Senator Florence Ita-Giwa has no patience for the tedious judicial processes involved before ruling on cases especially rape cases.

“The best way to end rape is by cutting off the genitals of rapists,” the former senator reportedly said at an event yesterday.

“If I were a judge and a man is brought to court for raping a child, he will receive capital punishment. But I will say, ‘don’t kill him, rather let him live his life in pain, let his organ be cut off’”, she said.

This comes at a time when there are, on weekly basis, reports of rape cases piling in court, awaiting hearing. For Ita-Giwa, sparing rapists means unleashing terror on girls and women. The perpetrators do not deserve that anatomy anymore, she said, adding that rapists are lucky she left the Nigerian Senate.

“[A rapist] should not be allowed the pleasure of using that organ anymore,” the 70-year-old politician continued, adding, “If the organ is not cut off, at the end of his term in prison, he will use it on other children.

“Fortunately for them, I’m no longer in the Senate but I will find a way to get it into the chamber. This is the proper way to end the evil of rape in the society,” she concluded.

A mysterious lightning has killed two women in Imo State during a prayer session in a church leaving others seriously injured.

Tragedy struck in Imo State as 25-year-old Chioma Jonathan, a native of Obiangwu in Ngor Okpala Local Government Area and Chinonye Anyanwu, aged 26, from Ahiazu Mbaise LGA, both in Imo State, died when they were struck by lightning.

According to Daily Sun, the unfortunate incident happened when the two women went to participate in the regular Holy Ghost Hour prayer session of Heavenly Sure Charismatic Church, a Pentecostal church, usually held in the premises of Comprehensive Secondary School, Emekuku in Owerri North LGA, Imo State.

It was also gathered that the 54-year-old General Overseer of the church, Pastor Luke Nwokocha, who led the short-lived prayer session was slightly affected as he temporarily lost consciousness and was rushed to a hospital by his wife and another member of the church, where he was revived. In addition, he sus­tained injuries on his leg.

Recounting the story, Pastor “We always have fellowship every Tuesday. On the fateful day, we had our ‘Holy Ghost Hour’. We were five members in the church. The two deceased sisters, including the sister that swept the church premises; Evangelist Solomon and myself were arranging the benches. Around 4.30pm heavy rain started falling. I started praying for the programme.”

“Then there was a sudden lightning flash followed by the deafening sound of thunder. The two women, who were in the direct path of the electric field created by the lightning flash died instantly, when they were struck by the streak. Nwokocha, who apparently was off the direct path of the streak received a much lower jolt of electricity, which, however, was strong enough to throw him across the room, cause temporary loss of consciousness and physical injuries on his leg and hands.

“My wife, Pastor Eucharia Nwokocha and the other church member rushed me to the hospital for medical treatment,” he said.

“I have been in this ministry for 26 years. I have never experienced anything like this. I was called into ministry in 1990. Until that time, I was a policeman and served in the Imo State Police Command and retired at Akwa Ibom Police Com­mand in July 2007. Following my retirement, I decided to focus on my ministry fulltime. I do not under­stand how it happened, its only God who understands and knows all.”

Following the incident, the elder brother of Chioma Jonathan reported the case to the Owerri North Divisional Police Station, from where the case was transferred to the homicide department at the headquarters of the Imo State Police Command, Owerri, the state capital.

The Commissioner of Police, Taiwo Lakanu who confirmed the incident said it was a strange occurrence. He added that the cleric was undergoing interrogation at the State Criminal Investigation Department while the corpses of the dead women had been deposited at the mortuary of the Holy Rosary Hospital, Emekuku.

One of the elders of Emekuku community, Godwin John revealed that the whole thing was a mystery.

“We know Pastor Luke usually holds the ‘Holy Ghost Hour’ prayer session. What happened to Pastor Luke Nwokocha and the lightning strike that killed two members of his church is an abomination. We will consult the elders,” he said.

