AMVCA 2016: The bleh and the boom’ -By Charles Novia

AMVCA 2016: The bleh and the boom’ -By Charles Novia

A motley crowd of influential Nollywood practitioners gathered in small groups, down at the Pool Bar at the Eko Hotels and Suites just a few minutes after the 2016 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards ended before 10 pm C.A.T. And as I mingled from one huddle to the other, what one could pick out was a linear shock at some of the twists the awards had thrown up earlier in the evening.

‘Ol’Boy, this award nor too pure this year’ said a top Nollywood Director to me pointedly as if he was a civil servant making a minority report. I shrugged, deciding to be silent just to hear opinions.

‘How on earth could a cooking show win in a category where there were drama series? What the hell was that? ‘asked another Nollywood Producer in anger to even the winner of that category who seemed undecided on what to say.

‘How can ‘small small’ kids in acting, the up and comers be winning the big prizes in acting every year at the AMVCAs consistently? Look am na! E nor pure! These guys just nominate the big names alongside the new ones and then disgrace the old and established actors by giving the awards to people we don’t even know!’ said another established Producer, shaking his head in disbelief.

‘But it is a viewers choice awards’ proferred one of the recognised Jurors in this year’s award. ‘The winners are chosen based on the number of votes they receive from the viewers. That’s how it works. If the old acts go to sleep and expect that their pedigree would win them the awards, then they have no one to blame but themselves when those who worked hard to get votes come out tops’

‘Like I said before, this award nor pure this year’ repeated the top Nollywood Director.
Whilst many established practitioners in Nollywood and other sectors present that night had their own reservations about the fairness of the awards in some categories, in other gatherings, those who won in their various categories were all smiles and busy getting hugs and handshakes as well wishers ( or those with daggers in their hearts too, who knows?) and friends celebrated with them.

There were beaming smiles and polite laughter all over the grounds and as is wont in awards, everyone, no matter their differences identifies with a winner.

Let’s rewind a bit to the beginning of the show so we can have an idea of how the sighs and songs came about.
It’s become an annual tradition for me to review the AMVCAs and this fourth edition held much promise for the clear and undisputable fact that in just four years, with a gradual sense of purpose and media might as well as huge injection of funds, the AMVCAs is now arguably the biggest movie awards event in the continent. And with that perception comes much expectations.

There was the pre-show red carpet event as usual which had many of the guests and celebrities dressed by interesting fashion designers. From my mental calculation at the event, it is likely that nothing less than thirty million naira worth of clothes and accessories must have been made as income for the fashion and make up industry just for this event.

Knowing that the scrutiny of the red carpet would be done by the nebulous fashion police we have locally, I always skip the red carpet as much as I can and head straight to the hall for the show every year.

With nominees, guests and celebrities seated in the hall, the show kicked off on the dot by 7.00pm Nigerian time with a performance by The Star Act Dance Company, a troupe which had dancers costumed in an impressive combination of white and gold sashes. The dancers put up a well choreographed piece which was quite good. I would say this was the best opening sequence so far in all the editions of the AMVCAs. Splendidly done.
IK Osakioduwa and Minnie Dlamini then came onstage as the hosts for the night. Minnie’s attempt to show that she has an understanding of Nigerians through the influence and impact of Nollywood movies got her some applause when she greeted with ‘Igbo Kwenu’.

The Presentation of the awards began with Chris Attoh presenting the Best Art Director award to Frank Rajah who seemed better prepared this year for his speech than his famous ‘Yvonne Nelson, I give you the glory’ stutter of the year before. Frank won it for ‘Refugees’.
After a couple of award presentation by Ireti Doyle and Gideon, then Ozzy Agu and and Stella Obinwa, there was a musical performance by a Tanzanian singer, Alikiba. He gave a good performance which many in the hall seemed to love as I saw pockets of dancing going on by some guests, possibly those from the Eastern part of Africa.

In introducing Osas and Gbenro Ajibade as the next set of presenters , Minnie called them ‘The Newly Weds’. I did wonder then if Minnie was reading a prepared script or just gushed out her own personal introduction because it’s been months since the couple got married. That wouldn’t qualify for being Newly Weds, if it comes to that.

