A new update concerning Nigerians who lost their lives in the very recent Saudi Arabi Hajj stampede has emerged as a survivor, identified as Ishaq Akintola a Professor of Islamic Eschatology, human rights activist and Director of Muslim Rights Concern, has spoken on the tragic incident.
The Professor spoke with Bayo Akinloye of Punch, revealing that the Saudi authorities have to pay compensation for the Nigerian lives that were lost due to the stampede.
Read their conversation below:
As an eyewitness of the tragic stampede in Mina, what would you say went wrong?
What happened was this: there is usually a system with which pilgrims enter through the venue on the day of Jumrah. Jumrah is the day of stoning the Devil. Thus, when you go on your route; after stoning the Devil, you return by taking a detour which means you don’t take the same route back. When that system is followed there will be enough room for those coming to perform the same pilgrim’s rite and that allows for enough room for people to move without hindrance or stampede. But on that fateful Thursday (when the stampede occurred), September 24; when we were going to the Jumrah, we found that the place was overcrowded and it was quite unusual.
We performed this rite last year; we did it the year before that and the road was free. For the past 10 years there had been no pandemonium; and no stampede on that road. It (stampede) used to happen almost every year in the past, but for the past 10 years, the Saudi authorities have been able to control the human traffic, by creating different routes for entry and exit of the place. But, on that fateful day, we found out that some of those who had thrown their own stones made a U-turn instead of moving ahead to take a detour. They came through the route meant for entrance and not exit. They came towards us. They were in a very large group and the road was not spacious enough to allow a free flow of those of us coming to throw stones at the Devil and those who had stoned the Devil. The road could not take those coming and those going. And I discovered that most of those who took the wrong way were Egyptians…
How did you know they were Egyptians?
I knew they were Egyptians because I heard them speak the Egyptian dialect of Arabic. And, of course, I studied in Egypt for five years. I know the dialect. Knowing that the road would not contain those of us going to perform the Hajj rite and the Egyptians who had already done theirs, we pleaded with them, we tried to persuade them to take the right route to avoid any ugly incident but they refused; the reason being that their camp was based close to the venue of the stoning. And if they were asked to take the other way round to their camp, it would take them a long time to do so. They forgot that by facing us, they constituted themselves into a threat to life — too many lives and their own lives as well. Even if we had attempted to go back for them to pass through, it would have been impossible because a mass of pilgrims had built up and we were pushing one another. The road became narrower and breathing became difficult. In the commotion, the Saudi police after noticing that the situation was getting out of hand climbed roofs of buildings and started splashing cold water on the crowd so that it could give us some comfort — because at that point, people were already tired and collapsing. They had walked 10km from Monzabizah to Mina and from Mina they were walking another three kilometres to the Jumrah. At some point, we had to stand still. We tried to move to one side but it was impossible to do so as people coming from behind were pushing us forward. Consequently, we were forced to push those in front of us. I think it was just a few minutes that my group passed through the opposing crowds that the stampede began. I knew it was a tragedy waiting to happen.
Were there other factors that led to the tragic chaos?
There are other roads usually dedicated for moving in and out of the site but unfortunately on that day those roads were blocked by the Saudi security agencies for no obvious reasons. Why those roads were blocked I cannot explain; therefore, there was no escape route. It was just that one way and those who were facing us had occupied it. Besides, one major reason why that horrible stampede happened was that those who took the wrong route and disobeyed the authorities were able to do so because the Saudi security authorities became negligent; they were complacent. The security men were not at their posts when the commotion began. Saudi soldiers and policemen used to be at the Jumrah to ensure that once pilgrims have performed the stoning rite, they cannot use the same route in which they came in. If the soldiers and policemen had disallowed those who had finished stoning the Devil from using the entry route as the exit, the stampede would have been avoided.
But the Saudi authorities said Africans, which included Nigerians, who embarked on the stoning rite caused the stampede. How true is that?
T he Saudi authorities lied by saying that the African nations, and black Africans, were responsible for the stampede. And, I should add that by African nations, they mean the blacks; Cameroonians, Nigeriens, Chadians, Nigerians and others that caused it. They don’t refer to Egyptians, Moroccans, Libyans, Tunisians and others as Africans. Rather, they call them Arabs. In their statements, they usually refer to these countries (Egypt, Morocco, Libya, and Tunisia) as Arab nations. And, our camps have always been separated from those of the camps of the Arab nations. The Egyptians were not in the African camp. The African camp was different; our location was different. It is still different today.