Meanwhile Lakanu has reassured relations of the deceased women that proper investigation would be carried out by the officer in charge of the homicide section of State Criminal Investigation Department, Supol Innocent Obi, who is working hard with the detectives under him to ensure that there is no miscar­riage of justice.

The Nigerian Army is winning the war against Boko Haram as it has made a major breakthrough by discovering a massive underground storage facility belonging to the terrorists.

The Nigerian Army has made a stunning discovery as it uncovered storage facility been used by the terrorist group to store food. This was made public by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Sani Usman, he said the storage contained large quantity of foodstuff when it was discovered.

The statement read:

“On Saturday 16th April 2016, troops of 7 Division Strike Group Team B and 22 Task Force Brigade conducted a simultaneous dawn raid on suspected Boko Haram terrorists hideouts at Biggoro, Warpaya and Aura, North of Kumshe in Bama Local Government Area.

“The essence of the operation was stop the reported criminal activities of remnants of Boko Haram terrorists hiding in the three villages. This became necessary as previous efforts were futile. The suspected terrorists kept coming in search for food, water and shelter.

“The surprised dawn attack yielded positive result as the troops discovered well concealed observation posts on trees in the villages constructed by the terrorists to give them early warning of troops movement or approach.

“In addition the troops found out that the observation posts though tree tops, were constructed in such a manner with chairs and ropes to pull up foods and other needs by the sentry without necessarily coming down the trees.

“To also save for the rainy day, the terrorists had underground food storage facilities where they stocked large quantity of foodstuffs. The troops killed two Boko Haram terrorists and also recovered three AK-47 rifles, magazines and ammunitions. They also recovered two motorcycles from them. In addition they rescued two children from the terrorists.”

A teenager identified as Zara who was abducted by Boko Haram but was later rescued by the Nigerian Army has expressed her willingness to join the terror group because of the stigma she is now experiencing after she was reunited with her family.

This is just as Ahmad Salkida, a journalist known to have unfettered access to Boko Haram, said that the government’s decision to close down the Chibok school was a sign of victory for the terror group since their plan was to discourage western education.

However, the story of Zara (not real name), who is a 17-year-old girl, is one among the myriad of young girls, whose lives have been “cut short” by the invasion of the sect in various communities in the North-East.

Recounting her ordeal in an interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Zara said she was kidnapped by the Boko Haram and then freed by the army, a development that had made her sometimes wishing she were back in the forest (Sambisa) rather than suffering the stigma as a Boko Haram “bride”.

Though unconfirmed if she was one of the missing Chibok schoolgirls, Zara said until now she didn’t have her own social media hashtag, but like thousands of others – free or still captive – she is deeply traumatised.

In telling #ZarasStory, being the first time she was speaking to outsiders about her “terrible experience” a year on, and the pain she still suffers to this day, Zara said: “They gave us a choice – to be married, or to be a slave. I decided to marry.

One of the militants had once told her: “You are only coming to school for prostitution. Boko (Western education) is Haram (forbidden) so what are you doing in school?” But as she continued in her narration, there was so much confusion in her face and in her answers even though she claimed not being a killer, but just a child. Continuing, Zara said: “The feeling for the forest is strong now, but it will go away.

I will forget the time with Boko Haram, but not yet.” She said she was in love with her husband although she believes she had been brainwashed, a development which made her feel abandoned by her faminily and stigmatised by her community.

While she lamented the precarious state in which she had found herself, it became so obvious that there was little or no difference in her story, except for the fact that child she was soon to bear a child. Collaborating her story, her uncle, Mohamed Umaru, said: “Life was tough and dangerous.

The air force jets bombarded the vast Sambisa Forest where the militants have their camps and from where soldiers rescued her and eventually returned her to her relatives. “The women in our family realised she was three months pregnant. In our family it happens that some of us are Christians and some are Muslims.

She was a Christian before she was kidnapped but the Boko Haram who married her turned her into a Muslim.” On whether to give birth to the unborn baby or not, Umaru said there was a split in the family over what to do and they took a vote as to whether she should abort or keep the child. The majority prevailed and she gave birth to a boy.

