Vogue Names Wizkid Best Dressed Pop Star in Nigeria

01-wizkid

Wizkid is undeniably Nigeria’s biggest pop star, and now Vogue magazine has crowned him the best-Dressed Pop Star in Nigeria.

In 2015, the singer broke the internet after Canadian rapper Drake dropped the remix of ‘Ojuelegba’ on his OVO Sound radio.

Next he was featured in Fader magazine where he talked about his future works and collaborations. This February, Fader published a list of 12 innovative singers who have what they described as ‘the coolest’ sounds, and Nigeria’s Star Boy made the fifth position.

Today, Wizkid shows that there’s no stopping him now, as he has just made his debut feature in the prestigious magazine.

03-wizkid

In Vogue, Wizkid talked about style, shopping in Lagos, rocking traditional Nigerian clothes, his plans with BBC to make clothes for his tour, releasing his own clothing line, and more.

See the excerpt of his interview:

On his love for streetwear like Bape:
Yeah, I like me some Bape, you know. But I wear anything to be honest. Adyn, Rick Owens, Givenchy, anything. I shop from everywhere. We’re talking with BBC to make clothes for my tour.

On shopping in Lagos
I have local tailors out there who make me traditional stuff. So I get material from Lagos, and I have them make me pieces. I mix them up with whatever I wear. I have a whole lot of tailors. The fabrics are from different parts of Nigeria. We have the tie and dye from the western part of Nigeria. We get stuff from the north. I mix it up.

On how much he wears traditional clothes
When I’m back home, all I wear is African fabric. All I really rock is the traditional stuff. That’s the in thing right now. That’s really coming back. Back in the day, our parents used to wear it every day, and they still do, but now it’s cool for wee young ones to wear it. It’s amazing. We’re doing it differently. We’re having it a little bit more fitted. We have styles on it, embroideries and stuff, by local people, made by hand, designed on it.

On what he thinks of Lagos fashion style:

Lagos style is fresh and different. Even with the tailors, they get very innovative with their stuff, with the cuts. When my parents used to make the traditional wares, it was a little bit baggy. But now the tailors are able to infuse the European style, making it slim-fit. Lagos style is different, man. Innovative.

On using tailors in Nigeria:
One hundred percent. The clothes I make back home are proper—properly fitted. Proper, proper. Tailors are A1 back home. I design everything myself, and I get them to make it. I do a little sketch; sometimes I just sit down with a tailor and describe what I want. Sometimes we go back and forth, like, for days, trying to get it right. Sometimes it’ll take a day to make it, sometimes three, four days. I have a lot of tailors. If I want something made in 12 hours, it will be made in 12 hours.

On why he loves colourful shoes:

Well, I’m actually doing white right now. But I like colorful shoes because most of the time I wear black, so I want it to be where my shoes are popping. I’m wearing Harrods shoes right now.

On the possibility of releasing his own clothing line:
I’m hoping to release a clothing line after my EP, planned for April. It’s going to be tracksuits, T-shirts, hats, and African attire as well. I’ll have a special line for traditional [clothes] with my tailors. Taking Africa to the world. It’s a lot of responsibility. Even for my T-shirts, I’m having the real African prints used as the design on them. I’m getting them locally made in the villages in Nigeria. The proper, proper materials.

On who his style icon is:
I love Pharrell’s style. It inspires me. It’s not about the brands, you know, it’s how you put them together. Everything he rocks, he makes it look so good.

On what’s like living in Lagos:
I live in Lekki now. There are new clubs popping up every day. We go to places like Escape, Sip, and it’s madness. December is the craziest time to be in Lagos. I just left there, so I’m pretty exhausted from going hard. Africa is the next thing right now. Talking fashion, music, anything—Africa is on top of all that.

Psquare-Peter-and-Paul-Okoye-e1440946124421

So, this morning, we brought you reports on how Policemen and some officers From the Ikeja High Court stormed the SquareVille Residence in Omole Lagos.