To support our hypothesis that this was what caused the stampede, the next day after the Saudi authorities saw the stampede and the monumental loss of lives and properties they had caused, they made sure that they brought so many security agents as much as possible to the appropriate points stopping those who had performed the rite of stoning the Devil from returning to their camps through the route they came in. Therefore, on the second and third day of stoning the Devil, there was adequate security personnel to ensure that people who were going to stone the Devil were not blocked or hindered by those who were returning after having performed their own rite. Thus, they did not allow on the second day, those same Egyptians or people from other countries to create the fatal chaos we experienced on the first day, from using the entrance as exit route. In spite of the deaths recorded people still went ahead to perform their rites the second and third day and the road was free. I would say it was laxity on the part of Saudi security agencies that caused the stampede.
Will the bodies of those who died be repatriated to Nigeria?
As far as the Muslim tradition goes, the dead will be buried in the holy land. Trying to bring back the corpses is double trouble for the dead body. Muslims don’t see anything special about dead bodies. The soul has gone back up to Allah depending on the way a person lived his life. We are not demanding for the dead bodies. Anybody who dies in the holy land, over the years, has always been buried there. In any case, Muslims believe that a dead person should be buried within 48 hours. Hence, we don’t see any wisdom in demanding for the repatriation of the corpses. We don’t see any need for it; and that’s not part of our demand.
A man has disclosed that he did a Grand Theft Auto so that he could be jailed in order for him to get away from his wife. Mr. Hayden Vandiver is being accused of breaking into his old workplace, damaging its properties and also stealing a pickup truck which belongs to his former boss; a man he despises so much.
While behind bars, the 51 year old from Tennessee, USA, spoke to News 2, admitting that the rampage happened last Sunday and he was under the influence of drugs.
But a grinning Vandiver also said he planned to get caught so he would be jailed and forced to leave his wife, reports WNCN.
He said:
“She is having a bad time right now. She knows I did this to get away from her.”
Police reveal that Vandiver was caught on camera stealing the 2012 prized Dodge 2500 and a trailer valued at over £40,000 ($60,000).
Vandiver said he quit his job over a year ago but said he didn’t like his old boss.
He added:
“It made me feel great because I know it will hurt him. He’ll come in the next day and his little baby ain’t sitting there and it is four foot in a creek. “The only thing I didn’t like about it was swimming out of it.
In line with the claims by Nasir El-Rufai stating that former President Goodluck Jonathan spent a whooping N64billion for Independence day celebrations between 2010-2014, the former President has come out to refute his claims calling him a liar.
The ex-president’s rebuttal is contained in a statement, titled “We never spent billions on independence anniversary — Jonathan”, and was issued on behalf of the former president on Sunday by Abubakar Sulaiman, the immediate past minister/deputy chairman, National Planning Commission.
The content of the statement reveals that Jonathan’s administration spent only N332.6 million for the celebration in five years, an average of N66 million per year.
President Buhari‘s administration spent N70 million on the 55th independence anniversary on Thursday in what was described as a low-key celebration.
We were taken aback by the recent comment reportedly credited to His Excellency, Governor Nasir El-rufai where he claimed that the immediate past President, His Excellency, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan’s administration spent N64billion to cover the country independence anniversary spending in five years.
The break down, according to the governor showed that N13billion was spent in 2011, N15billion in 2012 and N14billion in 2013 and N22billion allegedly spent in 2014.
This tissue of lies was contained on his facebook comment on Thursday. Ordinarily, we would have allowed this to go as just ranting of a favour seeker , but for the sake of ordinary Nigerians who were abreast of happenings under the administration and also those who never did, we will like to set the record straight.
It is important to correct the misinformation so that the unsuspecting public would not be misled.
For the record, a breakdown of our anniversary spending between 2012 to 2014 amounted to N332.6million. We challenge the Office of the Government of the Federation (OSGF) to publish these details for the consumption of the public.
For the record, a breakdown of our spending for this event between 2012 and 2104 goes thus; 2012-107.6million; 2013-45million and 2014 had 180million. So, the question here is where did the billions as claimed by el-rufai emanate from? Even though that of 2010 and 2011 are not handy now, but it should be known that they all fall within the same bracket as the one stated, except that the 2010 anniversary was a golden one when the country marked her 50 year of independence. But even then , not such outrageous sum was either budgeted or expended .
Again, it is germane to explain the increase in the 2013 anniversary spending for the purpose of accountability. The National Honours Award Investiture was incorporated into the celebration, thus making it two events in one, hence the N174,800,000.00 budget. We also want to add that the said award investiture could not hold in 2013 and the approved budget rolled over and was utilized to organise the investiture in 2014.
It is high time government functionaries desisted from abusing their immunity by destroying history and trading on lies just to gain cheap popularity or curry one favour or the other from certain quarters.