And that brings me to something I noticed all through. I should think that in a bid to avoid wasting of time and off-scripted monologues, the AMVCAs this year jettisoned the script prompters or any form of scripted cues for the Awards Presenters. Almost all the Presenters came on and went straight to the job at hand. Not a bad idea.

In between the commercial breaks, one which the viewers at home would have been watching the Sponsors messages, a couple of stand up comedians were brought in to thrill the audience before the show went back to the post-commercial segments. Seeing that I always have commented that this should be done in my past reviews, one must commend the organisers for this. The stand up acts kept the audience all smiling and ready when the cameras came back to the show.

And talking about comedians, there were two onscreen stand up comedians for the night, one Thomas Gumede and the other Ugandan called Salvador. Gemede was boring to me and out of place with his jokes. The audience gave him some polite reactions but most times he seemed quite forward with his jokes and was just average.

But his Ugandan counterpart, Salvador? Now, that is a funny guy! Without sounding condescending, I actually thought he was going to be as tepid as Gemede when he was introduced but the dude is a natural! He was so on point and had the audience in stitches. He was one of the major highlights of the night.

When Director Stanlee Ohikuare came up onstage to pick up his award for Best Lighting Designer and was giving a speech, he was rudely cut off by the sound guys. I use the term ‘rudely cut off’ because it seemed to be in bad taste at that point, especially as none of the nominees were told by the Producers of the show to keep their acceptance speech short and within a time frame. I stand to be corrected if they were. It’s not so much that he was cut off that was my problem but the abrupt cease of sound on his microphone to the audience in the hall ( and perhaps to the viewers at home) which seemed impolite. What happened to the music cues?

Everything seemed to be going on relatively well from there and sitting near the irrepressible Chi Gurl, the comedienne who was having me in stitches with her funny interjections and off-beat lampoon of the goings-on onstage, was quite an experience.

Of course, when she went up onstage with John ‘Mr Ibu’ Okafor to present the Best Actor in a comedy Award, she and Okafor were very much in their elements with their banter.

Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz, won that award. Being that he has had a good couple of years so far with his near-nasalized mode of talking which has earned him fame and fans, his getting the award is not in dispute.

Sam Nzeribe won the award for ‘Best Supporting Actor’ and he gave a moving speech about how his career was enhanced by the Catholic Church which sponsored his study of the Creative Arts. The audience warmed up to that.

Yemi Alade came up and performed two songs. Her performance was complemented by back up dancers which gave it an aesthetic slant but I couldn’t help thinking that Yemi would need to work on a new hit very soon. It’s inevitable that she would.

There was a glaring omission in the Roll of Honor list which scrolled pictures and names of the artistic departed in the past year. One of the veterans in the television industry in Nigeria and basically among the first five pioneers of the film industry in the seventies as a Producer as well, Jab Adu, was poignantly missing in the list. That is unforgivable, if you ask me. The popular Bassey Okon of ‘Village Headmaster’way back and Mr Adio in ‘Adio’s Family’passed on a few days ago and the best the research team could have done was to add him to the roll call. He died a day or two after Mike Odiachi, who was in the list mercifully. May his soul rest in peace, as with the others.

The Trailblazer Award went to Kemi Lala Akindoju, a hardworking young lady who has so much to give, after giving so much too, to the industry. She won a car with the prize and gave a good speech which recognised all she was grateful to, including the Directors she has worked with, except one who took a chance too on her years ago, in my opinion. In any case, she deserves the award. No doubt.
The most moving part of the show was the Industry Merit Award presented to Veteran Actress and a sterling ‘Elder Stateswoman’ of the industry, Bukky Zainab Ajayi who was wheeled on to the stage to a standing ovation. She was obviously overwhelmed and gave a tear-jerking speech.

There were a many moved people in the hall that night and most eyes were moist when she wept and asked for forgiveness if she has offended anyone in the course of her career.

She was so real and natural, wondering if the whole hall was actually standing for her! It was such a beautiful aspect of the night and one which will be unforgettable for a long time.

The surprises of the night were in the Best Actor and Best Actress diadems. A shocked and teary Adesua Etomi won the Best Actress award, flooring the other heavyweights in that category. That set the hall in murmurs and behind the smiles and claps, there was wonder and incomprehensibility. Personally, I have no qualms with Adesua winning that award. I think she is one of the most focused actresses in her generation at present and gives unbelievable attention to her roles. And being a trained thespian, she has range and depth. So, she deserves the award.