But other half of PSquare, Paul Okoye took to his instagram to deny the fact that there were no issues or controversies in his house, but only a situation in the neighborhood and he was called to intervene.

Well, here are photo evidence and this is the main gist..

It allegedly started few months ago. The singing duo were billed to perform at a show but they didn’t after the management changed the date of the show.

The singers were already paid an upfront of N8million. Because the date of the show was changed, Psquare refused to extend their stand also allegedly refused to refund the money paid to them.

The organisers of the event dragged them to court but the singing duo refused to honour the invitation from the court. At the end the man finally won the case and the result is the brouhaha we witnessed today.

“Play Defensive Midfield For Super Eagles or Drop To The Bench” – Sunday Oliseh to Mikel Obi

index (31)

Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh has warned John Mikel Obi that he risks losing his Super Eagles playing spot if he refuses playing as a defensive midfielder for Nigeria.

Mikel Obi has had a resurgence this season while playing as a defensive midfielder at Chelsea but opts to play offensive midfield when donning colours of the Super Eagles, a trend Oliseh wants to end.

Defensive midfield was also the same role Mikel played when he broke out internationally under coach Samson Siasia at the 2005 FIFA U20 World Cup in the Netherlands.

“With the national team, it’s not what you want that matters, it is what will bring us results,”said Oliseh in a radio interview. “If you don’t want to do that, I will play players who want to help us, like I did against Swaziland. My personal opinion is that he should be given a more central defensive role, like (Guus) Hiddink is using him. He should be the umbrella for the two central defenders,” Oliseh said.

6 Lions on the Loose in Nairobi, Kenya After Escaping From National Park

index (30)
The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) is looking for about six lions on the loose from the Nairobi National Park. The lions are believed to have escaped to Lang’ata, which is adjacent to the park today.

KWS Corporate Communications Officer Paul Udoto said they were not certain of the number of the lions.

“The lions were part of the wild population and we are depending on the public to report if they sight them,” he said.

The wildlife service has advised any person who spots the lions to call KWS. Mr Udoto said the KWS was aware that a lioness had cubbed on the border of Lang’ata Barracks and the park and was monitoring the situation.

“However, this morning we were called at 4am and told that some two lionesses, we believe, including the new mother, had been seen on the road near Lang’ata Hospital. We responded immediately. But we have not been able to track them down,” he explained.

He said another call was made by a member of the public at around 5am claiming to have come across the lions at the bypass near the National Housing Corporation in Lang’ata.

“We are still combing through this area,”

Meanwhile, in an update, the said that one of the lions (pictured) has been caught in Kibera.

Revealed: Davido Paid Meek Mill $200,000 For ‘Fans Mi’ Feature

This was revealed in his very much talked about interview with US Based Magazine, FADER, February/March 2016 Issue, For which he was the Magazine Cover.

Recall Davido featured American rapper, Meek Mill in his hit single, “Fans Mi” (Download Here) and right now, it has been revealed that Davido paid a whooping sum of $200,000 (N6million) to Feature the Philly Rapper.

Below is How Fader ‘revealed’ it, while writing a bio about the singer.

Davido-ft-meek-03

Last year, he finally graduated, after taking time off to attend to his career. After that first single, Davido remembers, “everything just happened. I was being booked in, like, Botswana, all over Africa in under six months.” He self-released a debut album via his own HKN label in 2012, and has since worked with a global crew of producers and songwriters on a steady stream of singles.

Some, like 2013’s muted “Gobe” and 2014’s traditional “Aye,” typify one style he favors: mellow love songs with lightly Auto-Tuned vocals and beats constructed out of kora riffs, buzzing electric guitar, bright keyboard sounds, and stuttering programmed drums.