“She said her husband’s father is called Usman, so that is how she named the child,” Mohamed said. Immediately “Usman” was born, according to him, the insults began. “People call me a Boko Haram wife and called me a criminal. They didn’t want me near.

They didn’t like me,” Zara said as a tear slowly slipped down her cheek. She now sits inside the small walled compound around her house, afraid to go outside because of the cruel insults of the neighbourhood children – messages of hate learned from their parents.

“They didn’t like my child. When he fell sick nobody would look after him,” she said. To justify this fact, Zara said last weekend, as she slept outside with “Usman” who was just nine months old because of the heat, a snake got into their compound and the boy was killed. She stated that half of the family celebrated what they called God’s will.

“Some were happy that he died. They were happy the blood of Boko Haram had gone from the family,” Zara said. “They said thank God that the kid is dead, that God has answered their prayers. Sometimes she says she wants to go to school and become a doctor and help society, but sometimes, when people insult her, she says she wants to go back to the Sambisa Forest.

“She always talks about her husband who happens to be a Boko Haram commander. She says the guy is nice to her and that he wants to start a new life with her,” Mohamed explained.

Listening to Zara’s story, told quietly with eyes flicking down at the ground, it is hard to imagine anyone going through what she has gone though, let alone a 17-year-old girl.

The incident allegedly occurred in the male toilets. An eye witness said : “These two have been an item for long now with the maths teacher, and she passes every test. Now we know how.’.

Another eye witness said: ‘Kodwa he is married, she is happy being side bae. Everyone knows he is promiscuous.”

Student teacher relationship is prohibited and if convicted, the teacher might lose his teaching post. The principal of the said school refused to comment saying this was an internal matter.

A 59-year-old physically challenged man, Mr Olaiya Adeagbo, has pleaded with an Igando Customary Court in Lagos to dissolve his 23-year-old marriage, accusing his wife of infidelity.

He told the court on Monday that that his wife with whom he had four children, was having an affair with his neighbour.

“I always received a tip-off from our neighbours that my wife is having an affair with one of our neighbours who was a bachelor.

“That fateful day, I came back home earlier and could not find her in our room, two of my neighbours told me that they sighted her when she sneaked into her lover’s room.

“I went to knock on his door but he refused to open after hearing my voice.

“I continued knocking and he later opened his door, and I saw my wife hiding behind his door sweating and panting, I greeted her and left.

“After some days, her lover died and my wife disappeared from the house without taking anything and refused to come back.

“My wife later went to marry another man, who also died after some months of their marriage,” he said.

The petitioner also told the court that his wife fights a lot with their neighbours.

“My wife fights a lot, she fought with our pregnant neighbour but the woman died the following morning.

“Every house we rented, we are always evicted because of her frequent fighting with me and neighbours; she once stabbed me with a knife” he said.

He urged the court to terminate the marriage as his life was not safe and that he was no longer interested in the union.

In her submission, the wife, Mrs Taiwo Adeagbo, 46, also accused her husband of committing adultery.

She told the court that man her husband saw her with was her benefactor not her lover.

“I am not having any affair with that our neighbour, he was only my benefactor who always meet my needs as my husband is not responsible, but unfortunately he is no more.” she said.

The mother of four, said her husband had at one point eloped with her best friend.

“My husband always bring home different women claiming they have one problem or another; he once ran away with my best friend to unknown destination for three-months,” she added.

She begged the court to grant her husband’s wish and terminate the marriage as she too was no longer interested in the union.

The President of the court, Mr Adegboyega Omilola, after listening to the couple, adjourned the case to May 10 for further hearing.

This picture of a University of Lagos student has been declared missing since Thursday after he went out a night of enjoyment and hasn’t returned.

A student of the University of Lagos identified as Oreoluwa Sokan has been declared missing by the police after family members hinted that he has not returned home since Thursday with his whereabouts unknown.

It was gathered that the student went missing after partying at a night club on Thursday. Anybody with useful information as to his whereabouts can contact the nearest police station.