The other surprise too was in Daniel K Daniel winning the Best Actor Award, also flooring other heavyweights in that category. I think Daniel is a good actor and that is where I will leave it because I am yet to watch the movie which earned him a nomination and a win. However, there were many in the audience who did not agree with the result. I will come to these aspects in a bit.
Flavour performed and gingered the audience with his two songs. And after that Akin Omotosho won the Best Director award for the movie ‘Tell me something’
The last award of the night was won by Stephanie Linus; the Best Overall movie for ‘Dry’, her movie on VVF.

Stephanie won an SUV too with the award and gave a good speech about the Girl Child and even chipped in the Ese Oruru angle in highlighting the problems bedevilling the Girl Child. I think ‘Dry’ is a good movie and Stephanie deserves the award. Any of the movies in that category deserved it though.
The show ended and as the guests moved out of the hall, the little post mortems by a few practitioners began in lobbies and open spaces before the after party.
Here is what I really think.
In areas of organisation, event planning and stage management for this year’s AMVCA, the organisers score an A minus, which is a marked improvement from other editions. However, there is a lot to be desired.

It is about time, in my honest opinion, that AMVCA transmutes from being a Viewers Choice Awards to a REAL juror or Academy driven awards which should enhance the credibility of the voting process. It is all well and good to give the power of choice to the audience which votes for the winners but public voting is populist and not popular in awards such as this. Come on! This is art we are talking about. Elevated art and artistry. A jury of excellent professionals and perhaps other past winners would suffice here to assess the future categories and pass their judgement without fear or favour. When such happens, even if some may not agree with most of the winners, there would be no groundswell of discontent when the areas of scoring are used. Viewers Choice categories can be retained in a couple of categories though but not the whole gamut of a growing prestigious event like the AMVCA.

It is possible that if the awards become a jury determined award, a rebranding of the name would be inevitable. It is better to start the process now when the award is growing on people than to let it ride for awhile.

There’s nothing strange or wrong in rebranding. Hip Hop Awards in Nigeria was rebranded to The Headies and a few other awards too. It is a process of garnering more credibility and sidestepping the collective ‘Bleh’ exclamations now usual in the awards but making sure that the ‘Boom’ of appreciation resonates.

A lot of work and planning obviously went into AMVCA 2016 and congratulations to to everyone. Everyone.
Because the film industry won in the end.

Court Remands Ex-CDS Alex Baddeh At Kuje Prison.

Alex Baddeh

A federal high court sitting in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, has ordered that former Chief of Defence Staff, Alex Badeh, be remanded at the Kuje Maximum Prison.

He is to remain in custody pending the determination of his bail application on March 10, 2016. In his ruling on Monday morning, Justice Okon Abang struck out the bail application filed by Mr. Badeh’s counsel, Samuel Zibiri, on the grounds that it was filed ahead of his client’s (Mr. Badeh’s) arraignment.

Mr. Badeh was arraigned for alleged fraud, relating to the diversion of N3.9 billion meant for the purchase of arms for the Nigerian Army.

Other allegations against Badeh include alleged spending of NAF funds to build a shopping mall worth N878,362,732.94; another N650 million for the purchase of a commercial plot of land and $2 million on a duplex in Abuja.

Mr. Badeh was to be arraigned before Justice Abang on Thursday, March 3, but the case was shifted to March 7 owing to the absence of the judge.

How The Abducted Ikorodu Schoolgirls Were Rescued. (Photo)

Kidnappers

The suspected kidnappers of three female students of Babington Macaulay Junior Seminary in Ikorodu, Lagos State, have been paraded.

The girls identified as — Timilehin Olosa, Tofunmi Popoola and Deborah Akinayo — were kidnapped by gunmen on Monday in their school premises.

One of the security agents involved in the rescue operation told Punch that it was discovered that the victims were initially taken to Adamo forest immediately after their abduction.

Adamo forest is across the river in Lugbusi community, where the school is situated in Ikorodu.