Others are more indebted to house and hip-hop—like 2013’s clattering “Skelewu,” which was remixed by Major Lazer, and 2015’s Meek Mill-featuring “Fans Mi,” for which he says the Philly rapper was paid $200,000—and traveled the internet to African diasporic communities in cities like New York and London.

6 Hilarious Phone Quirks you will Find Among Nigerians

unnamed-1-3

Mobile phone penetration in Nigeria is at an all time high! Whenever a trendy gadget is introduced into the market, within a few days, you will find it in the country. A clear example can be found with the current scramble for the latest Apple iPhones. With the growing use of mobile devices, there are a few habits that are unique to Nigerians alone. Jovago.com, Africa’s No 1 hotel booking portal shed more light on some of these quirks.

One person, three different phones

unnamed-1-6

Call it show off or whatever you like, Nigerians use more than one phone. This is no a fault of theirs. To a very large extent, the reason for this is because of the inadequacies of the telecom providers. So, to prevent yourself from being stuck especially when the mobile services are erratic, you can easily switch to your second or third line. However, there are a few people who use more than one phone to create a spectacle.

Disclosing your life history over the phone
In public spaces, many Nigerians discuss private and sensitive matters over the phone. They discuss family brawls, business transactions and their destination over the phone among complete strangers. This has led them to been trailed and attacked by unscrupulous persons. It is advisable to tell the person to call back or simply send them a text. Even with that, there are some who cannot just get their eyes off your phone screen.

Overly respectful
Respecting seniors is a culture embedded in Nigerians. However, what will you say about someone that is so courteous over the phone that they could genuflect or kneel down? As far as the person is not physically present, it is not necessary to curtsy. Some people can use ‘’sir or ma’ more than 5 or 6 times in their phone conversations.

ISIS beheads 15 year old boy in Iraq for listening to Western Music

According to a local sources, young boy named Ayham Hussein has been beheaded by the dreaded Islamic terrorist group, ISIS in central Mosul for listening to “western music”.
He was arrested by militants after allegedly being caught enjoying pop tunes on a portable CD player in the group’s Iraqi capital Mosul.

He was dragged before a Islamist kangaroo court which sentenced him to death by public execution.

This is the first time someone will be beheaded for listening to Western Music in Iraq as there’s no Sharia law prohibiting such and the incident has sparked outrage among locals.

“Ayham Hussein was captured by the jihadis while listening to Pop music at the grocery store of his father in the Nabi Younis marketplace in western Mosul. He was referred to the Sharia Court, which issued a decision to execute him,” a spokesman for the Nineveh media center told ARA News. “ISIS jihadis publicly beheaded the boy,” the source said to ARA news, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Violent Fight Reportedly Going On at PSquare’s Home in Lagos as angry client storms & seals their home

Psquare-Peter-and-Paul-Okoye-e1440946124421

If reports going rounds are true then the singing Group, PSquare are in yet another messy drama again.

Apparently, reports say that there was a messy drama at the Omole Phase 1, Lagos, house of PSquare this morning. We gathered that the singing duo failed to show up at an event where they were billed to perform despite the fact that they were paid before the day of their performance by the client.

A source who spoke to us said their house was allegedly stormed this morning and placed under lock and key.

More Inside sources revealed that the action was taken by the aggrieved client. Psquare’s failure to honor the agreement is said to be related to the current misunderstanding between them.

Before this morning’s drama, it’s alleged that they’ve been charged to court 3 times but they didn’t honor it.

Peter was said to have driven off angrily this morning as security operatives kept dispersing the crowd that gathered to watch the drama.

This photo of classical songstress, Brandy, surfaced online and I had no choice but to share cause this is absolutely astonishing. She doesn’t look she’s changed a bit! Wow!

Guinness Book: Woman Makes Record After Having 14th Child With 14th Baby Daddy!

Guinness Book: Woman Makes Record After Having 14th Child With 14th Baby Daddy!

