoken to the management to heed the cry of Whitney’s mother and release the details of what happened to her daughter.

The husband, who was also in the video with the woman, attested that his wife was indeed not his type and highlighted more of the things that made him marry her.
“I was not my husband’s spec, when my husband wanted to marry me…I knew the things he was saying in his heart, he was saying, hummm, let me just manage her, she’s hardworking, she’s a child of God, she can pray, she doesn’t bill me… I know the kind of girls my husband likes”, she said in part.

He abandoned them. No calls, no letters, no communication. They had no idea where he was. When she called his family, they didn’t tell her where he was but said he’s alive. He just up and left. Just like that. When I think of how she suffered to raise these kids, I get so mad”

A Nigerian mum, identified as Mrs. Blessing Adeniran has gone online to demand answers from the management of Chrisland High School in Lagos state after her 12-year-old daughter, Desola Whitney Adeniran, slumped and died while attending the school’s Interhouse sports held at the Agege Stadium last Thursday, February 9.
In a video uploaded on social media, the heartbroken mother stated that she was at the event to watch her daughter compete.
She explained that she felt concerned when she did not see her daughter during the previous match as well as other athletic activities.
According to her, she went to the location where the pupils were all confined to check on her child but a male student informed her that a particular Whitney had fainted and had been transported to the hospital.
Mrs. Adeniran said one of the staff saw her and told her that Whitney had been rushed to the hospital and on getting there, she met her daughter’s corpse.
She said up till now, the school has not given full details, about what happened to her child.
The devastated mother said that the school claimed her 12-year-old had a cardiac arrest and collapsed but her daughter was not unwell and had no pre-existing heart issue, and she is perplexed as to why she would have a cardiac arrest.
She demanded the school comes clean to her with regards to what really happened to her child so she can bury her in peace.

Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has revealed that the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) naira redesign strategy has greatly reduced the prevalence of kidnappings in the country.
In a new interview with Radio Nigeria Kaduna, Malami stated that the strategy’s beneficial aspects were overlooked.
Recall that on February 10, a seven-member Supreme Court panel led by John Okoro barred the CBN from prohibiting the usage of old naira notes (N200, N500, and N1,000).
The judgment came in response to an ex parte application filed by three states: Kaduna, Kogi, and Zamfara.
Reacting to the ruling, Malami said;
“I told you the case is still in court, we will obey the court order but we also have right to explain to court the positive sides of the policy. If you see the negative side of it, you have to see the positive sides. If these governors told the court the hardships been experienced as a result of the policy, there are also some problems that the policy is solving.
I gave you example of insecurity. Immediately this policy was introduced, the rampant kidnapping has drastically reduced. It also reduced rate of corruption, therefore we have right to go and explain to court these positive sides. The court gave order without listening to government side but it fixed 15 February to hear from the government.
Everybody knows part of the reasons Nigerians elected President Muhammadu Buhari is to fight corruption, insecurity and boost economy. The policy was introduced considering these and we will ask court to look at both sides of it.”
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has rejected claims that its Governor, Godwin Emefiele, stated that the present difficulty in distributing the newly redesigned naira banknotes is due to a scarcity of printing materials at the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company Plc.
According to several media reports, Emefiele mentioned this during his presentation to the National Council of State on Friday, February 10, 2023.
The apex bank stated that, contrary to circulating information, Emefiele told the Council meeting that the NSPMC was working on producing all denominations of the Naira to suit Nigerians’ transaction demands.
A statement released by Osita Nwanisobi, Director, Corporate Communications of the CBN, reads in part;
“While the CBN appreciates the concerns shown by all stakeholders about the distribution of the Naira, we are alarmed at the extent to which vested interests are attempting to manipulate facts and pitch the public against the Bank. For the avoidance of doubt, the CBN remains committed to performing its monetary policy functions, as stipulated in the CBN Act, 2007, as amended. We also wish to restate that the NSPMC has the capacity and enough materials to produce the required indent of the Naira. The Bank, therefore, wishes to appeal to the public to disregard the said report and exercise more restraint, even as we work assiduously to increase the circulation of the new notes in the country.”
The central bank also responded to a false voice note that was spreading on social media, claiming that the CBN was about to close down several banks in a specific geographical zone of the country.
“We wish to state unequivocally that there is no such plan and that the claims are illogical and do not comply with the workings of the Nigerian banking system. The public is therefore advised to ignore such recordings as they do not represent the policy thrust of the CBN and are only the desperate attempts of persons bent on inciting the public against the bank,” the statement reads.