According to the source:

“We gathered that the kidnappers were 12 men, and they came in eight canoes. They used seven AK-47 rifles for the operation.

“One of the men, who we later identified as Lamiameni, brought the kidnapping job to the gang, while another member, known as Felix, alias Tradition, was the one communicating with the families for ransom negotiation.”

Another source said from the forest, the gang moved to a creek, located between Ikorodu and Epe, Lagos State, where they also held the girls.

Security agents were said to have had the first break on March 4, when a suspected kidnapper, Emmanuel Arigidi, aged 37, was sent by the gang from the creeks to buy foodstuffs.

He was said to have bought foodstuffs big enough for an army, which confirmed the suspicion that he was a member of the gang. He was subsequently arrested.

He said:

“Arigidi broke down during interrogation and confessed to being a member of the gang that stole the schoolgirls. He gave us the direction to the place they were keeping the girls, and mentioned the names of other members. He even promised to lead the operatives to the location.”

It was gathered that after waiting for Arigidi for two days, the gang sensed that something was amiss and thereafter moved to an area around Igbo Okuta Bridge, Imota, Ikorodu.

It was gathered that possible hiding places had been discussed among the gang members during the planning of the kidnapping.

When security operatives therefore noticed that there were no activities in the creek, they suspected that the gang had fled the area. But Arigidi had no problem in revealing the place they could be.

Also, the relatives of suspected abductors mentioned by Arigidi were said to have been rounded up and made to plead with their people on the telephone to release the girls.

It was learnt that the fathers of two of the suspected kidnappers were allowed on Saturday to go after their sons to talk to them and other gang members to release the girls.

“At about 5am on Sunday, over 500 operatives, comprising the IG team, the Lagos State Police Command and other security agencies stormed Imota and rescued the schoolgirls at the Igbo Okuta Bridge area of Ikorodu,”

a source said. Two other suspected kidnappers were arrested during the operation.

“How we kidnapped the 3 Lagos School Girls,” – Suspects

Babington-Macaulay-Junior-Seminary-School

The kidnappers of three abducted schoolgirls of Babington Macaulay Junior Seminary in Ikorodu, Lagos, have revealed how they carried out the operation.

One of the suspects, Mr. Arigidi, who spoke to newsmen, said “We went to Maya bridge to enter canoe and went to the school around 8 p.m.

“After we gained entrance into the school, we took away three girls and we took them to our hideout. But along the line, we had disagreement between ourselves and I was actually the one that started it. I told other members of the gang that what we have done is not good and that I don’t like it.

“I know that security in Lagos State is now tight and I was telling others that there was no way we would get away with this kind of job considering the level of security in the state.”

Adding that “Three days after I ran away, operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) then arrested me somewhere in Majidun and that was how I told them how we planned the attack.”

Agiri also said “One thing I will like to say is that if not for the fact that I was arrested, they would not have seen the girls because I was the one that revealed everything to the police.”

Details of the Car Crash That Killed James Ocholi, His Wife and His Son

NIGERIA 1 (1)

The Minister of State for Labour and Productivity, James Ocholi (SAN); his wife, Blessing; and son, Joshua, on Sunday died in a road crash along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway, 57 kilometres to their Kaduna destination.

It was learnt that the Sport Utility Vehicle in which the family travelled in, had a burst tyre on the highway, leading to the crash.

Ocholi and his third child were said to have died on the spot after the Lexus-Jeep had a burst tyre in the rear and somersaulted several times.

The impact was so bad that the minister’s SUV ran into other vehicles in his convoy.

His critically injured wife died at the Doka Government Hospital, Kaduna, around 4pm on Sunday.

The driver and aide de camp, who were also rushed to the clinic, were later brought to the National Hospital, Abuja at 7.45pm for treatment.

The Kaduna State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission, Mr. Francis Udoma, said the accident occurred about 57 kilometres away from Kaduna.

Udoma confirmed that the minister and the son died on the spot, adding that some aides to the late minister also sustained injuries.

The news of the minister’s death was first broken by his counterpart for Aviation, Hadi Sirika.

He said on his twitter handle, “It is too heavy for me to bear the loss of my dear friend, Minister of State, James Ocholi, SAN. We departed on Friday to meet no more.”

