”It’ll turn Nigeria to a nation of junkies”- NDLEA boss Buba Marwa warns against legalizing Cannabis
The Chief Executive of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Brig. General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd) has warned against the legalisation of cannabis in Nigeria will rob the country of the gains so far made in the renewed war against drug abuse and trafficking in the country.
Recall that the spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Okezie Kalu, earlier this month announced the lower chamber of the National Assembly is set to legalize the use of Indian Hemp in Nigeria for economic benefit. Read here.
In reaction to this, the NDLEA boss objected the move when he spoke in Abuja today Wednesday, May 26, at a national security summit organized by the House of Representatives. He said the present figure of 10.6million Nigerians abusing cannabis is frightening and enough to sound the alarm bell.
He said ;
“Presently, there is no bigger national issue than the issue of insecurity in Nigeria. It is one of the big challenges, if not the biggest, threatening our dear country. Insecurity is today, a full-blown malady with many manifestations such as insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, murder, robbery, reprisal killing, name it.
Yet there has never been a government that is more committed to ending this spate of insecurity than the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari. The President has matched political willpower with resources, but the scope and frequency of these acts of destabilisation and the audacity displayed by the perpetrators call for a second, critical look at the malaise. The persistence of the problem has forced on us the necessity to start to look at likely extraneous factors that might be sustaining the resistance from the criminal elements and in doing so, try to connect the dots. The permutations will lead to a list of probable causes, which will not exclude the use and abuse of illicit substances. In the final analysis, drug abuse is indeed one of the factors fueling insecurity.
“The relationship between substance abuse and crime is a fact. What is clear is that no sane human being will rise against society to commit the kind of gross atrocities as we are witnessing in recent years, except such an individual has first hardened his heart with mind-altering substances. The use of drugs for perverted purposes is not a new phenomenon, neither is it something that just started in Nigeria. There are precedents in world history.
So beyond speculations and armchair theories, there is ample evidence, from report statistics and from empirical data from the field, to conclude that the use of illicit substances is a contributing factor to the worsening security situation in Nigeria. And if this is so, Nigeria should be the last country to consider a law to legalise marijuana in any shape or form.
“Should we have such a law, we will soon become a nation of junkies and criminals. As such, I will like to caution that our lawmakers should not legalise cannabis because it will amount to taking a step forward and ten steps backward. It will no doubt rob the nation of recent gains in the war against illicit drugs. In less than four months, we have been able to mop up over two million kilograms of illicit drugs, with over N90billion worth of illicit substances seized. Imagine if a fraction of this had found its way into our streets. We can’t be holding a national security summit and at the same time considering legalising illicit substances.”
He commended the organizers of the summit, saying it could not have come at a better time. He urged Nigerians to stand up and take ownership of the fight against insecurity in the country.

A video making the rounds on social media captured the moment human rights activist, Ahmed Isah, popularly known as “Ordinary President”, slapped a man in public.
This is coming just few weeks after the “Brekete Family” host was caught on video slapping an abusive woman he was interviewing. The woman, named Susan John, had poured kerosene on her niece’s head and set it on fire over allegations the child is a witch.

This wonderful 20th Birthday of mine fell on an Environmental Sanitation day and as usual, we had to wake up at 5a.m to start cleaning out the entire Surroundings.
Since our Family House was located at the corner piece of Faneye Junction in Ebute Metta, it meant cleaning out the entire Stretch of “Gutter” that spiraled from the back of the house through to the next building.
And that job fell on the shoulders of the only Male in the house: ME!
In the process of cleaning out the Gutters, I heard raised voices emanating from the house.
“Witch! Bastard! Go back to your country, you poor foreigner with your children. Wretched Oyinbo!”.
I already knew my female Cousins were at war with my Mother but trusting my MFM Prayer Warrior of a Mum, she was one to never back down!
“Not on my Birthday. Please GOD! Can I even survive this day in peace and tranquility?”. I thought to myself.
Next thing, my cousins waltzed out of the house still screaming expletives at my Mum, one slapped my lil sister on the face cos she was in her way and then they came up to me.
5 girls in total.
They started taunting me especially insulting my Dad’s 1986 Honda Accord parked in the compound.
“Kalo Kalo Car! Poor dirty Indian! Wretched idiot! Oyiboyi (that was the name they used to call my Mum)!”
“You guys stop! Please! Abeg!”
As if on cue, they pulled up to me face to face in a semi circle. Head on, they started screaming outside the house,
“Stop what?”
Next thing, the five of them started flogging me. And I mean, with proper masquerade whips…. the ones with branches jutting out!
I was Angry. Frustrated. Pained.
And I felt like a Coward at that point because I couldn’t fight back. I just stood there willingly as two of them began to push me around.
When they had their fill, they all moved to the house saying they would extend the same treatment to my Mother and Sisters as we weren’t welcome in the Family House.
That moment I made up my mind;
NOBODY was ever gonna kill my HAPPINESS again!