A woman who goes by the name, Anita Sullivan, 36, from Michigan, USA, has become the first woman in recorded history to give birth to 14 children with 14 different men. On Wednesday, she made a grand entrance into the Guinness world book of records, after giving birth to her 14th child at the Harper University Hospital.

While reacting to the achievement, she said: “I’m extremely proud to have broken a World Record. My mother always told me that I was lazy and worthless, and that I would never accomplish anything in my life. .

Now, I’ve shown everyone that she was wrong, and that I can even be the best in the world when I put my mind to something. In fact, I’ve just accomplished something that no one had done before! I’m good at having babies, but I’m really awful when it comes to picking the fathers of my children. .

The representatives of Guinness have also opened a second investigation concerning the record for the number of child support pensions received by one person. Sullivan is already receiving child support from 11 different men.

She is implicated in two other custody cases, which should proceed before the family court over the next two months. The investigation should be over by the month of March 2016, and Guinness will then be able to tell if Sullivan holds a 2nd World Record or not..

13-year-old Girl Kidnapped By Lover, Forced To Convert To Islam and Marries Her

mk,m

According to Sun Newspaper, tension is mounting in Bayelsa State over the abduction and forced marriage of 13 year-old Ese Rita Oruru by one Yinusa who resides in Kano.

Yinusa who resides in Opolo, Yenagoa, had abducted Ese on August 12 2015 and eloped with her to Kano and has refused to allow her return home. .

Her parents who had made several visits to Kano to secure her release, have been unsuccesful as Yinusa’s kinsmen insisted that Ese, who they now refer to as ‘Aisha’, belongs to them as they are ready to pay the necessary bride price.

The matter was reported to the Police and the Department of State Security (DSS) and their promise to bring home Ese has remained unfulfilled forcing the parents to take the issue to youth and civil society groups.

In a press conference addressed by Mr. Kizito Andah of the Child Protection Network, he said civil society and youth groups in Bayelsa are ready to stage a protest and press home the demand for the release of Ese from the custody of her abductors.

Andah warned against an ethno-religious crisis which the abduction and forceful conversion into Islam could trigger in Bayelsa state.

In a statement, the group said: “We strongly believe that the said Miss Ese Rita Oruruhas not only has been hypnotized but also recruited as a tool in the hand of an Islamic fanatical group in Kano State.

She is only 13-years-old and cannot give informed consent to marriage and is still held hostage.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Oruru are petty traders who are putting all efforts to meet the needs of their children.

Securing her return would not only make history in our strong desire to continually protect our children, but also reemphasize and stamp our indelible position against the acts of these culprits.

We, therefore, call for all to join our voices to prevail on the Kano State Government, the Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, to urgently release Miss Ese Rita Oruru, and demand for the prosecution of her abductors under the appropriate law and jurisdiction as it is of urgent national security and public interest.”

“The Husband Of The Breadseller Vs. The Husband Of The Model, – The Olajumoke Story”

By Praise Fowowe

CbCIAfOUcAAqPFF

Events of the last few days have left me with mixed emotions. In as much as I am so excited about the change in fortune of Olajumoke, I have also stepped aside to think through the implications of this new found fame.

As a student of life, one thing I have come to become afraid of is instant stardom. This is because from my knowledge of history especially reading through the Bible, the first man to be an instant adult fell by the way in the third chapter of Genesis (as chronicled by the legendary leader Moses).

I am a family life coach and family is everything to me. I sit in counseling sessions daily and I am amazed at the rate at which marriages fail in this part of the world and the factors responsible for these marital failures. I come out on the strength of this to sound the alarm before what we never bargained for happens.

The attention seems to have been so much on Jumoke, the model, and I wonder what the plan is for her husband?
For the records, no story has been told of her marital relationship prior her stardom.

The Yoruba speaking Olajumoke who was intellectually compatible with her husband left the house that fateful day. But, there is a new Jumoke now, one who has become a cynosure and the latest celeb in the nation.

What role would this play in her family life?