Tears flowed uncontrollably among friends, lawyers, chieftains of the APC and relatives as the corpses of Mr Ocholi, his wife Blessing and son Joshua were brought to the National Hospital, Abuja, by FRSC.

That of his wife was brought in about one hour, thirty minutes later.

Senior government officials, who were on the ground at the Hospital when the vehicles arrived, were seen in groups discussing the incident in hushed tones.

President Muhammadu Buhari expressed shock and sadness at the death of Ocholi, his wife and son.

In a statement on Sunday, Buhari described the death of the minister’s as untimely, regretting that Nigeria had lost a key component of the change agenda.

“Barrister Ocholi was an accomplished and patriotic Nigerian, who was keen to accept the call to service at a time his country needed him,” Buhari said.

He said in the few months he had been in office, the late minister of state had already begun to distinguish himself through his commitment and dedication to his portfolio.

The late Ocholi had a long record of political association with Buhari.

Buhari also condoled with the government and people of Kogi State, which he described as having lost a distinguished and irreplaceable son.

He prayed that God would comfort them and grant them the grace to bear the loss.

Buhari also sent the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. David Babachir, to formally convey the news to members of the deceased family as well as parishioners in his place of worship.

Speaking with journalists at the National Hospital premises, Babachir stated that the three family members were killed in the crash at about 3pm.

He said, “I will like to confirm that at about 3pm today (Sunday), the Minister of State for Labour, James Ocholi (SAN), was involved in a motor accident along the Kaduna-Abuja road. In this accident, the minister lost his life, his son also lost his life, and the wife also lost her life.

“It is a very sad day indeed for Nigeria as this has never happened and President Buhari is in shock; all members of the Federal Executive Council are in shock and indeed all Nigerians are in shock.

“Personally, I have known Ocholi for more than 20 years; we have been friends, both in politics and in Christian service. I am indeed personally saddened by this and cannot begin to express the grief that we all face.

“Now the bodies have been recovered and deposited in the mortuary and we are waiting for the immediate family and the government for the next line of action. May God comfort all of us Nigerians.”

image (4)

President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed shock and sadness at the death of Barrister James Ocholi (SAN), who together with his wife and son were killed in a car crash in Abuja on 6 March, 2016.

President Buhari described the Minister of State for Labour’s death as untimely, regretting that Nigeria has lost a key component of the CHANGE agenda.

“Barrister Ocholi was an accomplished and patriotic Nigerian, who was keen to accept the call to service at a time his country needed him,” President Buhari said, adding that in the few months he had been in office, the late minister of state had already begun to distinguish himself through his commitment and dedication to his portfolio.

The late Ocholi has had a long record of political association with President Buhari.

President Buhari also consoled with the government and people of Kogi State, whom he described as having lost a distinguished and irreplaceable son. He prayed that God would comfort them and grant them the grace to bear the loss.

“The entire country mourns the loss of this great man, who has sadly left us when we need him most,” he said.

President Buhari has also sent the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Engineer David Babachir to formally convey the news to members of the deceased family as well as parishioners in his place of worship.

Here’s Dele Momodu’s Reaction To Davido Calling Him out in Osinachi Remix

davido-and-dele-cease-fire-700x394 (1)

You all recall the Davido versus his baby mama drama that occurred earlier this year…? and Then Davido called out Dele Momodu in the remix of Humblesmith’s Osinachi (Listen or Download Here)

Well……City People magazine recently caught up with Dele Momodu and here are excerpts from their chat.

Of recent, there was news about Davido Baby-Mama and it became big news because Chief Dele Momodu happens to be the Uncle to Sophie, how did you react to Osinachi Remix by Davido?

You won’t believe that I just saw the video for the first time less than 2weeks ago. I saw the thriller for few seconds before that but I never bothered to go out of my way to watch it as I actually thought he was abusing me and I expected him to abuse me but when someone is like your son, you just have to let it past.

Whether we like it or not, we are like family. His Dad and I have known each other like forever. The devil is a liar, when good things are happening, the devil will want to come in between it and all. I saw it on-line first as people were tweeting about it and I initially said, well, he is abusing me, no problem.

You know several times in the past, he will attack me and apologize. I understand how he feels, he feels I am supporting my cousin against him and that is not it. All I wanted was just peace and I am happy we got it.