Girl, 13, has her appendix and part of her bowel removed after TikTok trend that nearly led to her death
A 13-year-old girl who copied a dangerous TikTok trend landed in the hospital for emergency surgery after she started vomiting “black stuff” and complained of bad stomach pains.
The minor took part in a challenge which shows users how to create the appearance of a tongue piercing by placing magnetic ball bearings underneath and on top of the tongue. However, she only succeeded in swallowing the beads, with 15 magnetic beads mashed amongst her internal organs.
The young girl ended up having her appendix and part of her bowel removed following the dangerous challenge.
The girl’s mother, Faye, from Rainhill in Merseyside, England, said,
“The pains got worse so I took her to Whiston Hospital. They thought it might have been her appendix at first.
“Then they ruled that out and thought it might have been gastroenteritis until she started vomiting black stuff. They did a scan and found 10 of the ball bearings. Magnetic balls were lodged in her bowel and appendix”. Faye added.
The girl was rushed in for emergency surgery at Alder Hey Children’s hospital.
Her mother said, “They had to take part of her bowel away and re-stitch it. There was one stuck in her appendix so they had to remove that.”
By the end of the surgery, medics had removed15 magnetic beads out of the girl’s organs.
She’s been left with a scar over six inches long and is still in hospital trying to recover. She won’t be able to go home for another week or two.
Speaking on her daughter’s condition, Faye added,
“I don’t know when she swallowed them because she didn’t admit at first to doing it. I think she was a bit scared of admitting what she’d done.
“Apparently she watched a TikTok video where there’s a trend that all the kids are doing at the minute.
“I haven’t actually seen it but she told me about it and a lot of other children her age have seen it.
“They put one of the beads on top of their tongue and one underneath and it makes it look like their tongue is pierced.
“And then she saw one where they put a big bead in the side of your cheek and put little beads on top of your cheek and you move it with your tongue so they move on your face. They’re magnets but because they’re so small they’re easy to swallow”.

Man stripped and paraded after he disguised as a woman and snuck into female hostel in Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (video)
A young man was stripped and paraded after he disguised as a woman and gained entry into a female hostel in Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Port Harcourt.
Meanwhile, there are conflicting reports about his reason for entering the female hostel. While some claim he went to see a female friend who had been avoiding him after seizing his phone due to his inability to fulfill promises he made to her, others alleged that the young man is not a student of the school and was only there to steal.
The incident reportedly happened on Monday evening, after his suspicious movement within the hostel alerted female occupants, which prompted them to accost him and discovered he is a man.
They raised alarm, drawing the attention of male students who pounced on him. Security personnel on campus intervened to stop the students from stripping the man completely and lynching him.
Video from the scene which has now gone viral shows the man wearing a red bra and boxers as he was taken away in a security van.

A young man who disguised as a woman and entered a female hostel in Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, was caught, stripped naked and paraded.
According to reports, he went to see a female friend who had been avoiding him after seizing his phone due to his inability to fulfill promises he made to her.
However, another conflicting report alleged that the man, who is not a student of the institution, went into the hostel to steal.
The man’s suspicious movement alerted female occupants of the hostel on Monday evening, May 24, and they accosted him. They soon discovered he is a man and they raised alarm, drawing the attention of male students who pounced on him.
In the video making the rounds on social media, the man who was barely clad in a red bra, was whisked away by the school’s security operatives before the issue escalated beyond control.