Perhaps President Olusegun Obasanjo was right in his assessment of el-rufai when he said in his latest memoir, My Watch that his vivid recollection of him (el rufai)is his penchant for lying, for unfair embellishment of stories and his inability to sustain loyalty for long. That exactly is what el-rufai has done with his ungodly fabrication of lies against Jonathan government.
One hopes that President Buhari would be on guard against being misled by the likes of el-rufai who are hell bent on misinforming the Nigerian publics.

Some people believe lightening their skins make them more beautiful and hence go into bleaching, whitening or toning.
TUNDE OGUNTOLA in this piece, writes on the health hazards of skin lightening as it is not just all about skin bleaching but also what comes after.
Bleaching is the process of whitening or lightening any material by the use of chemicals. While, skin bleaching basically involves using chemicals to lighten skin tone or provide an even skin complexion by lessening the concentration of melanin in the human skin.
Melanin is responsible for giving black colouring in the human skin. When skin bleaching cream is applied of the body, the effectiveness of the pigment is hindered.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 77 per cent of Nigerian women use skin-lightening products, the world’s highest percentage. That compares with 59 per cent in Togo, and 27 per cent in Senegal. The reasons for this are varied but most people say they use skin-lighteners because they want “white skin” and look more beautiful.
Research shows that it is not only women though who are obsessed with bleaching their skins. Some men too are involved in the practice.
There are various reasons why people bleach their skins to become whiter than they were before which include among others: low self-esteem, self-hate, peer group and quest for beauty, because in many parts of Africa, lighter-skinned women are considered more beautiful and are believed to be more successful and likely to find marriage.
The numbers of people that dive into bleaching are on the increase, the truth is, skin bleaching comes with hazardous health consequences, which include blood cancers such as leukemia and cancers of the liver and kidneys as well as severe skin conditions.
It is true that some persons look good when they apply bleaching cream on their skins, but what about the consequences or adverse effects of making use of bleaching cream. There are many dangers associated with bleaching, be it face whitening or the entire skin bleaching.
The adverse effects of skin bleaching are: vulnerability to body infections, stretch marks exposure, skin weakening, vulnerability to injuries, exposes the veins, intense irritation, redness, pigmentation, vulnerability to body infections.
The growth in skin bleaching is more in some parts of the world like Asia, Africa and in the Middle East. The high demand of skin lightening cream in those parts of the world is because their population is mainly dark skinned. As a result of this, many want to look like the English and hence lightening up their skin colour.
Most hard-core bleachers use illegal ointments containing toxins like mercury, a metal that blocks production of melanin, which gives the skin its colour, but can also be toxic.
There are a number of materials or chemicals used in skin bleaching. Few among the many are: mercury, hydroquinone, niacinamide, kojic acid, arbutin, lactic acid, gel, shea butter, topical retinoids, and corticosteroids among others.
Mercury is the very dangerous chemical that medical officials found in the skin lightening creams that sickened the women, the dangers of mercury are several. It can damage the kidneys and wreak havoc on the nervous system.
Symptoms of mercury toxicity include: irritability, headaches, difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness, memory loss, numbness, tingling in the hands, feet or around the lips, insomnia, depression and weight loss.
Hence, if you have experienced any of these symptoms after using an unmarked cream, see your doctor right away.

Dossou Adenike, is an aggrieved woman seeking divorce in a Lagos Island Customary Court. She has alleged that her husband for 12 years, Mr. Segun Dossou, a Benin Republic national, inserts his fingers into the private parts of his young daughters while bathing them.
Adenike said she was shocked to realize that her husband had been carrying on with the ungodly act anytime he volunteered to bath the children, aged 8, 10 and 12 respectively, adding that on more than three occasions, she had woken up to find her husband missing from their bed only to find him sleeping beside their children in their room.
Speaking in court, the complainant said:
“I went with him to Cotonou to seal our union in their registry. I was just signing documents; I didn’t know what was written in the papers. I don’t love him anymore and I don’t want to give my girls to live with him.
I am still in shock. Our first daughter, 12, told me that she is growing and didn’t like what her dad did to her,” Adenike sobbed.“I scolded him and asked if he wanted to ruin our children’s life but he didn’t respond“I am in support of the dissolution because I know he wants our children in his custody to continue his misdeeds.”
DAILY POST reports that the husband, a 39-year-old Immigration Officer, however, debunked his wife’s assertion, saying the problems in their marriage began when his wife got a job and became unmanageable.
Dossou said:
“She is a thief, she steals government’s property. She brought cement and coal tar home. It was her attitude that made us fight and she left me.”
The defendant went further to say “I just want our daughters. I don’t love or need her anymore.”