May I state here that all the corporate giants that have suddenly rolled out their drums to beat a new dance for Jumoke, the beautiful bride, should also extend the same gestures to her husband so we do not end up with a celeb whose marriage may struggle in days to come.

So here are my suggestions:

– The husband must be made to go through the same level of training Jumoke is exposed to. There is no point giving this man a modern wife when he may remain an ancient man. If Jumoke, the celebrity, is going to be an English speaking one, her husband must also become one.

– Attach the husband to a Family Life Coach or a Psychologist who can work with him to birth a mentality which matches the new status of his wife. I have seen educated men struggle with a wife who is a corporate success and can only imagine what would happen in a case as this.

– Carefully manage the relationship between Jumoke, her husband and their extended family. This is Africa and we all know the implications.

– Keep Jumoke close to TY Bello or Tara Fela-Durotoye; these are two women who have been able to match corporate success with domestic success. A scandal on our beautiful bride is a news we would not want to hear as all sorts of juicy offers will come her way.

It takes a values driven person to resist some of the offers which may come from some quarters that I shall not mention here. Jumoke needs to be this values driven person; she needs to be groomed to be this person.

– Manage and pace this lady so that different platforms who may want to use her story to inspire others do not take advantage of her. If possible, shoot a one-time video which can be played for their audience as against subjecting the girl to a road show that may wear her out.

– Care should be taken to ensure Jumoke’s innocent friends remain her friends because the friends she may make now may not be true friends. Her fellow breadsellers should be upgraded if possible till she develops a new mindset that can match her new status.

olaju-400x397

I am so happy for our newest model. We must tread with caution withal so that this success story can stand the test of time and give birth to more success.”

Bill Cosby Sues Accuser Andrea Constand, Her Mother and Her Attorney!

Bill Cosby Sues Accuser Andrea Constand, Her Mother and Her Attorney!

Its time for payback and Bill Cobsy is ready to fight back with every legal weapon in his arsenal. According to reports, he’s going after rape accuser Andrea Constand, her mother, her lawyers, and the National Enquirer in a breach-of-contract lawsuit.

via Deadline:

“Despite the strong and unambiguous provisions in the Confidential Settlement Agreement, Defendants repeatedly disclosed information that they promised to keep secret,” said Cosby’s redacted complaint that was filed in federal court late last night (read it here). Using the 2015 criminal charges laid against him as wedge, Cosby is going after all the parties for “unjust enrichment, including but not limited to return of consideration paid under the 2006 Confidential Settlement Agreement.”

“As a result of Andrea Constand’s breaches of the 2006 Confidential Settlement Agreement, Cosby has suffered serious and irreparable harm that cannot be cured by money damages and also has suffered substantial monetary damages, in an amount to be proven at trial,” the filing adds.

The February 1 jury-seeking complaint was filed under seal just one day before the comic and actor was in a Pennsylvania court in an unsuccessful attempt to get the trio of felony charges of second-degree aggravated indecent assault against him tossed. But now, as ordered by a federal judge, a portion of Cosby’s latest countermove over the breaking of confidentiality agreements become public Wednesday.

“Andrea and Gianna Constand, both citizens of Canada who are outside the jurisdictional reach of the Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, District Attorney, voluntarily participated in a 2015 re-investigation of Andrea Constand’s allegations against Mr. Cosby,” says Cosby’s 29-page complaint. “Both Andrea and Gianna Constand voluntarily sat for interviews with the District Attorney, even though they were under no legal obligation to do so and the terms of the Confidential Settlement Agreement expressly prohibited such conduct.”

The complaint adds: “Their attorney, Dolores Troiani, voluntarily cooperated with the investigation and turned over her case files from the Underlying Litigations to the District Attorney, directly violating the express terms of the Confidential Settlement Agreement. Defendant American Media, Inc., has published and continues to publish stories regarding allegations against Mr. Cosby made by Andrea Constand and other individuals despite its clear contractual obligations to not publish any stories relating to certain allegations against Mr. Cosby.”