Veteran Nollywood actress, Ify Onwuemene has died after battling endometrial cancer for more than two years.
The actress who was well known for her role in popular sitcom ‘Everyday People, died of cancer on Tuesday, May 25th.
Recall that the actress who spoke up about her medical condition in 2019, got support from fans and well-wishers including a sum of one million naira from popular Nigerian singer, Davido.
A friend and colleague of the deceased, Gloria Anozie-Young, who confirmed the news of her death in a Facebook post moments ago, gave details of how the actress battelled with the disease which eventually took her life.
“With a deep sense of loss but total submission to God Almighty, we regret to announce that IFEY ONWUEMENE has gone to be with the Lord.
“IFEY ONWUEMENE was diagnosed with endometrial cancer. Her womb was removed, but she has been battling the ailment for many years now.
“Ify spent more than N10m, being helped with donations by her fellow actors and other Nigerians. A GoFundme account was opened for her, but it did not yield much. She had to go for draining every two weeks at a cost of N280,000, but only 3 litres of liquid can be removed at a time so that her heart is not affected.

The model and Instagram influencer identified as Oceane El Hilmer, posed in the business class cabin, shared the photos online then returned to her seat in economy before takeoff.
Oceane El Hilmer in a bid to make her followers believe she was travelling in a business class cabin shared the photos on Instagram and captioned it, “Next stop – Monaco.”
She posed in the business class cabin before the flight took off and posted on Instagram with the caption, “Next stop – Monaco,” unfortunately another passenger who was on the same flight took a photo of El Hilmer on her seat with other passengers in economy and shared online, exposing her.
Following the discovery, netizens have now taken Twitter and Instagram to drag her, while comparing her to American singer, Bow Wow, who shared a photo of a private jet and told his followers he was traveling to New York, only to be seen on a packed commercial plane with other passengers.

Nollywood actress, Toyin Abraham has finally addressed her lingering beef with her colleague in the Yoruba movie industry, Liz Anjorin.
Recall that the issue started in September 2019 when an Instagram blog reported that Liz was ‘held and searched for drug peddling’ during her hajj trip to Saudi Arabia. The report added that Liz was shaken up by the encounter with the security officials.
In reaction to the story, Liz alleged that her sources revealed that Toyin Abraham ‘leaked’ the story to the Instagram blog. She went on to lambast Toyin Abraham for exposing her on social media. In response to the allegation, Toyin Abraham called Liz out for online bullying and threatened to sue her.
Almost two years after the online squabble, the dispute between the celebrities has remained till date with Liz constantly firing obvious shades at Toyin Abraham.
Meanwhile, the drug pedding story came up again recently during Liz’s interview with social media influencer, Esabod. It was gathered that during the interview, Esabob rained hefty curses on Toyin Abraham, her husband, Kolawole Ajeyemi, and their son, Ire.
The curses didn’t sit well with Toyin Abraham and she has finally reacted to the issue. She held an Instagram live session with Iyabo Ojo on Tuesday, May 25, where she shared her side of the story.
According to her, she’s innocent of all the allegations, adding that she doesn’t have any beef with Liz as they’ve only met twice. She insisted that she had nothing to do with the drug peddling story and pleaded with Liz to leave her and her family alone.

Nollywood actress, Eniola Badmus has savagely replied an Instagram follower who asked if she was depressed.
This is coming after the entertainer took to her official Instagram page to put up a post, calling out “Internet monsters” for pitting actors against each other.
The actress’ post came moments after her colleague, Toyin Abraham addressed her long running feud with fellow actress, Liz Anjorin.
Toyin Abraham said during a video chat with Iyabo Ojo that she never paid any blogger to write anything about actress, Liz Anjorin as the former had claimed. Toyin added that it was a statement a fan made that caused problem between them.
However, a fan took to Eniola’s comment to inquire if she was depressed.
“Are you depressed?”, The troll wrote.
The actress in return gave the troll a befitting reply as she listed out all the reasons why she cannot be depressed.

Ace comedian, Ali Baba has reacted after a woman called him out on social media while complaining to his wife, Mary, that he openly flirts with other women.
The Instagram follower had earlier left a comment on Alibaba’s wife’s Instagram page, alleging that the 55-year-old actor openly flirts with other women.
“The way Alibaba jokes and frolics with women on his page, will he allow you flirt and frolic with men on your page as well? Whatever is good for the goose…. Does Steve Harvey joke and openly flirting with women on his IG page? No way… Trust me… There are areas that should be off limits.” The woman wrote.