What is the situation of things now?

Well everybody is fine, all we wanted was just for them to acknowledge the mother of the baby and I have to say that Davido’s father was a perfect gentle man. What usually happened was that some people will go to them and tell them something and still come to us to feed us too. People just wanted trouble at all cost but God prevailed.

Does your Cousin see her daughter now?

Yes of course and that is why I said Davido’s Dad is a perfect gentle man and he did everything to bring about peace.

Do you see them coming together in future?

Well they are adults and I can’t talk about that.

“Olajumoka Orisaguna, Ayodele Dada and the hypocrisy of corporate Nigeria”

Lajum1

About four weeks ago, a lady came into national consciousness. She photobombed her way to riches and fame. Her name is Olajumoke Orisaguna.

The bread seller mother of two was going about her normal routine at the Sabo area of Lagos state when she bombed into a photo session of celebrity photographer, TY Bello. TY Bello spotted the potential in Olajumoke; the model in her. Her life was instantly transformed. Her Cinderella story became an instant hit.

Her Cinderella story resonated with Nigerians whose belief in miracles know no bounds. Make no mistake about it: Nigerians know what suffering is. We are also hardworking, resilient people but the conditions are just not right. Hence, most of us resign to fate, in frustration waiting for any ‘accident’, any miracle or luck to come our way.

This is also true in the case of Olajumoke who left her hometown of Ire in Osun state to ‘hustle’ in Lagos. It was in the course of this that fortune came her way. She became the toast of Nigerians; they identified with her. Some opine that her ‘ancestors in heaven were not sleeping’.

The respected Olusegun Adeniyi shared his experience in his column, about a fortnight ago of how the lady leading the prayer session in a church he attended asked her brethren to pray to the God of Olajumoke. In fact, Olajumoke became a prayer point. Some even go to the extent of telling to allow them meet her luck in their early morning prayer to God.

Not to be left out, corporate Nigeria latched on to this rave of the moment. She became the face of companies who splashed money on her. She got an endorsement from one of them. They duly exploited this ‘accident’. Their interest in her was a mixed of the logical to the ridiculous what those who are propping her up as a motivational speaker.

Three weeks after Olajumoke’s emergence came the most incredible yet impressive story so far this year. This came from one of Olajumoke’s neighbours.

His name is Ayodele Dada who hails from Ekiti state- the Fountain of Education. Ekiti borders Osun (Olajumoke is from Ire in Osun State) to the East. His incredible story happened in Akoka which is very close to Sabo, the scene of Olajumoke’s Cinderella story.

Ayodele graduated as the Overall Best student of the University of Lagos whose convocation held last week. He is the best ever First Class graduate of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) having graduated from the Department of Psychology with a record 5.00 Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA).

What makes this feat remarkable? Ayodele got all anyone could get from his course. This feat will become clearer when one realizes that Unilag was established some 54 years ago! Nobody, absolutely nobody has achieved this till Ayodele through sheer hardwork, dedication and discipline, decided to alter the course of history.

The truth is that no tertiary institution in Nigeria has produced such graduate. This is a national first. Ayo never scored below 70 marks, except in a last semester course where membership of many committees affected his preparation for the exams. To put it in a proper perspective, Ayodele would have taken courses of about 70 credits, both core and elective. He was not bothered whether a course was a departmental course or ‘borrowed’- he dusted and cleared all. What a feat.

This writer, like Ayodele, paid his ways through school and understands what Ayodele went through. He relied on financial aids from relatives as well as teaching to ensure he did not have to drop out of school. Worthy of note is that his feat happened in Lagos with its attendant distractions but Ayodele is not one to fall for distractions.

He knew what he wanted and went for it. The fact that he had to get to Unilag’s degree programme through Direct Entry route having undertaken the one-year diploma programme shows a dedicated young man.

Hear him: ‘I came in through Diploma in Unilag. I actually sat for the UTME in 2011 but the feedback I got was that my result was withheld because that JAMB felt I cheated……………………. I lodged my complaint but it was taking time to resolve it, and it was not as if I had so much money to play with, so, with people’s support, I had to go for the one-year diploma programme. I was the best in my faculty………………………………………………….’