Dolores Troiani and Constand’s other lawyer Bebe Kivitz aren’t taking Cosby’s latest legal move without some pushback of their own.

“Cosby requested the court afford him the right to make accusations while preventing disclosure of the terms of the settlement agreement to allow the public access to the information essential to evaluate the validity of his claims defendants violated their agreement,” says a February 12 filing by Troiani and Kivitz challenging the “self-styled public moralist” actor’s desire to file the complaint under seal (read it here). In the paperwork made public yesterday, they counter that Cosby has shown no “specific cognizable injury” to warrant the seal and keeping the settlement terms secret – especially since he wants the amount of the settlement in question back.

In a tale similar to what more than 50 other women have alleged, Constand said thatThe Cosby Show actor drugged and assaulted her in his suburban Philly mansion in early 2004. The ex-Temple University employee went to the authorities in early 2005, but Montgomery County District Attorney Bruce Castor declined to press criminal charges then, citing, as he said earlier this month, “insufficient, credible and admissible evidence.” Promised a binding non-prosecution agreement by Castor, Cosby did not use his Fifth Amendment rights and did testify in a 2005 civil case brought forward by Constand.

National Enquirer owners American Media were added to the case in late 2005 over an interview with Cosby published that year where Constand claimed the actor had accused her of “extortion.” Neglecting to speculate if Constand was suing him for money, Cosby’s quote to the Enquirer was, “I am not going to give in to people who try to exploit me because of my celebrity status.” The civil case was dismissed in 2006 after being resolved in a settlement that Constand attorneys Troiani and Kivitz helped broker. Everyone was required to sign a confidentiality agreement as part of the settlement.

“Sting Of Poverty” – Eedee Bari Bawoh.

Sting of poverty

I have heard it’s thousand stories of lure,
It’s gory songs of allurement,
It’s many stripes apportioned an earnest fatality,
Still, it’s wave of effectiveness I overlooked.
Till it knocked the doors of my cabin,
With Disgusting sounds I dread.
Unprepared I was, my arms far from reach;
I had whittled down my guarded battalion of old;
So naked I stood, helpless to its smile of victory.
As I held back the shameful tears of unawareness,
It carefully strolled my path without an invite.
Swallowing all I have laboured meticulously for.
O that matchless glory I groaned daily to attain
Caught in it’s web my eyes are lifted high to behold.
At a pick of every dime, it sliced my bowels without mercy.
Stealing all I had, it nipped the patience of my very soul.
Crawling the ends of a wretched existence,
Scavenging like an indispensable beggar to life .
Without worth, lacking the thought of wants.
Left to contend with impecuniosity, penury, left impoverished.
I sought solace in a beginning I long to re-venture.
But it’s wrath tore me into pieces I’m yet to gather.
So stung to my very soul, cages mind and body.
To thee poverty I beckon with a humbled spirit,
Give unto me wealth’s sound of speech,
Pure freedom for a depressed soul to soar,
To climb heights of heaven forth the while
For my grieve is weak and smileth not;
And my pains has lost its Melody.
Let my shine rise to sparkle bright.
Relive me I pray thee, from thy wrath of death.
For carefully I seek thy mercies with tears

Davido covers US Fader Magazine with a very revealing Interview

Fader-Magazine_Davido

Our very own David Adeleke popularly known as Davido is on the cover of the Feb/March 2016 Global Issue of Fader Magazine.

The cover story also details his journey to the US for college to where he is now. It’s titled, “How Davido Became African Pop Music’s Fortunate Son”.

The interviewer spent four days in Lagos and even followed David and his crew to Quilox for his brother’s birthday, where she said it was so similar to other clubs around the world,

The women hanging around the VIP are wearing the same crop-tops and cut-out dresses that I’ve considered buying from Instagram boutiques.

