The 64-year-old man, Joseph Ojo, who set his five stepchildren ablaze a couple of days ago, has said he carried out the action because the victims joined their mother to allegedly beat him during a misunderstanding.
According to Ojo, he set the children ablaze at his residence in Fagun crescent area of Ondo town, headquarters of Ondo West Local Government Area of Ondo State last Saturday November 5.
One of the children was burnt to death in the inferno while two others passed away at the hospital.
Speaking during his parade at the State Police headquarters in Akure on Wednesday, November 9, the suspect stated that his wife instigated her five children against him after giving her N600 to prepare food for him and the family.
Ojo alleged that his wife usually starved him of food, even when he provided money for her to cook for him and the family.
He, however, said the woman failed to prepare food for him and this led to a misunderstanding between him and the wife while the children allegedly took turns attacking him.
Ojo said he was not happy with the development and had to look for fuel in his sawer machine, which he poured in the children’s room before setting them ablaze.
The suspect said he has been married to four women and has 10 children, adding that the mother of the victims was his fourth wife.
He said two of his wives left him after a minor misunderstanding while the other one died some years ago.
“I am 64 years old. I have married four wives. I did not strangulate my first wife. I have 10 children from different women,” he said.
“The one I married last if I give her money and she buys food, she does not give me food. She does not wash my clothes. She always fights me, despite giving me money.
“We have been together for two years. She and her children used to fight and beat me. They are always fighting. She will not fetch water for me. She fights the whole street. She always fights me alongside her children. They always beat me.
“We fought the day I set the children ablaze. We did not use to quarrel over sex. Everybody in the street knows the children used to beat me. We fought the night I set them ablaze.”
The Police spokesperson, Funmi Odunlami, said three of the children had died due to the injuries sustained from the burns while two others are on the danger list.
Odunlami said Ojo kept his 18-month twins in another room before setting the five step-children on fire and said their mother also sustained an injury while trying to rescue her children.
She said Ojo told police interrogators that he gave his wife N600 but he was not given any food the night he carried out the act, saying this act infuriated him to set the children on fire.
The PPRO said the suspect would soon be charged in court.

A Nigerian woman identified as Eketiette narrated how her friend’s neighbors saved a widow from her in-laws.
According to her, the woman had just lost her husband, and his family member came over to take over his properties without consideration for his widow and children.
The neighbors who heard about the exchange came up with a plan to rescue the woman and keep her documents.
Read the full story here:
“A lady who lives in my friend’s compound, lost her husband and his people showed up from the village two days later to collect everything from her.
As they began to harass her to bring the documents for the house, the car keys and cheque books, a neighbour overheard them.
He went and called three other men who were around in the compound and briefed them on what was happening. These men dressed up; one of them, a policeman who was off duty, put o his uniform. Together, they went to her door and knocked.
One of her brothers-in-law opened the door and told them to go away, that they were having a family meeting. The three men ignored him and barged into the house. They said they were from the bank, that the late man owed millions in debt and they were there to pack his things.
The wife was shocked. The man’s people were shocked. Their spokesman said, “Officer, sirs, let us hold a small meeting outside. We’ll be back.” They went outside to have a family tete-a-tete.
While they were outside, this woman’s neighbours told her their plan and assured her that they wouldn’t let anything bad happen to her. Ten minutes later, her brothers-in-law, husband’s uncle and cousin had still not returned. One of the men went to check on them.
Do you know these men had left? They fled and left their brother’s widow alone to face alleged bankers her late husband was supposedly owing. They hurried off to tell the whole community that everything the man had been displaying was on loan; that he was poor and owned nothing.
This worked in the woman’s favour, because they didn’t ask her to bring a dime for the funeral. After the man was buried, one of the neighbours who had showed up to protect her against her thieving in-laws, helped her collect her husband’s benefits and sell the house.
After the sale, she quietly relocated to Canada with her children. Her in-laws nearly choked to death. I chuckle every time I remember how they showed up again, to ascertain if the house had really been sold by the “bank” and that their brother didn’t own it.
A fellow on this app once said, “Our tradition dictates that a man inherit his late brother’s property. It is my right. His wife is not part of his family. The moment he dies, their contract is done.”
Interesting, this tradition that demands that you inherit your brother’s property, and not his debts. It doesn’t tell you to care for your brother’s orphans and widow. It gives you the right to only take and not give. Such a hollow tradition. Sounds like a tradition of thieves.”

In related news, Ossai Success Ovie, the Special Assistant on Media to the Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa, has said brides should stop kneeling down to feed their husband at their wedding.
The media aide, in a post shared on his Facebook page, said the practice which represents a woman’s submission to her husband should be scrapped because it’s fake.
According to him, after the wedding ceremony, women don’t replicate the act by kneeling down to serve their husband’s meal at home.
He pointed out that back in the days, women used to kneel down to serve their husband his meal but that is not the case anymore, so the practice should be ruled out from weddings.
Read as he wrote,
“Ladies should stop kneeling and feeding their husbands during wedding reception.
This act personally to me is called fake feeding .
Ladies only do this during wedding reception after that moment , they won’t be kneeling down and feeding their husbands so why doing it when they won’t continue acting it.
Back then, when women served their husband food , they go on their knees But today the story is different because we are advancing.
So they should stop doing that kneeling thing during wedding reception.
Personally I won’t want my wife to be keeling while serving my food.”

A Nigerian woman living abroad has stated that at some point in the life of a Nigerian living in the diaspora, they realize that their relatives cherish their money more than their presence.
She made this assertion while sharing her experience with her relatives back in Nigeria.
She recounted a time when she traveled back to her own country from the US, and instead of being happy to see her, her family members, who couldn’t hide their disappointment, said they would have rather she send the money she spent on her journey to them rather than coming all the way.
She concluded that some relatives living in Nigeria are too greedy; all they care about is the money one sends home and not the person’s wellbeing.
Her words,
“I traveled from the US to Lagos, took a flight from Lagos to the east, then hired a taxi from the airport to my hometown, and the first question a relative greeted me with was, “this one you returned in the middle of the year, hope all is well? You should have just sent that flight money to us instead of wasting it on flight tickets. Anyway, you are welcome.
One day we will talk about family greed. The moment you travel abroad, you become a means to an end to some. They don’t care if you die, just keep sending money whenever they ask and all will be well. At some point in your life while in the diaspora, you’ll understand that the money you send home is more valuable than your presence. When you figure that part, you will also start hiding your financial success and purchases.”

@chideraujah wrote, “Its not possible at all, cheating on someone you love will hurt the person, and you wouldn’t want to do anything that would hurt the one you love. So, its not possible to love and cheat on the one you love.”
@danmewo96 wrote, “Yes. Human emotions are not wired to run on ideal parallel lines. Love as a feeling is an affection that could cut across different rules. You can love different ppl for diff reasons.
Cheating is an act of indiscipline and not a result of absence of love.”
@omoluabi1sq wrote, “Very possible. Most especially for men. Men can cheat on their woman and still love the woman. When a woman cheats, you have lost her.”