Ayodele’s extra ordinary feat never happened by accident. It was never a case of ‘may fortune come my way’. He studied vigorously, he avoided distraction, and did all the right things one needs to do to graduate with such result. It has never happened before and will take a while before his feat will be replicated. I doff my hat for Ayodele Dada. This writer was also the Best Graduating Student of his department but was never close to what Ayodele achieved.

What has been the response of corporate Nigeria? Loud silence! None has been as conspicuous as it was with the Olajumoke case. I gathered that Unilag Alumni Association made a cash donation while the embattled MTN invited Ayodele to their office, gave him an iphone, a special GSM number and free airtime for the rest of 2016.

Images of this were seen on the telecommunication giant’s Twitter handle. Where are other corporate entities? Are they unaware of this feat? Why has Ayodele’s face not been seen on the cover of magazines? Why is he not the face of our corporate entities who always mouth excellence in all they do? Will this indifference confirm our appreciation for academic excellence again?

The same corporate entities do not usually offer employment opportunities to graduates with 2.2 CGPA but here is one with not just 2.1 or First Class but maximum CGPA. Corporate Nigeria fall over each other to commit millions of Naira to sponsor beauty pageants and musical shows. They sign huge endorsement deals with artists.

This silence in the face of Ayodele’s academic feat is annoying. He must be celebrated, he must have endorsement deals. He must be used to send a signal to kids on the streets that though ‘accidents’ can happen and one may have riches by chance, there can never be substitute for dedication and discipline in academic pursuit. Those in our higher institutions want to see Ayo celebrated to give them impetus to strive to be the best.

It is outrageous, but a National Award for Ayodele is a possibility. He has put the name of the country on the map and if we truly appreciate what he has done, we should reward/honour him appropriately. We cannot be chanting ‘education is the root of national development’ while we ignore Ayodele but dole out huge amount of money, cars and land gifts to footballers and beauty pageant winners. It is nothing but hypocrisy, absence of clear priority and wickedness.

It is against this backdrop that one calls on the government of his state of origin, Ekiti state which prides itself as the Fountain of knowledge to truly honour its own. The government of Lagos state, the Center of Excellence should live up to its name and honour Ayodele. Otherwise, we would have missed a golden opportunity to clear a clear message that we value education.

Queen Slay: Tiwa Savage Is Back as she’s HOT For ThisDay Style Magazine

Tiwa-Savage

Tiwa Savage is the cover star of this Sunday’s edition of This Day Style. The hot mama of one is killing it in the shoot by TY Bello.

Ty Bello says:

TIWA SAVAGE : FAITH I couldn’t wait to see the clothes @tiwasavage would be photographed in .Especially that #RED dramatic dress that just wouldn’t leave my head ..I had never seen the dress before but it made such a strong impression in my heart ..I KNEW it had to EXIST. ..I had built some black panels to create an enclave for Tiwa to stand in.I wore my clothes inside -out ready to quickly paint the panels into what ever Colors worked with the clothes when they arrived . … And arrived they did.. A beautifully curated set of outfits that interpreted everything we had discussed.. But ALL IN BLACK!.. I had been silent about color when we pre planned to keep things fluid… But I understood that black was very versatile but sometimes difficult color to build a story on and I had to make a creative decision on my approach . I scanned the room for all that we had : amazing BLACK clothes and RED props from Mushin market … My biggest prop being an old RED Toyota starlet with BLACK and white faux -fur seats that I had chased down in Mushin market traffic the day before ..Convincing it’s driver ( who at first thought I was crazy )to bring it over to me the day before . I chose to shoot every thing AS THEY WERE. It became clear to me that I was going to have to ‘FAITH-IT’with this shoot . Black paired with red was stark and looked nothing like the pallet of different colors and tones that danced on the photos in my mind. So I had to make the images .. With what we had ..KNOWING and TRUSTING that the color pallets I SAW already EXISTED in the RAW black and red pixels and only had to be CALLED OUT in postproduction . This is how life is .. Not very predictable and sometimes we have to DECIDE to SEE the beauty when it’s not so obvious . So what ever color life is serving remember @tiwasavage and that Faith always makes new options … CALL out the red .. CALL out the green .. And all the colors in between ..! #tybellophotography #photostories