The magazine also pictured the star with his daughter, Imade in her room and also talked about the baby mama drama, but just in the context of him wanting multiple income streams aside from shows, they followed him to his father’s house and more. You can read the entire feature by Rawiya Kameir on the Fader website here.

Here are some highlights.

On Davido’s House

For the past three years, Davido, now 23, has lived in the posh Lagos neighborhood of Lekki, in a three-story house that welcomes a revolving cast of employees, friends, and hangers-on, with imported weed and liquor in constant supply and demand.

On a Friday afternoon in December, he’s sitting on a couch in the home’s top-floor lounge, telling his life story to an audience of a half-dozen people.

At Davido’s house, the walls are dominated by portraits of Davido. Most of the pieces, including a five-foot tall Old Masters-style painting, have been painted by fans, who camp outside for as many as three days, waiting for Davido to accept their offerings.

On His Family House
Davido’s childhood home is just a few minutes’ drive away. Inside, there’s a grand marble staircase, and family photos spanning several generations line the walls of multiple living rooms. (Davido’s godfather, it should be noted, is Aliko Dangote, a construction magnate whose estimated $18 billion net worth has earned him Forbes’ title of Africa’s richest man for the past three years.)

On Atlanta Police Raiding His Home, Paid for in Cash
“I guess a neighbor must have tried to snitch. They saw me and thought, ‘How did that African get here?’” he says. “How do I explain to someone who’s never heard of me that I’m famous? I showed them all of my videos on YouTube. They loved it.”

The Fame
For Davido, the result has been a kind of fame for which there are few parallels. When I land at Murtala Muhammad International Airport in Lagos to report this story and discover I don’t have the necessary yellow fever vaccination document required for entry, I successfully drop his name, much to the delight of a middle-aged official who asks me to pass on a message. “God bless our son, Davido,” he says.

A couple of days later, Davido performs at the wedding reception of family friends in Lekki’s Lagos Oriental Hotel. His five-song set was offered to the newlyweds by a family member as an ostentatious gift, much like the brand-new Bentley on display elsewhere in the hotel’s ballroom. Afterwards, he attempts to snake out of the hotel through a makeshift exit, his oblong face streaked with sweat.

Dozens of young men crowd the wings of the ballroom, undeterred by the armed soldier who is a member of Davido’s everyday security detail. Waiters drop their serving trays for a chance to touch him. Bartenders and ushers abandon their posts. Palms are thrown to faces, temples, and the sky in disbelief. But the wilder the scrum grows, the calmer Davido seems; similar scenes manifest nearly anytime he appears in public, and he’s accustomed to the hysteria. “Sometimes they want money, sometimes they want photos, but sometimes I think they just want me to see them,” he tells me later.

The Future – On Going International with Sony
The Sony deal, which was brokered in part by Nigerian-born, U.S.-based A&REfe Ogbeni, will provide him with new resources to reach American and European fans. Davido envisions snagging an opening spot on a prime U.S. tour, a big push for a crossover single, and other traditional major-label marketing.Baddest will feature non-African artists—Future will appear on at least one song, Davido says—and strike an overall balance between Nigerian pop and American-inspired hip-hop. “I know what kind of songs work. The music should have everything in it—Jamaican, African, American, everything. Something like Wizkid’s ‘Ojuelegba,’ it has a cool feel to it,” he says, nodding to the song remixed by Drake and Skepta in 2015. “But are foreigners going to come to Nigeria to listen to that all the time? No. It has to have a pop influence.”

Davido thinks he will triumph where others have struggled because of his innate cultural literacy of both the U.S. and Africa, the result of being raised between worlds. Long before the internet erased them for the rest of us, money and travel erased borders for him. “I can be in the club with Meek Mill and Future and be on a level with them,” he says. “I understand what they’re talking about. I know what the trap is. These are things that some of these other guys, they don’t have it. They can’t have these conversations with the rappers, so how can they have them with the fans?”
